hello everyone and welcome to fly a queer haikyuu podcast. I'm rainbow, they she

em

and I'm m. None of your fucking business,

rainbow

you don't need to need to know. Today we are going to talk about season 2, episode 10, gears, also known as cogs in the dub. How do you feel about gears versus cogs?

00:27

I find that they are the same word yeah, I know there is something about like cog in the machine that, for me, has like a negative connotation, yeah, so I kind of like yours better, yeah, but it doesn't really matter, it's not egregious, they're synonyms, synony, okay. But before we dive into that episode, we have a few different things to talk about more than usual, but we'll get through them all. First and foremost, this episode is coming out on October 14th, which, in the United States, is Indigenous Peoples Day In the United States. This is a country built on genocide.

00:59

It's very important that we are mindful of all of the things that we have done to the indigenous communities that existed here before the white settlers landed, and I tried my best to educate myself, but as a non-native person, I am not coming from it with any kind of personal experience.

01:17

But there are plenty of people out there who do have that experience and who are educating you online, and I wanted to point you to one of those groups today. The Red Nation is a great organization. They have a podcast that's how I found them and I think that's their main thing is the podcast but they also have a website that has lots of great educational resources and it's a really great place to start educating yourself If you don't know much, not just about the history, but about what's currently going on with indigenous activism, and indigenous liberation, because I feel like a lot of times when we talk about indigenous people and the things that they've gone through, we've talked about it in the past, but it is ongoing to this day. The genocide continues to this very day, and I think it's something people need to talk about and learn about. The red nation is a great place to start.

em

02:03

Thank you very much, rainbow. I also kind of just wanted to note tomorrow is October 7th, so this episode is coming out after that.

rainbow

02:11

We didn't. I hate that we forgot to mention it.

em

02:15

I only just thought I only really realized it the other day that it'll be a year since these attacks on Gaza for this year started, and I just I don't really have much else to say except just kind of keeping that in mind and not forgetting about them. And Israel is continuing its reign of terror.

rainbow

02:32

It's really egregious, and I think the thing to remember with Israel is that it has the backing of most Western nations rich Western nations and so they are not defending themselves from harm. They are actively attacking, generally, people who don't have the means to fight back with the same kind of weapons and the same kind of numbers, and the struggle for Palestinian liberation is an indigenous struggle. The Palestinian people were there long before the current state of Israel was created. They have been fighting to get their land and their homes back for decades and a lot of us are only now learning about it because of what happened last year on October 7th. So thank you for bringing that up and you know the fight it's still continuing, which is horrific, Definitely horrific for the people experiencing it. And you know, just never forget free Palestine.

em

03:22

Yeah, it's a helpless feeling, but the best thing you can do is just stay aware, stay informed. I think the best thing that they had going was that we all treated the Israeli Palestinian conflict as like it's almost funny that it's so confusing and no one really knows what to talk, what to say, so it's like a taboo subject. And now here we are, so speak up.

rainbow

03:41

I think over the last year a lot of us have come to realize, because I used to be one of those people. I was like I don't know what to do about Israel-Palestine and it's like, yeah, I do. Palestinian people need to get their land back and I feel very good about saying that, yeah, so yeah.

em

03:56

On to housekeeping.

rainbow

03:59

Yeah, I don't know, I can't transition smoothly or gracefully away from that. Transitioning from heavy topics is always so weird. So, now we're gonna talk about the rhino beetle. No, but I think in in last episode I mentioned, like you know, they Yukie, I think, is the one who talks about like seeing a rhino beetle and I was like I wonder if there's any kind of significance, and I couldn't find anything that's like super tied to like japanese folklore or like I couldn't find any meaning. If anybody else knows, reach out. But I did. In my research I did find that there is a tradition of bug fighting in Japan, I think they all so called it beetle wrestling, and that just really tickled me. And, of course, now I am thinking about like dog fighting and cock fighting and I'm like, oh, is it? Is it bad? But I don't, I don't know if it's as violent as those other things.

em

04:40

I feel better about making bugs fight than animals.

rainbow

04:44

Okay, yeah, so rhino beetle significance? There isn't any. We do have a couple of shout outs. We want to shout out listener.

04:51

Annie, thank you for your lovely emails, and I think we interact with you on Twitter quite a bit. I think we interact just in our own personal Twitter lives, so that's pretty fun. But I really wanted to thank Annie, because they pointed out a couple of things. For one, there's a correction on Akaashi's height. We said that he is 5'9". He is 5'11", and the reason that happened and the reason some of these other people's heights are probably wrong too, is that Rainbow doesn't know how to convert height properly. I have now found an official height converter and I will be using that from now on. So if you were screaming at me about getting anybody's height wrong, that won't be an issue anymore.

