hello are we ready? Can you actually can we start episodes from now on? It's season two, new season. Hello, you want me to do that?

em

00:18

yeah, instead.

rainbow

00:18

Of our hi, I'm rainbow and I'm Em Hi.

em

00:22

Oh, hello, hey guys. Hey, welcome to Fly A High Q podcast.

rainbow

00:32

Okay, I'm sorry.

em

00:33

No, that's okay. That's like that could be a fun blooper thing. You should put that at like the end of the episode. Okay, hello everyone, and welcome to Fly A Queer High Q podcast. I'm Rainbow, they she and I'm Em. And today we are finally getting to talk about the one and only Yachi Spoiler. Who is Yachi, we'll find out in season two, episode two Direct Sunlight.

rainbow

00:58

Oh my god, this is such I love this episode so much I for the first time, when I opened Crunchyroll, I noticed that it was described as a slice of life sports anime. I never thought about it that way. I feel like it is just a sports anime. It's very focused on the sports but ironically enough, this little like arc that we're going into is the most slice of life-y that the show really gets.

em

01:18

Yeah, I think there's. Even we've. It's been talked about ad nause in the fandom that Furudate was worried people wouldn't be interested if they wrote about their, their personal lives more and like, showed them more at home and showed them more in school and it's like Furudate. You are seriously underestimating the amount of content we want about these stupid gay boys I'm that tiktok audio.

rainbow

01:38

That's like Furudate write slice of life.

em

01:41

Haikyuu boys and my life is yours like honestly, I would I mean if, if they came out with it now, I would absolutely read that just give us little intercessions of, like, what they were doing. You know, and and I do I do kind of appreciate when a show is about teenagers and you just don't see the parents whatsoever, like there is something fun about that, where it's like Tanaka, do you have parents? Is your sister your legal guardian?

rainbow

02:07

yeah, it's very, it's an interesting choice. We have our boys with us today, our little Kagehina plushies yes, they're out in the living room because on Thursday we. We had every intention. Thursdays are our twilight out of focus. Watch days of the new BL. I don't I think we've mentioned it on here. I think we have Fun little BL. Please check it out. It is currently airing. And then we got sidetracked because the Japan versus Argentina volleyball game was up and obviously we had to watch it.

em

02:36

Yeah, it was a really good game too. I really liked it.

rainbow

02:40

Obviously, I am brain rot, so I was like this would work really well in the manga, like the drama of the game, cause like Japan really took the first set and then Argentina looked like they were going to get the second set and then lost it. Yeah, they went to like four sets. It was really good.

em

02:54

Yeah yeah, it was really good. Lots of really good plays. I really enjoyed it. It was very interesting. I love getting to see real sports.

rainbow

03:01

It is so funny.

em

03:07

We never have sports on our television, except for this time of the year. Yes, yeah, except for when there's ball. Occasionally I'll watch some, some soccer or football for our international. Yeah, we had football on this morning. Yeah, yeah, I watched. Uh, usa versus japan, usa women's national team. Yeah, I don't, sir. You will sir, yeah, I don't even. Yeah, it's not a nationalist thing for me, I just love women's sports and I love that our women's team is fucking dominating.

rainbow

03:32

Oh, I also. I saw that it was the pink-haired one that got the score.

em

03:36

Yeah, yeah, yeah, it was Rodman.

rainbow

03:38

Yes, trinity Rod something.

em

03:42

Yeah, trinity Rodman, okay, uh, rod something. Yeah, trinity rodman, she's really good. Yeah, I really like her. Her swanson smith they're fucking incredible. I've had a crush on megan rapinoe for years.

rainbow

03:51

, she was in the stands, that was our fun, that was our thursday, and so the boys have been out since then, because when we watch volleyball, they come out with us we used to have them, just like, hanging above our bed, like, along with other decorations that have since had to come down, ever since we got Kiki, who loves to play with them in the night.

em

04:08

Yeah, in the middle of the night we'll fall off of the headboard onto our faces trying to play with them. So now this might be their new spot. Yeah, we'll see how long it lasts. She likes to go up there too, so. So, moving on to housekeeping, we have a shout out for one of our listeners, eli from Twitter. They are so much fun.

rainbow

04:30

I think you kind of knew them before let me tell you one thing, and one thing only. I never remember my origin story with any moot, but I do like I have had interactions with Eli on the timeline. That have been fun. I don't remember when it started, but they're my friend now.

em

04:44

Yes, eli is wonderful. Eli discovered our podcast and was just singing our praises, which we love to hear, which so many of you do. We really appreciate you, and I think they specifically asked for a shout out on this episode. Okay, either that or they wanted a shout out. No, I think it was specifically this episode. Well, it's a good episode. It's a good episode. It's a great episode. I love it.so, shout out to eli. We love you. Thank you for listening. Are we ready to move on to our recap.

rainbow

05:10

Let's get into this gay episode. So will you count me down three?

em

05:15

two one exams are upon us. Can karasuno's four idiots score high enough to pass and go to tokyo? The second years get together to study and meet hot college student Tanaka, saeko, Hinata and Kageyama beg Tsukishima for help with mixed results. While the boys work on improving their grades, Kiyoko plans ahead by searching for a first year to take over for her when she's gone. Enter dyed-in-the-wool lesbian Yachi Hikota, who is so entranced by Kiyoko's beauty she'll follow wherever she goes. Luckily for kagehina, on top of being super gay, Yachi is super smart and agrees to help them study. As the team gears up for a practice match, Yachi must decide if she wants to join the team officially just on top of your game with this one, I had to do my girl justice.

