Hello everyone and welcome to fly a queer Haikyuu podcast. I'm rainbow and I'm m. Today we're going to talk about an episode of Haikyuu , episode 19 from season one conductors blah, blah, blah.

em

00:20

But most importantly, yada yada, fucking yada fucking yada.

rainbow

00:23

We saw the Haikyuu movie last night. We saw the Battle of the Garbage Dump.

em

00:27

It's also the day that was the day before Pride Month, which is so fitting. It's now June 1st. Happy Pride. We'll get into that in a second, but I want to talk about our experience really quick. We got there super early because unfortunately it is not playing in our small town, so we had to go to the next town over, and of course we're excited. We went and got dinner and then still had like a half hour to kill, so we just went in. We were the first people there. The screen was blank. And then, like a couple came in and then a solitary person who I wish could have been our friend, but she was sitting a little too far away. She came dressed in Nekoma stuff.

rainbow

01:07

And then stuff. And then we were all just sitting there very quietly. I tweeted about it and I was like what if I just start?

em

01:08

playing the theme song? Or what if we just start reading fan fiction out loud make some friends.

rainbow

01:10

It wasn't packed like I thought it was gonna be, which is fine yeah, whatever, but, , I do think maybe it was out on thursday, may 30th, and maybe there was a bigger yeah gathering there. Also, like the town we went to has multiple movie theaters, yeah, so maybe it's just a matter of, like, all of the fans were spread out across the multiple theaters.

em

01:26

Yeah, and we're going to do a whole episode about the movie, so we won't get too deep into it. But my only comment is like it was, it was great, I loved it. But you know, I will say, if there is any game that deserved the Shiratorizawa treatment, it was this one. Like I would have obviously I think everyone can agree would have much preferred, like a 10 episode season dedicated to this game, because you know, obviously they had to breeze through things and cut things out and not give a lot of attention to things that we would have loved. But for what we got, I mean I think they did a great job. Everyone looked beautiful, the POVs were interesting and the way they did it was, I think, a success. But it's like you could have given me a three and a half hour Marvel movie length and I would have been.

rainbow

02:06

I would have been sat yeah, I'm very interested in like maybe, if anyone has this information, I'd love to know. Like you know what? Is it a money thing? I feel like movies cost more than shows to make, but maybe that's not. Like the animation quality was super high, so, like I don't really know what the deal was. I don't know what's going on. I do think I mean it was amazing. It was incredible.

02:28

I think there were definitely things missing that I would have loved to see. It's like you could have added another five, ten minutes, or you could have taken this one thing out and put this thing in, but it was a really incredible experience. I'm almost kind of glad that like well, it would have been cool if it was a full theater, but like everyone was on the edge of their seats, gasping. We clapped at the end. Em and I had our plushies. KageHinata were watching with us. I had way too much butter on my popcorn, I spilled my soda, but none of that mattered because at one point, I was gripping em's arm so hard she had to ask me to stop because I was just so excited. It was so, so good. It was a really amazing experience. I wish I could pay for screenings across the nation so that every single person could get that experience, because it does suck that it's not like coming out in every theater and our theater.

em

03:19

It didn't have. I saw some theaters had Haikyuu cups. We didn't have any cutting boards or any posters. There was just no love for it.

rainbow

03:28

Yeah, there was not a single poster. Like we were excited to get to the theater and maybe take a picture with our plushies in front of the poster, just nothing. You know, I guess, maybe where the theater we were at, which actually I think was the same theater where we saw the Barbie movie and it was all decked out for that, but I it's, it's just a marketing thing and, like you know, it could be that like, maybe like some of the movie theaters that had more like merch and that kind of stuff, maybe just had people working in management who were like more like understanding of, like oh, this is gonna help make us money, or maybe like the particular theater, yeah, maybe like in bigger cities.

em

03:59

You know, it was more of a thing. I don't know how that all gets decided, but I don't either. It's fine, it was still. It was, it was very of a thing. I don't know how that all gets decided, but I don't either. It's fine, it was still it was. It was very fun. And now I'm really back on my Haikyuu bullshit. I was having Haikyuu dreams last night. I was having visions of Kurokin. I mean, it's been great.

rainbow

04:13

Yeah, I'm, yeah, I just I'm thinking many, many thoughts about many characters and many ships. And it was funny. On the way home we were like, do you just want to rewatch Haikyuu? And then we were like, oh wait, we're doing that week by week slowly but surely.

em

04:24

We're doing that, but we'll have a whole episode digging really into it. We just wanted to say that you know, happy pride, haikyuu is gay and and speaking of happy pride month, everybody yeah, so this episode is coming out in June as well.

rainbow

04:37

This episode in the next episode. So we're gonna still talk about pride. You know you should be proud of who you are all year round, but this is a month specifically dedicated to celebrating ourselves, remembering our history and, you know, just reminding ourselves of, like, why we have a Pride Month in the first place. I've put some stuff up on my Twitter about like kind of how, like Pride marches and Pride Month started Spoiler alert it was police brutality that set everything off. Cops are not our friends. But yeah and just and I wanted to say for this episode not for any particular reason, but just something I think about a lot during pride month is that the lgbtq plus community is vast and there are a lot of people that fall under that umbrella. And if you're an ally, if you're not gay, I don't know why you're listening to this podcast , but no, no, straight, people come on.

em

05:27

Yeah, yeah, sure you can come.

rainbow

05:28

You're welcome here as well. But no, so I just want to say that, like you know, especially if you're like one of the big, like I would say four, like if you are LGB or T I think sometimes, you know, those are kind of almost used as like umbrella terms or like a lot of focus is put on like those identities. But there are so many people who are part of our community and if you don't recognize those other people, like that's pretty fucked. Like intersex people, asexual, aromantic people, genderqueer, you know, non-binary two-spirit that a lot of indigenous cultures have like two-spirit.

