hello everyone and welcome to fly a queer haikyuu podcast. I'm rainbow, they she and I'm m, and today we are going to be talking about season two, episode seven moonrise, moonrise.
em
00:21
This episode title is a pun, it is.
rainbow
00:23
It's very fun and we'll talk about how it's a pun. It is, it's very fun, and we'll talk about how it's a pun in just a little bit. But first we have to talk about a different anime, an anime we've already mentioned.
em
00:33
Yeah, we have to kind of do a self-correction here, because we've been talking about the new anime on the block, the BL Twilight, out of Focus. So last week we were talking about the last couple that was appearing in the show and we thought that they were just a red herring and that the pink pony one and the goth one were going to get together. Well, we finished, or actually I don't think it's over.
rainbow
00:55
No, we kind of got to the like end of their story, their arc, and you know.
em
01:02
We were wrong. The goth was not the end game. He ended up with this film, bro, and that was fine. We're not like mad about it. It wouldn't have been my choice perhaps.
rainbow
01:12
Yeah, I definitely was thinking about like a fan kick fanfic with like a time skip element to it, where you know the couple that got together, you know they've things have fallen apart and the goth and the pink haired reconnect and it's a beautiful getting together story. This is what fan fiction is, for, despite our you know incorrect prediction, still a great show, still fun to watch. For some reason I thought it was only going to be 10 episodes. Yeah, but apparently there's going to be more episodes, so I think it's going to be the usual 12.
01:44
going to be more episodes, so I think it's going to be the usual 12. I think so too, and you know, I think that makes sense.
em
01:47
I think that times out pretty well. That's all we have for chit chat. We have a little bit of housekeeping, we have a little bit of a shout out.
rainbow
01:51
If you want to take it away, yes, shout out to our listener madeline t t as in the letter, not t as in the drink, although that would be a cool name, that would be a really good drag name, madeline t madeline loves TsukiYama, and so we thought this would be a great episode, because we've got definitely a lot of Tsukishima in this episode yes but also like there is some TsukiYama.
02:11
We see a lot of Yamaguchi concerned about his best friend, and I love it. But before we get into the TsukiYama of it all, I also want to talk about a Tumblr post that was shared with us by somebody on Tumblr. Obviously, thank you to Crossroad of Interests for sharing this with us. This is a post from another Tumblr user. This post it looks like there was some confusion from people who'd read the manga when season two, episode five, came out, because the anime subtitles say it wasn't that. He was the first friend I'd made, he was a partner.
02:49
The manga, or the manga, is translated as because I'd had a feeling that we wouldn't be quote-unquote friends at first, but we could be partners, and so the original poster did some research and found the original Japanese and consulted their Japanese teacher, who did some thinking about it and came to the conclusion that what he actually says is a mix of phrases from the subtitles and the manga translation. If you get the gist of Hinata's words, it's. It was the first time I felt like I had a partner, not a friend. They asked their Japanese friend to help them out and she had no context for the sentence, so originally translated it, as it's the first time I felt that I could make a soulmate, not just a friend. No, that's the context, which is actually the context which I love.
03:37
and then when. And then the original poster said, when they explained it to her, she said that partner is definitely better, but I mean, I think it's still right. I think we all know what Hinata means when he says partner there. So I thought that was really interesting. Thanks again to Crossroad of Interest for sharing that with us. That's amazing.
03:59
And as always, if anyone ever has anything like this, any extra stuff, any posts, any articles, please feel free to send us any and all of it, because we want to see it and we will absolutely talk about it with all of our listeners. Okay, anything else for housekeeping? No, I'm all good. All right, are you ready to do your recap?
em
04:19
Yes, all right, count me down. Yes, three, two, one. It's the revolution of the crows, as everyone on Karasuno strives to get stronger, with the exception of one tall blonde with a major attitude problem. Tsukishima lacks serious passion as he turns down practice opportunities and goes to bed early like a bitch. Does Suki simply lack drive, or is there something more going on that's discouraging him to give it his all? It's time to shit or get off the pot. In this week's episode, moonrise.
rainbow
04:48
I love that you're just reading Tsukishima. To filth, here I'm picking on the poor boy.
em
04:53
He has some trauma and I am being a bit of a dick, but no, I love my boy so I can do that.
rainbow
05:00
Okay. So, starting off this episode, we get to see the moon in the sky like a big pizza pie. That's Amore, just kidding. It's actually not a big pizza pie, because it is a half moon. I noted which I thought was interesting. No, it's not a half moon, it's a quarter moon. It's half of the moon. So we see it at a quarter moon, which I thought was fun.
em
05:26
And we see the moon because they they are leaving in the middle of the night.
rainbow
05:27
Yes, and Hinata is easily excited about things and this one is something that excites him and I do kind of relate to Hinata here, actually because leaving in the middle of the night for a field trip is fun and exciting.
em
05:36
It is no, he's right.