05:30

Moving on to something that I consider a bigger issue, which is our transcripts From our end, the admin side of our podcast platform or our podcast hosting site the transcript is there, but it doesn't seem like it's available publicly, like when I look on the website, when I look on Spotify, when I look on Pocket Cast hosting site, the transcript is there, but it doesn't seem like it's available publicly. Like when I look on the website, when I look on Spotify, when I look on Pocket Cast which is what I used to listen to podcast I'm not seeing the transcript there. So I'm not sure what's going on. I don't know if maybe I'm like closing out of it before the the transcript, like finishes loading. I don't really know what's going on, but I'm gonna look into it. I'm gonna we're posting episode nine tomorrow. So when I get that ready, I'm gonna look into it. I'm gonna we're posting episode nine tomorrow. So when I get that ready, I'm gonna try to make sure I get the transcript in there correctly and hopefully we can get those out to people I don't. Maybe there's somewhere on the website where I can just post them. So I really apologize. Like we do the transcripts really for an accessibility thing and I feel really bad that we are failing on that front. And so again, annie, thank you for pointing that out. If anyone ever finds any issues like audio issues, transcript issues, incorrect statements that we make, always feel free to reach out to us. So again, thank you Annie for that and I will figure out the transcript issue and more housekeeping. Poor M is just so silent. I'm chilling, you're chilling. We have another listener shout out. Somebody sent us a lovely email. Finley, thank you so much for your wonderful email and your beautiful art that you shared with us. There was an episode where we mentioned Bungo Stray Dogs and I think one of us said something about like Oikawa is totally Dazai, and Finley ran with it and did like a whole little like Bungo Stray Dogs, haikyuu, au. It's really cool. We put the art out there on our Tumblr, instagram and Twitter, of course, so definitely go check that out. Give credit to Finley if you decide to repost. It's really really cool. I love the art, I like the style and it's just like everything is perfect. My favorite part I think I posted about it is there was like a little drawing of like Kageyama as Akutugawa and it said no thoughts, only autism. I thought that was really appropriate, and Finley also did a little art of how they picture us and it was so cute and so sweet and I made it our Twitter banner because I'm obsessed with it.

em

07:40

It was just so cool to see what you like think and it's fun to be perceived and I'm really pushing for a PO box.

rainbow

07:47

Yeah, we're talking about getting a PO box, so if anyone wanted to send us anything, you know what?

em

07:52

Give us feedback. Would you guys be into that? Would you send us stuff? Would you send me your teeth?

rainbow

07:57

Let's not put that out there. We don't actually want any human teeth or any other kind of teeth.

em

08:02

Speak for yourself. I'm gonna be like Katya I want your teeth. Wow, this is such a reversal.

rainbow

08:08

But yeah, if you, if anybody wanted to send us, if, yeah, let us know. If we had a PO box, would you want to send us stuff? Is that an egregious ask from us? You don't have to? Yeah, you don't have to, but the option would be there. And then also, if you are an artist or even a writer and you, want to describe how you see us, I would love more of that. Or if we ever say anything and it inspires you to create, create art, go for it and send it to us.

em

08:32

we want to see it yes, we put it on our metaphorical fridge every day. Yes, is that it? Do we catch up on everything?

rainbow

08:38

no, I have one more thing to talk about this housekeeping section is so long. Last thing, I promise then we will get into the episode, but we do have a mid-season break coming up between episode 12 and 13. We're kind of transitioning I think it's 12 and 13 we're transitioning from like the end of one arc. We're kind of transitioning from the training camp arc and back into a tournament arc. So we are going to do another mid-season break and this time we want to talk about rare pairs. and we have some ideas for some rare pairs that we want to talk about. But a big thing is like we don't necessarily read a ton of fic about those rare pairs. So first of all, let us know what rare pairs from season one and the first half of season two that you enjoy. You can send us other rare pairs, but just know we will only cover rare pairs from what we've already talked about in the podcast so far for spoiler reasons. And then, if you have any fic recommendations, if you're like this OiSuga fic is the best OiSuga fic I've ever read, cause, just like we did for our main ship episode back between season one and two, we definitely wanna share those fic recommendations and we won't be scrambling for links this time. Let's prepare them ahead of time. But yeah, that's all I have for housekeeping. I've talked. So Two one.

09:51

It's the final set of the Tokyo Summer Training Camp. Can Karasuno win a game at last? It's looking hopeful as the team shows off the new moves they've been working on for the last week. The gears are falling into place with Asahi's new killer jump serve, Noya's libero set and the four-man synchro attack and, in a shocking display of homosexuality, kakahina managed to read each other's hearts and minds to land their new freak quick With read each other's hearts and minds to land their new freak quick, with Bokuto falling into his sad mode. Can FuKuroo Donnie keep up with the crows?

em

10:17

So usually we will watch, we'll do. We call it our homework, where we watch the episode, take our notes and then immediately record. But today we did our homework and then we went and did grocery shopping, had lunch, did some things, and now we're recording. And so now I'm just like it's coming back to me what happens, this episode, and I'm getting hype. Our coach and teacher are at the pub. At the pub it's an izakaya, I think yeah, yeah, there we go?

