This message is being recorded after the original recording of this episode and after the results of the US elections, and we of course felt the need to jump on here and say a few things because obviously these results are not great. So Rainbow is going to take it away.

rainbow

00:20

Yeah, I just want to speak to the grief, fear and anger that a lot of us are feeling, no-transcript, so that throughout the next four years and beyond, as we need things, we have at least one place we can go to to look for those. This list is by no means comprehensive, so if you have suggestions for things that could be added to this, please feel free to reach out. I also want to say that a lot of this stuff is very United States centric, but that does not mean that this election will not affect the rest of the world. So, especially if you have international resources you think could be added to this list, let me know.

01:19

First off, we have some support lines from organizations that are divested from the police, meaning they won't call the cops or emergency services without your consent. We have Blackline, which centers a BIPOC, lgbtq plus Black femme lens. That number is 1-800-604-5841. I was having trouble finding a hotline or a support line for people with disabilities, but I did find Disability and Disaster Hotline. Climate change is going to continue creating natural disasters. If you are somebody with disabilities or you know somebody with disabilities and you need help during a disaster, you can call Kiki's meowing. You can call 1-800-626-4959. Next, we have the LGBT National Help Center. Their number is 843-4564. Then we have Strong Hearts Native Helpline, which centers Native Americans and Alaskan Natives. Their number is 844-762-8483. We have Thrive Lifeline, which is trans-led and operated. Check out their website, which will be linked in our show notes, because they have a link to other non-carceral support options. So if you're having an issue but you don't want to involve the police, there are options out there. Again, that's Thrive Lifeline. Their number is 313-662-8209. We have Trans Lifeline, which is run by and for trans people. They have a number for the US and for Canada. So their US number, 877-565-8860. Their Canadian number, 877-330-6366. Lastly, we have Wildfire Alliance Peer Support Line. It's trained peer supporters and their number is 888-407-4515. So, yeah, those are just the support lines. If you are having trouble just dealing with these the times that we are living in, you can call these numbers and find some support.

03:14

And I just want to briefly mention some of the other things you can find on our social media and in this document, which again we will post in the show notes and to our social media, I've got some information about mutual aid and direct action, including tips for attending protesting, knowing your rights and ways that you can find mutual aid groups near you and labor organizing groups near you. There's also information about abortion access and abortion funds. One thing when it comes to abortion, planned Parenthood is a great organization, but they have plenty of funding. Donate to your local abortion funds. They need it way more than Planned Parenthood does.

03:47

I've also got some information about access to information. Knowledge is power. We've already seen lots of book bands across this nation and you will probably find that access to information is going to be difficult depending on where you live. So I've got some options where you can find digital access to banned books, queer literature, that sort of thing, queer sex ed.

04:09

I also have a list of podcasts that I recommend that I find very helpful for understanding some of the things that are going on in the world. There's one about the Supreme Court. There's some about history both people in history who have done very terrible things and then people in history who have done very terrible things, and then people in history who have done very cool stuff to aid and resistance to oppression, that kind of thing. So check all of that out on our social media in this doc, and this document will be available for anyone to view, as long as you have the link. So please feel free to save it to your own drives, download it, send it to people in your networks, spread this information and, again, if you know of a resource that you think should be on this list, please reach out to us and let us know. I will continue to update it as I come across things.

04:52

And, lastly, I just want to say again you know a lot of this stuff is United States focused and the United States will be going through a lot over the next four years, but everything else going on in the world will not stop and some of it will get worse.

05:04

So continue to support Palestine, sudan, congo, the Uyghur people, all of the affected groups who are currently being affected by the rise of fascism in the world. And we have to take care of ourselves, we have to take care of each other. Community is what we need right now and we love all of you and we're so glad that we have this community and we hope that we can be a resource for people in this time. Last thing I want to say if you are queer or trans and you feel that it is not safe for you to be visibly queer or trans right now, that is okay, and for those of us who can be visibly queer and trans, we have to stand up for and fight for those of us in our community who can't and with that we're going to get into our episode.