rainbow
05:37
We get Suga worried about Kagehina.
em
05:39
Yeah, this does make me kind of sad, like we talked a lot in the last episode about how this is their whole thing. You know they're not really talking because they're training on their own, but it does bum me out to see like Kageyama is off to his side and Hinata is with everyone else. Also, as someone who is such an introvert and often dates the social butterfly, once that butterfly is gone, you're kind of back to being on your own.
rainbow
06:05
So I'm just like, oh, like, like, why can't they just like, just be normal and talk to each other while you practice alone? It's part of them being so fucking dramatic. That's what it is. It's because they're drama queens and they're like no, we can't. We can't reconnect until we're better, until we can like be together again the way we once were, and it's like shut the fuck up just shut up and just be friends with each other.
06:22
And then Tsukishima looks at them with a look of I couldn't quite decipher. I couldn't tell if it was disdain, if it was apathy, it just was a look of like he probably doesn't think anything to do with volleyball is important enough to fight and stop speaking with your best friend over.
em
06:38
Yes that's what I saw too, and I also just saw this as a shot that's kind of preparing us for this to be a Suki episode. We are changing gears. The last two episodes were all about this big fight, and now we're kind of focusing on Suki a little bit. I feel like that shot was really establishing that, yeah, so you know they.
rainbow
06:54
The next morning they have arrived bright and early for the training camp in not quite Tokyo. We'll talk about that in a second. But Hinata does the same thing that Tanaka and Noya did and he's like oh my gosh, you know, is the sky tree around here, is that Tokyo tower? Like?
em
07:10
and poor Kenma is so confused he's like no, that's just a regular transmission tower and Kurosu is like teasing Daichi and is like I've heard this conversation before and I love how Daichi's defense is like yeah, they'd all look like that to us country bumpkins and Suga's like you want to say it like that yeah, honestly.
rainbow
07:29
So he was like okay, yeah, sure, make us make us seem like we're backwards fools. And somebody mentions that they are in Satama, which I looked up, and it is a prefecture just outside of Tokyo. It's about an hour away they're at the Shinzen school for this training camp yes, and I guess they always do the training camp at Shinsen because it's cooler there.
em
07:49
Yeah, we jump right in and the first game of the camp is against Fugurodani. Right away we have Kageyama trying his new toss and it doesn't work. It's a little short. It feels differently in a match rather than when he's just practicing.
rainbow
08:09
But Hin practicing, but Hinata immediately clocks that there's something different about what he's doing. I took a picture of the look on Hinata's face after this because he is just so, he's like almost in awe. And it's cute because Kageyama's all embarrassed that it didn't work and like Tanaka like makes fun of him a little bit and then like Hinata or Kageyama still with like a little blush on his face, kind of like, looks at Hinata like I'm like my toss didn't work, like what's this rank? Gonna think blah, blah, blah, and meanwhile Hinata is just like oh, oh, he, he changed the toss yeah, for me you guys watching like yeah, I bet you wouldn't notice that, wouldn't you, gay boy?
08:33
and I do. I have a. I have a couple notes from before we get into the game. First of all, lev runs up to Hinata to ask him if he grew any, and Kenma is just. I love Kenma for this because he's like shut up, lev, shut up. And then Lev brags about getting two centimeters taller or whatever.
08:48
You can see Yachi worried about Kagehina, I think, like right before the game, like she can tell they're not really talking, they're not interacting and she's so clearly worried. But yeah, then they get in this game and they're on the same team, because at the end of the last training camp they were on or not the training camp, but while they were practicing at Karasuno, Hinata had been practicing with somebody else or with the other team, the B team. But they do say at some point, I think Ukai says something of like hey, we're going to be switching out a lot of players, so get ready for that. And so Hinata and Kageyama are giving these chances to try, but they're failing. And but they're failing and we see another attempted freak quick that goes too long this time instead of too short.
09:28
And then Hinata I love this so much because it's one of those Hinata sees the ball and you can see the reflection of the ball in his eye, and then he gets it with his left hand and it just barely gets over the net. Yeah, and he's so focused because the ball is becoming an extension of his own body.
em
09:43
Yeah, and even Suga is like oh, he used to panic whenever it was slightly off. So then, and you know, Hinata falls to the ground, but as he stands back up, Kageyama is now staring at him in awe, and they're both looking at each other, thinking he's different now.
rainbow
09:55
And you best believe, I took pictures of the looks on their faces because they're both just so in awe of each other and it's yeah, and awe of each other, and it's yeah. And, like you know, and that's something. I don't think Kageyama really thought Hinata would get to this place.
em
10:10
I think he really was underestimating him and maybe doubting him, it's like you guys could easily know about what you've been working on if you just, like, spoke to each other about it. But no, you're right, this is way more romantic actually. Yeah, like, this is just the romantic way to do it, like what any other normal partner would be like. You know what? I'm gonna work on my tosses and do this. Okay, that's great, I've been working on this. No, why would we talk to each other about this? All important toss.
