00:07

hello everyone and welcome to fly a queer Haikyuu podcast. I'm rainbow they she.

em

00:15

and I'm em - that burp was my pronouns.

rainbow

00:18

Please leave that all right, and today we are talking about season two, episode three, town Person B, also known as Villager B, and we are very excited. But before we get on to that, we have a special listener. Shout out for our listener, elle. Thank you, elle. We've had a few email exchanges with you, always lovely. You requested a shout out on this particular episode, probably because of Yachi, and we're very happy to have you here with us spiritually, not physically. They're not in the room, they're in the corner. They're the spider we just had to take out because Kiki is on one today.

em

00:57

Yeah, she is. She had a spider friend and we, rainbow, respectfully brought it outside, because I don't do bugs in this household no, and it was.

rainbow

01:07

It was just gonna keep her attention, and now she might continue to be a little annoying, but we'll see how it goes. So you might hear some kitty meows in the background. I don't think we have anything else for housekeeping, nothing for chit chat.

em

01:18

I think we're diving right into it. This is a great episode. I finally have another Haikyuu lesson of the day with this episode. A lot, lot of great hits. So, yeah, we'll jump right into it. I'm doing the recap.

rainbow

01:27

Do you want me to count you down? I always do.

em

01:29

Alrighty, and the three two one Villager B can fight too. Yachi wonders if she has enough passion to be Karasuno's manager. Furudate subverts some tropes and M cries as this episode with banger lines and important life lessons takes us into our next arc. Though we still have to find out if our four idiots passed their exams Main character or extra, everyone has their part to play in this episode of Haikyuu. I feel very represented in this episode. I think a lot of people do Because not everyone can be Hinata, not everyone can have main character syndrome. Okay, some of us are just regular degular. Wow, I feel called out. , you should, we should all feel called out respectfully, because this is all about how the extras matter too.

rainbow

02:14

Yes, I think this is such an interesting episode and I don't know what happened that like made Furudate decide to write like such such an arc for especially like a female character. Like you had Kiyoko there the whole time in season one and you were just like, yeah, she's there and she's hot. And then you introduce and like you know, I'm not complaining, and I guess Michimiya had her arc as well, so I guess I can't really say that I do think it's interesting that I I like I don't think we would get as much from Kiyoko if we didn't have Yachi here. For sure, this episode is all about Yachi and we start off with some gay-ass Kiyoko Yachi content right off the bat.

em

02:50

Kiyoko is getting ready to leave and Yachi's kind of just standing outside because she's overhearing I don't know if this happens right before or right after she is overhearing Takeda telling Ukai about some troubles where he thought they would have the bus for Tokyo, but another club has it. Karasuno is poor. Only one bus, not Shiratorizawa, with a bunch of fancy buses and horses. Kiyoko comes out and she's like oh, just wait, I'll walk with you. I really do. Tanaka and Noya are also enjoying getting to see Kiyoko actually speak, but like so are we as the audience. I love how she is with Yachi Well she's just so much more comfortable with her.

rainbow

03:24

You know she's not as and I again I don't know how much it is that she's not comfortable with boys, I think it's more she's uncomfortable with large groups, and so talking to the whole team is hard, but just talking to Yachi one-on-one is easier. And it might be which maybe this is just projection, but it's the kind of thing where, like, she has to like take Yachi under her wing and like look out for her, so it's easier for her to like have more confidence. When doing that, like if it's just about her and speaking for herself it's harder, but because it's for Yachi, it's a little bit easier for her yeah, for sure.

em

03:53

I also wanted to note that sweet Takara was willing to dig into his own savings for the club and Ukai is like no, you have to save that for your wedding. Yeah.

rainbow

04:02

I think in the W's like for your, your future children, and it's like that's a gay man. He's going to be coaching volleyball for the rest of his life, which there is nothing wrong with that, yeah yeah. And the boys are trying to kind of entice Yachi to join Hinata, like seven times in this episode is like so you're going to join, right, Yachi?

em

04:19

Like he wants her to join so bad and his whole thing is because it'll make them look like a champion school if they have two managers, Like it's just cool to have more than one manager.

rainbow

04:29

Yeah, he's not thinking ahead like Kiyoko is, and he's like, well, if Yachi joins now, she'll be the manager for the rest of the time that we're here and that's going to be good.

em

04:36

He's like, no, we're going to look cool and then, meanwhile, tanaNoya have their own agenda and they're like you should join because Kiyoko talks around you, which let me tell you, as as the plain girl who didn't get a lot of attention from boys, this was triggering. When you're being used to get to the hot girl, oh, it's so annoying and I was so happy that Daichi hit them for that yeah, again.

rainbow

04:54

We just have once again. Tanaka and Noya are being db pervs and somebody from the show is like, hey, you're being idiots, don't act like this. Which which? Thank you, Furudate. Thank you so much.

em

05:05

Hinata pulls out his phone to show Kenma's text that Nekoma made it through round one and they'll be going on to round two and they're all hyped up and Yachi is just kind of watching this and I think she feels very, very outsidey with Karasuno. They're very much in their own intense world. And this brings us to Yachi's apartment in a very city-fied area. I don't know how far away she lives from Karasuno. I was getting all in my head about this.

rainbow

05:26

I need a map. I need a map of like. What is like. Where is the high school of Karasuno? Is it? Is there a certain town?

em

05:34

The school seems to be in like a country area.

rainbow

05:37

Yeah, but but I mean, even country areas can sometimes have like small, like more metropolitan centers for sure which is what we need a map , yeah, we definitely need a map.