05:46

Thank you, everybody, and remember to take care of hello everyone and welcome to fly a queer Haikyuu podcast. I'm rainbow, they she and I'm m she her. And today we are going to be talking about season 2, episode 13 a simple and pure strength. It's what we love, yes, and honestly we're just diving right into it because we don't have anything for chit chat, nothing for housekeeping, we don't have time for small talk, absolutely not. We have a 200 meter tall boy to talk about, a 200 meter boy he's godzilla.

06:28

in the dub they call him kaiju, oh well there you go. Okay, are you ready for your recap? Yeah, count me down.

em

06:37

Tres dos uno. It's Karasuno versus Lenny from Mice and Men, the team in lime green that our crows need to beat to get through the prelims. Can they climb the blank face two meter wall or will they be strangled by a simple and pure strength? It's another rip-roaring episode with TanaNoya hijinks and pure strength. It's another rip-roaring episode with TanaNoya hijinks, kagehina, supremacy and one cute lunchbox. I love that. Thank you, this guy. I started the episode and I was like so many Lenny jokes hit me all at once. I didn't know what to do. I didn't know where to start. Kukugawa's whole strategy is this one very tall man. They say it themselves that their team is pretty mid, but they've got one tall boy and it's all they'll need.

rainbow

07:17

Yeah, they say it multiple times that they're like guys, if we can just get it up in the air high enough for Yukizawa to hit, he'll smash it through. Yeah, but they don't know that they're working with an elevated Karasuno.

em

07:28

That would have worked Karasuno a few months ago but they have one weapon, we have several.

rainbow

07:37

it's so good, okay, yeah. So we start off the episode with everyone just being impressed by Hyakuzawa's height and power, and they show him walking by Hinata, and Hinata looks so tiny in comparison to this guy yeah, and right off, the bat hits it right over their blocks yeah, his forearm is like above their hands, like his entire forearm.

07:54

yeah, he's so tall and he has such a high reach. And at some point later in the episode he gets compared to Lev. Yes, but Lev apparently is more skilled than him, which is saying something, because we all know how I feel about Lev.

em

08:05

It gets revealed to us that he's only been playing volleyball for six months.

rainbow

08:09

Yes, but even still he's giving Karasuno a lot of trouble. At first they're not sure how to deal with the fact that he's too tall to block and he himself is so tall that if he's able to get there to block, he can block most things, because he just gets right up in their face and he's especially blocking Hinata.

em

08:25

So we go back up to the stands with Grandpa Ukai and the lot, and Yachi notices that more and more people are coming to watch the giant play. Yes, as we get further along, more people are going to come to watch. We also get introduced to another community member, mikako Sensei, who joins, and she knows the guy that knows Grandpa Ukai. They were neighbors and now she teaches like elementary school and is a coach for junior volleyball. There's just such a sense of community throughout Haikyuu that I enjoy.

rainbow

08:53

Yes, yes, absolutely. And Ukai like gives her a little nod. It felt like when motorcycle riders on the road like give each other a little hand signal when they see each other.

em

09:03

I wrote the way Grandpa Ukai nods in acknowledgement is hot, leave me alone. I saw that note and I was like yeah, so then we have Kageyama moving his fingers like a pervy old man.

rainbow

09:14

That what Hinata says in the sub, yes, okay. Well, in the dub he says why are you wriggling your fingers around like a wizard?

em

09:22

that is a very innocent. Because in the and you know what, I'll give you even a glimpse into manga versus anime right now because they shorten it, because in the manga, at least in the translation I read, it says why are you moving your fingers like a creepy old man who can't decide what to grope first? Oh my gosh. Yeah, they cut that end bit, like we don't need that detail in there. Oh my god.

rainbow

09:41

And also Kakeyama would never.

em

09:43

He has no interest in groping anything but volleyballs. That's the only ball he wants for now.

rainbow

09:49

Yes, I think. Before that, though, is that when we get Grandpa Ukai talking about Hyakuzawa and like how, like his height and his power might keep normal people at bay, because he said that, and I was like that's a good thing, Hinata isn't normal.

em

10:03

Yeah, well, I think Grandpa Ukai just has a really great objective view of the whole game. He's like he acknowledges that the height is a problem, but then it can be like, you know, there's just nothing, sure, especially in these teams where the boys are still growing.