06:02

I also wanted to say that the idea that there are only two genders is a very like Western idea. There are other cultures that exist to this day that have more than one gender. Some of them have three, some of them have four. That is just part of their culture. It's not seen as weird, it's not seen as different. They have a place in those societies and so that exists. So anyone who's out there saying there are only two genders or you can't switch genders, they're misinformed also like we learned about the difference between gender and sexuality, and like junior high yeah, like they're two.

06:33

Like gender and sexuality, are two for two, different or not? Yeah, gender and sex. Gender and sex yeah, so gender and sex are different things like I feel, like people are confused.

em

06:41

They're like well, they're the only male and female, and it's like that those are sexes those are sexes and that's like a.

rainbow

06:45

That is like a biological way to look at things. But gender is so much more than that. Gender is about.

em

06:52

gender is more mental, it's about like it's just about how you express yourself and show yourself to the world, so that's a totally separate thing. So, but you, I think we were talking about this like there's a line in the Haikyuu movie and they're talking about rivals, but I think it applies here Approaching with curiosity and respect instead of fear, even if you don't get it. Just remember we are very early on. I said this last time. I think, too, we are very early on in this conversation, and better to include more and, you know, try different things and stuff that you might not understand, than to just keep that door closed.

rainbow

07:23

So just, everyone, keep an open mind and you know, and I think it's important to point out, that there are systems in place that keep those binaries that like benefit from those binaries that maybe that's not the best, like capitalism, organized religion, like having control over us, like those kinds of systems. They benefit from us infighting for one thing, and I just don't think that's necessary. Like I think we can have conversations about what it means to have these different identities, but there is no point in arguing with another person like I identify as pansexual, and there's nothing I hate more than when somebody says like oh, just call yourself bi. It's like that word doesn't work for me, that label doesn't feel right to me. That's what I say when.

08:06

That's what I mean when, like gender and sexuality, it's very much about emotion, it's very personal, it comes from within you and that's a conversation you have to have with yourself and nobody else is really allowed to tell you how that conversation goes. That's like it's not a choice that you make, but like the choice to discover that and the choice to say how you identify is your choice and your choice alone and nobody else gets to make those decisions for you. If you find, if you find a label polysexual, pansexual, transgender, non-binary genderqueer, whatever it is. If you find that label and you're like that, feels like me, then that's you baby, and nobody else can say otherwise and yeah, yeah, that's another thing.

em

08:45

It's just, it's very personal. If you don't like that, then hey, baby, you don't have to use the label. And I feel like, you know, we just kind of get newer versions of old ignorances, like my best friend's mom used to tell us, like there's bisexuality, no, you pick one or the other and like the is just the new version of that, and it's like, just keep you opening your mind, baby. Just because it's new to you doesn't mean it's wrong. But anyway, on to the triple homo spike of haikyuu yes everybody is gay, there's no argent yeah, yeah, they're all.

09:15

They're all part of the lgbtq plus community up in here, none more so than Oikawa tori, oh my god, anime's greatest villain, or he actually has a rival for that title now, after the Haikyuu movie, that's another thing, oh my goodness, yes, all right, I think it's my turn to do the recap Get into it, baby. I'll count you down Three, two, one.

rainbow

09:36

It's another Oikawa episode. Karasuno prepares to face Seijo with a full team, but taunts from Oikawa have the whole team, but especially Kageyama, shook. On the court. We see the psychic connection between Iwo, oe and action. Meanwhile Kageyama and Oikawa trade insults and setter dumps. The game is just beginning, but you can already tell this is going to be a good one.

em

09:57

Hey, yeah, and the whole time I'm probably gonna put in Oikawa's theme.

rainbow

10:03

I just love it and then the little oh when he goes to serve. I freaking love that. Oh, yes, Oikawa's. I think it's so perfect because it is like it's kind of like bright and happy, but there's almost a sinisterness to it, yes, which is Oikawa in a nutshell, like he looks so evil at the beginning of this episode.

em

10:23

Yes, we start the episode off with karasuno watching oba joe's game before they play against them and he is just delighting and beating this team yeah, that you like.

rainbow

10:32

He's just like I think he has like five service aces in a row and everyone's like, oh my gosh, he's so good. And he's just like he knows. He's like, yeah, we're beating the shit out of you.