05:45

I do want to say, before we get to Yachi's apartment, we do have Yachi being a super lesbian, because she's just like so she's reflecting on Kiyoko asking her to join and it's all sparkling. She's like oh, Kiyoko asked me to join, she, that's what she is excited about. She's not excited about the volleyball, but she's like but this pretty girl asked me to do this and that's why I'm still here to the point where Tanaka is like yeah, I can relate.

em

06:06

If Kiyoko said it come with me and I'll steal your money, I'd go with her. Which?

rainbow

06:09

honestly, Yachi would too. Yeah, and Yachi's mom is so cunty. I love her like I love her hair. I had canon her as a single lesbian mom.

em

06:19

I think she did in virtual fertilization.

em

yeah, like many characters, Yachi is fatherless. But then there's this little like kohai character who I really enjoy, just this guy who keeps showing up that they work together and I don't know, I like to imagine that she uses him for sex okay,

rainbow

yeah, I can see that that does take away my lesbian head canon, but I love that too.

rainbow

06:40

But he's so funny. He like recognizes that like hey, you're not being a great mom, maybe you could be nicer. She's being too much. It's kind of like reminding me of Amity's mom from the Owl House.

em

06:52

Yeah, so Yachi's mom has a very like tough love approach to things.

rainbow

07:01

Yachi tells her mom she's thinking about becoming the manager for the volleyball team and her mom in the dub at least says something like oh well, you don't want to be the laziest person on the team, like acting like Yachi's lazy, which she's clearly fucking not.

em

07:08

Yeah, well, it is kind of a little like accusatory. She's like well, if you join a team and don't have the passion for it, that's rude. Basically, she reminds me of my father a little bit because the kohai dude is like Yachi, so passive, because you're kind of mean or like cold way of parenting Yachi, and Yachi's mom says like I just want her to be strong and independent like me, but like sometimes that cold approach doesn't always work, if I could take like a feminism moment right here.

rainbow

07:33

Like Yachi's mom is clearly like a working woman, and you know, we know, japan also also has a patriarchal society where, you know, it has been harder for women to enter the workforce and be taken seriously. And it kind of reminds me of when women get into positions of power and then, instead of helping, instead of mentoring other women, they're like well, no, I'm gonna treat you the way I was treated because you have to toughen up. Ultimately that doesn't help anybody and obviously this is different because it's a mom and a daughter. But I I kind of see that happening here, where she's like well, I had to go through the world and I had to fight to get where I am and Yachi's going to have to do that too, and maybe not recognizing that there's different ways to fight and Yachi doesn't have to take the same path that her mom did yeah this is kind of a story.

08:14

It's not just about Yachi, but it's also about Yachi and her mom yeah.

em

08:18

So now we're back at the clubhouse and Kiyoko has some words for Yachi which I think are a lot more helpful, and I this is my Haikyuu lesson of the day haven't had one of these in a while, but I fucking love this whole tidbit so much because, you can see, Yachi is still like waffling over there and Kiyoko says to her I don't think everyone has to like something before giving it a try. I don't think you need an unwavering will or lofty motive just to get started. Sometimes things you start on a whim end up becoming important to you. To get started, I think you just need a little bit of curiosity.

rainbow

08:49

Yeah, she calls it wonder in the dub, which I think means the same thing, and I like both of those. I really like this moment. I maybe wish Kiyoko wasn't undressing during it. That felt a little fan servicey where I'm like why do we have this 18 year old getting into her bra to give this little speech? Sure, , but I do like that we get to see the girls club room and I don't know like maybe looks a little bit nicer than the boys club, I'm sure it's kept nicer.

em

09:14

This whole episode feels very subvert in so many different ways and this is just one of them where, like these shounen mangas are so much about passion and lofty motives I mean, look at Hinata, look at Kageyama and that's usually what shounen mangas and animes favor is that main character syndrome.

09:31

And I feel like Haikyuu is a very rare show where they give space for other people and for side characters and everyone has a part to play.