05:56

You know, also died in the wool, lesbian. Yeah, that's like a thing like died in the wool. I don't know if it's died in the wool or died in the womb, but never heard that turn of phrase before, do you?

rainbow

06:06

did you mean like died, as in?

em

06:07

like I'm looking it up right now. Oh, it is died.

rainbow

06:10

Spelled differently okay, yeah, because it sounds like it's just like that's how she's made thorough, yeah, thoroughgoing, uncompromising uncompromising lesbian Yachi Hitoka yeah fucking absolutely.

em

06:22

I fucking love Yachi.

rainbow

06:23

We're gonna get into it because we do meet her a little bit later, a little bit later on, and I have so many things to say and we will get there.

em

06:29

Yeah, let's go through it. First and foremost, which is picking up right where we left off with those exams and Takeda being like you guys think you can do this right, and everyone is concerned. This is peak fucking comedy, this cold open.

rainbow

06:45

That's what I was gonna say. This episode is very slice of life and comedy Heavy on the comedy. For this one there's really there's virtually no volleyball just talks of it, because the focus is all about them kind of getting ready for their exams. So it's just like we really get to have the closest to just like what Furudate wanted to give us. With the slice of life stuff, we get to know our characters, I feel like a little bit more. And yeah, we really are introduced to the concept of the four idiots which is Tanaka, Noya and our Kagehina. Tanaka and Noya try to run away and Daichi's like there's nowhere to run to and then he sticks Enoshita on them, which I love. I love that Hinata is like what counts as a. I only get single digit quiz scores, which is crazy. And then Kageyama has stopped breathing altogether.

em

07:25

Fuck it. Ok, this is another like season two, for the dub is really like a lot of people's therapy. This gets into a lot of compilations because Yamaguchi is like you guys. I think Kageyama is dead because he does look like his soul has left his body. You know, it's his greatest fear I'm not going to be able to play volleyball, and but instead of having to overcome, like personal issues or communication issues, like he has to study and I don't think he ever thought that would happen to- him.

rainbow

07:54

He's like I just played the volleyball. What do you mean? I have to get through high school yeah, what do you mean?

em

07:58

what is this doing for me? Yeah, and I love he, he not just so me in math, where I'm like calculating how low can I possibly score on the test and still pass this class, which I somehow managed to do every fucking year.

rainbow

08:11

Yeah, well, that's the whole. Don't leave a kid behind program.

em

08:15

Which was a mistake, because I still fucking do not understand most concepts I learned in math and I haven't had to use them.

rainbow

08:21

Yeah, Hinata is flipping out. He wants to try and convince the vice principal otherwise. And Tsukki in the background is like what, if you just studied, what a concept would that?

em

08:30

be. I love it. I love this scene of him like freaking out and Tokyo is like crbling behind him, like his dreams are crbling. And then he goes to Ukai because you know, Ukai is the coach and he's like you'll help me, right, coach? And you guys like do I look like the kind of guy who got good grades?

rainbow

08:45

he was like Hinata. I didn't want to bring this up, but do I look like? I got good grades? And I'll have more to say to this in the spoiler zone, because I just love how Ukai is really the central adult figure in Hinata's life, like he is, who he goes to for like all around, not just volleyball but school and stuff like that, which I think is really cute.

em

09:03

I think it's so cute. I love Hina to trying to like shake Kageyama back to life. Yes.

rainbow

09:08

Kagehina are in rare form this episode. They're like for the first time really on the same side.

em

09:13

I mean they're on the same team, but like they have to really work together because they're both stupid well, I think this is a continuation of kind of what we talked about with, you know, season or episode 25 of season one, where, like we kind of see like their bond has kind of cemented in a way that it hadn't been, yes,and so I think this is the result of it and I can't wait to talk about that in a little bit because it's so funny. So that's the cold open, the most hilarious cold open in haikyuu history. And then we get the opening, and then we get Daichi just standing in front. They're all sitting, seiza in front of him, the four idiots, and he is the line in the dub. Is he's like okay, you have to follow some rules. One never fall asleep in class. And Asahi in the background is like they have to be told that.

rainbow

09:54

Yeah, half the team is like they're that stupid, like they didn't know.

em

09:58

Well, even like Yamaguchi says it a little bit later. He's like I understand Hinata, but like I kind of thought Kageyama might be a little smart and it's like oh honey, you did not see his character sheet no that boy, and I think Tsukishima says and I don't know if he means it about Kageyama or Hinata, I think he means both where it's like, yeah, his head is just like a volleyball, it's empty, oh yeah that's funny.

rainbow

10:18

Before we get too much further in this moment, I think, when Daichi is kind of laying down the law,and they're all like in despair, suki is going, ah, the sounds of anguish. Which, okay, villain era, we actually have a new rival for Oikawa and Kenma it's Kishima.

em

10:34

Tsukishima in this episode is so fucking funny. I love him.

rainbow

10:38

I love how he is really reveling in their despair  yeah, because Tsukki still doesn't care, it's just a club, so he's just, he doesn't really care if they make it to Tokyo. Meanwhile, you know, Daichi knows, because these are their four idiots, but the four of some of their strongest players, I think he even says it. He's like we need you, yes, yeah. And Tanaka's like I don't know if to be offended or not, because he's like well, there's no way we can go without our idiots yes, Tsukishima and Yamaguchi are leaving.

em

11:04

Also, Tsukishima is not worried because he's smart. He's like well, I'm gonna pass and I'm gonna get to go to tokyo. I don't really care if you guys get to go exactly. And so, and you can see it in Hinata, like he's, he has like fallen over backwards and he sees and you can see the idea for him. He's like hey, Tsukishima's smart. And then the moment he's like hey, Kageyama, and he like whispers in his ear and they're so cute and they're little best friends.

rainbow

11:25

Yeah, it's, this is just the way that he pulls it and, like Kageyama, leans down Like they're just yeah, they really are their most like friend era. Yes, and this is also the calm before the storm.

em

11:37

Yeah, they're very in sync in this episode.

rainbow

11:40

But yeah, he. So Hinata has an idea and Kageyama hates it immediately. And then I love Hinata is like what are you gonna argue about? Like you told Ushiwaka that you'd be the best setter. Like we have to go to Tokyo, we have to find a way to study he's pushing him so hard.

em

11:53

I love the way he's like. He's like getting into his space, like Kageyama's like leaning back, like Hinata's being so intense with him, like he's pushing him the way that Hinata is the only one who does that to.

rainbow

12:02

Kageyama Hinata and listen in the least sexual way possible. Hinata is the dominant one in this friendship and this episode is very, but this episode really represents that idea. Yeah, absolutely, we'll talk about it a little bit later too.

em

12:15

Yeah, because it's Hinata going up to Tsukishima and saying like hey, like Tsukishima, will you help us? Blah, blah, blah. And Tsukishima's like why would I do that? Like I don't want to. And then he's such a bitch, I love him so much. He's like he finds an opportunity to get to on Kageyama and he's like you're not gonna have the shorty.

rainbow

12:33

Uh, do all the begging for you. Are you king? Yeah, not, because I'm gonna let Kageyama get over with just standing there quietly.

em

12:37

No, and so he like, and you know, and then Kageyama says, it all quiet, and he's's like what's that? I can't hear you. And it's like I will actually punch you in the face, Tsukishima. Just kiss him. Ok, it's what he wants. And then we go to like the next day and Hinata's being Kiyoko's little helper, which is so sweet. This moment is very sweet. And she's so smart because she was like she's like OK, you're the only first year with any social skills.

