hello everyone and welcome to fly a queer haiku podcast. I'm rainbow, they she and I'm m, and today we're talking about season two, episode six. Tempo you good.

em

00:23

I'm good. I'm sorry. I love to say I'm ready when I'm actually not ready and I'm just doing a little bit of adjusting of the microphone.

rainbow

00:29

You're doing it so intensely.

em

00:31

I know, I just realized what my face looked like I wish I had a picture and we're good to go. Okay, hang on, Baby. What's your tempo? Oh, what's that Lizzo song?

rainbow

00:45

That's what I'm thinking of that is what you're thinking of. Uh, I'm a thick girl, I need tempo, but what's the whole line? Oh yeah, slow songs. They for skinny girls.

em

00:54

I'm a thick bitch, I need tempo. Hinata is a thick bitch who needs tempo yeah, honestly, Hinata dancing to every lizzo song.

rainbow

01:02

although I had canon that Bokuto is the number one Lizzo stan from Haikyuu, I could definitely see that for him. Yeah, absolutely, but before we get into this episode, y'all, I finally did it. I got him to watch.

em

01:16

Naruto. Naruto, or as Hinata would say. So she hits an octave. I don't understand.

rainbow

01:23

So I showed her some stuff from like the Land of Waves arc. I made the mistake of skipping through because I was afraid that she wasn't going to be interested if she had to watch everything. And that was wrong, because she wants to see things.

em

01:35

Well, I was gonna say we essentially skipped season one. I feel like we're at the end of season two and we're actually now like watching through, and I'm not complaining because it's a lot of stuff that I don't care about.

rainbow

01:45

But now we're at the good stuff. We're at the tuning exams. We made it through the forest of death just finishing up the preliminary oh no, actually we just finished the preliminary matches. Oh God, that's right. We met Jiraiya. We'll talk about that, but first I wanted Em to share some of her thoughts on certain characters. We met Gaara and we met Rock Lee. Those are the two most significant, so I'll let you choose who you want to talk about first, I want to kill Rock Lee with a gun.

em

02:10

If I saw Rock Lee at the end of a dark hallway, I would kill him with a gun. He's so scary. And please don't take these opinions seriously, because I am coming at Naruto very lighthearted and barely paying attention. But Rock Lee shakes something deep within me.

rainbow

02:28

She every I like. Look at her every time Rock Lee shows up on screen, and just her face. I, I'm going to find a Haikyuu face that it's like when. Oh, it's like a Tsukishima face when Kagehina says something db.

em

02:41

Oh my God, I hate seeing him on my screen, but he, we just watched him fight Gaara and he held his own pretty well. Yeah, that was pretty good. Yeah, she likes.

rainbow

02:48

Gaara, she likes that. He's a little psychopath.

em

02:51

I don't know much about Gaara, except he's got bloodlust, yes, and he looks like a punk, yeah, like I've seen him. I saw him at the anarchist book fair yesterday.

rainbow

03:01

Yes, absolutely. I'm pretty excited for her to see more. You know, I've rewatched Naruto multiple times throughout my life and there are certain things that I almost always skip because I'm like, yeah, yeah, whatever, Get to the good stuff. Oh, my god. So Jiraiya's pervy sage. I have issues with that already and I usually kind of skip those first few episodes with him. I like to get to the like the really good training stuff with like the smoning jutsu and all that and the rasengan. I forgot that there is a moment when Jiraiya is looking at a shirtless Naruto and says the words you've got a tight little body.

em

03:33

You have a tight, sexy little body, is what he said. And can I just say that is a theme that I am noticing of the few full episodes I've watched so far is there's a lot of like groomy vibes in Naruto. Every child seems to have an adult that wants them in a way that I'm not fully comfortable with. And yeah, we meet this dude. And before this even happens, Naruto does his little sexy, his sexy jutsu, his sexy jutsu, which I find already uncomfortable because he's what a 12 year old boy. And so that scene happened where he's like I'll be in in my sexy jitsu for you and the guy was like can you stay like that the whole time? Meanwhile he's like a naked girl, so that was already side eye. And then he, as a little boy, he's like you've got a sexy little body. And I was like what are we watching? What have you put on my screen?

rainbow

04:17

we like we both reacted to that because, again, like I usually skip that part. I don't really like I don't even remember the guy with the round glasses who's the closet perv. I don't really like all of that, like I just ignore that and I usually skip over it because I want to get to the good stuff, I want to get to the good battles. At this point I'm really just trying to get to the Gaara Naruto fight that's coming.

em

04:38

I don't know if there's any safe adults. Is Kakashi a safe adult? I don't know. Adult.

rainbow

04:42

I don't know. I don't know if anybody's safe in that show. I mean, you know they are sending children to war, so you know, maybe they don't even see them as children they're. You know, once you become a guinea boom, you're an adult and you can be objectified by an old man. Wild stuff, guys oh yeah, yeah, it's just you know it's. It's something we're gonna keep going, I think yeah.