rainbow
10:34
It's like they can't bring themselves to talk to each other until they're like ready, ready yeah until they're, yeah, they're, they're, they're being very slow burn about it and but you know what slow burns are good. All that build-up is gonna be worth it. Yeah, it's the tension, it's so good. The tension is good. I love when the pacing is good, the payoff, it's just nice and that's what. And kagehina knows this, yes, and that's why they're doing it this way.
em
11:00
But kagehina aren't the only ones on karasuno changing things up oh, and also I just want to say Nakamata's reaction right out because their look that they share. And then Nakamata immediately is like giggling at it because he sees what's happening. They are trying to be stronger and change things up.
rainbow
11:14
Yes, gay, recognize gay, he knows what's happening. Yeah, they're all trying new things but none of it is working. Asahi's serve serve Noya's set I love Noya's face when he misses that set um. And then the synchronized attack with shinsen clocks that they try to synchronized attack, but none of it is working. I think it's.
11:32
The assistant coach for Nekoma is like wow, karasuno is not doing so good, like nothing is working out and Nekomata is just enjoying the hell out of it. Because he said he knows what's up. He says they're omnivores who use the strengths of all those around them to survive. Yeah, with one exception, except for Tsukishima. Yes, karasuno loses their practice match. Yeah, and we find out that the you know, the teams who lose always get punished in the. At the other training camp it was the diving drills, but at this training camp, because it's at shinzen, they have to do a run uphill, kind of sucks that the team who loses gets punished. That feels weird just on its own. But If somebody made me run up a hill, I would quit Like I'm not Kate Bush, I'm not running up that hill, are you fucking kidding me? Anyway, every time I see that it just makes me want to fall down and cry. I hate running so much, and running up a hill sounds like a nightmare, and I'm honestly with Tsukishima on this one Don't do it.
em
12:24
Oh, this is like we are not athletes, because, yeah, all these losers got to get stronger, so they got to run up that hill, I guess.
rainbow
12:30
So you know, all right, whatever, and then we're doing afternoon practice or after the after dark practice, I think, yeah, I think it's like individual practice, where people can do. They can do whatever they want it's free practice.
em
12:42
Yeah, no, the games are done for the day and it's like the time between then and like dinner time, and so they can kind of just do whatever they want.
rainbow
12:47
Yeah, and so Tsukishima is the only one who is not interested in doing any practice. Does Yamaguchi even say something to him? Is this when we get that?
em
12:56
He says like I'm going to practice my serves, and he's like I'm going to bed. I'm taking a bath and going to bed and, honestly, I see you baby.
rainbow
13:03
It's like. I totally get it Like he's. He's hungry, he's tired.
em
13:13
He's sweaty, he's gross and he's just not on this. If we just gomberay it, we will make it to the top. He's like all this excess practice is only going to do so much. He's very not like into this whole thing he does not believe it.
rainbow
13:19
But then boKuroo comes along and changes his mind.
em
13:22
Tsukishima is walking back and he passes by and I call them so. If you watch bob's burgers, you'll get this reference. B-fos are boys from other schools and I call them S-fos senpai from other schools. I saw that in your notes and I love it. They beckon to Tsukishima. They're like you're tall, Will you block for us?
rainbow
13:42
Yeah, they're like come block for us. And Tsukishima's like why don't you ask people from your own team to do that and do that? And then Akaashi walks up and is like no, Bokuto's the worst, he just keeps going forever and nobody wants to practice with him.
em
13:54
Funny enough, Akaashi's there practicing with Bokuto, so I'm so glad you said that and Akaashi, you're not fooling me, because he doesn't, and we'll see like two more times. He does not miss an opportunity to tear Bokuto down, because Kuroo then points out hey, like this guy might not look like it, but he's like one of the top five aces in the country, so he's good practice. And Akaashi is like it's too bad, he's not top three.
rainbow
14:15
Yeah, he's like I think he's still bummed, that he's not in top three. And Bokuto's like why did you have to set me up just to tear me down like that? Exactly, which I love.
em
14:33
And Kuro gets Tsukishima to play by. Like, if you're a middle blocker, shouldn't you practice blocking? So and I just want to say again, like we've kind of talked about KurooTsukki, it's not for me just because I love the main ships a lot, I love TsukiYama and I love Kurooken. So I'm not really that into KurooTsukki but I really do like their dynamic as it is in the show. I feel like Kuroo is like the perfect senpai for Tsukki.
rainbow
14:48
He has that same kind of like undercutting sass that I feel like Tsukki can understand it's because he's I think he's also a jerk in a fun way and he's he's pretty cocky, yeah, and so with that, and I think he just he pushes the exact right buttons that Tsukki needs to fuel his competitive side, yes, and to to fuel him into playing until he presses the wrong button, yes, which we do see that, but I don't think we get there yet. We're done, yeah, I think. First, before we after, we kind of see this little scene where Tsukishima is like all right, fine, I'll practice with you. Is this where we see Yachi desperately trying to get kagehina?