em

10:41

And like he's just so excited to play karasuno and Ukai says and this is, you know, the title of the episode is conductors, and this is what we really get into for the rest of the season, really, because you know we're getting down to it. Setters are like the conductors of an orchestra. You know, you could have the same instruments, the same orchestra, but the conductor will completely change the sound.

rainbow

10:59

And Oikawa is an excellent conductor yeah, and then we kind of get a little bit more background from Kageyama about like he's, like it's not just Oikawa, like that number four down there, the ace Iwaizumi. He's been playing with Oikawa since elementary school and they have an almost psychic connection which is gay and yeah, yeah, in the sub he says iwa oi.

em

11:18

Well, he doesn't say I Iwaoi but, Iwaoi is linked both mentally and physically, which could mean nothing For those of you who know about Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. You know what that reference is. If not, please look it up. They are another childhood friends to lovers. I mean, they are childhood friends

rainbow

11:48

The great king like yeah. And then they see a camera and Noya's like look paparazzi. And they're like leaning over and looking at the camera, and then a guy turns around and is like middle schoolers, I mean elementary schoolers, keep it down. And I was like oof. That part always gets me like poor Hinata and Noya just look. So defeated.

em

12:06

They're like oh no, they get humbled quick. Well, they're little and they're shouting, so you know, that's really on them, that's and they do look young, and that's the thing, especially off the court.

rainbow

12:15

It's one of those things where, like on the court, they are so intense and it's like you would not for a second mistake them for elementary school players, but they're just so like, bright and happy and loud and it's like yeah they, they seem like children, they're childlike.

em

12:28

So we go back to school. A sleepy bus ride. Everyone's knocked out, , and when they get back one of the teachers calls out to them, , and says oh, you guys are on tv tell-a-vee yeah, oh, my god, it's so funny because in the dub I think it'sTanaka, Noya and Hinata, of course, are like.

rainbow

12:45

They're like what tv show us, and then you get somebody's voice in the background. I think it's Suga going, please oh, that's so cute.

em

12:53

Yeah, they're watching and I love the local news is so . And then Tsukishima points out it's just the local news and noise like televi is televi , and you know. They're talking about Shiratorizawa, which destroyed their opponents like 25 to 6, 25 to 6, that's devastating.

13:09

I would quit my volleyball career. That's really, I feel, bad for any of the starter teams. Day one we have to go up against Shiratorizawa. That's just not even fair. And then of course, it is the tvs. Cannot get enough of Oikawa, who is a volleyball idol.

rainbow

13:23

Basically, yes, and it's, yeah, it's because they they're about to talk about Karasuno. They're like, oh yeah, Aoba Johsai, who won their game today, is going to be going up against another team that won their game. And they talk about Date Tech a little bit and, like everyone thought Date Tech would win but karasuno won. And then you think they're gonna go to footage of karasuno. And then it's just Oikawa and they're like what do you think about karasuno? AndTanaka's like what? It's that douche which is so funny. And then I really love what Oikawa says in the dub, because he says I really hope they do their best so we can annihilate them with the most sickly sweet smile. I just I hate him yeah, no.

em

13:59

And so karasuno was not impressed. And Daichi's like all right, it's time to get it's what. Does he say, oh fuck, it's just like it's time. And the teacher's like for what? And Taken's like it's just a meeting, we're just going for a meeting. So then they're having their meeting. And Ukai uses this analogy. I don't know how he does it in the dub, but in the sub he's talking about how you know, date. Their game against date tag was like the first sip of beer I love this analogy.

14:23

I totally get it. I used to feel this way about cigarettes that first pull back when I was a delinquent. ButTakeda was like let's use a different analogy for these minors but basically it's like that was their first taste of a proper challenge, a proper game, and they're hungry for more yeah, yeah, I have you kai for kidding that.

rainbow

14:40

He's talking to high schoolers. I think it's interesting because he talks about it because I think in karasuno they're like, oh, how are we ever gonna beat aoba johsai and you guys kind of talks about the difference between watching a game and being in it. He's like if you were watching the game that we played against date tech, you would have been like, oh, that, what, those blocks are so high, like we couldn't have possibly done it, and I just kind of feel like that.

14:59

That's a good example of like opponents don't seem as hard to beat when you're on the court with them yeah you know like when, when you're in the game and the challenge is right there in front of you and it's it's do or die, like I think sometimes that's almost easier yeah whereas if you're watching it you're like, oh my gosh, I don't even know how I would beat them. Yeah, and then a random grown man comes in to hand Ukai a recording of Seijo's game. How did he get that? Did he record it?

em

15:25

I guess he's probably part of the neighborhood league or whatever. But I just thought it was really funny, like because he gives him the DVD and Ukai's like the next round is on me. And the way this man cheered he was like way, yeah, I was like all right, everyone just settle the fuck down. But thenTakeda is like all happy that Ukai is trying to do something, watching the game and whatever, and he's like the next round's on me. And he's like Magica, like they're just way too excited about beer. And you know what. Ukai probably used that reference because he was definitely drinking at 15 years old.

rainbow

15:54

Yeah, for yeah, abso-friggin-lutely. The line in the dub is talk, it is all cute and like the background's all cute and stuff, and he's like next time your drinks are all on me. And then you guy comes up and he's like oh, sweet talker, oh my god that's gay wow, you're shipping them.

