Hello everyone and welcome to Fly a queer Haikyuu podcast. My name is Rainbow they she
em
00:12
and I'm Em she her and today we did it, y'all.
rainbow
00:16
We made it to season two, episode one. Em is so excited.
em
00:22
Brothers, I'm feeling ganky okay, and that's all I got to say. I love this episode. Also, we're having a fucking break in our heat wave. Finally. It's only like 80 something right now.
rainbow
00:33
It's amazing, it's not 100 degrees and it's not going to get 100 degrees by 2pm.
em
00:38
Let me tell you we always talk about winter depression, but summer depression and a really hot climate is its own thing. I haven't looked out a window in three weeks.
rainbow
00:48
Yeah, we have to keep our apartment cave-like to avoid overheating, and part of that is because our landlords refuse to do anything about our shitty AC. But that's a conversation for another time.
em
00:59
Kids. When you're moving into an apartment, make sure you pay a lot of attention to how old your unit looks like. All right, the point is, I'm feeling fucking good today, yes.
rainbow
01:09
And before we get into the Haikyuu stuff, which we will get into shortly, we have another fun, gay Japanese thing to talk about.
em
01:17
I love a fun gay Japanese thing to talk about. Yeah, I want to give you all homework. Okay, because we were going to do a who and Haikyuu scenario based on this dating show on Netflix that came out just a few weeks ago called the Boyfriend. You may have heard of it. You may love it. If you haven't, please check it out. We decided to hold off on doing the Boyfriend episode because there's a few more characters we want to meet and we will meet them shortly. But I figured okay, this is a to give you guys homework. I want you, if you have not, go watch the Boyfriend.
rainbow
01:48
There's eight episodes out now I think there's only two left to premiere. Yeah Well, by the time, this episode releases, everything will be out. You'll be able to binge watch it to your heart's content.
em
01:55
It's like 10 episodes and it is a dating show for exclusively Japanese men. So listen me and Rainbow are not dating show people Like I don't know about Love Island, I don't know about how blind the love is, but if it's gay, we're gonna check it out. We watched Queer Love ultimatum which had its issues, but at least it was gay. So when this trailer came across our desks, we were like, yes, absolutely, and it's been. It's been such a joy we're loving it. It's, it's a really good show. It's been such a joy we're loving it.
rainbow
02:23
It's a really good show. I mean it's a reality TV show, so it's exploitative to a certain extent, but it's not like an American show. It is very Japanese in that they are very polite to each other, they're very quiet. There's nobody like yelling and screaming at each other. There is somebody who you could kind of call the villain, but even then he's not really villainous.
02:45
It does have drama and it has fun twists and turns and I don't know how much the producers are influencing people's decisions. You never know when it comes to reality tv, but I think it's very good and you know, one of the biggest problems with the ultimatum queer love is that which is very, very clearly made by street people for street people, and there's a lot of things we could talk about when it comes to that, but the boyfriend feels very much like it is made by people who are queer and or who are queer allies and who really want, who really want to de-stigmatize yeah, you know, queerness.
em
03:18
I think it's important because I know japan is not quite there yet with the acceptance of the queer community and so I think it's important for that reason and, like you said, for me the difference between the japanese culture of reality and american culture has been like one of the most interesting things because, like as you already said, they're so polite and like quiet and like the biggest problem so far has been one of the guys is such like a meaty boy that he drinks chicken smoothies and they have to, like they have a budget and he's going over budget with the you guys just have to fucking watch it minim three episodes where the chicken causes a problem and it's so.
rainbow
03:53
It's really really good and it's just it's amazing. And you know again, there's different complaints we could make about it. they are all very like traditionally handsome people all very thin, like that kind of thing. We're not saying it's perfect, but we are saying that you should watch it, because nothing you watch is ever going to be perfect. But this is amazing. It's a fun watch.
em
04:14
I love the way that the structure is, like the way they come up with things to put them in different situations. They run a coffee truck, so like, just a quick example is they'll be like all right, you pick someone to be your co-worker and that kind of you know, lets, you know who likes who. Everyone seems to like this one guy, and then there is this one couple that hit it off right away, but they're very like young and toxic, and so we just we want to get into it, but it'll be more fun if you guys know what we're talking about. So, homework, watch, watch the Boyfriend and love yourself.
rainbow
04:42
Thank you, yes, okay Now moving on to another kind of boyfriends Kagehina. It's a good episode for Kagehina, great episode for Kagehina. Oh, before we get into that, though, we do have a little bit of housekeeping, because it is season two.
em
04:55
It is season two and I just want to say, get ready for well. I don't work, but because it's a new season, I want to do some new things to signify. So there will probably be a different opening and closing theme, beefing up the who and Haikyuu section. And yeah, I don't know, we're always open to if you guys are like, oh, you guys should incorporate this, or blah, blah, blah. We want to keep things fresh because you know, you always got to keep changing, you always got to stay interesting.
rainbow
05:25
Exactly, I love that. Yeah, always feel free to write in with any suggestions you have. For right now, I think we're going to keep the format pretty much the same. We're going to go ahead and tell you up top we don't have a character spotlight for this episode. We've decided first and last episodes we won't have character spotlights. But you know, I think this episode is going to give us enough to talk about where we're not going to be running short no, absolutely not.
em
05:44
And with that shall we move on. That's all, folks. Yeah, seriously, I don't know what just happened to me there that's okay.
rainbow
05:54
Are you ready for your recap? Yes, let's get into it. All right, I'll count you down, all right, three two one.
em
06:01
it's the first episode of season two, the animation sharper, the stakes are higher and our boys are more revved up than ever to get to nationals. Takada brings the news of an upcoming training camp in Tokyo, and Kagehina meet an upcoming challenger. However, will they be able to go to the training camp or will their bad grades get in the way of this eagle versus crow showdown? Settle in for an even better and gayer season.
rainbow
06:22
Yes, settle in for an even better and gayer season. Yes, I love that you mentioned the animation getting sharper, because that was the first thing I noticed. As soon as this episode started, I was like hang on, somebody has more money.
em
06:33
Absolutely, because it starts with that flashback of losing to Seijoh and you can already tell it's crisper brighter, there's more money put into it, for sure.
rainbow
06:43
Yeah, they put more money and more of their pussies into it, and if only they would have kept that up.
em
06:48
Listen we'll talk about it.
rainbow
06:50
There's extenuating circumstances, but yeah, and you know, I think that just speaks to the success of season one. You know, em and I were not watching Haikyuu as it was coming out, so we didn't get to experience the excitement of it.