10:39

there's the word. They're having drinks and discussing karasuno and how their strategy was built around the weirdo quick. And with the seijo match they kind of found their limitations with that strategy and that pushed them to this. All working to improve. This is where Takeda puts it. They're all working on their own cogs. We have Asahi and Noya working on their moves, the synchro attack, all of that getting to the end of the week and we're gonna see. You know how have we improved?

rainbow

11:05

and I, yeah, I love the way like Takeda is just so poetic, of course, with with what he says, which I love, and also I know they're drinking and that's why they're all blushy, but it's just. I really like that they're having this moment, just the two of them. They're kind of drunk. Yeah, they're talking about their boys, their sons.

em

11:20

And as they walk home, Takeda looks really nice under the night lights and Ukai thinks about kissing him.

rainbow

11:27

Then we're back at the training camp and it is the final set, and Karasuno is determined to take home one win. They have not won a single set this entire training camp and they think now is the time to do it.

em

11:43

Tsukki is holding his own as a blocker, but Bokuto is just a powerful force, and so is his boyfriend Akaashi, who's a very skilled setter, as Ukai notes.

rainbow

11:51

Well, I love this moment for two things, for two reasons. Because Tsukishima tells Kageyama they need to tighten up the line shots when Bokuto is spiking because, Tsukishima has been working with Bokuto a lot and he knows that and I love that.

12:02

There's no sass from Kageyama, and I like that and not from Tsukishima either. He's not because, like, we've seen him kind of talk to Kageyama before but he's so calm about it and and it's like, oh, I just love them slowly, like I bet they by the end of this year they're going to have a begrudging respect for each other, for sure, and I do love that.

em

12:20

And you know what Tsukikage shippers roll with that we have a little Boku Aka moment where Bokuto asks Akaashi like did you see me? Did you see?

rainbow

12:28

me do that. That's when he does the right. Yeah, okay. So what happens is so. Then it's another Bokuto spike and they, instead of two blockers, there's three blockers on him and he absolutely cannot do a line shot. But he curves it and does like this insane cross shot and everyone's like, oh my gosh. And then Bokuto, just for Akaashi. Nobody else on the FuKuroo Donnie team. He's like Akaashi, did you see me? Did you see that, wasn't it good? And, of of course, Akaashi gives him the praise. He's like yes, Bokuto, that was an amazing cross shot.

em

12:56

And it's like he's saying it like he's a toddler, but it's like you know, in Akaashi's head he does think it's a badass shot boku waka is just like a third year version of kagehina, but, like Akaashi, is a little bit calmer and not so yelly, but like it's. But like Bokuto and Hinata are very similar and I don't know if we've seen Hinata act like this too much with Kageyama, but he does the exact same thing where he's like. Did you see me?

rainbow

13:16

Yeah more than anyone. He wants Kageyama's approval. Yeah, and that's how it is with Boko Aka. And Ukai notices that both Hinata and Bokuto raise the morale of their teammates and their rivals, yeah, which I appreciate Like father, like son, absolutely. And so we have kind of a flashback to Bokuto explaining a super cool move to Hinata during their individual practice, and I love Bokuto is explaining how to do a feint to Hinata and he's right in front of Akaashi, like Akaashi is in the shot, and Bokuto says it's not about running away from the enemy and Akaashi kind of scoffs because in the last episode Akaashi accused Bokuto of running away when he did a feint. I loved that so much, I was like they're such a fucking married couple, seriously. And then Hinata does the feint and it shocks everyone, including Bokuto.

em

14:06

Bokuto is the most shocked of anyone, even though he's the one who taught Hinata this move and Akaashi reminds him of that.

rainbow

14:11

And then the other Fukurodani guys are so pissed.

em

14:19

They're like glaring at Bokuto, like what the fuck man? And then my favorite is Kageyama is like amazed that Hinata really kind of you know, because Hinata has just always been going off instincts we're really starting to see for the first time him use his brain and try and use kind of strategy and different moves. So Kageyama pretty much is like should you be thinking so hard, you're going to get a fever. It's like baby girl, don't think so hard, you're going to hurt yourself.

rainbow

14:35

I love that. This is one of those times when the Kageyama dub is doing a good job because he's like did you seriously just use your stupid head? Are you feeling okay? And then he just is like oh, shut up, I use my stupid head all the time In the sub.

em

14:49

it's more like you are the last person to tell me that about like being stupid, Like Kageyama has no like to stand on.

rainbow

14:54

Oh my god, I love, oh my god, I like that better. I like that. He's just like reading Kageyama.

em

14:58

So Kageyama is locked the fuck in. I love how he describes it. It's just like my stomach feels good. It's like there's no food in there, I'm all digested and I'm right. He's kind of analyzing how everything is going and he starts to think maybe we're able to do the quick. That same self-doubt creeps in because he's like but the team is kind of on a good flow and if we mess it up, that could mess it up. And right as he's like, yeah, we shouldn't do it, he hears Hinata in his head Ya ne, no, you're not going to do it. And he's looking at Kageyama and is a request and a challenge all at once.

rainbow

15:33

I'm gonna kill somebody. This fucking moment, this fucking moment he hears Hinata in his head In the dub. He says we doing this and I just want to say this is a beautiful moment of voice acting. Hinata's VA uses just this soft, almost like intimate, which I'm sure he does Same in the sub. It's just this soft like intimate, which I'm sure he does same in the sub. It's just this soft like intimate voice in his head of like it is literally a moment just between the two of them. When you see that moment, it's like the background fades away. It's just Hinata, it's just Kageyama.

em

16:04

They're looking at each other it feels like we're getting the literal version of what Hinata described to Yachi and that how, when we're on the court together, it's like I can tell what he's thinking, because of course, Kageyama is not literally hearing his voice, but he may as well be, because he can tell by that look like he knows what that look means, and they're just on the same exact page. Hinata is also thinking like we can, we could do this quick right now. So Kageyama gives it to him.