09:39

And I just really love that idea because I think, especially growing up in America as a millennial, where you were really like I'm going to go on a bit of a tangent here where you're like sold, oh, you have to have these big dreams that you follow and you do everything for these big dreams. And I remember growing up and being like, okay, I guess I'll pick a dream to have because you're supposed to have one and you're supposed to have these lofty motives and blah blah. But I really like this approach. Instead it's like you don't need to have this crazy goal, like not everyone has to be a Hinata and not everyone should be a Hinata, because nothing would get done and that would be exhausting. I just think it is nice to, because I think sometimes people don't start things because they feel like, well, it's not like I'm going to make this my whole life, but it doesn't have to be that big.

rainbow

10:16

All you need is a little bit of curiosity, if I can add to that, when it comes to Yachi. Like, sure, she, she just has a little bit of curiosity to join this, but she's able to bring in her own skills, her own talents, her own interests and apply it to the club, and I think that's just as important. Like, just because it's not exactly what you want to be doing doesn't mean you can't learn from the experience. I look at at that with working somewhere that, like, is still within my career field, but it's definitely not exactly where I want to be. There's a lot of things I do that I'm not really interested in doing all the time or for the rest of my life, but I'm able to learn so many skills from it that it's still a very valuable experience, and I think that's what Yachi is going to be doing with this.

em

10:57

Yeah. So funnily enough, now we get a kind of a look into how the monsters' minds operate a little bit. Here. We are now in the gym getting ready for the practice game. Hinata's all hyped and Yachi asks how can you get so fired up to study for this camp and to just for like a practice match? And Hinata's like because I want to get stronger and win. It's always very simple with Hinata. Yachi still doesn't really get it, saying well, I guess you must have your reason. And then we get scary face. Hinata number five million, Do you need a reason to not want to lose? And Yachi kind of gets the shivers because again, Hinata is intense. And then Hinata asks Kageyama, who of course is on the same exact page as Hinata, and is like what? Do you have a reason to eat when you're hungry?

rainbow

11:38

and then Hinata starts pondering that as if it's an actual like question that he needs to answer. And then Tsukishima comes in and is like it's rhetorical, you idiots, oh that's interesting in the sub.

em

11:50

It's more just him being like right, of course, like yeah, duh oh, that's interesting. It's more him like agreeing with Kageyama like yes and the dub.

rainbow

11:58

he's kind of like thinking about it. He's like do you need a reason to eat when you're hungry? Also, I caught something here. So Yachi asks Hinata, why are you sacrificing so much just for these practice matches? And as she's asking him that Kageyama is walking behind him and I thought it was because Hinata's ultimate goal is catching up to and defeating Kageyama. Like this is all working towards that goal. I'm on my knees.

em

12:24

I like that you brought some Kageyama into this, because that's I didn't do it, the anime did it for me.

rainbow

12:28

Don't tell me, that wasn't a choice they made on purpose. Kageyama could have just been standing to the side, but no, they had to show him walking by at that exact moment.

em

12:41

Yeah, to show him walking by at that exact moment. Yeah, and then Yachi apologizes for using an innate, for asking an inane question, and then kagehina doesn't know what that means.

rainbow

12:45

And then Tsuki yells at them because they just learned that vocab word yes, okay, so I think in the dub I think that's what like, what rhetorical is where the like rhetorical thing comes in. Oh, that's interesting yeah, so that's, yeah, they totally changed that up, which I think that's in its own way inane and doesn't matter, but I think that is interesting. And then I did make a note wanting to win is the same as hunger for Kagehina. It's still connecting that they have a hunger, you know, for victory.

em

13:09

They're illustrating for us villager bees. Why are our main characters like that? Yes, and then we have the coaches from the other school are walking the hallways and they're kind of talking about Karasuno.

rainbow

13:20

I don't know if the guy because there's the one guy is definitely the coach of that team. The other guy's wearing like a university jacket. I think he's the ref. I think he's like an official ref they brought in for this practice match because I guess when they do these kind of very official practice match because Japan is all about they love formalities and they love you know ritual and that kind of thing.

13:39

So I think they have these like official refs that come in and I don't know if that guy is like maybe he plays on a university team, he just like refs part-time. I don't know if it's a money thing, I don't know if he's a coach like I'm gonna have to look into that at some point and really figure that out. And yeah, so the team comes and they all bow and Hinata bows lower than anybody else I noticed.

em

13:59

Yes, they're talking about Karasuno. And the referee guy is like, oh, the fallen crows. And the coach is like, not really anymore, he's talking about how they got into the deuce, into the 30s with Seijo. Then the university guy's like, oh yeah, they do have Kageyama and NishiNoya. And then the coach is like they also have a number 10 who has incredible physical ability, and when he comes on the court like the whole vibe changes.

rainbow

14:22

Hinata is cool. Yes, he's becoming infamous.

em

14:24

I love it so then back at the gym the boys are getting ready and Noya compliments Asahi's little new headband, calling it a string, and Asahi very gaily goes. I guess I feel confident if you say that NishiNoya and he's all hunched over and Daichi hits him over the head and is like stand up straight.

rainbow

14:42

Yes, he's like stop slouching. Yeah, and then we find out that the reason he started doing that is because Kiyoko told him, if he keeps wearing his hair tied back like that, he's gonna go bald. And Asahi can't have that, not in his beautiful, luscious locks.

em

14:56

No's all he has, and baby has a leo rising.