13:02

Honestly, yeah so yeah, I think it just makes sense, like I think it makes sense for him to be the one to like go around and like find this stuff, and he's just so eager to help and he wants to even help her. He's like let me know if I can help, and she's being so like Kiyoko's really like blooming in this season, I think, because you know, then she's like no focus on exams and then practice yeah, it's.

rainbow

13:23

I love this moment because Hinata is very like. I love how he is with Kiyoko. He is, like you know, intimidated by her, but he's very respectful. He's not like weird or creepy about it like some of the second years are. And then, yeah, I love that Kiyoko's like no, just focus on, you know, the practice and the studies we need our best decoy. There will be more examples of this, but Kiyoko is clearly so proud of her team and wants the best for them, which is why she's pursuing now finding a manager to take her place when she's gone.

em

13:50

Yeah, because she's looking for first years who haven't joined a club yet, and then we get into a little bit of a study montage where we're seeing, like the second year study, we're seeing Kagehina study, and before we get into any of that, I wanted to talk just a little bit about what I found out about Japanese curricul.

rainbow

14:06

It's Rainbow's Educational.

em

14:08

Corner. This is from the National Center on Education and the Economy, specifically about Japan. It says Currently Japan's primary school curricul is divided into three main categories Compulsory subjects, moral education and special activity, so the compulsory. And this is primary. So compulsory subjects japanese language, japanese literature, math, social studies, science, music, arts and handicrafts and physical education, which I love.

14:35

That music and art is mixed in there, like, I think, in the united states, those are really considered more extracurriculars yeah and then english is currently required in fifth and sixth grade, but it's taught through informal activities rather than as a graded subject, and I've actually heard that in japan, like they don't really get graded tests until after like third grade or something in general, because the focus is not on passing tests but on like actually learning the basics, and like they're not stressing that. I think it's very interesting. I went to school for education briefly, so I find all this stuff interesting. So that's the compulsory subjects and then the moral education intends to teach students to respect one another and the environment, respect the rules of society and to learn general self-control. So I think part of that is like they have to. Like you know, in Japanese schools they they take, they do cleaning duties, like they are taking out the trash, they're cleaning up after themselves, like that's very much baked in.

rainbow

15:30

We could have really used these courses. You said moral, what was it? It's moral education, moral education. I was like what? But that yeah, how to just be a fucking person.

em

15:39

Yeah, it's like it's so much more. It's like it's so much more. It's I I think I don't know if that comes from like the collectivism or like you know how much that's rooted in japanese history, but it kind of makes me think.

15:48

When we watched the boyfriend in the last episode, before they leave the house there's a whole montage of them all going through and cleaning it which you would not see in an american reality tv show yeah, and that was a common compliment of like oh, you do house chores well yeah, yeah, I think you know that's just really baked in and, like you know and I've just, I've noticed it in, you know, my years and years of watching anime that like, yeah, they like clean up after themselves, like there's this understanding that, like this is a shared space and we should all take care of it. That I think we could definitely use more in America. I remember being in middle school and people would not clean up after themselves and I'm like, what are you doing? They're like the janitors will do it and I'm like, oh, fuck yourself, that's elitism. So just a little bit more. So special activities is kind of the third tier, and that's activities and ceremonies that emphasize teamwork and cooperation, such as graduations, field trips or school concerts.

16:41

, computer programming was added as a compulsory subject in primary school in 2020.and then those compulsory subjects are continued in lower secondary school, which I think is like junior and high school, maybe just junior high. And then they add fine arts, foreign languages like English, french, german, and there's also a greater array of electives, and then 2012 is when computer programming was added to them. Okay, so lower secondary is probably junior high, because then upper secondary, which I think is high school. It continues on with all of that, but it also adds science, inquiry and social science. Japanese schools also provide food and nutrition education as part of their school lunch programs known as shokuki I don't think I pronounced that right, but all students eat a school provided lunch together in their classrooms, which they also prepare and serve. Students discuss, or teachers discuss, nutrition and healthy eating with students as part of preparation for the meal. Wow, which I would have loved to have the way. I did not know how to feed myself for a long time.

rainbow

17:44

No, there are posts that like show school lunches from around the world and the American one looks so sad in comparison, are we? It's like a cardboard slice of pizza we eat prison food basically, yup, yeah, like it is.

em

17:57

Listen, all of you out there just look up what the like usual American school lunch is. It is not great, yeah. So I thought that was very interesting because we see in like this, while they're studying, kind of going back to haiku, we see them like looking at proverbs, we see them like learning english and Kageyama in the dub he's like I don't need to learn no english.

18:19

Yeah, it's like, oh honey, and it's so interesting because it's like he wants to be a professional volleyball player, like he wants to be a professional volleyball player and he wants to be on the world stage. We know that by now and it's like you do realize you're gonna have to be able to communicate with people who speak different languages so yeah, I love this studying sequence.

rainbow

18:35

First we're at the club room with the first years and Hinata is db and not getting the like. He's just not trying. You can tell he's not reading the full question and I think it's hilarious that you know Tsukki is giving him a hard time and Kageyama obviously has to join in. But then Tsukki, quickly, is like what are you talking about?

em

18:50

you're worse off than he is yeah, and I think it just goes to show that, like the teacher is everything when it comes to learning, sometimes because Tsuyushima is not a good teacher for them, like he is not, they're not to learn anything from him.