05:01

I don't think that's stopping us. but we, but we'll keep our eye out for more of that, because, yeah, I guess, as a kid I just kind of like that, I just didn't like think about that as much, and now that I'm an adult I'm like, oh, that's not how you talk to children. Yeah, really OK, so that, yeah, that's, that's our Naruto stuff. She hates Rock Lee and it's hilarious. Okay, moving on to housekeeping, you have something to say?

em

05:24

And I'm like, do I want to say it? I was just feeling impassioned at the beginning of my note taking for this episode because I was finding my place in the manga and I was looking at the fight again in the manga and I was just like, ugh. I have basically an another thing moment for the last episode with the fight the specific choice that Hinata makes to wrap his arms around Kageyama's middle and say I won't let go until you toss to me. It's a really loving choice. It's really giving the main character showing the beast love to tame it. I'll just hold you until you understand me, I don't know. So I just made a little. I just had one more thing to say, because I'll never not have something to say about that fight and just as we leave that episode behind us, I had one last thing.

rainbow

06:10

That's it. Kake hina, beauty and the beast au win. It's in my brain already, okay, and it's time for my recap.

em

06:17

Yeah, give it to us, I'll count you down all righty three, two one.

rainbow

06:23

Hinata is ready to evolve and Ukai takes him to the one person who can help the demon crow coach. While Hinata learns about tempo, Kageyama gets some much needed advice from his former senpai. Ukai tells Kageyama about a new kind of set that will let Hinata make decisions in the air. Kageyama and the rest of the team get to work on practicing some new skills, while Tsukishima sinks deeper into apathy. The week-long summer training camp is about to begin. How will Karasuno fare this?

em

06:49

time around. This is a really I love this episode. It's such a great follow-up to the fight.

rainbow

06:53

Yeah no, this is a wonderful follow-up to the fight. I think it's great there's so much of like Kagehina, thinking about each other but just not even like looking each other in the eye.

em

07:06

This episode is them going to volleyball therapy? Yes, separately.

rainbow

07:11

Yes, this is them working on themselves so that they can come back together, yes, and be strong again, precisely, okay. So, jumping into the episode, we have a scene that, if it were Naruto, would be creepy.

em

07:23

Yes, and I'm so happy. I thought the same thing because we're picking up right off. If you remember, at the end of the last episode, Hinata went to the store to see Ukai and be like how should I train? So now, at the beginning of this episode, they're driving together and Ukai's driving and Hinata's like so where are we going?

rainbow

07:40

and Ukai's like you'll see when we get there. And I just had a moment, probably because I was primed from watching Jiraya last night, where I'm like, if this were another anime, we would be very concerned for Hinata, like do Hinata's parents know where he's?

em

07:52

going. No, that little exchange of sentences is giving beginning of horror movie for sure. But no, it's completely innocent. He's taking Hinata somewhere to be coached by who?

rainbow

08:02

we finally get to meet the infamous old coach Ukai. I love it.

em

08:05

Yeah, meanwhile, Kageyama is going to that youth training camp that he saw advertised, yes, on the poster from last episode and I it's really giving like anguished, like acts of like what. What did I even think I was gonna do here? Class is over. I'm a fool. Also, can we talk about? As he's walking up, he scares a child with his face.

08:28

I literally my second note for this episode is all the children are afraid of Kageyama because they are because, like he bps into this little kid and as animals and children alike fear Kageyama's just resting bitch face and he starts screaming and crying and what really sent me is that there's another kid walking in the background with a parent and he's like you scared him.

rainbow

08:47

Yeah, he's like yelling, he's like you're scary and the mom's trying to like drag him away poor Kageyama like that's just his face.

em

08:54

He is not even trying to be scary.

rainbow

08:56

I know I'm thinking about like a, like kagehina, and like getting older and like their friends start having kids and Kageyama is afraid to go see them. Because what if the kids are afraid of him and don't want to hang out, don't want to spend time with him and then he sees who else but my cousin?

em

09:14

what are you doing here with your little nephew? Back to grandpa Ukai Tanaka had described him once as the great commander that led the nameless Karasuno to nationals. I want him, I want Grandpa Ukai, and I don't care what anyone has to say.

rainbow

09:30

I'm so glad that we get to talk about this. Em loves an old man.

em

09:34

Sometimes I do, and let me tell you something. This show is full of children so I don't get to thirst over a lot of people in this show. But Grandpa, oh Grandpa.

rainbow

09:48

I just he's so fine. Anyway he is and he's got a swagger and he's listen that like smile, that he does when they talk about him being like the the demon crow coach, I get it, coach me in the bedroom.

em

09:58

He's such a classic crotchety old man because, grandpa Ukai is coaching children in his backyard and Ukai's like you just got out of the hospital. And, very classic old man, he's like well, when they let you out of the hospital, that means you can do whatever you want.

rainbow

10:10

I'm like that's right, grandpa, you are limber, you can do whatever you want to me if I am reading some grandpa Ukai x reader fanfic. So they're out his house and he, you know he's got a backyard with a volleyball net, but his house looks huge to me, like how big is this house.

em

10:29

You know they've had. They own a store, they have a farm maybe there's some. There's some money in the Ukai name. Yeah, they got some money yeah, yeah, all right.

rainbow

10:38

It's like that was the first time I ever noticed. I was like damn, that's so much bigger than the other houses we've seen so far. I guess it's probably like out in the country, it's probably like a farmhouse, so it is bigger. How many people live there? Is it just Ukai by himself? I don't know.

em

10:51

Does he need a woman to help take care of the property?

rainbow

10:55

I love this. I didn't realize we were going to be doing so much thirsting. Listen, it's not going to be the whole episode, just anytime Ukai's on screen.

em

11:02

I have so many quotes from Grandpa Ukai in my notes because he's just giving lesson after lesson and I also really love and the anime does this, I think, better than the manga when he's talking to Hinata and he's like you want to fight when you're this small? And Hinata says I want to fight because I'm this small. And as soon as he says it, we get a flash of Grandpa Ukai. The background is now a stadium and the back of Hinata is the same coloring as the little giant, because I bet the little giant said that verbatim to him In the past.