07:06
But I can only imagine, based on you know, what they did with seasons two, three, even four. That, like season one probably did really really good and I know the manga did really well, like this is a beloved series and I think even the English dub is better in season two. I think they step it, step it up in all regards. Yeah.
em
07:22
I was thinking like because I saw that season two premiered october in 2015 and I was just thinking about where I was in 2015 finishing college with a boyfriend. I was such a different person. I wasn't ready for haikyuu yet, and it's just so weird to think here we are, nearly 10 years later, bringing it to life in our podcast.
rainbow
07:39
Oh, the staying power of a good story. After the Seijoh flashback, we get get Hinata's little speech.
em
07:46
Yes, his tall, tall wall monologue that opens every fucking season.
rainbow
07:51
And you know, we see just him at first getting the gym ready to play some volleyball and he's standing alone on the court. But then who approaches him?
em
07:59
Well, he's saying the view from the top. It's a view I can never see on my own, but if I'm not doing it on my own and q kageyama steps up and the light shines upon him, and then we cut to Hinata smiling at him, and the light is shining on him too, and it's just the two of them, because they're there.
08:15
They got to practice first and they're there to get in a little extra practice before everyone else it's like these are moments where it's like I don't need to go on about how gay this is. I can just give you the context and y'all can run with it.
rainbow
08:25
Yeah, you know. If you've made it all the way through this first season of our podcast, you know what it's about.
em
08:30
Exactly so. Karasuno is having a little practice match with each other and we're kind of seeing, like, where our boys are at, they're strong, they're good.
rainbow
08:48
Yam working on his jump float. Hinata is, you know, using the width of the court, and kageyama is using him as a decoy. Tanaka is fucking killing it, but even then, we see the non-starters. We see Suga killing it, like you mentioned, yamaguchi.
em
08:58
We see Noya doing his rolling thunder yes, oh, and we have a little moment where Tanaka gets it through and him and Hinata share a high five, and then he turns to Kageyama, who is still awkward, and Tanaka's like get used to it already. Tanaka is. So me trying to get a shy person to open up. I'm like let's go Hurry up.
rainbow
09:15
I think it's cute. I think it's clear that Kageyama is getting better.
em
09:18
At least, though, because he knows what it is now I and I love how they say yay in japanese. He's like way, yeah, he's like oh, he's so awkward, I love it yeah, he gets blocked and we see him racing and speaking again of this good animation. The way he like races through the court, you can really feel like just like the like, the raw, like desperation he has to to to stand on the court yeah, you understand why people are fooled by him.
rainbow
09:46
Yeah, because he really seems like every time he's going that he is going to get that ball. It's like there's no other choice, yeah, but for Hinata to be the one to hit it. And there is a small moment in the dub that I really appreciated, which is when suki goes to spike and he does a little dink yeah and it's kagehina going to block him and they're mad because they didn't get to block him.
10:05
And Tsukishima says you guys will fall for anything. And kageyama says shut up you four-eyed mouth. Or shut your four-eyed mouth up, oh my god, it's like you're so db.
em
10:14
The insults in this episode are amazing that is one word for them for sure. so Hinata gets that over and it wins them that practice match, and Ukai tries to wrap it up, but they all want one more, all of them even though he doesn't ask for them. He tries to say to Daichi, like, come on, get your team together. But they're all like looking at him with the hunger oh, they all want to eat.
rainbow
10:38
And then, even after they're all done, practicing Hinata isn't done and he demands that kageyama toss him some sets. And Kageyama is like yeah, let's go.
em
10:47
He hups too whenever Hinata is like let's keep going. He's like you can keep going right.
rainbow
10:52
Yeah, exactly. Yeah, that's the thing, because it's a challenge. It's like you're not tired yet, right? And Kageyama's like no, I'm not tired, I could still. I could toss you forever and I will.
em
11:00
I have to go to AO3 right now.
rainbow
11:02
There is a moment that I want to talk about here, which I don't know if you noticed this, but after Hinata and Kageyama run off, it shows, I think, Daichi. It shows somebody talking I think it's Ukai probably but in the background you have Yamaguchi and Tsukishima, and Yamaguchi looks at Tsuki and Tsuki looks away and adjusts his glasses and I wasn't sure. I was like like oh is, is that maybe a moment where they're laughing at them, or is Tsukishima maybe feeling something there? Like I wasn't sure. If maybe he's potentially feeling like, oh well, like I don't have the energy to keep practicing, or like I'm not going, like I don't know, it's just an interesting moment and, like you know, it's an animation, so like they chose to animate that and I couldn't help but wonder what that means and if anyone else has any ideas, I'd love to know.
em
11:44
Please write in yeah, I know what you're talking about because that's right after Kagehina keep going and Ukai's thinking to himself like okay, we're realizing our potential, but we need more experience. He's having that little thought to himself and I think you're on to something. I think Suki feels annoyed and like challenged by Kagehina's never-ending stamina, and I think there's this attitude of like.
rainbow
12:03
You know, a lot of the characters are like killing yourself is not the answer, like calm down, and are kind of put off by that, and I think that that's kind of what's going through Suki's mind there, and Yamaguchi, I think, is a little bit more on the side of like we should try and match that and we should do our best and ganbare chill out and kind of like what shamada was saying to yamaguchi at the in episode 25 of season one, where he was like when you see other people doing better, you want to rise to meet them and this, you know, I don't think it's getting into a spoiler to say that like we're getting into a Tsukishima arc, yeah, in the next few episodes, and I think this is the seeds of it.
12:38
And it's just another moment in this show where I'm like, oh, you were setting this up way before I knew it was coming. And then we do have a little moment where you get to see the other people stretching and of course it's like all the ships are paired up and Noya is helping Asahi stretch and clearly like taking it a little like he's like putting his knee into his back and I was like I have to go to AO3 right now.
em
12:58
Yeah, Asahi's, like it hurts. And then so we have takara, who bursts through the door, as he loves to do when he has news, with a nosebleed yes, bleeding and saying tokyo and there's a training camp. Everybody get excited. Your favorite arc is coming up. It's the tokyo training summer camp.
rainbow
13:17
Oh, and we and not to say that we don't also fucking love that we are so hyped for it and like Hinata's hyped, he's's like Nekoma, like we get to and we get to see them, we see their shadow and then we turn to all of them.
em
13:28
Yes, and this is when Kenma sneezes and his phone flies out of his hand and Kuro catches the phone.
rainbow
13:39
And then and he has like a big snot bubble coming Yaku offers a tissue.
em
13:42
I was like Kuro is the main dad, but the whole team takes care of Kenma. Yeah, yeah, they all baby him.
rainbow
13:48
But I specifically the way that Kuro was like looking at Kenma, I was like he thinks he's so cute when he sneezes. I have to go to AO3 right now. But they say not just Nekoma. Fukurodani is the only other team that they specifically name and we will meet them yeah, well, because they specifically say the Fukurodani group because Nekoma gets brought is is part of this group.