rainbow

10:16

Yeah, okay, so back to Kageyama wriggling his fingers like a perv, a pervy wizard? I guess yes, and all.

em

10:22

Kageyama just went hand looked at him and Hinata jumped back and raised his hands ready for a fight. You know those two are constantly slapping at each other. They're having constant slap fights over nothing.

rainbow

10:35

Yes, every touch is just a little bit of a hit as well between them. But yeah, and Kageyama's saying he's like I don't know, I just feel really good. He says, the ball feels like it fits even better in my hands today.

em

10:44

Yeah, which is something only a volleyball idiot like Kageyama would say.

rainbow

10:47

And Hinata seems to understand what he's talking about.

em

10:50

Yeah, and is probably the only one on Karasuno who could Hyakuzawa is proving to be a problem, but our defense, Daichi and NishiNoya, notice something about the way he's hitting and they just look at each other and nod it's the defense duo well, and I love it, because somebody in the stands is like karasuno, doesn't know what to do about that guy.

rainbow

11:08

As soon as they say that we see Daichi and Noya, just like no, we already know what we're doing. And then Ukai says to Takeda like time for a timeout.

em

11:16

Yes, and so they discuss. They notice that you know the giant can't control where he's hitting, so he's always hitting in one spot. So they move NishiNoya there, who is, of course, going to pick it up every single time.

rainbow

11:26

This is where we learn that this is Hyakuzawawa's first official match. They say that when they're in their timeout. It's just like nobody can even tell. It's your first official match. And meanwhile Karasuno is just like. I don't think this guy has played a lot of matches.

em

11:37

Is this where he makes the comment that passing is simple? Is he saying passing?

rainbow

11:40

is simple? Or is he saying that volleyball is simple Because in the dub it feels like he's saying like oh, volleyball is a very simple game.

em

11:46

I think that that is overall. In the sub, the line said passing, but I think that that makes more sense Like oh, it's a simple game, but I think that's what a lot of people could think from the outside. But it's big, we're playing mental chess on this court, okay.

rainbow

11:59

There is a lot going on. I mean, I'm not gonna lie, when I was a volleyball player, I didn't know as much about the strategy, and so, like thinking about the way I could have played if I, like knew anything about strategy, is amazing.

em

12:12

This is the moment where they're talking about that and Hyakuzawa is looking over at Hinata and Hinata is shouting like kind of yelling at Kageyama, but I feel like he's not yelling at him, I think that's just how they talk to each other.

rainbow

12:21

I don't know if he's saying it to Kageyama or somebody else, but he's just like no matter what I do, like I, you know, I just can't get around his blocks. Or I think he's like kind of feeling sorry for Hinata. Yeah, and we know that Hinata is frustrated, but the senpais know what to do, and that's when Daichi kind of tells him.

em

12:41

And Noya says it's not just about midair battles.

rainbow

12:44

And then we get Kageyama again wiggling his little fingers, which I'm going to go with, the wizard thing, yeah, yeah.

em

12:50

That's interesting. He's just like I feel good today. He's like Daichi. Can we try the new quick? I also wanted to say in the sub he calls Daichi Soamurasan. Yes, which is my horrible, sorry pronunciation of Daichi's actual last name, and I feel like is Kageyama the only one who calls him that? I feel like everyone calls him Daichi or Daisan.

rainbow

13:16

Yeah, I think so. I think Kageyama is just. He is so very formal. Yes, I think it's part of like I think he is very polite and respectful.

em

13:20

Yes, in a lot of ways not to Hinata.

rainbow

13:21

No, to everyone except for Hinata. Yeah, to all the people he thinks he's supposed to be respectful towards and like his senpai, because he even calls Asahi Azumane.

em

13:30

Yeah, he goes to Daichi and is like I'm feeling good, can we try the freak, the new quick and Hinata. I don't know what this reaction is. He's so excited yeah one of the kids on the stands was like he looks like my dog when he's really hungry. I'm like that's perfect, that's that's very accurate.

rainbow

13:48

Well, yeah, because they're always talking about how it's a hunger.

em

13:50

They have to get the ball and you know, Hinata's fucking feral and it's my favorite when they whip out the quick for the first time in front of a new team. It's so good every time.