rainbow

11:32

Yeah. And so he's like oh, and immediately Ukai's like okay, I know what you need, I know what you want, let's do this. I just love this so much. I have actually a note where I would love an AU where Grandpa Ukai didn't get sick and got to coach in their first year.

em

11:48

Like imagine an AU where Grandpa Ukai was the coach.

rainbow

11:54

He's a really, really good coach for Hinata. I think it would be fascinating to see him coaching Kageyama.

em

11:59

We wouldn't have had a dramatic fight because right away Grandpa Ukai would have been like as we will get into. But basically Grandpa Ukai affirms what Hinata has been saying, because Hinata kind of explains the situation to him and he's like I know it sounds weird and Grandpa Ukai's like it's not weird, weird in a quick attack. The leader is you.

rainbow

12:18

Yes, he says in the dub. What he says is no matter what level of setter you're dealing with, whenever you're using a quick attack, the person who's calling the shots is you, which I fucking. I wish Kageyama was there to hear that, or Suga, or or coach Ukai, like literally, coach Ukai is there to hear that and he goes oh shit, you're right, yeah yeah, coach Ukai said oh shit, I forgot about the basics of volleyball because I got blinded by the gay homoeroticism of their freak quick.

12:43

Yeah, honestly yeah, after he gets thrown several times by his grandpa, Kageyama would look up to Ukai for so many reasons also, I just realized, grandpa Ukai, I bet that's exactly what Iwaizumii is going to be like as an old man. Tell me I'm wrong. I know you're right. No, I'm absolutely right. Ukai has some very Kageyama energy with the way he's throwing around his grandson. Is this where we go back to Oikawa, or do you have anything else?

em

13:07

Yeah, I was going to say and there's that literary term back to the farm, back to Oikawa.

rainbow

13:16

I love how unimpressed his little nephew is with Oikawa's treatment of Kageyama, because Oikawa's very childish, he's being so immature, he's doing the like pulling the eyelid thing down. He's like oh, look at me, tobio, oh, my favorite baka. Well, after that one in Kakeguuri that you showed me, and Kageyama.

em

13:31

He literally begs Oikawa. He bows and keeps saying like please, please, please, hear me out, I need your advice. And it just struck me like he's doing this for Hinata, like he is throwing his pride away to Oikawa of all people, because he knows he needs to talk to senpai well.

rainbow

13:49

So because he goes to this training camp and like I asse he's going to talk to, maybe like the, the people who are running the training camp and being like, hey, I, I'm having this issue, can you help me? But instead he sees Oikawa and he knows Oikawa is the person I need to talk to about this. Like fate was like here you go, like this is the perfect person.

em

14:07

For sure. I think it is interesting and I feel like Kageyama had like zero plan. I think that his instinct with being stuck like this is just to go back to basics. So he was like that's just kind of where he was led to on instinct. And, yeah, it is kind of divine that Oikawa would show up and show us why he is the kind of setter he is, because the advice he gives Kageyama is perfect. After Kageyama begs, Oikawa's like okay, I'll hear you out. And Kageyama, instead of just telling him what's going on, he tries to use this hypothetical with a wise me. He's like, let's say, a wise me wanted to do something really difficult right before. And Oikawa's like stop with your little hypotheticals and just tell me what's going on.

rainbow

14:43

I love you. That's it, like literally what I was trying to word in my. I was like, how am I, how do I need to say this? Because, yeah, Oikawa's like, don't try to use your shitty little metaphor, like, if you have a question, ask me, just ask me, you know. And then he explains. He says Hinata wants to open his eyes during the quick, and I don't think you know, I don't think that's gonna work. And Oikawa is just like reading him to filth. He's like oh, you think you you should still be making the decisions, you think you should be calling the shots?

em

15:11

I think we really get Kageyama's point of view of the whole situation really perfectly in this scene. And also, I just want to say this whole scene is really giving little brother talking to his usually mean older brother of, like, Hinata wants to do something really hard and I don't know how to do it and he's being really jerk about it, like it's really giving that. But no, I think it really ss up his side, because Oikawa really spells it out perfectly, because he tells Kageyama you sound like a dictator. You're basically saying it's too, it's too hard, so just do as I say. Have you even tried to give shrimpy the toss he wants? If you're thinking the situation is as good as it can get and being defensive about it, you're basically a coward. And that's exactly what it is.

rainbow

15:47

Kageyama assed that they had the best that they could possibly do and just went on the defense when he had to try to challenge that yeah, I mean honestly, like Ukai and Oikawa are just affirming everything we were saying in the last episode and I think it takes somebody like Oikawa to point it out to Kageyama, because as annoying as Oikawa is and as much as Kageyama like kind of fears him in a way, he respects him so much and he knows that he is such a good setter and he knows if it's about setting, Oikawa's probably right. And Oikawa says something about like you want to stick to the status quo, which is like exactly what everyone's been saying. To Hinata's like no, we got to keep doing it like we've been doing it. We have to keep doing it like we've been doing it. And Hinata's like that didn't work and we have to change it. And now we finally have people who are like yeah, that's not working, you need to change it.

em

16:36

And now Kageyama is understanding talented people with high game sense, because Oikawa repeats the same sentiment that grandpa Ukai said earlier, which is don't get the wrong idea, the one who has leadership in an attack isn't you. It's the little shrimp. Let him in the driver's seat. You're the passenger, princess.

rainbow

16:52

Yes like just accept it.

em

16:54

Oh yeah, I, I really love this and I, and it just highlights again what made Oikawa a great setter, because he understood this principle way before this conversation yeah, absolutely well.

rainbow

17:04

And you, you even see it in the way that he works with his team, like going back to season one, when we watched them play. Like he knows how to get Kindaichi where he needs to go.