em
15:23
oh, yeah, we switch back, and so kagehina are both separately anxious because they weren't really able to sync up at all during the day, and Yachi can see that and she, like dogs, is like, do you want to practice the quick? How about a ball?
rainbow
15:38
she's just trying to kind of edge them on and they go for it yeah, well, in the dub, Hinata says like the way she's asking is kind of pushy, because she really is like it's this, like it's like come on, you guys haven't talked, you guys haven't hung out, you guys aren't playing together. Do you want to? Do you want to, I'll toss them for you I'll throw the ball.
em
15:52
It's really funny in the sub and in the manga if they compare her to like an old guy trying to get her his drinking buddies to join him yeah, that is what.
rainbow
16:02
yeah, that's Nekomata trying to convince the other coaches to keep drinking with him, and then we get. I think this is where we get to the commercial break right, and I and I have to say I really have a special place in my heart for the Boko Ako ones, because this is the one where Bokuto does a really good serve and Akaashi is just like messing with the ball cart and like doesn't notice, and Bokuto immediately turns to Akaashi to be like in a like, a like oh, did you see that kind of way? And Akaashi is like what happened?
em
16:32
And Bokuto's so mad that Akaashi didn't see his amazing serve. And Akaashi keeps Bokuto humble. We get back to them and obviously Bokuto is slamming past Suki's blocks and really cheering himself on and Akaashi's like, yeah, you got it past one blocker cool.
rainbow
16:42
He's like oh, you are amazing, you beat a single blocker. I Akaashi is. I love him and listen. We cannot get into spoilers. I will talk about stuff in the spoiler zone, but like it's so interesting the way Akaashi and Bokuto interact at the beginning I'm, I'm so excited.
em
17:05
And then Kuroo joins Tsukki. On his side he was teaching lev how to do things, but lev finally like passed out, so he joins Tsukki and we get to see.
rainbow
17:14
So we get to see Kuroo blocking Bokuto, which I love because Kuroo has an evil little fucking grin, because like Bokuto is about to try to go do a cross and Kuroo notices and just like swipes his hands over. Yeah, oh, and I have it in my notes Kuro evil grin. I am not okay because I'm not. I love that he's a little demon.
em
17:35
And then BoKuroo kind of gets a shot in at Suki. He's like you're smart and calm, but your blocks are really weak. I'll rip your arms off if you're not careful.
rainbow
17:44
Yeah, and then is this no-transcript.
em
17:54
And Kuro's like well, if you take that approach, then the shrimpy's gonna totally decimate you and they're all like bantering right. But Suki's kind of quiet after this and you can tell that Kuro struck a nerve and Suki's like well, there's no way to get out and he's like all right, bye. And Kuro's like oh wait. And Akaashi's like I think you really hit a nerve. What's really interesting is so Kuro says well, I'm surprised at that. Like yeah, the shrimpy has a lot of talent, but he is a newbie and still sucks. Meanwhile, Tsukishima's smart and tall. To think that he doesn't see him as an equal, he doesn't even see him as the same level, is pretty shocking.
rainbow
18:36
Like basically, Kuroo did not know the depths of Tsukishima's inferiority complex and because that's the thing, because Tsukishima does not think he's good enough to beat Hinata, and Kuroo didn't understand that. And he doesn't really understand why Tsukishima thinks that way. He's like, he believes he's like you could totally beat Hinata if you just tried. So then Tsukishima is walking away and you can tell he's mad and he's thinking about how hard everyone is practicing.
em
19:00
It's probably gonna feel so weird to have this attitude, but like you're surrounded by all these try-hards, he probably feels kind of like a piece of shit.
rainbow
19:07
Well, yeah, and you can just tell that he's having this like issue. He's like why are they trying so hard? Why do they care so much? We see a brief flash of memory Tsukishima walking by somebody's bedroom, somebody else with blonde hair who is like on the ground crying, and he thinks to himself why is everyone trying so hard? It's just going to hurt you in the end.
em
19:27
It's because you put so much into it that you suffer later, and so that's so.
rainbow
19:31
Tsukishima is finally getting to go take a bath and go to bed. And then we go to the next day and they're practicing some more, and then it's watermelon time.
em
19:38
You are skipping over great Noya senpai content. You're right, you're right, you're right.
rainbow
19:42
Okay.
em
19:43
No, just in the next morning they're having breakfast in Noya and I just love how he really does seem to take care of Tsukishima especially. He's like you need to eat your fill and then so he's a little shit and is like well, your stomach's big.