14:58

I feel that all we have is our hair and we just have, like this moment of the boys being silly Tanaka is still shirtless, Noya's laughing at Asahi, Hinata is screaming and Yachi calls them and also just a little sneak peek. I did do a little bit of manga versus anime for this episode. Kids, and it is explicitly said in the manga, but Yachi calls them a flock of birds, which is like a japanese proverb, meaning like a disorderly flock of crows, and Kiyoko laughs and she's like, yeah, I guess they are kind of like that, but once they get on the court they get along really well, that's interesting, so I think, because the dub obviously is in english and they don't have that same connection to the japanese proverbs.

rainbow

15:33

Yachi says oh, they're really scrappy, aren't they? And Kiyoko says well, you know, they are crows, which I like, which for a second I had forgotten and I was like is she gonna say that it's because they're boys, because I'll be angry, which of course she didn't. She said no, it's because they're crows. And then the same thing once they get on the court, they get serious. And is this where we get the moment where we see them going on to the court?

em

15:53

yes, and they all look very badass. It's very reminiscent of when Hinata sees Kageyama for the first time. We have that same whiteout. It's their sheer presence that really like hits Yachi. And then we have the moment you're talking about, where they the two teams bow to each other and Hinata is bowing the lowest because he's very intense and everything he does.

rainbow

16:10

I love it Well, and I think he is just so, still so grateful for every match he gets to play. I think because he did not get to play any games in middle school, except for that one getting to play a practice match in their own gym with it like and not during golden week, it's not a special occasion this team asked to play with them. I think for him he's like they deserve the lowest bow I can give them right now yeah which I mean Takata could go lower.

em

16:32

Let's be real yeah, and they play the game and Yachi is very me watching this, like, oh, did they just score a point? Because we were watching the Olympic volleyball and points would pass by and I'm like, wait, what happened? Volleyball moves very quickly, yes, and Yachi is very impressed. After the game, Hinata tells Yachi that he was also Villager B but he got in trouble for trying to get more attention than the lead because he has main character syndrome. Kageyama laughs at him and Hinata defends villager b and that it's a cool part and asks Kageyama, well, what were you? And Kageyama very probably is like I was the moon and Hinata, for some reason, is like, oh, that is cool yeah, I that's got to have some sort of like cultural significance that we just don't understand.

rainbow

17:14

I it's probably , I think there is like a famous like folk tale of like a princess of the moon and that's probably like this Like they, probably every class puts on that play at some point, it's like us doing it's like Romeo and Juliet for Westerners kind of thing, and there is like in one of the Haikyuu stage plays there's like a whole scene where they like I think they reenact the play or something. There's definitely something where, like the Kageyama stage actor is the moon and it's very funny.

17:41

Yes, yeah, I love that. I just think Hinata and Yachi are so cute.

17:45

Like I do kind of get why straight people ship them but, like I think they just I think it's that they're the same kind of person, I think they have, they're very similar. I think, like if this were a shoujo manga, Yachi would be the main character, who's, all you know, nervous and falls over every place, like I could see a shoujo manga being written about. I don't know anything about volleyball, but now I'm the manager kind of thing, and you know, and they're very cute and Hinata is just like. He helps Yachi gain confidence in herself, because that's and that's one of Hinata's superpowers is he. He shows people like hey, believe in yourself, you can do this.

em

18:19

Believe it. He says town person B has its own kind of awesomeness, yes, which should just be the tagline of this episode. They match energy, but they're giving friends. It's giving platonic, it's giving gay friends, okay, yes.

18:30

So then Kagehina are leaving Yachi's after a Saturday study sesh. We have Yachi's mom there as and so, and he kind of says in front of his mom like oh, we're gonna see tokyo together. Before Yachi's mom has a chance to really ask more about it, the kohai shows up and then the kohai is like, oh, I think Yachi had something to tell you, but of course the mom's not paying attention because she's in second wave feminism or whatever. , and then I love this little kagehina moment. Afterwards they're walking home from Yachi's and you just kind of see this moment where, like, the differences in their personalities still kind of cause these clashes, because Hinata is all very excited and he's like, won't it be great if Yachi joins? And Kagehina isn't like trying to be a dick, he's just very like. You know, that's up to her. He's just very. He's just Hinata's opposite and they don't know how to deal with that. Yet they're very married couple. Because he's like you never agree with anything. You're not very popular, are you?

rainbow

19:20

oh okay, well, the dub made it less gay or more gay, because, depending on your view of it because in that moment Hinata says no wonder you don't have a girlfriend. And then Kageyama says no one asked you. That is so funny. I have to go to ao3 right now because, written from Kageyama's perspective, he's thinking like oh no, Hinata's gonna know that I'm gay and in love with him Fucking literally.

em

19:42

I think the sub sometimes changes because I have also read you're not popular with girls, are you? I really want like an exact translation of this moment. We need to learn Japanese. Yeah, the ultimate weeb move learn Japanese so I can understand the gay nuances and haikyuu.

rainbow

19:57

Exactly, we have Kagehina having this gay married couple moment, and then I love that.

em

20:02

Kageyama looks like he's ready for a tussle after that comment, but then Hinata notices that he's missing his book and he left it at Yachi's, so he has to go back. He has to go back, and this is the first time I noticed. This really funny little detail is when Yachi is handing the book back. The book is like water, damaged and clearly not well loved. I just like that little character detail.

rainbow

20:22

Hinata's sports drink has definitely spilled in his backpack multiple times. I don't think they have like lockers for their like books and stuff in. Japan. I don't, I don't think that they do. Maybe they do, I don't.