14:09
It's like four schools who they often train together and because of the connection between Karasuno and Nekoma, because of Nekomata and old coach Ukai and Takada's persistence, you know, they've been invited to join, which is a really amazing opportunity for them, which I don't know if they. I think maybe they talk a little bit about how good of a school fukuro donnie is, but like these are really, these are top tier schools.
em
14:32
They are getting to play well and Ukai does emphasize how these are relationships that are built over years and how karasuno has kind of lost all of those connections with grandpa Ukai. And this is a very cute Taka Ukai moment, because Ukai's like thank your teacher and Takano's like well, really it was your name that helped, like it's very like no you, honey, no you, oh my God.
rainbow
14:53
No, there's another cute moment I want to talk about in just a second, but we do have.
em
14:56
Karasuno and Nekoma being the little rivals that they are, because kageyama is all scary and excited to see kenma's little set tricks up close.
rainbow
15:03
So then, kenma shivers, yes, which also we haven't talked a lot about kagekin as a ship but like it has rights I think it's fun. I've seen like a few headcanons. It's definitely a rare pair. It's definitely not like the first ship that comes to mind for either of them, but I think it's a cute idea and I think you could really like just. I think their personalities could be like fun and interesting yeah as a ship and I don't know, does anyone have any good fics they want to recommend?
em
15:26
because I'd read it. Gemworld has been on his Kage Ken shit on Twitter.
rainbow
15:31
Jim was doing some amazing Kenma headcanons the other day. Oh yeah, kage or just Kenma, or Kage Kenma, lots of just just different. There was a. I saw Kage Ken. I saw Ken Hina.
em
15:39
I think he was doing.
rainbow
15:40
I think he was just in his. Like kinma should be loved by everyone hell.
em
15:44
Yeah. Yeah, I feel like kage ken. I'm kind of neutral on, but like, let's say, we are literally playing with barbies, I'll watch someone play with kage ken out of interest for a little while and then move on and for me there is something like I like a lot of throuples when it comes to like kage hina, so like I think a kage Kagekenhina is really fun, especially. I love giving Kagehina a third.
rainbow
16:06
Yeah, they deserve a third, a fourth, a fifth, however many they want, they can have them Also. Kagehina does a lot more smiling this season. We've seen him smile so much more just this season, and he smiles specifically when Hinata vows to get past Nekoma's wall.
em
16:25
He has a little smile and I'm just gonna kill someone. I feel like Kagehina are at like a high point right now in their partnership and even in their friendship, which will of course be brought down low but that's fine, but right now we're in a good spot. You know they've done a lot of stuff together.
rainbow
16:35
Now they're strong and yeah, no, I feel like Kageyama is kind of easing up a little bit and like relaxing and then, right before Takeda goes, we get to see another cute little Ukai taka moment, where Takeda's like I've got a faculty meeting, I'm running late too, but you can take care of the volleyball stuff, right, coach? And you guys like you got it and it was just so cute. Their parents, they really are their little parents to these 14 children. And then Kiyoko she has a little moment too, where she's like I'll do my best too.
em
17:03
Yes, I said, everyone's hyped, even Kiyoko, and we see why. In the next scene cut to. Hinata is about to have lunch and there's whispers of a hot third year, and of course it's Kiyoko who is visiting the first year floor and runs into Hinata and asks if he knows anyone who hasn't joined a club yet.
rainbow
17:23
Yes, and we don't know exactly where she's going with that, but we'll find out soon, very soon.
17:25
And I have a note that poor bisexual Hinata is getting all flustered that Kiyoko wants to talk to him. He's like, oh, excuse me. And like one of the guys is like well, you know that, hottie, and it does, like it brought me back to like. I feel like I felt this especially in middle school when I was in like sixth grade, which for my middle school it was sixth, seventh and eighth grade. And so when I was in sixth grade and I had friends who were in eighth grade and when I would get to like talk to them in front of my other sixth grade friends, I felt so cool. I was like, wow, I'm talking to an older student.
em
17:52
Hinata won so many fucking Riz points that day Hinata has all the Riz.
rainbow
17:57
Everyone loves him. There's so many fics out there about Kageyama being mad that Hinata's so popular, oh my god for sure.
em
18:03
Back in the club room the boys are angrily reading Volleyball Monthly that is featuring Oikawa. We learn about his favorite food, milk bread, and his saying if you're gonna hit it, hit it till it breaks. They're all like so shook by that line too, dude, I will say Tanaka's dub line delivery in this part is so perfect.
rainbow
18:22
He's just so anger. This line, which I think is amazing. Volleyball Monthly did an article about that butt weasel Oikawa and I was like, is that a gay slur? Butt weasel, that sounds like one. I don't think it's meant to be, but just knowing that Oikawa is the gayest gay who's ever gayed, and then you call him a butt weasel it's like oh, wow, yeah, it's ridiculous.
em
18:46
Tanaka and Hinata, of course, who has to follow Tanaka's footsteps everywhere are yelling and Suga has to hit Tanaka Like you're gonna rip the magazine. And that's when we see Ushiwaka. Ushijima is in youth world and I clocked this moment because Yamaguchi doesn't know what that is, and Sekishima, who doesn't care about volleyball but is a fucking volleyball encyclopedia, tells him about what it is.
rainbow
19:07
I caught that too. I was like wait, so hang on. Yamaguchi doesn't know about this, but you do. Sikishima, that's so interesting. I thought it was just a club. It's just like how he knew every piece of detailed gossip about Kageyama.
em
19:18
Like our boy is tuned the fuck in to volleyball FM.
rainbow
19:22
You can't even play.
em
19:23
So he explains that Ushijima basically represents Japan in the under 19 category and this is just kind of a reminder to our boys that Oikawa and Ushijima, this is who we have to beat to get to nationals.
rainbow
19:33
Yeah, I said, we're setting up the rivals for the next couple of seasons.
em
19:36
We have Oikawa and Ushijima, and I'm very excited, yes, and Daichi has come and said we're going to go running, running drills. They're like yeah.
rainbow
19:46
Yes, I think, and I think also, before we get to them running drills, we get a moment of Takeda, yes, who has to be the responsible faculty advisor. This is the reality.
em
20:02
He's looking at a few of our boys grades and they're not good one teacher walks by and he's just like his soul has left his body. He's a shell of a man saying over and over they can do it if they try. They can do it if they try and then we get.
rainbow
20:08
We're starting off real gay here.
em
20:09
People in episode one yeah, running drills on heartbreak hill, which I keep forgetting. I want to do some sort of like one shot about heartbreak hill, which is this tall mountain that they run up for their running drills, and so they're going by twos.
rainbow
20:24
We see sukiyama, we see the npcs, h the npcs. We see Asahi and Suga, and then we get to Kagehina, who, like, lock eyes with each other before they start because, no, this isn't just a simple run up the hill for exercise.
em
20:38
We're we're actually racing each other yeah, this is not a warm-up. This is about our tally and our competition, and also the way that they are just looking at each other and screaming as they run like this is so unnecessary, like what?
rainbow
20:53
like they run past everyone else. And Tanaka's like, yelling at them, like hey, like you're supposed to stop now. Tsukishima's like we should just let them go. And yeah, well, like you're not going to stop them. They're so laser focused on each other. They literally are running as fast as they can side by side, looking into each other's eyes like I'm gonna beat you. No, I'm gonna beat you. I have to go to a03 right now. I promise to stop saying that so much, but I can't help it no, it's, it's gonna be our signal.