rainbow
19:53
At least they're practicing for the day and they're having watermelon, yes, and, and Tsukishima only has one piece of watermelon because, again, he's, he cares so little, he's that he, he isn't training hard enough to even need to eat more food, which is crazy, because watermelon is like eating water. Yeah, absolutely. Oh, my god, now I really want watermelon. But I do, and I kind of love again, because Haikyuu has such has that important connection to food, where, like you're even seeing it like tied with Tsukishima, where, like he eats so little because he tries so little You're so smart, babe.
em
20:28
And then we see Asahi know he noticed it, he knows that Tsukishima is kind of going through, oh no, no, because Kuroo goes up to Daichi and apologizes we get our first hints to the Tsukki background story because tanaka then remembers a conversation he had with his sister where she asked like oh, there was a guy named Tsukishima when I was at school, when the little giant was playing, that was tall, hmm, who could it be?
rainbow
20:48
Yeah, and I think it's so funny when they talk about Tsukishima, tanaka like has like a look on his face he doesn't like him, he doesn't like him. And I get it because Tsukishima is such a jerk and Tanaka does not suffer fools.
em
21:06
No. So Tsukkii is unfortunately slacking so hard that he's close to being benched. Ukai and Takeda are kind of talking about him off to the sidelines and Ukai says you know, we're skipping over Asahi and Tsukki oh, I have nothing written for that, so go ahead okay yeah.
rainbow
21:21
So then, we see karasuno. They keep losing and losing over and over again and they keep having to run up that hill. just like kate bush, they keep having to run up that hill. just like Kate Bush, they keep having to run up the hill over and over again. And then we see them all coming back down and TsukiYama are running together and they're out of breath and they're tired. And then Asahi holds out water bottles for them and so they take their little break together.
21:40
And I just think Asahi is being such a good senpai here, because Karasuno is full of great senpai, like talking to Yamaguchi first, and I think he's doing this in a really like good way. I kind of didn't expect this of Asahi, for him to have such like tact and to be so smooth with this, because he starts with Yamaguchi and he's like hey, you know, it seems like you're working on your serve, you're getting better on it, that's great. And then he kind of shifts over to Tsukishima and it's just kind of talking to him about blocking, you know, and they're talking about how they are both rivals, for Hinata, and Tsukishima points out you know, Hinata wants to be the ace. Aren't you afraid he's gonna overtake you and Asahi, he understands what Tsukishima is going through and he gives him a different perspective where he's like, well, yeah, I mean Hinata can try, but like I'm not gonna let him, you know, like I'm not just gonna let him overtake me, like that I'm going to work hard too and I'm gonna do what I need to do.
22:25
and you know, Tsukishima this doesn't immediately change his mind or anything, but I think you can tell he's like chewing on that and he's he's really accepting that. And so then we get back into the game and we see Ukai and Takeda talking about him, and I like what Ukai says about Tsukishima in the dub. He says he passes the test but never aims for a perfect score. so, yeah, so Tsukkii risks losing his spot as a starter if he doesn't start trying. And I do wonder what, how he would feel, how he would react to that if it actually happens. Like what, what do you think that might?
em
22:56
be. Well, it's either gonna be. At this point, I actually think it would be more self-fulfilling prophecy of him being like yeah I knew it.
rainbow
23:04
He'd be like yeah, I knew it, I'm not as good as Hinata. You know you, I'll never be as good.
em
23:08
You seem to think that and it really is such a waste that you know he does like they all are commenting. He has the height and he's smart, like if you just tried a little bit you'd be very strong and really make a difference on the team, and we do know that he is pretty capable because he, you know, he is a pretty good blocker all things considered, but he just he isn't trying hard enough.
rainbow
23:29
And then I love this moment with Asahi and Hinata, where we see, you know, the ball is going to be set and Hinata like licks his lips and he's like ready to go, but then he feels like a presence and he looks over and is Asahi, asserting his dominance as the ace.
em
23:47
Yep, we both wrote that same note separately. Yes, yeah, I guess like he just has such a strong aura that Hinata just backs off and lets him go and then like Kiyoko kind of says like oh OK, I guess I don't have to be worried, there's not going to be like a struggle for power, exactly, exactly.
rainbow
24:02
And you know, I think Asahi goes for the ball and he spikes it and everything, but they still lose that game because I think they've lost every practice match they've played so far in this training camp yeah.
em
24:12
Noya's like I could do 10 more of these drills, and Suki's like what if we just won?
rainbow
24:17
exactly, and so I think this is where they're running up the hill and Tsukishima like isn't able to finish, he like stops halfway and he tells Yamaguchi to you know, go on without him and I.
em
24:28
This is manga versus anime, but I'm sprinkling it in here because I don't think he really phrases it quite this way. In the anime he's just saying I'm gonna go on ahead, but in the manga, Yamaguchi says to Tsukki like I'll meet you at the top, and then there's like a close-up on Tsukki who? Might not make it to the top with his team if he doesn't whip it into shape.