17:13

He knows how to get the other spikers where they need to be, and for Kageyama, he just still hasn't quite gotten that. Yeah, but this is where he's starting to learn it. And then we go back to Grandpa Ukai again and we have another quote that I love, which is the most effective weapon is one in which you are fluent and familiar, because this is where Coach Ukaiai had. He tells Hinata first like okay, you need to block, and I'm gonna show you these different kinds of quicks yeah, he says  in the sub don't think of your weapon as something that's unknown, and I love that oh, I really, yeah, I really like that.

em

17:49

That's not how it was in this one, because basically their issue really is they did come up with this crazy move that normally people can't do, so I think think the biggest mistake that Ukai and Kageyama made was thinking oh wow, and just being kind of blinded by that. But I think Grandpa Ukai really brings us back to the basics and we're going to get into tempos and stuff, and it's like you are treating this as something special when really it's not.

rainbow

18:10

If you apply volleyball theory to what you're doing, yes, and this is where young Ukai, coach Ukai, realizes that it's not just Hinata who needs to improve, because grandpa Ukai says there's no better set in volleyball than one where it is easy for the spiker to hit.

em

18:26

Yes, young Ukai is like, he like runs out, I gotta go, yeah.

rainbow

18:29

And I think Ukai even says like you know, like you know, that setter of yours is going to have some work, work to do too. But it sounds like my grandson has got that covered. And so then we see him driving like a maniac back to town, just screaming in his car. But even when they're fighting, Hinata is still talking about how amazing Kageyama is. Grandpa Ukai is showing him some stuff and Hinata says something about like well, I'm working with a really amazing setter, so he's able to just get the ball right to me oh okay, the conversation I feel like went a little differently where he's telling because this is right after Ukai runs off.

em

19:02

He says to Hinata if you want to fight battles in the midair, then your setter has to get better too. And what Hinata is kind of saying is Kageyama is amazing, so he'll be fine. I need to focus on getting better so that he doesn't leave me in the dust. Let's talk about the absolute trust that that takes. Hinata's not worried. He's like yeah, I'm sure he's already working on stuff. I need to get better. This is the whole thing. He'll be fine. I'll kill everybody in this room, so just me.

rainbow

19:31

I'm coming for you. No, I totally. I love that though. Yeah, like, even though they just had this big fight and like you know, Hinata had to grab onto Kageyama and say, like you need to toss to me. And he listened to Kageyama say like no, I'm not, I'm, you know, we're not doing this, you're being selfish. Blah, blah, blah. Even after all of that, he's still like Kageyama is going to do what he needs to do, and this is why and I'll have more to say in the spoiler zone a little bit.

em

19:56

But this is why they can separate like this when they're training, because it is a matter of course that they'll come back to each other once they're strong enough. Yes, so, whatever, this is a straight story. Also, before we get too much further, I just wanted to go back really quick because with Oikikawa, our last little moment with him is he's walking away with his nephew. He's all happy-go-lucky and his nephew's like why are you so happy? And he's like well, and he says it's because tobio is doing a lot worse than he thought he was.

rainbow

20:24

But I also think he was just happy to see tobio yeah, I think there is something about like tobio came to me for advice, moi, even though that you just happened to run into each other, yeah, honestly. And then he like looks because when Tobio was bowing to him, Oikawa had his nephew get a picture. Oh, yes, and the nephew was reading him for this too. He's like really, oh, my god, I love the nephew and the nephew is the audience stand in. The nephew definitely looks up to a wise me, oh my god.

em

20:51

Yeah, he definitely tells a wise me about this later.

rainbow

20:53

Yes, and they have a good laugh about it. But yeah, then you look at the picture and Oikawa's like I'm totally blurry in it and I also like that you get to see the rest of his camera roll and he has so many pictures of his nephew on there and I'm like they have a very like kind of brotherly relationship but like you can tell he really loves his nephew and I think he likes spending time with him. It's cute, honestly very sweet. Either that or his sister was like you are going to get pictures of my son or I will murder you. I could see either way happening.

em

21:19

So right before our commercial break, Ukai does find Kageyama in town and grabs him and yells a toss that stops and Kageyama goes, what? So after the commercial break we are back with back to the farm, with grandpa Ukai in his big house and probably single he emphasizes the things that are important to focus on right now the fundamentals and practicing to make up for lost time, and that Hinata needs to get used to touching the ball. The ball should become an extension of himself.

rainbow

21:45

Basically, ball is life yes, exactly I love that Hinata is learning a million tiny important lessons here, like grandpa Ukai is giving him like everything he needs to succeed here. and it's, it's really amazing. And you know, I like to think that our coach Ukai, the young coach Ukai, is gonna get to this point at some point, because that's the thing is, like they're all learning, even the coaches. Takada is starting from basically nothing. Coach Ukai is starting from like yeah, I played, but I don't know how to be a coach, right, and I really love that they're getting to this place.

em

22:19

For sure it is realistic because, yeah, you have to remember like he was just kind of dragged on for supposedly one game and now he's just coaching this team. So like I wanted to give him shit for forgetting these basics, but like he's never coached before, it's fine. And he even says, because we go back to him at the store with Kageyama and he tells Kageyama what we said earlier, which is that he's he was treating their quick as something special when he shouldn't have.