20:31

I don't think that they do, maybe they do. I don't know Wherever Hinata is supposed to keep. All of his stuff is a huge fucking mess. There are loose papers everywhere. He has homework. He was supposed to turn in five weeks ago sitting at the bottom of that cubby. There's like snacks, like it's just not good. It's not good, yeah.

em

20:49

We don't hear the whole conversation, but Yachi asks Hinata if she can ask him something, and then she opens up to Hinata about her concerns about joining the volleyball team and like what her mom said to her and Hinata again who's all simple solutions, you want to do this? Right, Then you should. And then asks like is what your mom said bothering you? You should tell her.

rainbow

21:07

He's just so, and he just kind of being like emotionally intelligent, because that is what Yachi needs.

em

21:12

Yes, yes, everyone needs a Hinata in their life. Oh, you're upset with your friend? You should tell them. Yeah, you should talk about it. God, Hinata, I love you. And then again we have what I think is subverting tropes, because I overheard it in your dub. So this is when we have Hinata is dragging Yachi along, running along. They look very Ghibli in this moment too, and Yachi thinks to herself like this Ghibli in this moment too, and Yachi thinks to herself like this is just like a shoujo manga, except he's running too fast. That is literally the subversion right there, because in any other show this would have been like kind of a romantic moment. But Hinata's just helping his friend and running a little too fast.

rainbow

21:43

Yeah, I can't help but wonder because you know this isn't a spoiler alert but foreshadowing there is like some level of like romance later on in like season four. Oh okay, I always skip that because I I don't find it super interesting. But I just wonder, like it's like I feel like for dante was like I do not want any romance. First of all, this is the romance most romantic story I'll ever tell in my life. What are you talking about and it just feels like I don't know.

22:09

It just feels like they're kind of like fighting against that, like yeah, because you know, in other shoujo shounen, mangas and animes like, there is kind of like usually some sort of romantic subplot where, like, the main character has a crush on somebody or somebody has a crush on them, or, in the case of Naruto, it's both. But like this one, like Hinata and Kageyama, like they occasionally will make, like Hinata will joke about Kageyama not being popular with girls, but like they're just so unconcerned, yes, with romance or in girls in any way. Yeah, and I'm not mad about it. It's one of the great things about Haikyuu is we can really be like no, they're all gay and there's evidence for it Seriously.

em

22:46

So they meet Yachi's mom at the train and Yachi yells town, person B can fight too. She tells her mom that she will be the manager. Her mom's like okay, cool, it's very funny little moment. Hinata is very hype to have two managers and look like a champion school. And then Yachi's mom has some proud tears.

rainbow

23:04

Yeah, she's like turned away, which I think is another kind of like second wave feminism, like I can't show weakness, I can't show. And I think another thing that's cute is that after Yachi has like given her little speech and she's done her big yelling, then she's just like so home for dinner. My mom's like yeah, she's like okay, I'll have it ready, and it's just very adorable. And then I think the next thing that happens is we go back to the club room, right, and we see everybody studying and I love Enoshita standing behind Tanaka and Noya, like with the ruler ready to hit them if they even think about getting distracted.

23:38

And Tsukishima and yamaguchi are there like kind of next to kagehina but clearly like Tsukishima wants to go, yeah like is not interested in helping.

em

23:47

And then Yachi talks to takara about how she overheard, about the lack of funds and that she has an idea about how she can help. She wants to make a poster because graphic design is Yachi's passion, that's what her mother does, that's what she's good at. It's we kind of got a hint of that with, like, her notes being so good and organized. I mean, she asks Hinata and Kageyama for a favor and she has them do a little spike in their uniforms and she takes a photo for this poster. Let me tell you something we're at the end of the episode. She makes this poster. While she's working on it in her apartment, her mom comes and gives her a little bit of that tough love, but it's more helpful now like this is more her era. She's businesswoman, she was like this won't do it all. Who is your audience? How do you want to get their attention? And, of course, how else are you going to get the attention? But main character Hinata, who is the main thing on this poster.

rainbow

24:31

And Hinata is riding his bike and he sees it and he stops and he's looking at it and he goes suge, and I cry every fucking time even shows you the flashback of when he was a little kid and he was going by the electronics store and he saw the game and like that was his moment of inspiration and like this is like just another step for him, where he's like, wow, I'm on a poster like playing volleyball and like people are gonna see this and like want to see us playing, and I do love it.