rainbow
24:46
Absolutely. And he has a chance to whip it into shape because the, you know, after they're done with their practice matches, it's time for individual practice again, and Bokuto invites Tsukishima to practice with them and he's like, hey, come on, let's do some blocks. And this is a great dub moment, because Tsukishima is like oh, no, thanks. And Bokuto is like hey, carl, and then, before he gets a chance to say anything, Carl's like shut up, Bokuto. He's like you didn't even hear what I was going to say, and that's. I just love that moment. It's in a lot of compilations and Hinata like notices that Bokuto is asking Tsukishima and immediately is jealous. And then, like Tsukishima declines and Hinata can't understand why and he's like why, what? Understand why? And he's like why, what are you doing? Like the Fukurodani? Do you have something against Fukurodani? He's ace. Like he just asked to practice with you and you said no and Yamaguchi asks basically for boyfriend advice from Hinata.
em
25:37
He says what would you say to Tsukishima right now?
rainbow
25:39
I think it's interesting what Hinata says. He's like I wouldn't say anything to him, you know, because I think, like in the dub, the way he phrases it, Yamaguchi does is he says like what would you say to Tsukishima to like get him to practice with you like you do with Kageyama and Yachi, and I have something to say about that, which is another manga versus anime, but I want to talk about it now.
em
25:57
In the episode he just says like you did with Kageyama and Yachi, but in the manga it shows the moments he's talking about specifically, and it's the I'm here and the villager bee can fight too, which are both huge moments of growth for those characters that were helped along by Hinata.
rainbow
26:12
Yamaguchi wants to say something just as powerful to get through to Tsukishima yes, and I think Hinata like I like how he turns it around on Yamaguchi because he says like I don't even know if Tsukishima even likes volleyball, like he's like I'm not gonna try asking him to play with me or try to like hype him up if it seems like he doesn't even care about this. And then he turns it back around on Yamaguchi and he says well, what would you say to him?
em
26:37
yeah, which is Yamaguchi, is probably the only person who has a clue as to what's really going on underneath.
rainbow
26:44
You know, tTsukki's lack of drive, yeah well, and because Yamaguchi says he's like Tsukishima does like volleyball, he wouldn't have started playing if he didn't. And you know, I think Hinata probably recognizes that Yamaguchi is the person who needs to talk to Tsukki shima. Yeah, and then that's the end of the episode. I think we get Yamaguchi like looking back out the gym door at Tsukki shima or like you know where Tsukkiima just left from, and then that's the end of episode. Baby, that's Dick Wolf, that's Dick.
em
27:10
Wolf. So then, for manga versus anime. I just had that main note about Yamaguchi, and the only other thing is just this very tiny thing which is in the manga Takanoe drives them to the training camp.
rainbow
27:21
Oh, that's so interesting. Maybe they just couldn't get the voice actor for that day or didn't want to pay him.
em
27:25
Didn't want to draw him all that stuff. Yeah, and Ukai stole his line of don't be mad at me if I pass out, or something like that.
rainbow
27:32
And I do have a question about that, because that's at the very beginning of the episode. Takeda is like OK, you know, coach, you cannot. Ukai and I are going to take turns driving. And Ukai says like I'm sorry if I pass out. And I'm like does he mean I'm sorry if I fall asleep while I'm driving, sorry if you die? Yeah, because that's as if it's my fault. Yeah, it's like I'm sorry. You don't need to tell a bus full of teenagers that you might fall asleep while they're driving. they might go home and tell their parents and then you're gonna be in a lot of trouble. Yeah, really, I don't know.
em
28:00
Maybe, maybe things are a little bit chiller in Japan, I don't know but yeah, that for manga versus anime, this coverage chapter is 85 to 87.
rainbow
28:09
All righty, very cool. Well, thank you for that insight. I love knowing that that's a little bit different in the manga. I think that's a little bit more powerful and I mean, I'm shocked. Animes normally never miss an opportunity to show a flashback of something that's already happened, so it's amazing they didn't. But I think it's time to move on.
28:28
Yes, character spotlight, who are we doing today? We're talking about the one, the only, the ace of Fukurodani, Bokuto Katarou. That's right. Oh, we love him. All right.
28:42
So I have a little bit of a note from about his personality. That's from the wiki and it says, quote he has a playful, friendly, bombastic and childlike personality and is described by his team as having mood swings. Because of this, he is at times described as being simple-minded. His personality is very compatible that he gets along with many people, similar to Hinata. Bokuto can at times be oblivious of other people's discomfort, seen with his interactions with Tsukishima, but at times he is also shown to be kind. Hmm, yeah, that's Bokuto for you, and we're gonna talk about his name meaning his last.