rainbow

22:40

He should have gone back to the basics of of learning the tempos yeah, and he even in the dub he kind of talks about it as like tempos, like this theory, but I never really got to see it be put in practice. Yeah, and so now he and Kageyama have to kind of like, or he has to like. Show Kageyama like this is how you do it. And at first he's explaining to Kageyama the difference between the set that he's doing and the set that he needs to be doing. It's one where it stops in the air and he's talking about the highest point of the ball needs to match with the spiker's highest point in the air, and Kageyama doesn't get it at first. And then Ukai explains it again and he gets it immediately because it's volleyball and I love how ready to learn Kageyama is well, I think he kind of remembers Oikawa's words of have you even tried?

em

23:23

and he's like, well, I gotta fucking try. What else am I gonna do? Not have my volleyball soulmate.

rainbow

23:28

You're crazy yeah, absolutely not. So. Kageyama and Ukai are talking through this and I love having like. I love that they're like a little, a little pair, because what position did Ukai play? Do you remember? Was he setter? I think he was a setter. I don't think he played a lot.

em

23:44

He wasn't the starting setter, but I think he was the setter just a couple of setters talking about, an extremely hard sounding fucking toss.

rainbow

23:50

By the way, yeah, and he talks about how, like you know, and he has to be able to do it for every different like a D quick, an A quick, a C quick, and how it's going to get harder the further out he has to go, and he's talking about the rotation and a bunch of things that personally I don't entirely understand and that's okay, but it does seem really hard. But of course, Kageyama is like, yeah, I can do that, and like, because he's Kageyama, but again it's like Hinata is also very sure of it. He's like he doesn't even know what Kageyama needs to do and what he needs to learn and how hard it's gonna be. But he's like he's got it, he'll figure it out.

24:22

And I do feel like Kageyama is kind of like at this point. In the last episode, during their fight, he was like no, Hinata will never be able to do this and I feel like, you know, maybe after their fight or because of it, he's like you know what? No, maybe Hinata can do it. Maybe if Hinata trains, he will get to this point and I love that. Thank you, Kageyama, for accepting that your volleyball partner is going to work just as hard as you will yeah, no, I think I think he really listened to Oikawa.

em

24:48

And yeah, what else? What else are you going to do? Obviously, Hinata's not gonna just be like, okay, I'll just give up on that.

rainbow

24:55

He wouldn't be Hinata and Kagema wouldn't love him if he did that.

em

24:58

Yeah, and he really just has no choice but to get dragged along with his pace, as usual and then.

rainbow

25:03

So then we're going to practice and they're going to school, and they're going to practice regularly and we see Ukai tell Hinata, like you're gonna play with the B team when we do mock matches. When we do, we call them scrimmages and you're gonna play with the B team.

25:17

When we do mock matches, when we do we call them scrimmages, and you're gonna be with Suga and they you know Kagehina pass by each other and Hinata, like, has like a look on his face when he notices that he's gonna pass by Kageyama. But they don't say anything, they don't look at each other, they just pass right by and poor Yachi is like  are you guys? Uh, still friends. Are you still fighting? And Hinata's like no, we're okay.

em

25:33

Yeah, he's like don't you worry, I'm not worried. And then remember the volleyball girl captain, We'll see her again. It's been a minute, but Daichi is asking to use the girls' gym space when they're done, because so many of them are now doing individual practices. Everyone's trying to improve. Asahi is working on his jump serves and Noya is helping him in turn to work on his toss. Others are watching combination attacks, all except for Suki, who he's going home, he's going to bed.

rainbow

25:59

Yeah, Yamaguchi's going to. You know, hang out with Shimada-san and work on his jump float serve. I love that Noya wants to practice setting, so of course he goes to Asahi to be like will you spike some of these tosses? Because he's not very good at it and he needs to try and I'm sure also he is the best person to work on that with. Where is my fic or my ova about asaNoya training together? Oh, it's got to be somewhere. Somebody give it to me. I love that, and then maybe they kiss afterwards oh, no, .

em

26:31

and then so at the end of this kind of little montage, we see Hinata has started to adapt more to different kinds of serves. He's being sets, sets Someone sets to him and it's a little off, but he's able to adapt to it. And one of the kids says oh, you used to freak out every time it was a little off. And Hinata says up until now I could hit without thinking too much because of my amazing setter, aka, I didn't have to use my brain when daddy was in charge, but now I'm getting used to. I love that, but like literally, he's like okay, well, now, and this is what he needed to do, because it's not like you know, Kageyama can't be his only setter forever and he needs to get used to anything that could happen well, and that's the thing is Ukai.

rainbow

27:10

Earlier in the episode, Ukai says like you need to learn to hit sets from a lot of different people. So he has. I think it's two women probably from like the local team, like the local women's league team. There's somebody who looks like maybe like a middle school setter, and then the elementary school setter and you know, Hinata is learning how to hit all different kinds of sets, which is going to help him. Even with Karasuno, because they've got Suga, they're gonna have Noya now being able to set.