24:58

Yeah, it's amazing. I think her poster looks cool as hell. The poster looks amazing I would donate to them. Where did she get the money to print them?

em

25:04

I don't know details, details. And takara does get a call from someone who wants to donate because of the poster. So you know town person B can fight too. And then we end the episode with the boys waiting to hear about their test scores.

rainbow

25:16

Well, first they have to welcome Yachi to the team because she officially joins, yeah, and she gets her jacket. And then they do their cute thing where they turn around and they point to the thing, except for Tsukishima, who is just standing in the background, which?

em

25:29

is like come on, Even Kageyama does it.

rainbow

25:31

Yeah, I mean, I don't think he's talking, I think he's like he's got like his lips pursed, but he's doing it, he's trying. Yachi officially joins the team as manager and we all cheer and we're so happy to have her with us. Yes, all right, you have some stuff for manga versus anime, right?

em

25:47

So yeah, trying to get back anime stuff, a few things I noticed that I thought were noteworthy. When Hinata is doing his little intense face to Yachi about, like why would I need a reason not to lose? In the manga, Daichi is passing by and thinks to himself Hinata probably doesn't realize it, but he can get disturbingly intense sometimes and I just like that we comment on it like yeah, he is intense. The little kagehina fight that was in the anime where he's like you're not popular, that was not in the manga at all. That was. They added that in and you mentioned this in the first episode because the Ushijima introduction is different in the manga, and so at the very end of because this episode covers two chapters, so at the end of chapter two is when Kakahina are outside of Yachi's apartment at the Saturday study sesh and they note that they're near Shiratorizawa and that's when we have the Ushijima moment and so Yachi's actually there for when Ushijima walks by and is like do you need something from me?

rainbow

26:38

interesting, and so I guess Yachi must live in like a maybe a more like richy rich part she lives in a big apartment, so the prefecture? Yeah, because like if she's near Shira, that probably is there's, like it's probably a little bit more built up, it's less country because I think, like Karasuno is a little country, I think Hinata is even maybe a little bit more rural than the rest of them.

27:01

Yeah, I thought that was interesting as well and I love that I didn't know about the Daichi commenting on how disturbingly intense. I like that he says disturbingly, because it is unnerving.

em

27:12

It is not, but yeah, that's all I got for manga versus anime. It's fun to see these little differences in what they choose to do.

rainbow

27:18

Yeah, and a big thanks to Em for taking that on. I know that I was doing it and I really dropped the ball pretty early on.

em

27:25

It's just more Haikyuu content for me to take. That's right. That's right. I also feel like you read faster than me. Well, I do everything fast because I don't know. I think someone's coming to get me at all times, so we got to hurry up.

rainbow

27:37

It's the anxiety and the New Yorker in you. Yeah, exactly All right.

em

27:42

So now our character spotlight. Who's it going?

rainbow

27:45

to be. It's going to be the one and only Shimizu Kiyoko Very excited. Yes, we decided to do do Kiyoko for this episode because we really haven't had a chance to talk about her and, as m mentioned earlier, we get a lot of really good stuff from her in this episode, so we wanted to talk about her, we wanted to give her her flowers. I have a little bit of a quote from the wiki here. I think I'm not even going to read all of this because we we know most of it.

28:12

, but quote quiet and reserved at first glance, Kiyoko is generally known for her strict and straightforward disposition due to the simple fact that she's serious and passionate about her position as the volleyball club's team manager. She appears aloof, but she's shown to care a lot about the members of the volleyball club. , she's extremely shy, but she begins to open up a lot more in a scene, smiling and talking more often, even cracking jokes to let Yachi ease up whenever the latter feels anxious. She's such a good little senpai and she takes such good care of her kohai. I love them. Anything to say about her personality, anything, just that we're finally really getting to see more of it and I love it.

28:51

Yeah, her name, meaning her family name, is shimizu. That breaks down to the. She is clear, pure and clean, and mizu means water, and I think they actually talk about that when we meet nekoma and when Tanaka tells yamamoto about Kiyoko's name and he's like her name means a pure spring or something like that that's funny which there is a lot of like cleanliness and purity in her name, because then in her given name, Kiyoko, the kiyo is virtue, undefiled, pure, clean, righteous, gallant, which I love, that .

em

29:24

And then the ko means child, which I was like okay, well, yeah, this is kind of I think the pureness and the cleanness are very high standards in japan, like these are really high values. And then the child thing is like so of course, a pure little girl is the perfect thing for a woman that you want yeah, patriarchy wants pure clean little girls yeah, unfortunately, as the as the person that everyone is lusting after yeah

rainbow

29:50

it's not great. It is and like I have a lot of feelings about like purity and like you know where that, where that comes from and why people want that and stuff. But, , I like that part of her name is water. I enjoy that for her mermaid, Kiyoko au when. All right, moving on to her character sheet, she is in class three, two, which I kind of thought she would be in a higher class from that, because what we know is that classes like one, two and three are a little bit more basic and four and five are college prep.