em
21:19
It's like the new pause. So they end up in a different prefecture which they're in the same prefecture.
rainbow
21:25
They're just in like a different area areas, excuse me, and I don't know if I think it's like kind of a different town or a different district or something, and I don't know if it does this in the sub, but in the dub, when they realize that they're in a different area, when they realize that they've blown past where they were supposed to, there's like birds in the background and they're saying bird brain, bird brain is that what they're saying?
em
21:46
that's so funny. The crows are going ahon ahon, which I think is a word for like dumbass or nitwit or something, yes, which sounds much more natural for the sound that the crows make, but I love that they fit something in there for the tub, and then kageyama is the one who says like oh, this is near where Shiratorizawa is, and, as they're saying that, who is running past them? Yes, because then Hinata says oh, isn't that the school Ushiwaka goes to yes, and he hears this and he stops and he's like, do you need?
rainbow
22:15
something. Do you need something for me? And then they're frozen and they're shook. And I do want to say we haven't done a lot of anime versus manga in a while, which, full disclosure, I dropped the ball. I haven't been reading the manga.
em
22:27
That's okay, because I totally forgot that that was a section we were doing.
rainbow
22:30
Oh, it was it, you know, and I just it comes up naturally. I think this is one of those moments where this meeting of Ushijima happens later in the manga it happens after we meet a new character. I understand why they did it this way in the anime. One thing it's for. One thing it's a little bit gayer because it's Kagehina racing each other and then getting lost together because they're dumbasses. And then, I think, because this is the first episode of the season and we're really setting things up, I think they really wanted to set up Ushijima here rather than waiting, and I'm glad they did it in this first episode. I think that's the best way to go. Not to say it was bad in the manga or anything. I think it made sense for the manga, but just with the structure of the anime this works out perfectly.
em
23:13
Yeah, absolutely. They have such a little kid older kid dynamic here with Ushijima. They're rival and there's something he wants to be, but they're all kind of, they're still like a little starry-eyed about him. And Kageyama, whose autism matches Ushijima's very well, is like can we come to Shiratorizawa and retcon aka spy on you and Hinata's like you just asked him that straight up. It's supposed to be a secret.
rainbow
23:30
Yes, and I will say so. I think overall the dub is better in season two. But I think specifically Kageyama's voice actor, I think, does a lot better, because the way he reads this line is so funny, it's so awkward. He's like we're from the Karasuno volleyball team and we want to go to your school and spy on you. That's in a lot of dub compilations and it's just very funny and I'm sure, like to like a Japanese speaker, like a fluent Japanese speaker. I bet it sounds just as funny in the Japanese.
em
23:56
And Ushijima is not fettered. He's like well, we won't get weaker if you watch us. So I'm going back to the school so you can follow me, if you can keep up.
rainbow
24:04
Which he doesn't know yet, that you can't challenge Kagehina.
em
24:09
They're like speaking in monster language without even realizing it, because Hinata, kagehina. They're like speaking in monster language without even realizing it, because Hinata is like are you running by yourself? And he's like no, the others are just slow, yeah, so then he starts to run and kageyama starts to run and Hinata's like don't get a head start. And kageyama goes you're just slow, like very much just copying your cooler, older brother.
rainbow
24:28
Yeah, I didn't even catch that. But yeah, you're totally right about that. Also, I don't know if he says this in the sub, but in the dub Ushiwaka says Karasuno, that's that team with the lightning fast, yes, quick. And it's like he knows about them and he's heard of that and I'm sure he's been curious. But he's Ushijima. So he's like, well, it doesn't matter, I'll beat them anyway, right. And so I think he does recognize that like they could potentially be a challenge, and so he's kind of pushing that a little bit. He's like, okay, let's see if you can keep up with me. Yeah, and run to school Like it won't, it won't change anything if you see us practicing, yeah, but go ahead.
em
24:59
You can watch. So they're all running and Kageyama is very serious and he's watching Ushijima.
rainbow
25:13
He's like, of course he runs at totally in a person. He is like he is bounding after Ushijima like it's nothing, because Kageyama is like wow, like this is, this is a little tough.
em
25:17
He's running pretty fast. Hinata is me learning how to drive in the parking lot going weee and my dad being like don't say weee, this isn't fun, because Kageyama was like what is this your first time running? Yeah, and the dubby says you're like a little puppy out for his first walk yeah. So they're arguing and Ushijima kind of looks behind him and it's like yes, this is Kagehino, Welcome, they're going to beat you and they're gay. Yes absolutely.
rainbow
25:38
And it is insane that Hinata has like zero trouble keeping up with Ushijima. He's like this is nothing. He really is like a little puppy he's just like yay.
25:54
It just fast and strong and a good jumper, and that is, he came out the pussy that way, yes, and then we get into the inequity metaphor of iq with Shiratorizawa, which is it's Shiratorizawa academy, which I feel like academy denotes like maybe like a fancier school, like I don't know if it's like the equivalent of like a private school, yeah, but that seems to be the case because we meet other academies. I mean, fukuro donnie is an academy and like that's like a richy, rich private school. In Shiratorizawa they have horses, like the buildings are amazing.
em
26:18
Shiratorizawa is so me, because I grew up pretty like middle, lower middle class. And so like me touring colleges and going to fancy places. So me like getting impressed at the fact that he's like it's so big, they have signs and like all the and the big fancy bus and like it's very relatable to someone who grew up not super rich as well to just be like all impressed by like the fancy shit. And of course, they end up losing Ushijima and are lost it's so funny.
rainbow
26:43
In the dub, kagema says you better not get us lost here too to Hinata, and he's just like whatever dad. And then they both realize that they're lost and they're jumping around like idiots. I love them. They really do share the same brain cell. Yep, they're like so we're lost.
em
26:57
But then they end up. They find they're like this looks like it's the gym, and then Ushijima walks up and I'm like what has Ushijima been doing this whole time while they've been lost and running around Like the timing just a little bit? It is interesting because in the dub he's like oh, I'm glad to see you finally made it. And it's like well, where have you been, honey? They got here. They got here right before you did, before Ushijima, I got a little ahead of myself. They're like crowding around watching and they're noting that they're playing a college team, because Shiratorizawa is so good that any other high school team wouldn't be an actual practice for them, which I am a little confused about okay, so like the team was out running, but then they're doing a practice match like?
rainbow
27:33
is it like the b team is practicing?
em
27:35
that could be it. Shiratoru zawa is a huge team with a bunch of people. So yeah, I mean the details do get a little fuzzier on here, but whatever, it's a cool moment, so we'll ignore that it doesn't matter. It doesn't matter, just just slip on by it and so then kageyama is like this is when I should actually introduce myself, and it's just kind of funny because he's like you know, I'm Kageyama Tobio and Ushijima recognizes that name. He's like oh, from Kitagawa Daichi, and he's like you know, me yeah.