16:27

Hinata is like describing it, and it's like the ball comes and then it stops and I love the sound design here, because everything in the background fades away and you have like the hydraulic spin of the ball and then the thud of Hina's palm and then how it hits against the other side of the court.

rainbow

16:41

It's so good. Like honestly, I don't know how you could at this point be on the fence about shipping Kage Hina, but if you were on the fence, you're definitely falling straight into the Kage Hina side of things because they are they're so in love.

em

16:59

I will say, like this episode was getting me. I tweeted about kagehina a couple things today.

rainbow

17:01

I was on my shit again because this episode is just so good. It fucking like honestly, if you ever feel like you're losing your like kagehina ism inside of you, just watch this fucking episode and you'll be like, oh no, that's right, that's right, I'm obsessed with this because, like Kageyama is like he likes, they freak out together.

em

17:15

I love the way they freak out, they like turn to each other. Of course everyone is shook about what they've just witnessed and they turn to each other in a daze. There's a beat and then they both scream and they have the look and Kageyama especially because you never see him like this, where he's got a big smile Like he, the pure, genuine excitement of like a little boy on his face, and it's the only only something that Hinata could bring out in him he's so excited that they did this, like he thought he wasn't gonna be able to, but he fucking did.

rainbow

17:45

And then, like I think, Kageyama says something to him about like, doesn't he say something along the lines of like, why, like, you just went for it? And then Hinata says, didn't you?

em

17:54

Gay. I wrote Kageyama, who can't handle any big feeling without yelling, so he proceeds to scold Hinata for just kind of going for it. Who is someone's watching them argue? And they're arguing in the background. There's a background argument that continues and Kageyama is saying I have to mentally prepare and Hinata's like who cares? We did it and I was like autism, adhd relationship, right there.

rainbow

18:14

Yeah, and like Kageyama, is like mad at Hinata for because he's like he baited me into it again yeah.

em

18:19

He's he like is annoyed that Hinata has, like he knows that Hinata has him wrapped around his finger and he's fucking pissed. He's just like Kageyama, you in denial of their connection. And Hinata's like you didn't feel our soul tie just then. I know you did Like, ah, it's so good. Right before the break we have Takeda saying the first cog is in place and of course that first cog is our duo, and then we have our commercial break, which is, incidentally, KageHina nailing the serve. Just as an audience member it's been now five episodes since this fight the serve, and just as an audience member, it's been now five episodes since this fight and it like we're feeling it too, like the joy of finally fucking nailing it. And this point also ties them with fuKuroo donnie, because we have boKuroo immediately ask Akaashi if they could try it, and Akaashi's like we should never attempt that, mainly because he sees the insane godlike skill that Kageyama has to do to make that happen and he knows like he could never do it either yes and yeah.

rainbow

19:17

And Hinata is just like he's. He's like saying a bunch of stuff to Kageyama and he has a little blush on his face and he's like you really are amazing, Kageyama.

em

19:24

He what's really funny, too, is when Kageyama is like having that moment of like. Oh, he pulled me into his pace again. You can also see in the sub, because I have the subtitle, so it's really easy to see. Hinata starts his little thing with what you want to go because Kageyama looks so mad, but then he's like anyway, that was really cool. The ball appeared right in front of me. You really are amazing.

rainbow

19:45

Kageyama like genuine eyes sparkling, and Kageyama literally goes he does not know how to handle this compliment, and so he goes immediately into you.

em

19:56

You, you're an idiot and he's like. His face is like dead and the sense. So our third years are watching this little interaction and it's very cute and Daichi's like. The look on Kageyama's face is indescribable. I have a description it's gay panic.

rainbow

20:10

He's experiencing gay panic because I'm sure Kageyama's gotten compliments before from people. I'm sure that, like he's gotten compliments, I think, specifically when it comes to Hinata, he doesn't understand why it makes him feel that way. I have to go to AO3 right now.

em

20:27

Yeah, also, he says Hinata doesn't usually compliment Kageyama in such a straightforward way.

rainbow

20:32

Yes, and then we also have Yachi being so excited. She's like, she's so excited about. She's like, yes, you did it, nice kill. Because that's when we get the moment of Hinata and Kageyama like holding out their fist for her because, like, she has really been a part of this too and I love that they like acknowledge that and I love that she gets a moment. And also when we see Daichi and Asahi and tanaka talking about it and tanaka saying like, oh, he's getting excited. He says he's getting jealous and he wants to hit a spike too.