rainbow

19:04

The only reason Tsukki has done this is because Yamaguchi said during that time when they were asking it's like oh, I guess it wouldn't hurt to do a few minutes before and after practice, and that is all Tsukishima will do for them. And then we have the second years studying at Tanaka's house, and we were so focused on how we're meeting Yachi and we were so focused on how we're meeting Yachi. We also meet Tanaka's older sister.

em

19:25

Saeko, I fucking love her. I said Saeko, my queen, the quintessential hot older sister.

rainbow

19:31

I definitely can see myself as a teen being like oh, your sister is really cool, I'd like to spend more time with her. Where did she get that leather jacket?

em

19:39

Yes, there's another great dub moment here before we meet Saeko, where, uh, you know, Tanaka opens the door with his foot and he goes snacky time. Oh my god. And that's just another like very Sokka coded moment as well. I need there to be an avatar, haikyuu crossover, so Sokka and Tanaka can become best friends brief introduction to Saeko.

rainbow

20:01

We will get more of her later. And then we have ken hina texting Hinata's home and studying, but obviously he can't pay any attention, so he's texting Kenma. He's like you have your inner high prelims coming up right. Gomba ray.

em

20:13

He's like yeah, you're gonna come here too, right, because he can't wait to see his friend again. I love them and I totally get why people ship them romantically. I could see it. He just yells a lot. This episode, oh, it's so's so cute, because Natsu comes in and like wants to play with him, and then you can hear their mom being like no, natsu, your brother has to study. She's so adorable. And then, yeah, Hinata's yelling and then Natsu's like Shoujo, shut up.

rainbow

20:35

So then Takeda overhears other teachers talking about how Noya and Tanaka are doing a lot better in class. They're trying.

em

20:42

And then, at the very end of the first part, before we go to our commercial break, Kiyoko shows up at the georgia the gym and is like excuse me, can I talk to you for a moment? And then everyone looks over and then who peeks?

rainbow

20:53

out behind her. From behind her, it's world famous lesbian Yachi. And you know what I just want to say? We have been talking about how gay this show is all through season one and it's almost disrespectful because Yachi is the gayest character in this show.

em

21:08

Actually make room for the actual canon gay, lesbian let me tell you about my journey with miss Yachi. In the first episode we see the opening and she's in there and I was like, wait, who's this girl? Uh-huh, I was like, oh no. I was like, oh god, is this gonna be like a love interest for Hinata or Kageyama or worse, some sort of weird love triangle? What's going to happen? And then you get to her very first scene where she's just being a pathetic gay mess over Kiyoko. I was instantly like, oh my God, she's just a lesbian.

rainbow

21:36

Okay, it's fine, she's just really gay Okay. Cool, cool, cool. Kiyoko is talking to Yachi about the position and Yachi is not listening at all.

em

21:44

She's just thinking about how hot and sexy Kiyoko's mole is and how everyone is staring at Kiyoko and, before she even knows what she's agreeing to, she's just like yeah, sure, yeah and then like Kiyoko's, like oh, thank you, and like grabs her hand and shakes it and then she walks away, she runs off, she runs off and Yachi is like staring at her hand. Yeah, oh, my god, it's, and it's like honey, trust me, I've been there. I also think the english va for Yachi does a really good job of portraying the lesbian yearning, just like the softness in her voice as she's like describing it, and just the like on.

rainbow

22:14

It's like oh man, I've been there I've been there, uh, so now back to them. Her meeting the boys. She is this trembling baby bunny, and the boys are all like dogs sniffing around her. Basically, the gays, aka kishima and Kageyama are like mildly curious at best the way it's like don't tell me you didn't do that on purpose.

em

22:34

Don't tell me you didn't show me the two gayest ones who are just like oh okay, cool, yeah, it's a girl, we have a manager. Meanwhile, bisexual yamaguchi is like oh, she's kind of cute and Hinata's all excited and the second years are being creeps.

rainbow

22:45

Tanaka and Noya are standing behind Suga, just like looking at her like a girl, because it's very clear in this episode that neither of these boys have ever talked to a girl before and Suga has to be like you're scaring her. And then Asahi is accidentally scary just because of who he is as a person. And Yachi is the first time I watched it. I I was not into the I'm a scared little girl bit. I thought it was getting a little like misogynistic or like that was. That's like a common trope, I feel like with girls in anime. They're either like overly sexualized or they're like oh, it's just like oh. But you get to know Yachi and I have since changed the opinion, but I was a little like apprehensive of that character trait at first.

em

23:23

No, I get that Well because little like apprehensive of that character trait at first. No, I get that well because it seems at first it seems like, oh, she's just like scared of, like boys, but it's like, no, she has like actually has like clinical anxiety, yes, and that became something that I could actually relate to pretty well yeah, absolutely, I will say.

23:36

Tanaka says like hey, beautiful, when he first sees her and I wanted to throw up, I was like don't do this. And then so yeah, so she, it's like a quick introduction and they're like, oh yeah, you're gonna be our new manager. And Kiyoko's like hang on, she hasn't decided yet, like she has to do her committee work, but she wanted to come by and meet you first because Kiyoko is so Kiyoko's, so good with Yachi and so good at like being a barrier and like watching over her and protecting her. I can't wait to talk more about the two of them. Kiyoko's a very good senpai.

rainbow

24:04

She's a karasuno's full of good senpai she really keeps an eye out for for Yachi's yeah absolutely.

em

24:10

And then when Yachi's like leaving, uh, the gym, she's like as freaked out as she is by meeting all of these boys. She is 10 times more freaked out that she was standing next to a hot girl for two minutes. The way she's like, oh my god, one of her admirers, who's also a girl, is going to stab me and Yachi just lives in this beautiful lesbian bubble.

rainbow

24:30

Yes, yeah, the fact that she was literally scared a fan was going to kill her. And then Ukai strolls up and because he has dyed hair and a piercing, she was like, oh my God, he's scary.

em

24:49

And that's probably a anxious lesbian. He's like I wasn't ready for a daughter.

rainbow

24:53

He absolutely was not fast forward to the next day. Kage hina need a little bit more study help and, as I was saying before, suki refuses. He's like, yeah, we can do it before and after club, but uh, my business hours are closed he's so funny, yeah.