16:10

, also, just like that random grown man like, I like to think that, like, and maybe no, maybe this is normal, but I like to think that he went and he taped the game himself, and so he was just a random single older man at a high school volleyball game, just taping this game, and I wonder if there was any of the adults being like what the?

em

16:27

fuck is this guy? Well, I think there's an official taping of the game. I think he just got his hands on it.

rainbow

16:32

Well sure. Yeah, that's probably the case, but let me have my fun imagining You're right.

em

16:42

I'm sorry, so no, it's okay. The meeting's over and the senpai's notice that Kageyama is more irritated than usual. He's stalking off, he's thinking about Oikawa's challenge to him and this is honestly the most nervous we ever really see. Kageyama is going up against his former senpai and then, of course, Hinata trots along and taiji's like oh there, he goes  and he gives Kageyama what I call a reassurance sandwich. So he starts off with hey, you're going to get forehead wrinkles if you frown so hard. And then he follows up with reassuring him that they're going to defeat the great king and Kageyama's like defeat Oikawa, could it be?

rainbow

17:16

Oikawa is such a big figure in Kageyama's mind you can really tell I have the that, like Oikawa, lives rent free in Kageyama's head. Hinata knows that he's in a funk and he tries to tease him out of it.

em

17:28

Yes, yeah, because then he, then he sandwiches it with like and we're going to be on tv, so you should really think about looking good. Kageyama's of course not impressed and he's, and he tells Hinata. He's like well, of course we have to win.

rainbow

17:38

That's our next step towards our goal yeah and like, and that's the thing is. Like Oikawa. Like, because Oikawa looms so large in Kageyama's mind. I think Kageyama is just too focused on beating Oikawa. Yes, like it's. We've never seen him like this. Like you said, and you know we'll.

em

17:55

We'll see how that goes, yeah, exactly now back to Seijo. In their little club room it's just Iwa Oi and Iwa eyes the DVD in Oikawa's bag. It's the Karasuno versus Date Tech and they're such little bitches to each other. Well, actually Iwa is like hey, don't stay up all night, you know. And Oikawa is such a little cut. He's like are you my mom?

rainbow

18:14

And then I love the look that Iwa gives him like I'll fucking kill you if you talk to me like that again and then immediately I was like I'm sorry, I won't stay up late, like which kind of is a mom move? Like that is kind of is Oikawa's mom? Because, like you, you talk back to your mom and then she just gives you a look and you're like I'm so sorry, I didn't mean it.

em

18:35

Iwachan is mommy who would have thunk , and then he's just like calling him trashy, trashy, kawa, and all that stuff okay, this is.

rainbow

18:44

This isn't a lot of compilations, because it's really funny, because which I? I agree it's very funny, but, , because Iwaizumi is like, he's like, oh, shut up, loser kawa. And orikawa was like you know, I'm getting tired of these nicknames and he's like shitty kawa then, and I was like, well, now you're just being vulgar.

em

19:01

It's so funny, they can't stop flirting. Yeah, and we have, you know, Ukai's watching their match. Kageyama is laying in bed thinking and playing with a volleyball, and then we have Oikawa very intensely watching their match.

rainbow

19:14

And I kind of thought it was interesting. We kind of have a mirror of Ukai sitting on his futon watching the mat, watching Seijoh's match, and then we have Oikawa sitting in his chair, looking so crazy and intense.

em

19:28

Well, he what he wants to be Kageyama so badly?

rainbow

19:31

it's so, but like I was saying that they kind of are like mirroring each other, because Oikawa is kind of like the real coach of that team at this point. Yeah, very true, like he, like those like the Seijo coaches exist to talk about Karasuno, literally yeah, and so Oikawa just is looking so intense. I've always loved that.

19:49

That like has stuck with me since the first time I watched it and just I'm imagining, like I'm sure that's what he does with, like Shiratorizawa games, any opponent where he's like I have to beat them and I you know, I almost wonder if he does that with every game, because he's like I have to analyze, I have to figure it out, and I think, like for Oikawa he's like, well, I know I'm smart and I know I can figure people out, and like I'm not as good of a setter as Kageyama, but like I have other skills, and so I feel like he like overworks himself and Iwaizumi sees that and Iwaizumi cares about him and he knows he's gonna stay up late and he's gonna overwork himself and he's like don't do it.

20:20

But Oikawa does it anyway because he has low self-esteem and has to prove himself. Yep, you clocked it. That's kind of the first half of the episode. And then we have the second half and I wanted to talk a minute for a minute about the commercial break thing that they do, which we don't talk about a lot because it's just a very repetitive, but it does show the one where Oikawa goes to serve and then it hits Iwaizumi in the face and I kind of can't help but wonder if Oikawa like did that on purpose, because like he's got really great control of the ball, and then it shows like him doing like a little wink afterwards and then I'm just like wow, I hope you really enjoyed that, because Iwaizumi is about to murder you they just they, they very much antagonize each other.

em

20:58

So, yeah. So now it's the day of the game. The neighborhood guys come and they are talking about how they use their paid time off to come to these games and I'm just like, okay, girl, we need your exposition, I guess.

rainbow

21:09

So if that's how you want to spend your time, Well, and I said, it's Shimada and Takanoe and you know, I think they're being really dedicated senpai, they sure are.