21:00

But we also see Tsukishima in the background and he has an uncharacteristically determined look on his face. He like you, you don't. You don't you really only see the profile like you see, he like pushes up his glasses and then he looks and he's like looking at kagehina and I'm like this, he feels challenged by them. He's like I've been growing at this camp, but now they've been growing too, and I feel like I'm behind and where before he would have been very apathetic and like, oh well, I'm never gonna catch up. I feel like you can see that he's like no, I will fucking catch up to you.

em

21:28

Yeah, for sure we have boku on the other side saying hey, hey, hey, it's not over yet, and the way I was like oh yeah, we're still in the middle of it that was just one point, like I forgot. The game's still going.

rainbow

21:37

Well, well, we always have to pause a little bit for some Kagehina gayness, of course.

em

21:41

And then is this where we get to see Kenma. I wrote Kenhina, kenhina, kenhina Because and he's like Shouyou's always doing something new.

rainbow

21:51

I have in my notes that Kenma is looking at Hinata like he wants to eat him for dinner, because he does.

em

21:56

His eyes are so intense and Kuro sees it too, and I love Kuro's like he's really just giving the long time best friend thing, Like he's reading Kenma like a book. First he's like well, maybe he should be your teammate. And Shouyou's like Kenma is like no, we should not be teammates. I couldn't keep up with Shouyou. I would have to be doing something new. Like I could never slack off. That genius setter backed off a little bit and he called him out on it. And then Kuro's like oh, well, then maybe he should just stay an opponent for you. And Kenma's like well, what do you mean? He's like because you get the same look on your face when you watch Hinata as that, no, I don't. And he's like yes, you do.

rainbow

22:33

No, I don't, yes, I do I love that we get in the dub. I heard it like four different times of the like do not do to do not, it was so cute like as they're walking away also. So two things here. One I I had a thought, because crow is saying like, oh, it seems like, because he specifically in the dub is talking about like like Hinata really seems to motivate you and then I was like is Kuro scheming to get Hinata to move to Tokyo and join Nekoma so that Kenma will be more motivated?

22:58

because that's a crack fic I would read of Kuro literally kidnapping Hinata and like being like this is our new Nekoma player and then it not working out because Kenma's like I can't toss to him anymore, my arms will fall off. No, it doesn't, And then in the dub, whenever he's talking about that, look on his face. Like whenever he gets a new game, he says it's the face of anticipation.

em

23:20

Oh, and I really liked that In the sub he does waku waku, which is like I think an exciting noise in Japan. I remember Itadori does it in Jujutsu Kaisen. He's like waku waku. He's like I think about it every single time. They explain the difference between the quicks for the, what I find millionth time, and I understand why, because it is like a very subtle and very technical difference. Yes, but I did just want to like applaud for Odate because I feel like they are so good at teaching us, like just the general public, volleyball in a way that feels entertaining and accessible. And me, someone who is not a big sports person I know more about volleyball than any other sport now and I've said this before, but like I feel like I can. I saw the merit in sports now and like I understand the excitement about it and like understanding the game and I don't know. I just had to tip my hat.

rainbow

24:06

Yeah, yeah, absolutely.

em

24:14

Oh, and I think it's what a ton of them. But no other sports anime has made me really fall in love with the sport the way Haikyuu has.

rainbow

24:18

I totally get that. I think Yuri on Ice tries to do that with figure skating. I think they try to really show a lot and maybe it's just not as successful because it does have some other stuff going on and it just it's not as long. We only have 12 episodes versus, you know, four plus seasons. And there's no manga for yuri on ice. It was just an anime, so, like I, I think that makes a lot of sense. And then something else we get here is we get Ukai talking to Takeda about that, about the set, and then Ukai gets one of his like demon smiles and he's like I gotta bring the old man to the preliminaries. He's like he wants to show off the freak quick for grandpa yuk.

em

24:54

Absolutely, he wants to prove himself to Gramps. So then they try it again and miss Kageyama is very upset with himself because he did everything the same. But it is tricky and, as Asahi points out, this is something that won't come easy. And what I love here is Hinata very genuinely tells Kageyama, hey, don't mind, Like it's okay. But Kageyama, who can't handle kind Hinata, attacks him for it.

rainbow

25:16

Well, and it's not just that Hinata like pats him on the back. It's very gentle. It's very gentle. He's like, hey, don't worry about it, Kageyama, and I think that's another moment of like Kageyama love with you you can't be kind to me.

25:38

I am wounded emotionally and kindness will make me love you, and I don't know how to do that right now. Oh my god, it's just so fucking gay. And then, and you know so, now we've seen the free quick, we've given it its due and now it's time for the senpai to show off how they've improved.

em

25:53

The other cogs are falling into place.

rainbow

25:55

Next up, we have Asahi and Noya we get an Asahi sir, which is really great, and then we get Noya doing his set and of course he sets it to Asahi. It goes out and I love it's so cute. Because no, it's like no, it was too short, blah, blah, blah. And Asahi's like no man, it's fine, I thought it was good and no, it's like no, you have to tell me it's fine, I thought it was good, and Noya's like no, you have to tell me it's bad. If it's bad and like I love, it does feel like sometimes with these like interactions, we get in like it's such good cannon fodder for fic, where it's like you can easily put this into like another scenario yeah, where they're just where they're in love