em

25:05

And then they're walking away and Hinata's like Tsukishima, more like Tsukishima, oh my god, which I fucking love. Then yamaguchi, because he's a good friend and a good teammate, runs up to them and he's like hey, that new manager girl is in class five, so she's probably pretty smart. And this is where we get confirmation that classes four and five are college prep, so Yamaguchi and Tsukki are on the college prep track as well yes, and so they go to Yachi.

rainbow

25:28

And this is what I was meaning before about Hinata being the dominant one, because Kageyama, the way he absolutely follows one step behind, and also when they're entering the class, Yachi's classroom, he's behind Hinata and he's like looking around and I was like it's giving secret service au. I don't know. There's just something bodyguard about this whole thing.

em

25:45

Yeah, I loved, I just loved how yeah, it was Hinata like leading the way he even introduces Kageyama to Yachi, Like the way Hinata is front of house, for sure, he and like just like, it's just so like natural. I love that and they're like okay, they just stick together.

rainbow

26:01

I love them, and with both Tsukki and Yachi. He tells Kageyama ask her, like ask them. You know he does the asking, then he's like you ask too, and he's just like help us, please Like. It's just very like. I don't know I have to go to AO3 right now.

em

26:13

Oh, I fucking do, yeah. And then we have our anxious Queen Yachi.

rainbow

26:16

I was gonna say this is where I relate to Yachi's runaway anxiety. She doesn't remember their names and then she's like, if I can't remember names, I'm not gonna be able to get a job, and then I'm gonna be homeless.

em

26:27

Oh, I love this, yeah, and I kind of wondered. I was like is this whole episode supposed to be giving the viewers like study tips, because we're seeing a lot of different like this is how you should study for this. And Hina or yeah, Hina, to compliments Yachi on her notes because they're really well organized, which, like I fucking love. I love well organized notes and she's talking about like the color coding and she's giving all these little like tips and tricks and I'm like was this like, is this like a mandate from the studio? That's like listen, we got a lot of 14 year olds watching this. You should teach them how to study.

rainbow

26:58

Yeah, really, and I loved Hinata's like pitch to her for helping. He was like Tsukki usually usually helps us, but he's getting annoyed at how stupid we are.

em

27:05

and Kageyama's like I'm not scared of him and then he's just like well, it would still be nice to have someone who teaches nicely well, it's so interesting in the sub that it's and that makes more sense for Kageyama to be like I'm not scared of him, because in the dub he's like it's not that bad and I'm like, yes, it is. You find it? You, you definitely think it's worse than Hinata does. Yeah, because Hinata's like that mean db bully Tsukishima. And then Yachi's being so cute and she's like I can't say I'll be any better than that mean db bully Tsukishima and it's like don't worry about it. It's like Yachi could never.

27:34

You're a sweet little baby. He is an absolute bitch.

rainbow

27:37

Oh, we have ADHD Hinata confirmed. When Yachi's like do you like studying? And he's like no sitting still for so long, sucks.

em

27:44

Yeah, and he like he keeps talking about volleyball and stuff and Kageyama's being so cute, he just like keeps working diligently, he like makes a comment about Nekoma's Libero and how they're really talented, and then Hinata keeps talking and Kageyama's like Hinata, make sure you write this down Like they're so cute. They really do like watch out, take care of each other in different ways.

rainbow

28:02

For, yeah, I and I had a little like mini headcanon moment. Because, yeah, Hinata's excitedly talking about his team and then Yachi is like, well, are you a manager? Because you're short, basically. And Hinata jumps up and is like I'm short, but I can jump, and then the sun shines upon him and Yachi's like, oh, because it's the Hinata effect, and I feel like it almost reminds Kageyama as well, Like Hinata is special and like loves this and they have to pass their exams if they want to go to Tokyo. Because then Yachi is like, oh, are you a little giant? And Hinata is all shook, like, oh, you know him, but that's like a common phrase for Japanese.

28:39

What's your damage? She wants to be on this episode she really does.

em

28:44

Are you a lesbian?

rainbow

28:45

it's because you're a lesbian confirmed six-month-old lesbian kiki Kageyama so little giant is like a common phrase for japanese athletes who are going up against bigger foreigners or whatever and he's like, yeah, I'm gonna be the little giant. And then Kageyama's like little giant that's not gonna go to tokyo if you don't copy this down.

em

29:01

It's very they're just partners. Goodbye, I love them, yeah, and I want to talk for a minute about Yachi and Hinata as a ship, which, like, obviously we don't ship it because Yachi is a lesbian and I do see them. I just don't see anything romantic. I think they're really good friends. I think they're cute. I've definitely seen people shipping them in the haiku smit the podcast I was listening to about them they, they ship them, which it's like it's Actually this is why we made a gay podcast.

29:28

Yeah, this is why. Because it's like, listen, the streets can ship whoever they want, even if you're queer, and you ship them like whatever. But like in my view, and I think many people's view and I think from Furudate's view, sir, that's a lesbian. I have my note here Yachi and Hinata would be a cute ship if Yachi wasn't such an obvious lesbian and Hinata wasn't madly in love with Kageyama. Yeah, like, I just don't know how you can look at Kageyama and be like, yeah, Hinata is gonna crush on this girl. And I can't imagine how you can look at Yachi and be like, yeah, she likes boys. Yeah.

rainbow

29:58

Well, that's straight people for you. Yeah, Yachi really represents an introvert that just spent a lot of time with an extrovert Because after Hinata and Kageyama leave her, she was like I feel like I was just left out in the sun for too long.

em

30:09

Yes, oh, so cute and I love. I do have to say I love that Kageyama doesn't seem to have, like Hinata doesn't have that effect on Kageyama, even though Kageyama is clearly an introvert and like doesn't I don't know if it's their matching energy or what, but like he doesn't seem to be drained by Hinata the way Yachi is yes, I think their energy matches.