30:18

So she's not the smartest oh my god, even though she wears glasses.

em

30:21

What is this? Yeah, honestly you would think they'd put her, but that's fine you know what?

rainbow

30:25

that's just another fun subversion. Not that she's an idiot, by any means. She definitely shows that she has like intelligence she's's just not an advanced class. Yeah, exactly, she's a volleyball club manager, as we know. Her height is 5'5" and she's a third year. Her birthday is January 6th making her a Capricorn. How do we feel about that?

em

30:44

Love it. She looks like a Capricorn. Let me tell you about Capricorn women they are elegant, they are hot and that they work hard. And that's a good sign for Yachi. Actually they're both earth signs. This team needs a couple of earth sign women to get it together, so I'm happy it's what they need.

rainbow

31:00

Her favorite food is tenmusu. I think I said that right. Yeah, tenmusu, which is tempura shrimp rice balls, and they look yummy. I looked up a picture of them and now I want them. I'm hungry, me. I looked up a picture of them and now I want them. I'm hungry, all right. So her current worry is whether to have Jagariko or Jagabi potato sticks for a snack. She's got no worries, man, I love that she is just not worried about a thing.

em

31:27

Just what she's going to have for a snack. That's very real.

rainbow

31:30

Here's what she's looking for. All right, and then we have her five point ability parameters Her power is a one, her technique is a two, her intelligence is a three, her stamina and jumping are fours and her speed is a five.

em

31:45

Interesting. She's got some pretty impressive parameters and her little character she in her picture.

rainbow

31:49

She's kind of walking. I was expecting something I guess a little bit more like shy for her, but she's just kind of walking. I was expecting something I guess, a little bit more like shy for her, but she's just kind of walking. She's wearing her tights and she looks great. I love her. She's got her cute little mole on her face. Big fan of Kiyoko, I'm excited for more. We get to see a little bit more of her throughout the season and then she has like an episode in season four where I feel like we really get like kind of an inner monologue from her in a way that we don't see that often.

em

32:13

It's time for the world's favorite game who in Haikyuu. This week's scenario is brought to us by Zale, and it's what kind of pet would they have? I think today we'll just talk about mainly Karasuno. So, starting off with Hinata, what kind of puppy? Yeah, he'd have a dog. Yeah, he's a dog boy for sure. Yeah, I feel like the first two is easy. Hinata is dog, Kageyama is cat?

rainbow

32:34

Yes, absolutely, although I do headcanon that when they're older and retired and living together, they go to get animals. And Kageyama intends to get a cat and Hinata intends to get a dog, but they end up getting the opposite and the dog is very hyperactive, like Hinata, and the cat is very angry, like Kageyama and Hinata has, and Hinata's determined, like the guy at the adoption place is like oh yeah, nobody seems to want this cat. He's really mean, he doesn't get along with anyone, and Hinata takes that as a personal challenge and it's like I will get this cat to love me.

33:04

If I could get that guy to love me. I can get this cat to love me. And then, yeah, the dog just won't stop following Kageyama around and he's like all right, fine, he has big brown eyes like my boyfriend. So well, we have a fic, ladies and gentlemen, anyway, look for that fic on a03 sometime in the next 10 to 20 years, when I get around to writing it Noya is giving iguana like I feel like he has a lizard or something Noya definitely has a lizard or like one of those little like Sugar gliders.

33:31

Yeah, you know, yeah know, yeah, that's definitely, yeah, he's definitely. He has an animal that maybe he shouldn't have. He definitely, yeah, he definitely has an animal that he bought from some guy in an alleyway and if he's not careful it will eat him, like that guy who had like seven monitor lizards. Moving on to Tanaka, he is giving snake. Yeah, oh my God, yes, giving snake. Yeah, oh my god, yes, definitely he's giving snake, or he's giving should have a snake, but he's actually afraid of them.

em

33:58

He can't handle having to feed them a mouse. You know, yeah, he doesn't.

rainbow

34:01

Yeah, he makes his sister do it for him every month. Yeah, , also he's giving bunny rabbit oh yeah.

em

34:08

Yeah, I was. I was thinking some sort of like little critter, like a hamster, yeah, but I love bunny yeah, something.

rainbow

34:14

He has a whole pack of guinea pigs because they're pack animals, okay, Daichi.

em

34:21

Daichi and Suga also are like Daichi's giving golden retriever, and then Suga.

rainbow

34:26

I feel like I'm a gray kitten yeah, a little gray cat who is like Kiki, very adorable but causes all of the mischief and mayhem. Suga has the cat that will walk up to the glass of water and you'll go, don't you dare, and it'll look at you and it'll hold its paw right next to it and it'll just keep eye contact as it slowly pushes it off the mantle or the table.

34:48

Yeah, that's definitely. I could also see Suga being the kind of person who's like I'm I want to get a goldfish and then a week later has to have a little funeral for it because something went awry seriously Tsuki.

em

35:01

It has a little canary, oh, a little bird, because that's the closest thing to dinosaurs is birds yeah, he's like, well, these were dinosaurs once so yamaguchi might have like a hamster or something yeah, I could see yamaguchi with a little hamster, with a little hamster wheel. The NPCs have tarantulas All three of them Just to give them something. Yeah, they fight the tarantulas.

rainbow

35:22

I don't know who has a turtle. Kanoshita has a turtle. I feel like, Sure, let's give him a turtle. Let's give him a turtle. What about Kiyoko?

em

35:34

Either a kitten or a bunny.

rainbow

35:36

Yeah, I could see her with a bird too, though Mainly just because of the whole Disney princess vibe. She gives off where she's like singing to the bird every morning, and it's singing back to her. Yachi is too nervous to have a pet. She's too afraid she'll kill it.

em

35:50

Yeah, Yachi has the goldfish that lives forever.