26:26

I mean they are in love. Obviously we also get to see the synchro attack. Tanaka smashes it through and he's so excited about getting a hit. I love.

em

26:35

this is another great dub moment where he says me do a good, spike Me so happy feels, yeah, the dub handled that nicely, I think, because he's just kind of like babbling, I guess. So, yeah, all the cogs are falling into place. The messy attacks from the beginning of the week are starting to come together.

rainbow

26:51

Fukurodani is pissed. This is why they didn't want to play against Karasuno. They're too unpredictable. Also, Suga is talking to Tadashi about the synchronized attack and how it's like four people going up and you see, Suga kind of get an idea and we'll find out later what that is. Okay, okay, so now we can go into Moody Bokuto.

em

27:16

Moody Bokuto, and this episode really reminds me I am a Bokuto kinny.

27:18

I'm like him when I'm in a really good mood and I'm also dramatic like he is. So and I totally understand, like he just gets frustrated and he just, you know, he's still a teenager and he lets it get to him. So because he's getting frustrated, he's fucking up more. What a concept. Then, when he fucks up one too many times and the teammates all know and they're like, oh already, isn't it too early for this? And he, very dramatically, is like Akaashi, don't set to me anymore.

rainbow

27:42

We kind of get a build up to that. A timeout is called and they're all talking and I think we see over on the Karasuno side they're talking about Tsukishima getting so many one touches and that's how they were able to get Bokuto kind of worn down. They're all just like. They're kind of like looking at Bokuto and he's like let's just get this started. I'm pissed. And then Akaashi reminds Bokuto to stay calm and then he flubs his. But then he flubs his serve.

28:03

The ball is in play and Akaashi's going to set and he could send it to Bokuto and there are three options. He takes 0.5 seconds to think about it. There are three options because Akaashi has cataloged every single piece of Bokuto and he says you know, I can give Bokuto the ball and he, he gets the ball in and his spirits are raised. Or I can give Bokuto the toss, he'll fail and his spirits will be crushed. Or I could not give Bokuto the toss and give it to somebody else, but then Bokuto will pout about it and that'll be annoying, and so, and then he keeps failing.

28:32

And this is the first time we find this is the first time that karasuno has been in the lead during the entire training camp. They have not. They not only have they not won a single set, they haven't come close to winning a single set. Then we get Bokuto sad mood, sad mode, because you know Bokuto's being all dramatic. And then Akaashi's just like okay, whatever, but like, while I'm not setting to you, like, try to chill out. And then is this where we get how does this line go in the sub? Because Kageyama tells Hinata they're going to do the freak quick again and he says I'll give you the set you want, so trust me and fly.

em

29:02

That's pretty much what he says in the sub. Okay, awesome, that's the episode. Things are picking up for Karasuno and we'll see if they can get this game. I don't remember if they win or not, so this will be exciting, all right. So Manga versus Anime. I got fucking nothing. This was pretty much a good one to one. I think like they changed the first scene and like the drinking scene in the beginning is like a little bit different in the timeline, but that was really the only difference. And this goes through halfway through chapter 92 to 94. If we're reading along, please put this down.

rainbow

29:33

Okay, and now we have our character spotlight yes, and I kind of struggled a little bit on who to pick for this, but I decided I want to give my girl, Shirafuku Yukie. I decided to do her because we kind of see her in the last episode a little bit and then we see her again in this one. She's kind of like mentions that Bokuto's getting upset and we just have so few female characters. I will say I could not find an actual character sheet for her. I found some stuff in the trivia section of the wiki but we don't have like the full character sheet with the ability parameters which she is a manager. So I guess we don't really need those because she's not playing. But I was a little sad I couldn't find one. If anyone knows, if there is one for her and I just couldn't find it, you know, feel free to send it to us because I'd love to see it.

30:17

But just getting into her personality, I have a quote from the wiki which is Yukie appears to be well mannered, calm, relaxed and a mature individual, especially towards her team. She's also shown to have a great appetite and appears to eat anything that she can get her hands on, which I love. I love because that is something in media where, like women often are not shown eating, that's like a big thing. It's like. When women are shown eating in movies, it's like, oh, wow, you're actually gonna let a woman eat food. Patriarchy strikes again everybody, but not the case with Yukie. She loves to eat.

30:51

So, moving on to her name, meaning Shirafuku means white fortune, is what it said on the trivia, although when I looked up how to pronounce that word it said white clothes. So I'm assuming that, like the name, maybe the kanji is different. I'm not seeing no, I'm seeing the kanji anyway. So it's either white clothes or white fortune, either one And then her first name, Yukie, means snow painting, which I thought was cute, and I kind of wonder, because white is in, is like one of Fukurodani's colors. I think white, gold and black are their colors, and so I wonder if that's why there's so much like white and snow associated with her name. Yeah, and then, like I said, there was no character sheet found, but here's the information that I have on her she is a third year at Fukurodani Academy and she is the team manager of the volleyball team. Her height is 160.1 centimeters, which is about 5'3", which is about my height, so we're about the same height. Her favorite food is any, any food, any and all food.

em

31:51

She loves it.