29:16
His family name is Bokuto, which, the kanji combined, means horned owl, and if you look at, yeah, he looks like a horned owl and he looks like listen, if you haven't done it already, and I probably will do this when I do the episode description I'll do a little horned owl and he looks like listen, if you haven't done it already, and I probably will do this when I do the episode description I'll do a little horned owl next to Bokuto so you can see the comparison, if you haven't seen it already. So if you and his name is made up of two kanji, and individually the kanji literally mean tree and rabbit, but when you combine them together as one word, it means horned owl. So I thought that was interesting. And then his name, his given name, is Kataro. It's a very common masculine name. The middle kanji, the middle character, is common usage, means thick or big. Well, he, is a himbo.
30:05
Yeah, and then the last character simply means son, and then I feel like I've seen that his name means star, but I am not seeing that here, so maybe that's not true.
em
30:14
I like on his character sheet. He is too big for the sheet.
rainbow
30:18
Oh no, I had to crop it to make it fit the page. Oh well, he's very big, is the point. Yeah, he is big. He's one of the characters who, his little doodle takes up the majority of the page, and he is big in both size and personality. So, moving on to his character sheet, he goes to Fukurodani Academy. He is the volleyball team captain. He is a third year in class one and I can only assume that class one is in at Fukurodani academy is similar to class one at karasuno not quite as smart which is okay because he's got amazing game sense. His position is wing spiker and he, of course, is the ace. His height is 186.3 centimeters, which is about six foot give or take, and then his birthday is september 20th, so actually coming up pretty soon after this recording this is like a cuspy.
em
31:11
I don't know what it officially is, but that's between virgo and libra okay, and how do you?
rainbow
31:16
what do you? What do you think it's an interesting combination? Yeah, because virgo is an earth sign.
em
31:22
Yes, virgo's earth libra is air and virgo. I love virgo. Baby, if you're listening, sage coco I love you I love virgos. They've always been my best friends growing up. But they're they're stereotypically known to be like perfectionists and, very organized and stuff like that, but that's not always the case, but they are bad bitches. And then libras I'm a fucking libra I'm a fucking.
rainbow
31:44
Oh my gosh. We were talking about a horse. We're talking about everybody's sign on like a work call thing, and people were saying Libra and I was like I'm so mad that I can't say I'm a fucking Libra right now, because this is work. I like that his favorite food is barbecue. Yes, with two exclamation points he loves barbecue, and then his current concern. How do you spell concern?
em
32:05
he might be the stupidest one, yet I love Bukuto so much he looks powerful.
rainbow
32:09
Though those parameters yeah, let's talk about these parameters, because his intelligence and his technique are both threes. I think it's interesting that his technique is only a three. That doesn't make a lot of sense to me, but okay. And then his speed and his jumping are both fours and his power and stamina are five. So it's no joke, his stats like he he's, he's a threat for sure. So yeah, that's Bokuto, love him. Can't wait to talk about him more. You know, I mentioned in the personality thing his mood swings, which we don't necessarily see too much in this episode.
32:40
But we will see it, see it soon, and I'm very excited he's a fan favorite, and there's a reason yeah, absolutely, he's one of my favorites and, yeah, we'll get to talk about more about him and Akaashi and Fukurodani as a whole.
em
32:58
Yes, yes, more for them, even in the next episode. So all right. Now, moving on to the world's favorite game, it's who in Haikyuu. This week's scenario was brought to us by the one and only Gemworld.
rainbow
33:09
What other anime would they work well in? Yeah, and so I didn't.
em
33:10
I forgot to write down the characters, but we mainly see in this one Hinata, obviously, TsukiYama are both, and Kuroo and Bokuto and Akaashi. I'm so excited we get to talk about all these new people finally. Yes, season one is so limiting. Yes, we're really getting to see all these BFOS, these boys from other schools. There's nothing more enchanting than a BFO when you're a middle school girl oh my god, a boy from another school I've never seen him before.
rainbow
33:32
He's new. Yeah, so we're gonna talk about Hinata Kageyama, Tsukishima, Yamaguchi, Bokuto, Akaashi Kuroo and Yachi he does hard because he's such a main character, he could be anywhere yeah, I feel like you could put him in like you could put him in really any shonen anime.
em
33:47
Yeah he would do well in naruto, my hero.
rainbow
33:50
Yeah, he would be very interesting. I think it would be interesting to see. I did think about, I thought it would be fun to do like I like. What if you put, like you switched main characters, like, imagine switching like deku and Hinata, which and any of the ones from the battle anime getting switched with Hinata they'd be like all I have to do is play volleyball, nobody's going to die. I don't have to destroy my body, mind and heart and soul. I don't have to kill anybody.
em
34:17
I'm putting him on Yuri on ice because I think he'd look beautiful on the ice.
rainbow
34:20
Oh my, god, I would love him. He would be well. He and Rush and Yuri would get along so well. Tsukishima, I don't know, I could see him. I could honestly see him being in. No, hear me out. I could see him being in like a shounen anime where it's like a reverse harem and he's like the jerky guy Like he's giving Kyoya from Oran High School Club. He's giving the like tsundere love interest school host club.