27:36

I'm sure other players are gonna have to pull off emergency sets at some point, and this is so important and I think there is a lot of discussion in the fandom. I've definitely seen people who maybe seem to not ship kagehina or maybe don't like Kageyama, who kind of like view this as like Kageyama wants to like hold Hinata back and Kageyama thinks like Hinata can only be good with Kageyama and I think it's okay for Kageyama to have thought that at one point. Yeah, the important thing is that he learns his lesson and he realizes that's not true and he lets go of that and they're able to move forward and grow together. Yeah, and I think that's beautiful and that's wonderful. Like relationships are boring if they're perfect from the beginning and they don't have anything. They have to learn.

em

28:17

Well, yeah, exactly, and we see Kageyama training this difficult toss and I actually love it because there's a moment where he misses it and he makes this scary face and Yachi kind of jumps, but then he just lets a breath out and he's like okay next, and it's all for the greater good of their quick attack.

rainbow

28:31

Yes, it is, it's literally so that he can be a better setter for.

em

28:36

Hinata. So back at Grandpa Ukai's, they are gardening together and Grandpa Ukai says he asks because they're getting close now, like in two days they're going to go to the training camp and he's asking if Nekoma is going to be there. And he's like talking about Nekomata and he says he's hard to get along with but his volleyball sense is second to none. And I said, hmm, who does this sound like? And I like how, with Furudate, all of these ships he's like personally can't stand each other Athletically.

rainbow

29:03

Soulmates, if they got along as well, then that would just be too obvious that they were in love, which I feel like we do see that with some of them, where it's like oh, you guys are real close off the court too, aren't you?

em

29:18

Oh my God, I'm thinking about Kuroken, I'm thinking about Boko Aka. So then, yeah, and then the episode wraps up with Takada. Tomorrow we go to the summer training camp.

rainbow

29:25

It's going to be a week long. They're going to. They're on summer break now they're going to take a full week Morning to night practice. Yes, and I'm very excited, and you know, going into this. You know we see where Kage Hina are at, we see where the rest of Kurosano is at, and I'm excited to talk about what happens with everybody Me too. So many good episodes, so many things are going to be so fun, so many characters we get to talk about more. I'm excited.

em

29:51

We're going to everyone's favorite pandemic comfort arc. Yes, we're going to everyone's favorite pandemic comfort arc.

rainbow

29:57

Yes, yes, this is every there. How many compilations exist out there of summer training camp arc? Is my therapy, fucking yeah.

em

30:02

Endless, probably yes.

rainbow

30:05

All right, are you ready for manga versus anime?

em

30:06

Yes, so I looked at the manga. I took a little look. See, in the manga, Tanaka describes Grandpa Ukai as the coach who commanded a murder of crows. It's given Game of Thrones with these titles Mother of Dragons, coach of the Crows, yes, but Grandpa Ukai commands it, demands it and deserves it. In the manga, Ukai explains to Kageyama because he calls Kageyama to try and find him, and he explains that he got his number from Daichi. And that's just like little detail that the anime, I guess, didn't feel was important. But I don't, I don't know, I just think that's fun. And then, so Hinata, when he's practicing, he's going up against elementary school kids, different middle school kids and also some adult women, and I noticed on one of their shirts the housewives team. So I guess that there's a team for housewives and I need a housewives AU stat.

rainbow

30:56

Oh my God, where, like, all of the players are gender bent and housewives and they play on the team together and then they all fall in love with kids. Yeah, sure, okay, that's what I was thinking. What are you? What were you thinking?

em

31:07

I'm thinking put Hinata in a apron.

rainbow

31:18

I'm thinking, I'm you thought, just as far as make Hinata a housewife.

em

31:24

I love that love that for you, and then in the manga, and I won't because I guess we'll get into spoilery zone. But we start the Suki arc okay, okay.

rainbow

31:34

So it kind of combines it a little bit more a little bit more, but I think like some stuff that's probably going to happen in the next episode or two okay, and I did want to mention you have it written here that these episodes cover chapters 82 through 84 yes, that was just a note for myself, because I was always forgetting where I was but yes, I think it's fun.

31:52

I think it's fun to like tell people like this, especially when it comes to like I know sometimes things go out of order and it'll be like, well, we're actually covering like this chapter, this chapter and then this chapter that happened earlier, kind of thing.

em

32:04

Yeah, true, I think that's fun.

rainbow

32:05

Okay, yeah, that's interesting. Thank you so much for doing that. Oh, you're welcome and it's time for our character spotlight. Oh, I'm ready. We're talking about everyone, but especially m's favorite grandpa. I don't want to do this. No more grandpa, that's too damn bad. We are talking about the one, the only, Ukai ike. Yeah, so grandpa Ukai as we as we call him. I have just a short line from the wiki, because I do feel like we get his personality pretty well in this episode Quote. He appears scary and brisk at first sight, but in reality, he is a kind person who wants to, who wants the best for his students, and I think that's true. And, yeah, like he is. Like Tanaka says, his training was really intense.

32:47

It was Spartan, I think, is what it's described as at one point. You know Kagehina loved that idea. I think you know he's the reason that the second years took a break for a while. Yes, his name, meaning his first name, means sexy, sexy grandpa, no, no, okay. So, the last name, Ukai, the family name. We talked about this when we talked about our coach, Ukai, and it basically means, like crow nurturer, very appropriate which is hilarious.