rainbow

31:52

And then her current worry, which I would love to know where they got this from if she doesn't have a character sheet? But she has a lazy, slash, sleepy voice she can't get rid of, even when she's irritated, which I love. The idea of somebody who's mad but who's just like come on, you guys stop it I like Yukie.

em

32:09

She's a bad bitch I love Yukie too.

rainbow

32:12

I, yeah, she's. She's fun in the next episode and I like her voice. I really like her dub. She's a bad bitch. I love Yukie too. Yeah, she's fun in the next episode and I like her voice. I really like her dub voice. It's very silly and it does very much come across as like lazy and sleepy.

em

32:23

So, yeah, yeah, we love her Shout out to Yukie Nice, thank you for all you do. Handling emo Bokuto All right, ready for the world's favorite game? Yes, it's who in Haikyuu. This week's scenario is brought to us by Brit, and it's what kind of fan fiction would they write? We're getting a little meta. This week we're going to talk about Hinata Kageyama Bokuto, Akaashi Yachi Kyoko Noya Asahi Tanaka, Tsukishima Yamaguchi, Kenma Kuroo and Yukie I wish you all could have seen the face I'm just made.

rainbow

33:01

Okay. What fan fiction is he? I don't know. I okay here for this. How about we think about, like, let's pretend, instead of like them as volleyball players, let's like think of them as like they are like full-on, like fujoshi's, okay, and stuff. So like what? As Hinata, like his character, his personality, like what kind of fan fiction would he be writing?

em

33:15

I feel like maybe not as much of a focus on like romance or plot heavy like adventure, like I think he'd have fun with AUs and stuff like that yeah, he'd really.

rainbow

33:25

I think he'd really enjoy like writing the different characters in different scenarios and stuff and I think he would really just have fun with it.

em

33:31

Like I don't think he would get caught up on, like oh, this sucks, or whatever. I think he would just write the most self-indulgent stuff and have a good time and he's no beta.

rainbow

33:38

We die like tai chi for sure like lots of errors, but he doesn't care. He's putting it out there for the world to see. Kageyama is everything is in character meticulous like he's done his research.

em

33:53

If it's needed, he has a playlist that is linked nicely when he posts the new chapter he's got a nice little art piece that he does it with, like he writes the whole thing before he starts posting.

rainbow

34:06

Everything is edited. He has at least one, if not two, betas going over it to make sure everything is perfect, and maybe he has a secret account where he writes more self-indulgent, messy shit. Oh yeah, I love that okay, Bokuto is very similar to Hinata. I think is he's writing crack fic is what crack fic.

em

34:27

You don't need to have whole paragraphs of all caps spoken out.

rainbow

34:30

It's hard to read yeah, he doesn't really get the spacing thing, so it's just a wall of text. Oh my god, yeah, absolutely again, yeah, no beta. He's just throwing it out there. or maybe he tries to do no beta and Akaashi is like no, I'm reading over everything before you post it Akaashi is famous because he's very good.

em

34:52

He writes big epics and then he has a site account where he writes the most fucked up shit you've ever read in your life.

rainbow

34:57

That is what I'm saying. Akaashi has a dead dove account. Akaashi is writing dead dove shit that you wouldn't believe came out of him, but because he's a weird little freak, but yeah, I do also think he is writing. Yeah, he's writing multi-chapter fics, but again, also, like Kageyama I think, very meticulous. He has a schedule, he keeps to it. Things are edited like I think maybe he's almost a perfectionist about it where it takes him a long time to finish a piece before he'll start posting it because he's like tweaking every little word I think Yachi is insecure, like me.

em

35:29

She's gonna be like this sucks. She has several betas, and she only writes Yuri, and if the characters she likes are male, she makes them ladies.

rainbow

35:38

That's fucking right. She is writing by the lesbians for the lesbians.

em

35:43

Or she's getting men pregnant one way or another.

rainbow

35:46

Oh yeah, well, she's definitely giving them all pussies, for sure. Kyoko, I think, another meticulous one. Yeah, I think she's writing. I think she's writing like really quiet, like lovely stories full of like, symbolism and metaphor. I think she's she's giving you things that are like very meaningful and really like get to like the like, the deep emotional roots of the characters and on the flip side, Noya is writing really bad porn.

em

36:16

Yeah, and then he stuck his wiener into her, hoo-ha, and it was awesome yeah, yeah, I agree, I absolutely agree.

rainbow

36:23

Yeah, he's writing. He's writing the kind of like the, the kind of like plot. What plot? All porn, no plot. Yeah, that is like a thousand words and is literally like it's. We don't even need to know how they got into the situation, they just start fucking.

em

36:37

That's what he is writing Asahi inserts him and Noya onto any character he writes by accident. Yeah, at the end of the day, it's really actually about Noya no, I totally agree.

rainbow

36:47

His favorite character in every show is the like loud, blustery character. Yeah, for sure, and I think he's writing. I think he's writing some some good stuff. I think maybe shorter. I think he's doing some one shots. I think, like Yachi, he's very nervous and he just assumes it's bad, like maybe it takes him a long time to actually start posting anything because he doesn't think he's good yeah, I don't think as he would like have like a social media presence.