21:18

And if you think about it, like and I think it's especially important to show the difference because Seijoh has, like their school Oikawa's, got a bunch of fan girls who are all like screaming their name and, like karasuno only has these two at this point, yeah, very true. So you know, thank you for using up your pto. I could never . And then we just see Kageyama being nervous again. We've never seen him like this, yeah, and he and Oikawa are like antagonizing each other at the net.

em

21:46

Kageyama is watching Oikawa and he has this flashback of middle school of Oikawa winning like the best setter and when we kind of are getting a taste of their past together. And then, yeah, as Kageyama walks by, Oikawa stops when he's like I came to take down the genius setter, so do your best. And before Kageyama can even get a sentence out, here comes Hinata, arms out in front of Kageyama to almost as like in a protection stance, being like you know, we will not lose. And of course Kageyama does not appreciate that and he's like don't interrupt me when I'm talking.

rainbow

22:21

But then together, standing next to each other, they say they won't lose this time either. Yeah, I said, Hinata is the Kageyama protection squad. He sees Oikawa trying to knock Kageyama off his game and he comes to his rescue. He's like he. This episode is really showing the way that, like Hinata, like just he understands Kageyama and he, like he just knows, like I don't think it's even like a conscious thing. Yeah, it's just, it's something like they just have this connection and Hinata just goes up to Kageyama and is just like I got you, babe. Yeah, and now I just want to write a fic about Hinata protecting.

22:52

Kageyama from Oikawa Aoba Johsai is walking up and Oikawa turns to them all and says I believe in you, which is almost a joke but kind of a threat at the same time interesting.

rainbow

23:02

That's not what he says in the dub, which I kind of like that better. I like that. I believe in you. He says don't let me down, fellas. Oh my gosh, that's different that is different.

23:10

I will say, though, before that this is and there's a gif of this out there but like I was like walking out and like I guess he's probably like shaking out his wrists, yeah, , but he's just likeawa's like walking out and like I guess he's probably like shaking out his wrists, yeah, but he's just like he's like saying something like all right, let's do this thing. And he just looks so silly. He's a silly evil boy, just and completely limp wristed. Also, it's like I know what you are. So then he says I don't let me down, fellows. And then we have, like the coach, like just being like Oikawa says that before every game, and it sounds like it could be a joke, but the team really takes it to heart, and I think it's Shimada and Takanoe up in the stands who say the team's whole demeanor just changed after Oikawa said that.

em

23:49

They're locking in, basically. So the game starts and Oikawa starts off with a setter dump, which, of course, no one is really expecting, and it is a bold move and this is why we love Oikawa and he goes to them. I'll be doing that again, so don't just stand there, pay attention.

rainbow

24:03

I said, okay, country, it's definitely a mind game Like fucking, Oikawa is playing 4D chess with these games at all times. And so I wrote immediate setter dump to psych them out. Oikawa, serial killer, au win Because I, you win, , because I could just see him. I'm like imagining like detectives kage Hinata which they could never because they're db, but let's just pretend like detectives kage Hinata and Oikawa is like the serial killer that they're trying to catch and just oh, it would be fun, and it does work againstTanaka and Hinata tether, like okay, but is he gonna do it again?

em

24:37

he wouldn't do it again, but that's what he wants is a thing. And Daichi, you know, thankfully, the good, the good captain that he is is like there's no use.

rainbow

24:43

That's what he wants, I'm just imaginingTanaka and Hinata as  daphne from the scooby-doo movie, when the guy tells her not to go into the spooky castle and she's like you want me to go in that castle and that's why you told me not to go, so that I would go, or you don't want me to go into that like if you know you know I wish I had that, had it memorized, but like that's exactly what I just thought of in that moment, and then Oikawa fakes them out by looking like he's going to do a setter dump again, but then he switches to a set last minute.

25:13

To, of course, Iwaizumi yes and Awazami is like that was a little low and I was like, oh, okay, but. And he says, well, you do always seem to hit them either way. Yes, yeah.

em

25:22

I do love in their friendship. You know they humble each other constantly, especially Oikawa needs it.

rainbow

25:29

Yeah. And then Kageyama gets a chance to say I can do that too, and shocks everybody on the court by doing another setter dump. Like you see, like Oikawa's like looking at, like Oikawa's looking like he's like okay it. Oikawa's looking like he's like okay, it's not gonna be, it might not be shrimpy, but maybe it's gonna be the number three, maybe it's gonna be Tanaka, like who's it gonna be? And you see all the spikers are getting ready. And then cute little setter dump and everyone's like okay, what?

em

25:55

Yeah, before we get to that, the coaches, our Karasuno coaches, are realizing, even though they did win that practice match and that's kind of what they've been using to reassure the team with Oikawa now, because he wasn't there for the practice match it's totally different. And Daichi tells Tanaka and Hinata, come on, like he's really like keeping them focused. Like we knew Oikawa was amazing, but we have a skilled setter. That's just as good. And then, yes, like you say, Kageyama proves that and I do love that moment because, like so many also, he's coming in for a pipe they're all coming in and then he dumps it and he just like, and then he throws Oikawa's words back in his face and he says, like you know, I'm gonna do that again, so pay attention. I also love Suga's face, because they cut to Suga and Tsukki and Suga is just like okay, do that?