rainbow
27:59
And Kageyama's like yeah, I applied here, but I didn't get in. And Ushijima's like I'm not surprised yes, he reads him for filth.
em
28:05
He's like I saw you play. We don't need a setter that can't serve the ace.
rainbow
28:08
Yeah he's like yeah, he says something in the dub it's specifically like you know, we have no room on our team for a setter who isn't going to devote themselves fully to their ace. And Hinata laughs and he's like yeah, that's you. You wouldn't be devoted to anyone. And I'm like Kageyama is devoted to you, Hinata. Neither of you realize it, yet that's the only thing.
em
28:33
Yeah, seriously. And then Hinata brings up that. That's also true for Oikawa, though, and Kageyan was like Oikawa has nothing to do with this. And then Ushijima's ears perk up. He's like Oikawa, he's an efficient player. He should have come to this school Like his own version of having a crush, I think.
rainbow
28:42
Ushijima wants Oikawa to be devoted to him and he wants Oikawa to bring out the best in his team, because that's what he says he Oikawa is a setter who brings out the best in whatever team he's on. And so Ushijima clearly which at the end of season two we will talk about my ushioi feelings, but like Ushijima clearly thinks like if Oikawa was on this team, he would bring out even more in me than I'm already capable of doing. He would make us stronger. And Ushijima is being kind of an arrogant, elitist asshole here. I will say that he's being very blunt and I feel like a lot of people are like oh, Ushijima is just blunt, he's not an asshole, and I'm like this is like textbook elitism.
em
29:18
Absolutely. And I'm sure Ushijima is not thinking about the advantages that his school has over others, because, yeah, he starts this whole monologue about how Oikawa would bring out a strong team would make him even stronger, and then he's like team would make him even stronger, and then he's like a sapling must have good soil in order to grow, in this weird way of shading Seijoh saying that they weren't good soil. Hinata takes great offense to this. He thinks about kendaichi and Iwaizumi, who all are strong players, which he was absolutely being a fucking elitist snob with this, because Seijoh is strong like you're just the strongest also, this whole metaphor is the reason people think of Ushijima as a gardener.
rainbow
29:55
I think like a lot of people headcanon him, like there's a lot of plant stuff related, like they think of him as like oh, he's like, he has a garden. It's just because of this weird metaphor he has and I do love the animation of that where he's just like only lush and fertile soil yeah, it can bring forth fruit.
em
30:09
Like okay, first of all you're sounding a little eugenic, see, I don't know about this, yeah. But , Hinata, like I said, takes great offense and he's like are you saying Seijoh is weak? He's like everyone aside from Oikawa is weak. And Hinata locks in and is like, if Seijoh is bad soil, then what are we concrete? And he like steps up and we have Hinata. Scary face number. What three, four?
rainbow
30:30
I would say this is the scariest Hinata face we've seen. This is like if I were Ushijima I would be running away because that boy's about to tear your throat out with his teeth. What do you?
em
30:40
mean submit to Hinata is a serial killer au right now. Because, yeah, it's like a challenge. He's like, oh, so what? I'm from the concrete and like very scary, and even kagayama is watching this and noting like Hinata's usually scared of strong players, but he's like challenging ushi, basically.
30:55
And then we have the moment oh, the ball like comes out of nowhere from the gym and Ushijima jumps up to grab it and Hinata again runs like his life depends on it, jumps even higher than the very tall Ushijima and grabs it from him and it's just like silence and Ushijima is like stunned.
rainbow
31:12
Kageyama has the creepiest fucking proud smile well, because Hinata says, like you don't see him at first, like his eyes are down, and he says I'm Hinata Shouyo from the concrete, yeah, and I'm going to nationals afteroshoyo from the concrete, yeah, and I'm going to nationals after I kick your ass. Yep, yeah, and Kageyama has that smile yeah. And do you want to talk about your feelings about this moment?
em
31:32
so this moment, ladies and gentlemen and I often quote this as my favorite episode, even though there are many very good episodes but this was the moment that really, I think, hooked me into the show. Like I'd watched all of season one and I liked it, but this I was like there's just something about. First of all, I love the duo of Kagehina. I love a good duo, like I said before, like they really are like partners now, and just the way that like Kageyama was clearly so proud of Hinata in that moment, just like took me and ran and I have never been the same since Like and I have never been the same since Like. That is the moment I became the Kagehina shipper that I am today. You literally had to run to AO3.
rainbow
32:06
I had to go to AO3.
em
32:07
I had to make a Twitter account. I had to change my life right now because of that moment. Then we have our eagle and crow imagery.
rainbow
32:13
You know, Ushijima is our eagle and he's going against the crows, the visual metaphors here because then they're like racing through the sky and they're like fighting each other, and then they land and you get the eagle behind Ushijima and he's in his lush garden and the crow is in the garbage dp behind Kagehina, and it is just I love it.
em
32:33
So then a teacher happens to notice that Kagehina is here and it's like you don't go to this. He's like you look poor, get out of here. You don't even go here. He smells the poor and says get, get away. And so Hinata walks away after like that, delivering that very cool line, and move. And then Kageyama was like well, I need to say something cool. And he's like if Oikawa is the best setter in the prefecture, I'm the one who's going to surpass him. Oh, and another thing too is I love how politely and you'll notice this more in the sub, but Hinata speaks very politely to Ushijima- no, I, you clock that in the dub too.
rainbow
33:04
He's very nice, he's like. Thank you very much for letting us, okay, good.
em
33:07
I'm glad they get that across because, yeah, he, he speaks very politely and is like thank you for showing us goodbye. And then Kageyama kind of follows suit and they walk away. And then Ushijima gets that monster smile, which is something we've seen on Oikawa and we see on all the monsters who realize they have a good challenge.
rainbow
33:22
I yeah. My note is another rival has fallen under Kage Hina's spell.
em
33:26
Absolutely.
rainbow
33:26
He's hooked because he even has like a line, he's like Hinata Shouyou and Kage Yamatobu.
em
33:31
He's like speed, he's like lists all these good qualities.
rainbow
33:34
And then he's like Hinata Shouyou Kage Yamatobu, and then it's like you know he's excited wants to play them and you know I think it's interesting because you know we see that Ushijima, like he's on a team that's so good they have to play colleges.