30:27

I think he is quietly affected, like in a warmth kind of way, but like no, it's not too much for him well, it's because they're you know, because they're paired together, you know their shadow and their light, you know, and like, I think, for Kageyama it's like, well, Hinata can shine and he can be the light and he can be the one who talks to everyone and introduces us, but I'll be here and I'll help keep him on track and I'll help guide him, and I just love them. I have to go to AO3 right now. Speaking of going to AO3 right now, I want more Kiyo Yachi fix, because I love the way Kiyoko interacts with Yachi.

rainbow

31:01

I've been on my Kiyo Yachi bullshit recently and I really need to write down these thread ideas that I've been having because, you're right, there's just obviously, as always, the Wooloo content gets a little pushed aside because there's just not enough of it and the quality is usually lacking.

em

31:15

But yeah, well, because we see Yachi at practice. She's there, it's still, I think, kind of a trial for her seeing how she feels. And Kiyoko's like oh you know, make sure you watch out for stray balls, you don't have to do too much, just observe. And then you know the guys are playing. And then a ball almost goes right in Yachi's face. Kinata gets it, and then Kiyoko comes right over to her and is like are you doing okay? And there's like a moment where, like, Yachi says something and Kiyoko just smiles at her and it's so clear that Kiyoko thinks that Yachi is like adorable, yes, and I just, I just want more, and we we're gonna talk in later seasons about interactions between the two of them that feel like straight up gay fan service and this is just another moment where Kiyoko, like, makes a comment about how they have some of the best offense in the prefecture.

rainbow

31:59

Kiyoko is low-key, proud of her team and it's cute. And then Tanaka and Noya are having the time of their lives, because usually Kiyoko is just kind of quietly watching. But now she has someone to talk to and I'm like, oh my God, she's moving her mouth and smiling. This is girl talk. And this is what I wrote down, like, oh, they've never spoken to a girl in their lives because they are way too easily impressed by these simple things.

em

32:17

Yeah, and they have like a big heart behind them and everything. And then Ukai is like stop being fucking idiots and get back to practice and not to sound like Tanaka and Noya, but like I am also so fucking glad that Kiyoko finally has another girl to talk to. My biggest complaint about season one is that she's so in the background and she's so quiet and like it's clear that she's not as comfortable talking to the guys or talking in front of the guys. I think it's. I think it's less about them being guys and more about like she doesn't feel as comfortable like talking to all of them at once. But with Yachi she can really talk one on one with her and like she's mentoring her and she's she really clearly takes that senpai role very seriously and, you know, clearly gets along with Yachi and thinks she's adorable and they're just. It's just. They're a great little team and I'm so glad Kiyoko has help. I'm glad she has somebody to talk to.

rainbow

33:10

I'm glad she has somebody to talk to. I'm so excited. Will any of these episodes pass the Bechdel test? No, because they're still talking about a boys volleyball team. But yeah, I guess. So that's a downer. Yeah, it's okay. The episode ends with Takada coming to practice to let them know a team has asked, insisted on practice matching with them.

em

33:21

Yeah, they were impressed by their how they did at the qualifiers.

rainbow

33:25

And even as, like when Yachi is watching them, you can see like they're really good, she's really good. You can see that at the very end Yachi is like her eyes are sparkling, like she's definitely very impressed by how good this team is.

em

33:36

What she says to Kiyoka. I've never seen volleyball this close up, like it's so powerful, and we see this a lot with Yachi, where she is constantly talking about like I would my arm would fall off if I tried to get that ball she's like these boys are going to kill me, these gays they're trying to murder me.

33:51

Yeah, she's convinced she's gonna die. That's the anxiety. And then it ends with her just like excited to see more like the look in her eyes at the end makes me feel like she's like. I want to see this practice match. I want to know what to happen and I'm really excited for the next episode.

rainbow

34:05

Well, and I think she says something that kind of sets up the next episode, which is, oh, amazing, nothing like me. And we're going to see Yachi grappling with the decision to become manager or not. But anyway, that's the end of this episode. A lovely gay chapel-roan, sabrina Carpenter, brat summer episode.

em

34:33

This one's for the girlies, of course. That brings us into our character spotlight. Who's going to be none other than Yachi hikota? We stan a legend. Is it hitoka, hikota? Oh, it's hikota. Yeah, h-i-k-o-t-a, nope, you're right.

rainbow

34:39

I'm wrong. I'm right. I'd love to be right. It's. You know why? Because it's similar to toga himiko from my hero academia uh, my hero, by the way, is everyone okay after that? My hero ending. Could be better I'm fine.

rainbow

34:49

anyway Yachi hitoka  I have a little bit of a quote from her personality for her personality, from the wiki quote she seems to underestimate her own importance and deems herself incapable, even though she has a lot of good qualities. She's quite clsy and gets nervous easily, but always takes care of others and tries to cheer them up if they're in a bad mood. Yep, she's a good girl, we love her. Her name, meaning her family name, is Yachi, which means marshland Okay. And then her given name, hitoka, means compassion flower, aw, which is very cute, okay. Hitoka means compassion flower, aw, which is very cute, okay. And then, moving on to her character sheet, Yachi Hitoka is in class 1-5, as we've said, she's a smarty. She's the volleyball club manager. She's 4'11" she's a little shorty Wow, yeah, she's a teeny little one. Her birthday is September 4th A.

rainbow

35:41

Virgo, how do you feel?.

em

35:56

Virgos have always been my best friends growing up. We would have been besties. Yes, do you feel like it's it fits? I think so. I think her, her neat notes and her anxiety and her little hairdo it's all giving Virgo to me.

rainbow

Hang on, I'm looking up her favorite food. Oh, is it not listed? No, it is listed, I just don't know what it is. So it's listed as Fugashi pastry sticks oh Dried wheat gluten snack.

rainbow

36:13

Okay, that's another Virgo thing to like.

em

36:16

Brown Sugar coating has a savory sweetness where the inner part is light and crisp. Interesting, I can't wait to go to japan and try so many different kinds of food. Uh, moving on to her current worry, what on earth will she do if she ever finds herself in a life-threatening situation?

rainbow

36:33

okay, so we've had adhd Hinata. Now we have that's, if you look up anxiety.

em

36:38

That's the definition, that's literally yeah, which also, like forachi, like just meeting the volleyball club, was a life-threatening situation. Also, her pose on this character sheet is her gripping her stomach in anxiety.