em
34:46
He's giving the like tsundere love interest. I could really see Tsukki on sake sake k. Oh yeah, okay, yeah, that was a horrible ara ara, sorry, okay, Yamaguchi, he's just. I could really see him in a slice of life anime definitely I could see him as like an office worker.
rainbow
35:00
I could see him in oh, what was the? Um? Uh, oh Magic. I could see him being like one of the people in Cherry Magic.
em
35:06
he is so in Cherry Magic. Yeah, absolutely, I could see BoKuroo in another, just intense like sports anime, like the soccer one or the basketball one.
rainbow
35:16
Yeah, I could see him, that I could also see him being in. He kind of reminds me of the guy from Jujutsu Kaisen who asks everybody what their type is.
em
35:27
Yes, oh, my god. Wait, put Bokuto in Jujutsu Kaisen right now. I want to see how he does. I would love that, yeah.
rainbow
35:32
He'd be like the fun, like happy-go-lucky character who has like a really intense power. Make Akaashi Kakashi from Naruto. Oh my god, wait, someone make Akaashi Kakashi. I'm sure that's out there somewhere. That, yeah, it's definitely. And he would look great with that little mask on. no, I think Akaashi would be good in like something like erased, that one like thriller mystery anime, like I could see him as like a detective. I could see him in like one of those kinds of like intense, you know, mystery, you know we got to figure things out, kind of thing Kuroo.
em
36:05
I could see him in bungo stray dogs. What would Yachi be in?
rainbow
36:08
Yachi. I want to give her like a slice of, like kind I. I want to give her the kind of like a slice of life, maybe coming of age kind of thing. I want to give her. Oh, I want to give her like a yuri coming out manga, where she's a little closeted lesbian who falls in love with her senpai. Yeah, we'll just give her her own anime?
36:30
Yeah, absolutely yeah. And anybody who has any other thoughts about what? If you have, like a specific anime or a specific kind of anime, a specific genre you think a character would work in, let us know Again. Even characters we didn't talk about today, we want to hear it. I think it'd be really fun.
em
36:46
Yeah, thank you, general. This was a fun one to do Before we go to the spoiler zone and lose some of you. You can find us on our socials at flyhqpod, that's F-L-Y-H-Q-P-O-D. We're on Twitter, instagram, tumblr and Blue Sky. You can also send pod at gmail dot com. That's flyhqpod at gmail dot com. Now you go through a door and it's a special door. It's the door to the spoiler zone. I just wanted to say when Ukai talks to Yamaguchi and Hinata about the servant block, he mentions first of all that it's like one of the most best moves after a service ace and that is what will eventually become suukiyama's weapon is the serving block.
rainbow
37:25
Yes, the spear and the shield, yes, yes, I love it. And then we have another note about what would you say to Tsukishima.
em
37:35
When Hinata asks him that and he looks back and stuff and Tsukkii is walking that similar walkway where they're going to have that confrontation about pride. Yes, oh, where?
rainbow
37:44
he grabs him by the the collar of his shirt and shakes some sense into him. You ever grab your best friend by the collar under the moonlight and say all you need is pride it's not gay at all, but I wanted to talk a little bit about the difference between Tsukishima here and Tsukishima in the time skip because, as as of right now, like you cannot imagine Tsukishima going pro, being in like a being in, like the second tier league and like trying so hard like Kagehina, really give him his drive and he really is like he.
38:15
He wants to beat them. And that all starts here. And then I just wanted to mention that BokuAka. You know we see Akaashi talking a lot of shit about Bokuto and keeping him humble, but that's all to mask the fact that he a lot of shit about Bokuto and keeping him humble, but that's all to mask the fact that he is fucking in love with Bokuto and thinks of him as a star and is obsessed with him in so many ways. And it's he's like yeah, Bokuto's the worst. Nobody ever wants to practice with him, except for me because I'm his boyfriend. Anyway, we have a lot to talk about with BokuAka. I hope they make an OVA out of that FuKuroo Donnie match that we have not gotten to see, because I want it. We'll talk about if we don't get an OVA by the time we're caught up with this podcast. We're just going to talk about that, those manga panels.
em
38:53
Akaashi is the fakest I don't give a fucker I've ever seen in my life. He's like gatekeeping. He's trying. He's doing that thing where he's trying to make people not realize how great Bokuto is, so they can keep it to themselves.
rainbow
39:04
I need like a toxic BokuAka from high school, where Akaashi is like people know that they're friends and so girls try to like get Akaashi to help him confess, and he is telling them heinous lies about Bokuto to make them not want him.
em
39:17
Like.
rainbow
39:18
I love BokuAka so much. They are one of my favorite ships. I'm so glad they're here yeah.
em
39:24
All right. Well, next week we're gonna have a little bit more of Tsukki. We're gonna see what the dealio is there, and then we'll get back to kagehina. Can they fix it, or do they just have to keep being dramatic and gay until next time? Everyone fly high.