33:46
You know, like I'm sure for them the like qualifying tournaments in the prefecture are almost kind of boring where it's just like oh, it's just us kicking ass and kicking ass and then we go to nationals and we actually get to play some good teams. But I think for Ushijima, knowing that there are rivals out there, and it's different with Oikawa, because Oikawa he's like well, Oikawa should be on my team, like he recognizes Oikawa's skills. But I think with Kagehina he's like okay, I want to see what you're made of like, I want to see what you're capable of, and you and I want to talk a little bit in the spoiler zone about Ushijima and the way that Kagehina affects him okay, and it's something I want to talk about throughout, especially when we get to season three, but I want to talk about it throughout so they're walking away and kageyama is like, well, we couldn't beat Seijoh and Hinata's like it doesn't matter, we have to be both of them.
em
34:35
And kageyama's like you get it. So they are more revved up than ever. Which then brings us to and also I think it's funny. So now we're back at the gym and the team is together for a meeting and it's like have they been searching for kagehima? Like how long have they been gone? They've been gone for at least an hour.
rainbow
34:53
Where's, where's the little like moment of Daichi yelling at them and like where the hell have you been seriously?
em
34:59
where have you been? Yeah, exactly, but we don't have time for that because we have to get to the dramatic realization that before the training camp they have exams and if they don't pass their exams then the supplementary classes are next weekend and if they fail they'll have to go to those classes and they won't be able to go to tokyo. And who is the most affected by this? Tanaka, Noya and kagehina are our foursome idiots and they're all very shook because they are terrible at school and will probably not pass.
rainbow
35:29
And it's clear they forgot final exams were even coming up. They like didn't even think about it. They're like, oh, oh yeah, oh fuck, it's so great. Like I don't even want to know what their grades are.
em
35:40
Their grades are probably so bad we get a flash of them when he's looking at that. They're bad. They're really bad. Kageyama's are really bad. They're like 20s.
rainbow
35:48
Kageyama is drawing like volleyballs in his notebooks. There's no way. I do wish we got a little bit more of like what they were like in class, because I'm sure it's just Hinata. Like he probably gets in trouble for talking to people all the time. He's probably passing notes, he's you know he's drawing absentmindedly in his notebook and he scratches out because he realizes he drew kageyama's angry face and nobody can see that.
36:11
and I just want to say I love sports anime because the biggest conflict is whether or not they're going to pass their final exams and get to go to the training camp. Like I love it so much, like so many shonen anime, where it's like a battle anime and they're fighting and the stakes are so high and like people might die and sometimes people do die. It's so terrible. But then you get a sports anime and it's just like okay, even blue lock, a little bit, is like there is, it has this intensity to it. That's a little bit like this is, these stakes are really high and like it's fun to watch and it's it's really cool. But I just love with Haikyuu it's. I think it's what makes it such a good comfort show. Yes, because it is like it's it's intense and it's amazing and it gets your adrenaline pumping, but like it's safe, you know yeah, it's just like are we gonna make it to nationals?
em
36:55
no one's gonna die except for Daichi anyway. All right, so that's our. That's our first episode into season two. Baby, it's my favorite season. I think it's a lot of people's favorite season, so we're very excited.
rainbow
37:07
I really love season two. There's a lot of moments from season one that I enjoy, but season two I think especially this first half it's like I can watch every single episode and I'm so pped about it and I'm really excited for who we're going to get to meet we, for who we're gonna get to meet.
em
37:22
We're gonna meet a lot of new people this season, so yeah, buckle in. Now for the world's favorite game. It's who in Haikyuu. This week's scenario is something that I came up with. If our boys were in an American high school, what clique would they belong to? So think Mean Girls, high School Musical, and we had a little note. For those of you who don't live in America, the cl clicks aren't quite like what you see in the movies.
rainbow
37:49
It's much more like amped up and dramatic for the movie's sake, but it is still like roughly absolutely a thing. Yeah, I think there's a lot more fluidity than we get presented in a lot of the movies that are shown in, like the tv shows, but I think it's very natural for han beings, and especially for teenagers, who are in a stage of life where they're trying to figure out who they are. You tend to group up based on like having similar interests or having similar activities that you do.
em
38:09
Or like, even like, looking similar, like you'll kind of notice. So I'm interested because we have plenty of international listeners. So what was your like, click Like, what is it like in your country? What are the clicks? What kind of like broke it down? I'm just curious to see how similar things are across cultures.
rainbow
38:25
Yeah, please write in. Or even like people who are in the United States as well, like, what was your experience in middle school and high school with like cliques or with groups, like friend groups? Was it clear, like, who belonged to like what group? Was there a hierarchy? What clique were you in? H, you know, I was kind of a floater.
em
38:45
Yeah, I hierarchy what clique were you in?
rainbow
38:45
h, you know I was kind of a floater. Yeah, I could see that for you. Yeah, so, like I didn't, really I was kind of I knew a lot of different people. I think eighth grade really ss it up the best, because in eighth grade, for our academic classes, we were on what was called teams and so there was like three different teams where you all shared the same teachers. So you had your four academic classes, which were history, math or social studies, math, science and English, and so for my group we had math in the morning, and every single person that was in my math group we had the rest of our academic classes together. And it really showed how things split up when we would have a substitute and we would just have to do like a worksheet, which was super easy. It was all like the smart kids, we were all the honors kids, but we had one group that, like they were pretty diligent workers and they would actually do the work, and so I would start off with them and we would all work together and we would get our worksheet done super quickly and then I would go over to another group of friends because I kind of was like friends with everybody your Hinata
39:41
yeah, I was the hin and so I went over to like there was like a group of boys that I hung out with because I was one of those girls. We would all talk and they would copy my answers from my worksheet that I'd work on and then I'd go over and I'd talk to another group of friends and we'd, all you know, I'd help them out with their worksheets and I would like just go to two years older than me and I hung out with them a lot. But then I would just hang out with like I usually had like a buddy in one of my classes you know.
40:09
So opposites yeah, and then you know, when I, when I started smoking weed, it was like me and like my little stoner friends, and then senior year I did the, the musical, so I hung out with, , like the theater kids a little bit, yeah, but and we didn't really have like it wasn't like a hierarchy where, like, the jocks and the cheerleaders are at at the top or anything but, we did have like the popular kids that went to parties and stuff, and then we had like the band kids who were very horny at my school there was like mean popular kids and the nice popular kids like popular kids who like the teachers liked them and they were nice to you but they were popular.
em
40:45
And then there were like kind of the bad kids that did the partying and bullying and they were cool and hot yeah, and we had in our school.
rainbow
40:52
We had the IB program which is like even a step higher than AP and it's kind of bullshit. It's all bullshit, but like. So those were those like and they weren't necessarily popular but they were like the kids that all the like teachers liked and they worked really hard and some and some of those students were also partiers. Like there was just a lot more intermixing. Like there was no like stick to the status quo. Like you could play basketball and you could be a baker.
em
41:14
Yeah, I think that there, for my experience, I was like I think there were a lot of floaters like that, like yeah, it's not so, like it's not like a movie where it's that strict. But there were absolutely groups and for me I feel like I was even lower than like the nerds, like I think I was like a nobody kind of girl because I really I stuck under the radar. I didn't. I never had a big group of friends. I always had a very small but tight-knit group of girls. Like I had my best friend and then my second best friend and then my third like it was always about three to five girls always.
41:42
I didn't have a guy friend until like 10th grade and it was just us. And so I really and I like didn't want to be bothered, so I really tried to stay under the radar. I would say I was most closely associated with like the nerds. You know I wasn't friends with the nerdiest of the nerdies, but I had some nerdies. And then, like you know, I was a shitty teenager and I'd be like embarrassed of my nerdy friends, but those are who I got along with the best because I'm a fucking nerd.