rainbow

35:54

Yeah, that she maintains its life painstakingly. I was going to say she has a pet rock because she can't kill that, and even then she's nervous. , and then I want to throw in Ukai and Takeda as well. Ukai has the pet rock. Yeah, Ukai doesn't even have a pet rock. He's like I can't get attached. Yeah, , and then Takeda, I could see. I could see him having like a little fish. I could see him having like a little beta fish that he keeps in a bowl. Yeah, yeah, there we go, thank you. Thank you, zale. Yes, thank you, zale.

em

rainbow

36:49

It is the spoiler zone. What do you got for us, babe? All right, yes, I do have some stuff. At the beginning of the episode we have Ukai talking to Tsukishima and Hinata about how they're going to get better at blocking. He's like you know, he's like we're going to start working on your blocking because they are middle blockers. And I'd say Tsukishima does pretty good, but you know he definitely has more to learn. And then Hinata sometimes you forget that he's a middle blocker because he's doing so many spikes. But Ukai looks directly at Tsukishima when he says when I'm through with you two, you'll even be able to block Ushiwaka. And TTsuki has a moment where he thinks to himself like well, I'll never be able to do that. Which jokes on you, motherfucker. Guess what you do. Ukai was right. That was a beautiful moment of foreshadowing.

em

37:36

Yeah, honestly, and it's so funny you can see their reactions are so different. You know, Hinata's in his mind is like, yeah, I'm gonna block Ushiwaka. And Suga's just like, still very much. Yeah, Suga has the height, but none of the passion. And Hinata has all the passion, none of the height. And yeah, no, that is a fun, we're sowing those seeds in nice and early.

rainbow

37:55

Yeah, absolutely. You know Tsukishima is not going to be saying that at the end of season two.

38:01

, you know he's going to think that he can block him a handful of times there's one thing Tsuki won't do, it's get ahead of himself absolutely not ever, ever, get out of himself no, and then I wanted to talk a little bit more about Kiyoko, because in season four we learned that she was part of the track and field team, which is why her speed is so high. Yes, in middle school and then, I think, something she got like injured, I think, and then so she didn't do track and field in high school and we learned that she became the volleyball club manager in first year because Daichi just asked her. You know it was. That was in the era where, like Daichi, Suga and Asahi joined, they realized that like this team isn't doing that great, and they really took a lot of initiative, especially Daichi, and so Daichi went out and found a manager for them and I guess, you know, I assume Kiyoko and him were probably just in the same class he knew she didn't join probably didn't have anything else going on.

38:44

She didn't have a club. So she was like hey. He was like hey, do you want to try being our manager? And she just kind of like Yachi, like she did it on the whim on a whim. She didn't know much about volleyball. When she's speaking to Yachi earlier in this episode, she's really speaking from experience because she's like you know, you might join on a do something on a whim, but then it'll come to really matter to you and we see that the volleyball club has come to really matter to Kiyoko and so I really love that and I love that we kind of get that connection. Honestly, this was the first time I really connected those two moments, yeah, and saw that and I just really again, I just really love that lesson.

em

39:15

Like you can start things on a whim and like you should start things on a whim. I started an anime Twitter on a whim and now I have a wife and a podcast and a podcast Like, yeah, if you have a little bit of curiosity, join it, do it, just do it, you're gonna die anyway.

rainbow

39:31

Yeah, and you know what, maybe you'll try something. You'll be like, hey, this isn't for me, like that's. Another thing is don't force yourself to do something that you don't like to do If you're not interested in it. Once you've given it a try, it's okay to put stuff down. I was really lucky growing up. My parents, they wanted us to do extracurricular stuff but they never made us stay with something. I tried dance, wasn't into it. I tried gymnastics. A coach yelled at me and I cried I wasn't into it. I tried soccer I was too nice and hated running and my parents were OK with. They were like, ok, try it for the season, try it for this. And then you know, as soon as I was like, no, I don't want to, I think gymnastics was the one thing where, like I very much, was like so upset, and my mom was like, ok, we're not coming back here.

40:11

But, you know. And then you know, I did rec volleyball just again, on a whim it sounded. I did it in third grade and then I did it for several more years because I liked sticking with it. And then I thought about joining the high school team and they said I had to run and I said, never mind, I don't want to do that, I don't like running.

em

40:29

We were watching soccer and I was kind of I know nothing about most sports so I was like, is this like a physical sport, Are you allowed to? And you were kind of telling me, were like I would stop and help people up on the field. I literally would.

rainbow

40:40

I would be like dribbling the ball down the length of the field to go to the side to like score and stuff. And then the girl from the other team would be trying to get to me and she would trip and fall and I would stop, turn around and help her up and my parents would be like, no, don't do that. And I'm like seven and very confused because I'm like you taught me to be nice to people and to help people, not on the field, not on the field. When you're out there on the field, it's do or die. But now you're too soft. No, I'm too soft for that. Yeah, that's why volleyball was nice is because like, yeah, I can help out my own teammate yes, anything else for the spoiler zone?

em

41:15

no, I don't think so. Great episode. Love you, da Daichi Happy to have you on the team. We love Daichi too. We do too. Only one will live Until next time. Fly high.