em

37:08

He just like drops fic and everyone's like who is she?

rainbow

37:12

Tanaka Also writing bad porn.

em

37:15

Yeah, yeah, but also maybe surprisingly like good at getting emotional beats down because he's in touch with his emotions.

rainbow

37:21

I think so too. I think he, I think he's, he, he'll be like this was supposed to be PWP, and then emotions got involved, yeah, thing, yeah, and I think it's good, I think it. Maybe it's a little, a little messy, a little maybe a little amateurish, but like you really see the heart there, Tsukishima doesn't tell anyone, takes it to his grave.

em

37:43

It's like his biggest, darkest secret. But always anonymous and he's writing like epic length jurassic park au's yes, absolutely yeah.

rainbow

37:51

It's like yamaguchi knows that it's Tsukishima. He's the only one that will ever know, because he sees Tsukishima in it, but no one else will ever know that it's him.

em

38:01

Yeah, okay, yamaguchi, yamaguchi I just feel like he is an active like in the community of whatever fandom he's in. He has a lot of fun with it yeah, no, I totally agree.

rainbow

38:11

I think he's doing some thread fix. I think he's doing a few like fix here or there.

em

38:15

I think he could do. I think he has some range, I think he likes fluff, but he can do smud or he can do like a little bit of angst.

rainbow

38:21

Absolutely Canma. He's writing fucked up shit.

38:26

I feel like, I feel like, yeah, I feel like he'd get really into like the plot of it and maybe more like kind of an action adventure type thing maybe yeah, I see him doing like a really complicated story, something like oh, what's that cyberpunk one, the Sakuatsu one insert coin to play, that kind of thing, like I think he's doing something very intricate, but I think he's doing a lot of like fun Easter eggs. He's doing that thing where it's just like oh, I see how this is tied to the canon, even though it's an au like he's still got pieces of canon in there.

em

38:56

Yeah, Kuroo is writing Kenma slash reader fic.

rainbow

38:58

Yes, yes, he is. And Akaashi is writing Bokuto slash reader fic. Yep, and they bond over that. Yeah, Kuroo, yeah, just like how Asahi like doesn't realize that he's putting Noya into all of his characters. Yeah, Kuroo is purposely putting Kenma and all like every fic is a love letter to Kenma and Kenma wishes he would stop sending them.

em

39:22

Yukie is, I feel like could write some dark shit.

rainbow

39:27

I could see that. I could see that for Yukie. I could also see her doing like a bakery AU, because she loves, I think she's like. I do think there's a lot of food involved in the fix and there's a lot of descriptions of the food. Oh, like that, one is esselle fic with the delivery boy, yep.

em

39:44

I don't think we're talking about Yep.

rainbow

39:46

If you know, you know it's really good. Yep, I don't think what you're talking about. Yep, if you know, you know it's really good. Look it up, don't read it. At work there is art inserted into the fic and I did not realize that, and then suddenly there was porn on my screen.

em

40:01

I was at my desk so I had to turn that off. All right, thank you, britt, for that fun human Haikyuu scenario. Before we lose some of you to the spoiler zone, you can catch us on our socials. rainbow

40:54

Moving right along, you're moving into a land of both shadow and substance of things and ideas you've just crossed over into the spoiler zone I love that.

41:05

You have to keep all of that in the whole fucking thing, that whole thing. All right, baby, take it away, all right. So I just wanted to say, well, first of all, I did mention that Suga gets an idea, and that idea is for the five man synchro attack, where Suga comes on as the setter and then everybody, including Kageyama, goes for it, which we later see. See is like that's a dangerous move, because then there's nobody there if the the spike doesn't work. But what, what would karasuno be if they weren't taking risks? Exactly

41:37

But then we also get to see after Bokuto does his cool line shot, and this is hard to explain on a audio, mediBut we see tanaka like talking about the cross shot and we see him kind of doing the same arm movement where he's like because it's like he like moves his hand like around the ball to get it. And we actually get to see this in season four. Tanaka does that because his line shot during the Inarizaki match, his line shot keeps getting blocked and then he does an amazing cross shot, just like Bokuto does. Yeah, and it just made me want to see the outline for this series. Like, tell me Fuku, not Fukuradate. Tell me if Fukuradate doesn't have a fucking board with red string connecting all of these things. Like there's so much good foreshadowing in this show. It's really great. Yeah, and then you also mentioned that in the sub, when Kageyama, or when Hinata does his feint, Kageyama says like don't think too hard, you'll get a fever. And that just I, you know, it's just, I'm triggered.

em

42:36

The idea of.

rainbow

42:36

Hinata getting a fever it's triggering. Everyone knows that Hinata's fever is the villain of Haikyuu. Yeah, that's actually the villain.

em

42:53

Yeah, fuck Oikawa, forget about Atsumu whatever, Ushijima the fever is the villain. Yeah, yeah, and that's all I have. Did you have anything you wanted to add? No, we're gonna. Well, we probably got like one more episode left of our favorite arc. It's gonna be fun. We're enjoying it, and until next time, trust me and fly high.