42:04
And then, like, as the years went on and I started to smoke weed, I had a few like stoner friends, but they were more like my friends would be friends with them. So it was kind of like my outer circle where some of the cooler like stoner kids but I wasn't really like close with them. So I was very much just like doing my own thing, me and my best friend. We wouldn't go to the cafeteria for lunch, we would sit in the hallways and hang out with the weird kids. I think like the kids could smell the gay on me, but they didn't know exactly. But they all they knew is that they didn't want to be associated with me and I was always like I was.
rainbow
42:35
Always I thought of myself as like the weird girl and I thought I was very invisible and under the radar and I realized that wasn't true, like back when myspace was a thing, because that's another thing. We also went to school in like the mid to late 2000s and like the very early 2010 or early 20 teens, . So, and if you are older and you went to school in like the 80s or the 90s, we're very curious about how things were like for you. And if you're, if you're even younger- I'm so glad we're not in high school now oh my gosh.
43:03
Yeah, if you like just got out of high school, like let us know what things were like for you. Because I think of 21 jump Street, the movie where Channing Tat tries to like use gay as a slur and then everyone's like, dude, what the?
em
43:17
no, yeah, it's okay to be gay we went to high school before canceling was a thing. We went to high school when MySpace and Facebook were the biggest social media things.
rainbow
43:24
Yeah like Twitter was just becoming a thing when, I was in high school and like.
43:28
But I remember like I didn't have a MySpace because my parents were a little weird about us having social media I think because of my brother. That's a totally different story but I didn't have a MySpace but I guess people talked about me on MySpace because I was also like I was kind of like an emo goth kid, like that was like my style and then sometimes I could be a little preppy. I actually had a teacher in eighth grade said you know, I never know what you're going to like, what you're gonna look like the next day, like you could be like super goth, you could be prep, you could be wearing sweatpants and a t-shirt, like I never know, and that's kind of how my style has been to this day.
em
43:58
You're an Aquarius yeah, you were acting like one you also were. I think the biggest difference between you and me is you were a big participator. I think you did things at school.
rainbow
44:06
Yeah, not as much as my brother, I would say Like I wasn't super like peppy or anything, but like I did, you know, I would join, like I did like the creative writing club and I did, you know, I played rec volleyball, you know, which wasn't tied to my school necessarily, but like there were still people who went to my school who did that and so I was friendly with them. And, like you know, Emma has really opened my eyes to my like chameleon abilities and like I really can kind of fit in. That's kind of how my brother was too, Because my brother he played soccer, but he wasn't in one in like the soccer clique, he wasn't like a jock, he was like able to like move through different groups of people. And I realized, you know, I always thought I was invisible. I read too many like YA novels about goth girls that nobody noticed and so I thought nobody noticed me and then, like I realized there were people who knew my name and I was like I don't know who you are.
em
44:52
Yeah, because you were special. Were you in the gay straight alliance? Because I sure was.
rainbow
44:57
I went to school in South Carolina. We didn't have that. Oh my god, my New York privilege is showing yeah, it really is. No, we did not have lesbian was absolutely something you said to ruin somebody's reputation which was true for our school as well.
em
45:10
Like in the 2000s, it still wasn't really cool to be gay. it wasn't until my sister started school in 2010s where, like, it was getting eased up. But I yeah, that's true, I'm so used to growing up in a blue state that really make that, really makes me sad that you didn't have that. And there are so many states that don't have that kind of stuff, but we did. We had a gay-straight alliance and it was full of straight allies, yeah Well yeah, quote, unquote, yeah, quote unquote straight allies Enthusiastic straight allies and.
rainbow
45:36
I heard recently. This is we're really going off here. We haven't even gotten into the who and IQ q scenario, but it's fine. but you know, that's one thing. With a gay straight alliance like that, can you know? I think there are some people who are like, oh no, it should just be a gay club and it's like. But actually, if you make it like open to anyone, regardless of sexuality, people who maybe aren't even out to themselves or aren't comfortable being out to others, yes, that's a safe place for them to go and to find that community, but you know, they don't have to put themselves at risk, exactly, yeah, and we have very few openly gay students like, even like the theater department was not like filled with the gay kids or anything like.
46:11
It was still very, very straight-coded and my school, there was one gay kid who was out as bi and that was like the bravest thing yeah, that was pretty much what we had was we had like one bi kid and I remember some like biphobia for my friend who like, like she was a girl and like and this guy were kind of like talking but she felt like weird about it because like he'd only ever had sex with guys and she was like I don't know if I want to have sex with him and I was like I don't know why that's a big deal to you. I'm such a good gay ally.

I love gay people as straight woman. Yes, okay, sorry guys, we went on such a tangent, but hopefully you found that interesting, so let's get to the to the kids. So Hinata was you, I think he. I think he'd be very popular and obviously amongst the jocks, but he would be able to hang out with anybody and I think he has friends in every yeah, absolutely he's.
rainbow
46:56
He's not doing well in school, but the teachers still like him because of his bubbly personality.
em
47:00
Yes inadvertently or adversely. Kageyama would be like with the jocks, because he his whole personality is volleyball, but he would be also kind of a loner. I think he'd be obviously like me.
rainbow
47:11
Yeah, he would like sit with them at lunch, but he wouldn't be like talking to them, he wouldn't be like in on all of their jokes and stuff, he wouldn't be getting invited to parties or anything like and he would just be failing all of his classes or anything like, and he would just be failing all of his classes and his one friend would be the popular Hinata show you a03. Tsukishima is like a nerd.
em
47:28
He's, he's taking the ap classes yeah, I feel like he also is another one that, like it doesn't really attach to any groups. It's just him and yamaguchi.
rainbow
47:37
Yeah, they're just hanging out like he's like the nerds want him to be part of their click, but he's like absolutely not.
em
47:43
Not, you guys are losers, you're cringe, yeah, I think, like Yamaguchi has some like nerdy friends that Suki will hang around sometimes if he has to, but I really think his main friend is Yamaguchi.
rainbow
47:55
Yeah, absolutely yeah. Yamaguchi is like he'll play Pokemon with the kids at lunch or whatever, but like he's following Tsukishima around. Okay, moving on to the second years, let's. The NPCs are doing whatever. They're the young Republicans we did. Yeah, I'm fully leaning into terrible headcanons for NPCs. Which blanket statement. I don't. I'm not serious about any of these. I don't actually think the NPCs are bad. I just want to give them some sort of personality, and it's fun to make them terrible. So, yeah, they're the shitty young Republicans Hanukkah and Noya are the they are such like.