33:14

I think it's also not like a real, like a last name you would actually find for somebody in japan. Like I don't think it's used as a last name. Sounds legit to me, yeah, yeah. It sounds legit to us westerners. Yeah, . And then his first name, ike. It means first link, which I thought was interesting. Yeah, since he was the original coach. And then we have his character sheet again. It's a lot shorter  than the usual ones, just like nekomata's was last week. Yeah, but he is the former coach of the karasuno high school boys volleyball team. His age is 69, nice they did that on purpose.

em

33:48

They sure did just for you, because they know he's a sex symbol. I'm just reporting what my eyes tell me the promo needs to be.

rainbow

33:58

You thirsting over coach. And then his current worry is the prospect of losing to his grandson at arm wrestling makes him feel slightly uneasy. He's such a butch, what a big, strong man. Yeah, no, I mean he's getting older and he does have some like defined muscles for an old guy. Like I get it, you know he's, he's tight.

em

34:21

I know everybody gets it. He's got a tight, sexy little body. Oh my God, no, don't use the Naruto recall right now.

rainbow

34:30

Yeah, so that's Coach Ukai. Anything else you want to say about him other than the fact that he's hot and you want to fuck him?

em

34:36

I'm sorry if I did too much you didn't.

rainbow

34:39

I love it. Keep everything in, could you guys? Fun, we get to see him a little bit more throughout this show.

em

34:45

yeah, and he comes to one of the games and he looks so good in a flannel. I can't wait till we get to that. I'm so excited I love this that's my last thing I have to say about him, sure okay, I think that's it for coach Ukai okay, it's time for the world's favorite game.

35:02

It's who? And haikyuu. This week's scenario was brought to us by our very own rainbow. You may remember, last week I took the lead with a little bit of jjk. Well, rainbow has a hyper fixation of their own that they've been dealing with. You may have heard of it it's. It's called Danganronpa, and I'll let you take it from here.

rainbow

35:18

Danganronpa. Thank you very much.

em

35:19

All right.

rainbow

35:20

So for those of you who don't know Danganronpa, it started as a game. There's also an anime. I'm currently obsessed with it. The Game Grps on YouTube played through the first and second game. They're currently playing through the third game and I watched the first two games playthrough, loved it. I've watched  the anime. I watched Danganronpa 3 I skipped the first one, whatever Danganronpa the animation. I was like this is just the game. I've already seen this. Correct me if I'm wrong and you think I really should watch it. I'm obsessed I.

35:50

I bought Danganronpa 2 because I'm obsessed with Komahina. If there's anyone out there who also ships Komahina and you want to talk to me about it, I'd love that. I'm obsessed with Comahina. If there's anyone out there who also ships Comahina and you want to talk to me about it, I'd love that. I'm so jealous of Em because she has people to talk about JJK with and I don't have anyone to talk about Danganronpa with and it's fine. No, no, I mean, I'm really enjoying it. There's a lot of fun fics out there. I'm enjoying playing the game. I have so many of my own fic ideas in my head, but it's just really fun and it's silly and it's the game is very fan servicey, but it's also like they're very like self-aware, so I think it's really fun and the gameplay is very interesting. I play on gentle.

em

36:28

I play on the easiest easy mode you can play.

rainbow

36:30

But the thing with Danganronpa is, almost every character is some sort of ultimate. They have like a suit, like an amazing talent. They're like the super highest level of this thing, like there's, you know, the ultimate detective and the ultimate, baseball player, that kind of thing. So what I decided for who and haikyuu I was originally going to come up with what are their. I was going to come up with my own ultimate skills for them. I was having trouble with it, so I looked up the list of ultimates on the Danganronpa wiki and then I found ones that match some of the players we have here. So I'm going to go through a short list and say which ones they are. Do you have thoughts? Are you confused?

em

37:15

No, you are leading me by the hand because I know nothing, at least you knew about jjk. I feel bad. I don't know anything. It's all you, babe, let's take me away no, that's okay.

rainbow

37:24

Hopefully this is fun for anybody else out there other than me. This is like the most self-indulgent thing I've done on this podcast so far, other than making this podcast. I have people love to hear you talk. I do. They do say I have a nice voice, okay. So, starting off with Hinata, also in danganronpa 2, the main character, his name is Hinata hajime which is a combination of our very own Hinata Shouyou and Iwazumi hajime, and I love that. He's my favorite protagonist out of all all three games. I will say not just because I ship him with my other favorite character, it's fine. Nagito is a fun little freak, anyway, I think I'm gonna argue with you.

em

38:03

I have no fucking idea.

rainbow

38:04

You're gonna be like no, actually actually so,  Hinata,  ultimate pe, which means he's good at all the sports this is a kid I would not hang out with no, but we do know Hinata.

38:22

There's no way he doesn't excel at every sport he plays, absolutely with his athleticism and then for Kageyama, they don't actually have an ultimate volleyball player, but they have ultimate, like they have an ultimate tennis player and an ultimate baseball player. So I said you know what Kageyama, ultimate volleyball player? I think if I were to tell him that he would blush and say and bow and say thank you. No one deserves it more than my son. Yeah, try to come at me. You think anybody else should get that title? Go fuck yourself. I love you.

38:49

For Yachi, they did have like ultimate artist, which I feel like fit for her, but this is fully my head canon. I think Yachi is the ultimate doujinshi, because I think she is doing the best kage hina doujins in existence. You think she's drawing yaoi? I think, yeah, of course she's drawing out. She's a lesbian. What else is she doing? She's drawing yaoi and thinking about kissing girls, so that's what I think she is.