26:35

again he's like he does hate losing. I I said,  cunt, recognized cunt after all. And Kageyama is Oikawa's drag daughter that he never wanted. Yeah, he like, he's like I'm gonna do that again, pay attention, throwing the words back in his face. And Oikawa's just like so mad. He's just like you, little brat.

rainbow

26:53

and the in the dub he calls him a prick, and I love that. He's like you, little prick, and I'm like, oh, spicy, and that's how that episode ends, yeah, and we're just. We're just off to the races now and this very is this game, I think more than any other in this series is setter versus setter. This game in particular is about Kageyama versus Oikawa, and I want to talk a little bit in the spoiler zone, , about what happens in the rest in the next few episodes, but before we do that, we are going to get into our character spotlight it's everyone's favorite mommy Iwaizumi hajime yes, it is I freaking love Iwaizumi.

em

27:35

Everybody does.

rainbow

27:36

He's one of the characters I think everybody agrees on yeah, if you're out there and you hate awaisami, I don't know why, like, I feel like the only reason you could hate awaisami is if you like are trying to be like contrarian. You know everyone loves him, so you're like I don't think he's that great and you know, maybe you have reasons to hate him, but I don't see how you could. So I have a little note here about his personality. So Awazami's firm yet caring attitude has led some members of Abujose team to look up to and respect him. His underclassmen often gravitate towards him and he is seen giving calm and light-hearted advice to KanDaichi, which can contrast to how he treats Oikawa. He's also very respectful and does not treat his rivals coldly as Kageyama still treats him respectfully and Iwaizumi has acknowledged his skills. It is also seen through some extras by Furudate that while Iwaizumi can be strong and intimidating, he also has a goofy side where he loves monsters, and there's also, I think there's like one where he like finds like a fish that's named like Toru or something and like uses it to make fun of Oikawa. I think Oikawa kind of brings out the sillier side of Iwaizumi. Yeah, for sure, and I love that.

28:42

, so we have his name meaning. So his family name is Iwaizumi and iwa means rock, which makes a lot of sense for him, yeah. And then izi is spring or fountain, which I thought was interesting. Yeah, I kind of like that . And then hajime is one, oh okay, which I thought was interesting. , he was number one and then this was something I saw in reddit and I don't know if this is like. I think this is true, but Iwaizumi shares all of the kanji in his name with at least one other character. So there's two kanji in his name, oh, three Kanji total in his full name, and each of those Kanji can be found in at least one other character's name. Pretty cool. Then we have his character sheet. He goes to Aoba Johsai. He is the vice captain of the volleyball team. He's a third year and he's in class five. His position is wing spiker.

29:36

His height is 179.3 centimeters, which is about 5'8 yeah yeah, so yeah, he has the same height as you, two inches shorter than Oikawa, which I'm sure he hates. Oh yeah, , his birthday is june 10th, which is the  date of alexander the great's death, and I think we talked about this when we did Oikawa in the character spotlight that Oikawa shares his birthday with Alexander the Great and then Awazami shares his birthday with his death date, which I thought was very interesting. His favorite food is agedashi tofu. And then his current concern just one centimeter more, or seven millimeters at the very least. So I love that like, like, which I don't know. I don't know if you could call him a short king. I don't, I don't know.

em

30:22

I feel like for volleyball he that's.

rainbow

30:24

I mean, that's a that's kind of short for a guy, I feel and I think it's shorter for like a spiker, I think you can imagine like a setter or like a libero being like 5'8, but I think for a spiker, especially an ace, , like the wing spiker number four, I think that probably is pretty short on to his ability parameters. So his technique and his strategy are both threes, his speed, his stamina and his jumps are fours and his power is a five. Oh yeah, which? Totally? Do you have anything you want to say about Iwaizumi?

em

30:58

I'm gonna get into astrology because the wise of me is a gemini and Oikawa is technically a cancer, but I feel like he falls into this, into the cusp of cancer. Leo and I feel like they have a very leo gemini friendship where Oikawa is all about the dramatics and Iwaizumi is just a lot more even and kind of like brings him down. I just I like their dynamic a lot.

rainbow

31:18

Yeah, and it's funny because, like Waizi clearly has respect and love for Ikawa, but he's just so over his bullshit.

em

31:25

Well, you know, when everyone sucks his wiener all the time, he's kind of got to be that balance of like.

rainbow

31:30

You're not that hot of shit, baby. Well, and we see it in this episode that, like Waizi, is the only person that, like Oikawa, doesn't get away with his bullshit. He's like no bitch. Yeah, I'll come for you.

em

31:42

I hope all the Iwa Oyas are having a seat and getting comfortable because we're finally in that room of the house.

rainbow

31:49

Yeah, we are that. Spoiler alert. That is one thing that's missing from the Haikyuu movie. Oh my god, no.