48:32
They're the hoodlums. They're the bad kids.
em
48:34
I would say that they're like just the goofy, obnoxious, like class clowns, like they're the one. They're the type of boys who love to jump and hit the top of the doorframe for no fucking reason. They piss the teachers off, they flirt with the girls, but they're like nice, they're not like bad kids.
rainbow
48:49
Yeah, I guess I don't mean like. I mean like they get in trouble a lot. I guess that's what I meant. I don't think there's really any bad kids.
em
48:55
They're not like setting fires in the bathroom.
rainbow
48:57
Not on purpose, a hilarious accident, yeah, they're. Yeah, they're definitely like they're not. They're not dealing drugs. Basically no, no, not absolute. No, no, they're not dealing drugs. The npcs are. They're both young republicans and the drug dealers . Daichi is a firm jock, I think Daichi is like captain of the football team homecoming king I think Suga is like a nice popular kid I see, I kind of see Suga as maybe like theater kid vibes or like band kid vibes.
49:30
Yeah, you know, kind of like you know he's popular and people like him, but like he's got a little bit of a weird side to him, like I see him as like one of, like the artsy people and also he would be an artsy one too, I think yeah, honestly, he's like a quiet and he's like the one where he's like the like.
49:46
Everyone like thinks he like all the girls think he's so hot and all the guys think he's so cool, but he's so quiet and mysterious but like really he's just like a he's a gay kid eating lunch in the art room. Yeah, absolutely, absolutely, and like looking longingly as Noya makes a mess over at like the clay pots and everyone would be shocked to know that he smokes weed with Noya after school.
em
50:08
Yeah, absolutely, oh my god, I have to. I literally have to go to ao3 right now you know I honestly, like a part of me, will always love a classic high school au.
rainbow
50:18
Yeah, no matter how old I get and then Kiyoko is like the, the pretty smart, popular girl that everyone like thinks is so beautiful and everyone wants to be them.
em
50:29
I don't think she's not a mean girl in any way no I think like whoever the mean queen bee is like, has one-sided beef with Kiyoko because she wishes she was Kiyoko, yeah, and is secretly in love with her.
rainbow
50:40
Yeah, absolutely yeah, for sure. And so, moving on from karasuno, we also want to talk about Ushijima Iwaizumi and Oikawa, I feel like Ushijima would be like with the honors kids agreed the top performing kids.
em
50:52
So like the jocks and the smarties, but like that's who he's with. But also he only has one friend and it's Tendo yeah, absolutely yeah.
rainbow
50:58
He has one single friend.
em
51:00
And then Oikawa Oikawa is that mean queen bee who is challenging Kiyoko. That is who. Oikawa is the queen bee, miss mean throwing parties, having sex, drinking, creating the drama the talk of the town.
rainbow
51:13
Yeah, yeah, absolutely. And Iwaizumi is his jock best friend. Who? Everyone? Yeah, he. I think Iwaizumi and Daichi are best friends. Yeah, if Daichi is captain of the football and the basketball team and Awazi's captain of, like, the baseball team and like I don't know, maybe he's in lacrosse, yeah, you know, they're like, they're the, they're the sportsy guys and they're hanging out. And then Oikawa, and I think Oikawa and Suga are like fighting it out for the lead role in the the school play. Absolutely.
51:43
Okay, yeah, we love that Write in, let us know your thoughts as well. And again, we really want to know what, like the clique, experience was for you in high school, no matter where in the world or when you attended high school. We want to know.
em
51:55

at gmail dot com all right, and now we're going into the spoiler zone and it's no longer a pool. What is it?
em
52:34
it's the spoiler zone in the light of the twilight zone. And credit to gemerald. You can find him on twitter. He came into my dms and gave me this idea and I was like that's brilliant, I'm going to take it and give you credit. So this season the spoiler zone is going to be like the Twilight Zone. So the future, the manga, the time skip. You are entering the spoiler zone.
rainbow
52:56
Yes, and so I have a lot because of Ushijima, I think.
em
52:59
Yeah.
rainbow
53:00
You know. I mean we could talk about summer training camp is coming up, Tsukishima's arc is coming up, and but we're gonna get to that in just a few minutes. But I think with Ushijima there's some fun stuff and I want to talk about like the effect that Kakehina has on Ushijima and some of my headcanons around that. Like I imagine he goes back into that gym and has that practice match with the college students and it's just on fucking fire and like like I think Tendo specifically is like what's going on with you, Ushijima, and I have some ideas about like I just feel like Ushijima, like something is awoken in him by Kagehina and I'm gonna make it gay and I think Ushijima like didn't really think a lot about like his like romantic or sexual feelings at all and then like there's something about Kagehina that unlocks that and then him and Tendo make out anyway and he realizes he actually has a crush on Oikawa yeah.
53:45
And then he realizes like, oh, I'm crushing on Oikawa, but like I'm in love with Tendo anyway, can you tell who we ship ? And then the other thing I want to talk about is Ushijima says to Kageyama, what good is a setter who won't devote himself to his team's ace? But then they go on to play together in the time skip. They play in the Rio Olympics together and they play on the Adlers together.
54:08
And I just wish we knew a little bit more about, you know, has Ushijima's feelings about Kageyama. I mean, obviously they've changed. They work so well together and like Kageyama does not become the kind of setter who will devote himself to his eight, to an ace, ace. And I think, maybe I think Ushijima's arc in this and what Hinata specifically Hinata, but also Kageyama and Karasuno teach him is that there are different kinds of strength and it's not just about brute force. And for Ushijima, we'll talk about this a lot more in season three. But for Ushijima, I feel like he's just been fed this idea by his own experiences and by the people around him that like you're strong, you're strong, you're strong, you're going to beat everybody because of your strength.
54:48
And he thinks there's only one kind of strength and there's only one kind of playing, one way of playing volleyball, and I think you know Kagehina really opened that up for him and I'm sure he enjoys playing with Kageyama.
em
54:59
Please. I wish we could have a whole manga just about the time skip and how things came to be, because of course you know they're in high school, so Ushijima and kageyama have a lot more growing to do. So obviously things are much different once they're adults and I think that they're just such an interesting friendship because again they both have they can match each other's freak with the autism. They're both just very like. Blunt and even Hinata will point out that similarity in season three and I just think that they're a fun pairing, especially in that time skip moment where Hinata sends the selfie and Kageyama grabs Oikawa or grabs Ushijima and just shows him and they both look at their ex-lovers together. Yeah seriously.
rainbow
55:36
Well, and I think there's something to be said. I think Kageyama kind of maybe had his own little elitism, you know, at the beginning, like at the end of middle school, you know, he was like you know, Hinata, what have you been doing for the last three years and not realizing that Hinata didn't have the same advantages of him? And I think season one really taught Kageyama that lesson. But Ushijima still has to learn that and I think he's going to be a better player for it. I think, at the end of the day, that's the great thing about these rivalries and about these monsters is that they challenge each other and even when they beat each other, they're still making them better players. You know that loss helps them grow. Yeah, all right, I think that's a good place to end it. I think that's fantastic, I'm. I think this might be longer than some of our other episodes because we went on so long about high school clicks, which I'm not mad about yeah, all right, guys, we're in it, season two.
em
56:23
We'll see you next week for season two, episode two, and until then, fly high Woo.