rainbow

36:51

Like she's so scared. And then we're going to talk about her ability parameters and I have a little bit of a bone to pick. Okay, her power and her technique are ones. Her speed jumping, jumping and stamina are twos. Her intelligence is only a four and that's bullshit and I don't know if it's like. I just feel like it should be a five. Like they say she's so smart and I don't know if maybe it's like the idea is like well, she doesn't know that much about volleyball yet, because when Hinata's talking to her, when they're studying and they're saying all these words, she's like I don't know what any of this means and like she has to learn that. But I was just like we live in a world of patriarchy and it just feels like giving the girl who, like in this particular episode, was like oh, she's so smart, she can help you study like give her a five well, yeah, I guess my biggest argent for it is that if it's supposed to be specifically related to volleyball, it's not.

em

37:40

It is for Kageyama only for Kageyama.

rainbow

37:43

Kageyama is the only one who has that. Note. Other characters have a five in intelligence, and it's not just applied to volleyball. This is olympic scoring all over again. Yeah, so I think she should have a five. I just like that's the kind of thing that I'm just like. Maybe it's not misogyny, but I would not be surprised if there's a little unconscious bias baked into that.

rainbow

38:01

I don't know, maybe it changes. We do get to see, you know, how they've improved in the time skip. So maybe it's up a level. But I just don't think it's fair to have a character who, like you're specifically saying, is so smart and she's in class five, she's in college prep, she's going to help our idiots, and then you're going to give her a four.

rainbow

38:17

Furudate, I am closing in on your location.

em

38:20

Yes, On the bright side. You gave us a lesbian, so I guess I can forgive you.

rainbow

38:25

He said woman can't be that smart. Okay, that's Yachi. We're excited to get to know you, baby, we'll see you and Big Sister Saeko later on. So now it's time for the world's favorite game. It's who in Haikyuu? This week's scenario was brought to us by Zale. What are their favorite sea creatures?

38:42

So, I read this and I immediately was then picturing them as sea creatures, so I might take that angle a little bit. Go right ahead, cool. And today we're talking about Yachi, of course, Hinata, saiko, Kageyama, Tsukishima, yamaguchi, Kiyoko, Tanaka, Noya, Ennoshita, Asahi, Daichi, Suga, Takeda, Ukai and Kenma. So can I? Just immediately I thought about Hinata as a little otter. That's all I want to say. No, I, I, yeah no, you're right.

em

39:11

You're right, that's really adorable. I love him like a little otter with little curly orange hair. I'm, I am obsessed with that Yachi. She strikes me as person like, the kind of person who, like her favorite sea creature, would be like a whale or something.

rainbow

39:25

Yeah.

em

39:26

But what do you? What kind of sea creature do you see?

rainbow

39:27

her as my mind is racing, I don't know what to land on. Do I make her a clam because she's shy? Do I make her a seahorse because that's just cute and she's a lesbian and the seahorse men have to carry the eggs, don't you know? I don't know what any of that has to do with each other, but I've made the connection. Kageyama is an eel, oh, absolutely.

em

39:47

He's Slytherin. Yeah, I don't know if he has a favorite sea creature, though Something weird, I'm sure Something ball-shaped. He likes pufferfish. Tsukishima's a pufferfish.

rainbow

40:06

Tsukishima is the spiky boy, his favorite. He likes the megalodon yeah. He likes the like ancient ones from dinosaur times yeah, yamaguchi is a little seal. Oh yeah, I see that just trying to think of the cute ones, yeah absolutely.

em

40:16

Tanaka is a shark and it is his favorite animal yes, for sure yeah he loves a great way.

rainbow

40:22

He's like a sword fish no a marlin, a marlin sure yeah he's a marlin Kiyoko is a beautiful dolphin you know, they're actually assholes.

em

40:35

 a killer, whale an orca.

rainbow

40:37

Yes, apex, apex, predator okay, she made the killer whale, but I do just want to say about dolphins they're like people. Some of them are very nice and some of them will assault you.

em

40:46

It's true. No, they're like jerks to sharks too.

rainbow

40:48

They like bully sharks. They're the mean girls of the ocean. I'm just saying.

em

40:52

I'm just saying we think dolphins are so cute, but they They'll get you, they're just like hans. Some of them can be assholes, but no, I love the idea. Kiyoko is definitely. She's that orca. That was like leading the leading that pod. That was like destroying all those yachts off the coast of spain, or whatever. Ennoshita is a hammerhead shark.

rainbow

41:12

Oh don't ask me why. Okay, I love that it's. This is all based on vibes.

em

41:16

This week also, I just want to say, going back to killer whales, also known as orcas, they have there's like no record of them killing hans in the wild. They've only ever killed their trainers when they've been in captivity. They like usually leave hans alone. They are. They can be curious about us. I recently saw a video where a guy was he was doing like some light diving and two orcas came up and just swam by him and were checking him out but like he was in no danger.

rainbow

41:41

That's so funny, this orca stuff. I saw a video of a woman who was like in a canoe or something and she was hyperventilating because there was a bunch of orcas surrounding her. And I was reading the comments and they were like they're usually just curious, they're probably protecting you because you're freaking the fuck out.

em

41:55

Yeah, like they. They down polar bears, they take down whales. Orcas say fuck around and find out. Yeah, like we think, like, like you know, people are like oh, if the dolphins ever evolved more, they would take over. No, it's the orcas. Like the, the ocean levels are rising and we have to look out for the orcas.

rainbow

42:23

But I think they'd be kind to us.

em

42:23

Yeah,  have we talked?

rainbow

42:24

about psycho, yet psycho. What is the sexiest fish there is? Oh my god, yeah, psycho. Is that sexy fish? From what the fuck?

em

42:27

is that movie? Oh my god, the movie with will smith short tail? Yes, yeah, the. The? Is that the j-lo fish? Or the? Is it angelina jolie? All those fish were like made to look like the. Yeah, people voicing them Asahi. Asahi is like, oh, he's a sea turtle, okay, just a gentle. I can agree with that. A gentle little guy. He's just hanging out, hanging out.

rainbow

42:52

Daichi is uh, she's like a salmon just going upstream living to be eaten by a bear? Yeah, Suga's an octopus. Yes, I want to kiss you. Wait, is this even a fish? What's that thing where it's like I don't even remember the reference.

em

43:11

It's like my sister had a baby I have no idea what you're talking about. Takata is. I'm running out of sea creatures I'm familiar with I don't know a lot of sea creatures starfish, is he what's?