em

31:54

Oikawa. Oikawa would have been so because everyone looks so good in the movie. Everyone's beautiful and like Oikawa would have been stunning.

rainbow

31:59

It's too bad, yeah, and there's just no reason for him to be there. No, and you know, and like the, the movie's all about Nekoma and karasuno, so it makes sense. But like, just give us like show, show us like Oikawa watching the game, because you know he's watching, yeah, you know, yeah, he's watching every move that Kageyama is making.

em

32:17

All right, are we ready for the world's favorite game? I think we are. It's who in Haikyuu, and we recently got this scenario from emby on Twitter, which we're really excited about If the Haikyuu players had walk-up songs, what do you think they'd pick, or what song do you think the team would prank them with?

rainbow

32:42

Today we're talking about Hinata, Kageyama, Oikawa, uwaisi, Daichi Suga, Ukai andTakeda.

32:44

We just don't really have a lot of characters to focus on in this episode. That's fine. I could have added Shimada and Takanoe. But I also just wanted to say that emby didn't actually submit this as a who in Haikyuu. They just posted about it on Twitter and it doesn't technically fall into like the who and haikyuu category, but I loved it so much I was like can we use this on the pod? Yeah and . They said yes, so thank you. . Yeah, so Hinata you can go.

em

33:07

I admittedly did not think too hard about these, so I don't really have any songs lined up.

rainbow

33:12

If you do, you can take the lead, yeah and I posted this on twitter , in reply to emby, but like I want it all by Queen Feels Very Hinata. I think there's other ones. Like Could have Been Me is another one. I think it's by the Struts no, I don't remember the name of the band and then I'm trying to think of like. Is there a song about being short, like the team would?

em

33:41

Well, short people got no reason to live.

rainbow

33:46

Yeah, feel free to add in tiktok sounds if you want, , but yeah, so I definitely want it all by queen is the first thing that comes to mind for him. And I feel, and I will say like, so the way that emby worded this is like, what songs do you think they would pick? And I think we're kind of going with what songs would we assign to them, rather than what songs they would pick for themselves. But I do like thinking of like what songs would people prank them to?

em

34:10

With Kageyama. I can't decide if he would either be more of an instrumental boy or if he would pick like a very lame like, either like Linkin - well, you're gonna be mad at me, but Linkin Park or Imagine Dragons like just something very basic.

rainbow

34:25

No, that's fine. I mean, what Linkin Park song would he choose? Well, if he's going up against, Oikawa would be In the End there you go. For this particular game. In the end, it doesn't even matter .

em

34:41

You had a song for Oikawa. I thought yeah, okay.

rainbow

34:44

Well, I have two songs. I have  both by Billie Eilish, I think for himself. Oikawa would pick.

em

34:50

You should see me in a crown which I think was a very famous tiktok edit song for him in the early days I'm sure .

rainbow

34:56

And then I think a song that the team would pick for him would be bad guy, by billie eilish and he would be pissing me like I'm not a bad guy at all. I do think I could see Oikawa doing like good luck, babe, when going up against Kageyama, or something like that, absolutely by chapel.

em

35:14

Roan roan, roan, roan, roan I never freaking say her name, right, apologies , I just thought of one for Iwaizumi and I think it's like , I don't know what pain was ozzy osbourne in.

rainbow

35:26

I'm ignorant but oh, metallica, I think. No, not metallica, oh no, no, I mean black sabbath black sabbath right so one's like, ah yes, oh yeah, that's like the viking song or whatever. Absolutely that would totally. Yeah, oh, why isn't? Me? Would totally have like a badass song like that, something like something really metal, something with screaming. Yeah, no, absolutely.

em

35:47

Like Oikawa would prank him with some really girly pop like song, He hit me baby one more time or something.

rainbow

35:53

Oh my God, yeah Something. Time or something like that. Oh my god, yeah Something. Britney, okay, Daichi,

em

35:55

something by Daughtry. I feel like he's like a modern dad rock dude.

rainbow

36:06

Yeah, I could definitely see him picking something like that. I don't know. What is there a song about dying? What is a song about being dead for?

em

36:14

Daichi that they would prank him with. I want to give Suga Kate Bush yeah , running up that hill. Yeah, I don't think that team would prank him with. I want to give Suga Kate Bush yeah, running up that hill. Yeah, I don't think the team would prank him. Yeah, no, I feel like the whole team respects Suga too much.

rainbow

36:27

Yeah, I don't think they would prank him with anything. Ukai An Eminem song. Lose yourself, you better lose yourself in the music the?

em

36:37

moment?

rainbow

36:38

Yes, absolutely I don't know what the I don't know if the team would prank him. I think they have too much respect for him. , and then I could seeTakeda.Takedas would be some sort of like fucking, like orchestral, yeah, like instrental, some sort of beautiful beautiful song.

em

36:56

That, that or Michelle Branch.

rainbow

36:59

Actually you're right. Actually it would be Closer. I Am Divine.

em

37:03

Closer. I Am Divine, okay, everyone, sorry everyone.

rainbow

37:07

Yeah, I'm really sorry.

em

37:08

Sorry, emby, I didn't think about specific songs. I just don't have the brainpower for it. But I hope that these answers are sufficient. If you guys think of things, always come to us on Twitter and share.

rainbow

37:19

Yeah, and we'll do this again for sure, and so maybe we'll have like more concrete answers, but I just I loved the idea of this and you know, and I think part of the reason I like doing the who and Haikyuu is like I want to inspire you all to think about these things yourselves as well.