39:21

And then Kenma, who we don't see in this episode but would obviously be the ultimate gamer, and the ultimate gamer in danganronpa is Chiaki and we love her anyway. Because Kenma, or because I did Kenma, I also have to do Kuroo and he's the ultimate swindler. Yeah, that makes sense, I'm with you, he's a swindler For Kiyoko. I did the ultimate team manager because she is, that's a real person. I will say Kiyoko, very different from Nekomaru, is the ultimate team manager in Danganronpa 2. Goodbye, despair. This is the nerdiest I've ever been and this is an anime podcast. And then, finally, grandpa Ukai is the ultimate coach, and then Suga, because of his nurturing nature he is the ultimate child care specialist.

em

40:04

Oh my god, I love these titles.

rainbow

40:05

Oh my honestly and just look up danganronpa list of ultimates and read through them because they are hilarious. There's an ultimate cosplayer. There's an ultimate clairvoyant who is right 30% of the time. There's the ultimate confectioner who cooks sweets. There's the ultimate drama a person who practices the aspects of acting in theater. The ultimate fashionista. The ultimate farmer.

em

40:29

Me in Stardew Valley.

rainbow

40:32

I don't know. I feel like the ultimate farmer wouldn't struggle quite as much as you did with some of the basics. May I remind you that I reached 100%. I know I would literally. Those words were coming out of my mouth and I was like rainbow you have not even come close to finishing stardew valley on your own and M has, like she has, reached that cliffside yeah, I bumbled my way there, but I made it is all.

40:55

I'm saying, and honestly, that that is very Danganronpa, because sometimes these characters like just fall into these talents. There is one person who his talent in quotes is he is the ultimate affluent prodigy, which just means he's the ultimate heir to like a giant corporation. He's just rich, and he is the worst. Byakuya is the worst. I want his title, though. Yeah, honestly, it'd be nice to be that rich, so yeah, so that's what I came up with, I really hope you all enjoyed that  again, danganronpa, if you know it, if you love it, reach out let me know what you think hello, hello anyone.

41:31

who do you ship? Do you ship anyone? Have you played the game? What's your favorite? I just want to talk to some people all right.

em

41:39

Thank you, rainbow, for that lovely scenario. Before we get into the spoiler zone and lose some of you fools, here's our socials.

rainbow

41:47

Wow, coming real hard for the anime, only it's or the beginners I'm just kidding, I don't mean it.

em

41:53

You can find us on twitter, instagram, Tumblr and blue sky. That's fly high q pod. Fly hq pod. You can also send us an email at fly high q pod at gmailcom. Fly hq pod at gmailcom.

rainbow

42:08

And now you go through a door and you enter the spoiler zone I put things in here again you did. I really didn't have anything for this one, I just have two little things to say.

em

42:23

So one grandpa Ukai, says there's no better toss than one that the spiker can easily hit.

rainbow

42:29

I'm pretty sure Atsu says this exact same thing during the youth camp yes, well, and it's interesting because this is kind of the beginning of the like goody, two-shoes thing that Atsu calls Kageyama out for where he, like you know, Kageyama has learned it's and I will say, like Atsu is a jerk about it, but like it's, like he does, like lead Kageyama to his next evolution.

42:52

Because, like, Kageyama has to get from being the dictator king to, like, a good king. He has to get to the point where, like, he can be the king of the court without being a huge asshole and like he. But he has to go through this period of like, okay, I have to figure out what kind of sets my spikers need, and then Atsu helps him realize that. Like, okay, you know, I need to know what kind of sets the spikers need, but that doesn't always mean like I have to follow exactly what the Spikers want. Like Tsukishima can go higher, he just isn't, but I can get him there and so, yeah, I do. I do appreciate that. You brought that up. I connected the dots.

em

43:28

You sure did, I connected them. And then the other thing I'm just kind of like reiterating because I just didn't feel like I could say this earlier, but when Hinata is saying that Kageyama is an amazing guy, so I'm sure he can do it, and we were talking about that easy trust that lets them kind of separate. This is also true for the Brazil arc, because I recently saw and this is, I feel, like another thing that is widely misunderstood sometimes of like, why didn't they visit each other at all? And it's because they're dramatic and gay and because of this promise and because they are, when they're working on themselves to get better, to come together again. That's something that just happens separately and they can do it separately because of that trust that they will come together again.

rainbow

44:09

I do like that, yeah, like they don't see each other and you know that does give people opportunities for a lot of angst, whatever. But I don't think for me it's not angsty like I think they still talk to each other, I think that they stay in touch, I just think. I think for Kageyama he's like no, like I know Hinata is going out there in training and like maybe there is some part of him that knows like he doesn't need me breathing down his neck right now. He needs to go and do his own thing and he's gonna come back and he's gonna be my someone better.

em

44:34

And I think what's just a hard pill for maybe Kagehina-ists to swallow is that they're not like friends, at least not in the traditional sense. They're not those type of friends. I'm going to come visit you and hang out. Hang out. They don't hang out, they just follow a life goal together. It's a weird dynamic, but when you understand it it's very gay.

rainbow

44:55

Yeah, it is very gay. It's like they have their own, like they have their own separate lives to lead and they very much respect each other for that. But they just know, like you know, they're going to loop back around and be together again in some way and they're going to play volleyball. It's everything they do is in service to volleyball and that's what makes them work, because they both have that exact same drive and that desire, like even in a generation of monsters. They kind of stand above the rest in that regard spitting, spitting in the mic is what you're doing but yeah, I love that, and I mean, we do know that they have like conversations.

em

45:34

There's like the phone call where they talk about a manga and I think like that's that thing of like maybe they couldn't really properly be friends until they both reached that stage together. I think they were too busy of like well, I gotta improve and blah, blah blah. And then once they kind of are both at the same stage, I feel like maybe then more friendship stuff like bonding over this manga and stuff then takes place, which is why in my head canons they get together a little bit later in life.

rainbow

45:58

No, I totally agree. I think it's like, I think it's at the very least after the Jack Adler's phase or after the Jack Adler's match, maybe even not until they get to the Olympics. Yeah, like, I think that's very possible. That's what I see for them. Is there anything else that you need to say for the spoiler zone? We're about to get into Tsukishima's arc and I can't wait till next time. Fly high.