rainbow

43:27

a very persistent fish okay, this is also from shark tail and I'm oh, it's a little shrimp. My sister had a baby and I took it over because she passed away anyway, I don't know who that would be. Like you, I'm obsessed with that.uh, maybe that's talking about I could see that Ukai is the shark from finding nemo bruce.

em

43:49

Yeah yeah, names bruce. Yeah, yeah, he gets a little sniff of blood and go or maybe he's one of the more like cigarette sharks that are next to him. Yeah, he's the one with, like, the hook coming out of his face or something. Yeah, well, I was gonna say I could see Ukai being a polar bear, because they're sea creatures, because they swim, oh yeah, yeah, I think they're considered part of like you can consider them.

rainbow

44:08

Yeah, I mean, that's how orcas are able to kill them.

em

44:10

Kenma is a clam. Yeah, Kenma is a little clam. Kenma is like a barnacle. oh my god, that's foul. He's just hanging. No, he's just hanging out. He's like, I don't want to. Maybe he's a starfish. Oh, no, he's definitely a starfish. No, you're right, he's just. Which starfish are cool. We I did a marine biology class in high school and I lived on the coast, so we went to the marshland and we went to a jetty and we got really lucky. There were tons of starfish and we were able to like look at them and they have little like suction cups that they use to stick to stuff and it looked so cool. You would bring them out of the water and they would like close up and then you'd put them back and they would open back up. It was really fascinating, nice. Thank you, zale. So yeah, we kind of turned that into what sea creature would they be, rather than what's their favorite sea creature but it was fun regardless.

44:57

everybody write in. Let us know what sea creature you think they would be or what their favorite sea creature would be.

rainbow

45:02

Yeah, actually the prompt that I was given and then ignored. You can find us on Twitter, instagram, tblr and Blue Sky. At flyhqpod, that's F-L-Y-H-Q-P-O-D. You can also send us an email, please do. At flyhqpod. At gmailcom, that's F-L-Y-H-Q-P-O-D. I, that's F-L-Y-H-Q-P-O-D. I also just want to while I'm in the social media section, this past week and this is weeks in the past, but I put up our first little promo vid and my plan is to try and do that with every episode as we go on, and they'll be coming up on Fridays and it'll just be like a 30 second clip just to kind of give a teaser and hopefully entice people to watch the episode. So, yeah, yeah, find us there. And now on to you are now entering the spoiler zone.

em

45:51

Yeah, so,what are the two things that you tried to talk about earlier in the episode? You know, one day I'm gonna write in this, one of these days you're gonna move your notes to the spoiler zone it's not gonna be today.

rainbow

46:03

It was early, fuck what was it? We talked about Ennoshita oh, yes, well, I think that was one that just kind of came up, that, this episode you can really see Ennoshita is being groomed to be the captain next year.

46:14

He really is like in charge of the second years and Daichi really relies on him oh yes, so the thing that I wanted to talk about specifically was going all the way back to the beginning of the episode, when Hinata turns to coach Ukai to help him with studying, and how I was saying like Ukai is such a central adult figure in his life. This also comes up again, like in season four, when he is doing the that little training camp and he calls his dad to be like, hey, what should I like eat, like, what should I do to like kind of get through this week, and I just I find it heartwarming, yeah well, even you know, I mean Ukai takes Hinata out to you know, grandpa Ukai later in the season so that he can learn about tempo.

em

46:54

And you know, like I think Ukai, I I think for Hinata, like he really looks up to him and it's really cute.

rainbow

47:00

I'm getting in my feels thinking about Ukai, like sending Hinata off after third year and telling him how proud he is sending him to brazil up. Yeah, just like maybe the graduation day or whatever, just like their goodbye.

em

47:11

Basically, I'll kill myself yeah, anyway, I have to go to ao3 right now in an emotional way this time, not a horny way.

47:18

Yes, usually that that term is a horniness implied, but not always no, and then I just wanted to talk a little bit about Yachi, which we were trying to talk about earlier, but she does not end up with any of these guys, like she doesn't, you know, because they kind of really set it up where, like it could be Hinata, it could be yamaguchi, because he like gets all blushy and thinks she's cute right but she just stays a lesbian.

47:40

She even like, reacts to Kiyoko the same way the guys do like yeah, and she really never gives any kind of like.

rainbow

47:47

She, I think is has adoration for Hinata, but it's not romantic it no, it's, it's and it's very much like she is.

Oh, it's like never. Like it's never necessarily like Hinata and Yachi just on their own. Like Kageyama is always a part of it, like she's really, like she is the number one Kageyama shipper.

I would say right, like there's just a lot of fun headcams to be had about her helping the boys come to terms with their homosexuality. Yeah, because she's just like a straight up lesbian and she's been new. Yeah, no, I I'm so glad because I think, especially in the context of this show, they absolutely could have forced. They do it all the time where they force straight ships just for the sake of them and it would have a hundred percent felt forced. So very happy that they didn't go that route.

Yeah, I'm excited to talk more about her. I'm excited to talk about her single, potentially lesbian, mother. We're finally getting more women, people.

I'm so excited to have women. Yeah, that's have women. Yeah, that's probably our. I think one of our main complaints about haikyuu is it's all boys, which you know. It's about a boys volleyball team, whatever, but it's nice to have some girls in the mix now.

Well, and again, you know, in season, back in season one, they do give us an episode that focuses on the girls team. You know, michimiya is there like? It's not entirely like it knows women exist  and it knows they exist as more than just a sex object.

And again, like even we were complaining about Tanaka and Noya being creepy, but like again we had a senpai or a coach at every turn being like, hey, don't be a creep. Like that's weird, like highlighting it. It feels very much like because, you know, from my understanding with japanese storytelling there are a lot of tropes involved and they do often follow these very similar patterns. But I feel like with haikyuu they're really they're like able to subvert them in fun ways.

Yes and I think that's fine.

I think it's just, you know, it's the evolution of storytelling and if anyone has any other information, if anyone knows more about that and like anything about the trends, like, I'd love to hear more about it. All right, we got to go, because Em's just playing with my toesies now.

Yeah, but you can. My attention span really peters out around the 50 minute mark, so we gotta go. We gotta leave the twilight zone. We'll see y'all next time and until then, fly high.