38:07

It's 7 pm Friday. It's 9 to 5 degrees. Get into the spoiler zone and cool off with your bees. You have no idea what song I'm doing, what's happening. It's a song that's hot right now, girl, get into it. It's glorilla.

rainbow

38:26

I believe so we're jumping into the spoiler zone, , yeah, and so for this, I just kind of want to talk about and I mean this is like it's spoiler for like the next several episodes, yeah, but I just want to talk about like Kageyama's focus on beating Oikawa.

38:42

I think like I think, more than anything, that's kind of what loses them. This game, like I think, and Hinata not being able to make decisions for himself in the air when they're doing the freak quick, I think is a big thing which we talk about in season two. But I think for like you know and I'm like not trying to like put all the blame on Kageyama because you know it's the whole team loses together but I think if Kageyama was able to work through his beat, his like back, not his beef, but like work through yeah, work through his beef with Oikawa, I think it would be different. I almost wonder if, like Batman, , like he had to lose to Oikawa, I think it would be different. I almost wonder if like kind of like Batman, , like he had to lose to Oikawa first before he could beat him, like maybe this was inevitable, like he had to be bested by him in order to come back stronger, this whole season.

em

39:28

They've kind of been kicking butt and they have to find a conflict at some point and I feel like Kageyama does kind of learn his lesson about just focusing on Oikawa. We'll see that in a few episodes. I feel like it's just like the team is just not quite there. Oba Josai is a very strong team, a very strong complete team, and we'll get that with Iwa talking about. You know, it's a strong six and all that, and Karasuno is still very new and rough around the edges and I just feel like they just weren't quite there yet. I mean, they fight tooth and nail and they're so close, but it's just out of reach and of course they have to, and this will lead them to learning specific lessons about the freak quake and stuff that they have to overcome in order to beat them next time yeah, and I think that's kind of interesting.

rainbow

40:08

Like, when it comes to a character like Oikawa, who has like, who like suffers defeat every year, usually at the hands of Ushijima, I think the fact that it's his team that like finally defeats Karasuno is important, because defeat is an important part of playing a sport. It's like it's failure, it's an important part of learning, it's an important part of growing and, like, I think, when it comes to like practice matches and like losing to Nekoma over and over again, that's a little bit different than losing in a game yeah, because now that it's, it's over for them.

40:38

They can't continue on. Yeah, it's their, it's their game over. So I just thought that was interesting and like I I think, because we're doing the analysis of this, this was the first time I really focused so much on Kageyama's state of mind and like his emotional state in this and the way that is very clearly affecting him. Like he goes for that intense setter dump, which is really cool and stuff. But again, that's like showing that he is focused on Oikawa and I.

41:02

It's not even just about beating him. I think there's a little bit of him trying to like prove himself to Oikawa because I think like he wanted Oikawa to be his rival and I think maybe there was a part of him that thought maybe Oikawa could be his someone better, but Oikawa rejected that and so Kageyama is like kind of trying to like force his way in and see like you should respect me and you should see me as a rival and as an equal and like you shouldn't see me as tobyo chan. But that's just. You know that that can't be your focus, honey yeah, not everyone's gonna be Suga, you know.

em

41:35

Yeah, yeah they're, and we'll get more into this with more of their backstory. But their relationship does kind of make me sad, at least for Tobio, because it's like he just looked up to Oikawa and he just, I think, yeah, wanted to be taken under his wing. But Oikawa was just so shaken that this little kid was kicking his ass that it just became this nasty rivalry instead of a healthy one and it wasn't even.

rainbow

41:55

And that's the thing, and it makes me sad for you, Oikawa, too, because Kageyama wasn't kicking his ass, Kageyama was just good and the coaches were commenting on that. And because Oikawa like looks down on himself so much, he really took that as like it's like one of those things where it's like you know, like when you're comparing like yourself to other people, like you're always going to like see yourself as coming up short, and I'm sure he thinks, like when he hears the coaches talking about how good Kakeyama is, maybe he's thinking to himself well, they, they probably have never said that about me and it's like, no, they probably have said that while you're on the court playing, you just weren't there to see it. Yeah, , but you know, Oikawa, low self-esteem, king, and I feel you, they are just kids after all. Yeah, they're children.

em

42:39

Okay.

rainbow

42:40

I think that's it. This is a shorty. I think episodes are going to be a little short when it comes to these, just like games, because it's like what are we going to say? And then they bumped the ball. And then Kageyama set the ball, yeah, and then they spiked the ball.

em

42:53

Yeah, exactly. So. Yeah, I mean, this is just the beginning, ladies and gentlemen, the next, like six episodes is going to be this game, and it's great. It's great stuff, so get into it.

rainbow