rainbow

14:00

Hyakuzawa is like, as long as I can like get there in front of him, I'm gonna be fine. And as he's having that thought, the ball is in Hinata's hand, spiking it down on the other side and I that's like the kind of moment that makes me want to get up and cheer and like fist pump and I like have it in all caps.

em

14:17

I'm like yeah, that's right, Hinata is too damn fast for you this might have been the moment because the way I turn into my father watching sports, watching this show which is all the more ridiculous when you consider the fact that I have watched this show multiple times, but I react every time like it's the first time, so it might have been this moment too and I'm like, yeah, and then Kiki, like our cat jumped.

rainbow

14:37

I'm like, oh, I'm sorry, no, for real. I like turn into my mom watching a football game, like when I'm watching Haikyuu, just get taken away by it all. Yes, and and Yachi feels the exact same way she's so excited about she has a weird little teeth oh, I said Yachi's making like a sister face to the one that Hinata just made of.

em

14:55

that like weird excitement oh my god.

rainbow

14:57

yes, Because they are the same person in so many ways.

em

15:01

But I also want to just say, like the way that Karasuno is analyzing and then adapting, honey it's giving, oba Josai it's giving high level.

rainbow

15:11

It's because they, it's because they are like, they're like batman and every time listen, this works, because every time batman faces a foe, he, he might not do so well at first, but then he learns from that interaction and he, he, he, he brings never mind no I. This is not working.

em

15:32

Anyway, I'm enjoying it?

rainbow

15:33

Nope.

em

15:36

I'm losing the thread very quickly. Well, that's fine, because now we're at the commercial break.

rainbow

15:41

Yes, we are Cut out. So much of that, please. So we come back and Hyakuzawa is shook by Hinata's prowess.

em

15:50

As everybody is. And also this is another cute Kagehina moment, because Hinata is like Kageyama kun, are we on our, are we at the top of our game? And like we have TanaNoya in the background, just like hyping them up. And then of course, Daichi's like shut up everybody. And what does Kageyama say to Hinata? Does he even nothing? I think he's just he. It all happens very fast. I think he just kind of looks at him and then Daichi yells at them and that's that's it. He's never ready for.

rainbow

16:12

For Hinata to be, because that's a little bit of praise for Kageyama too. It is.

em

16:17

Hyakuzawa says why is he above me right now? Ooh, I love that Because it's about timing, bitch. Let me get a little refresher on tempos.

rainbow

16:27

Yes, and like I just love that this is such a clear example of yes, height is needed for volleyball in certain ways, like you know. But the how do you get that height? Is not determined just by your body, like the size of your body, like Hinata can get even higher than you, and it's not just about having that like natural athleticism, which is something Hinata had to learn very early on, and Hyakuzawawa is just a little bit behind him in that regard.

em

16:54

I like that. You say that because Hyakuzawa reminds me of Hinata, like early Hinata where and I think it comes later on where he says like, and we'll talk about it more but he kind of says like I have this one weapon and what? I'm I'm new, but I score points and that's why I'm here and I'm like, well, that that was Hinata, but now Hinata's learned another lesson or two, and you gotta learn some lessons. Anyway. But getting ahead of myself, we have Tsukki having a cool little moment. Hyakuzawa is in the back row and while he's in the back row, the midair battles belong to Karasuno, and you know Ukai says that. And we have Tsukki just very cool, faced, resting bitch face, blocking whatever. I don't give a fuck.

rainbow

17:31

I do God. I just love him so much because I bet that is so annoying for the guy who just shut you out to look like he doesn't even care, Like it's nothing to him.

em

17:40

I know I'm sure he's like one of the most annoying blockers for people to go up against.

rainbow

17:44

Because I think about like Kuro, because Kuro's annoying in his own way, because he's always like smirking, he's so smug about it. But there's something about Ski that is almost more smug, because he's pretending like it doesn't even matter because you want to get to people.

em

17:57

So when you're unfettered you win sometimes. So then we get, like I said, we get a refresher on tempos and we see kagehina's minus tempo quick, and grandpa Ukai is talking about it with two of his younger students and I always say it's like a younger Oikawa and a younger what is that guy's name? From Nekoma fukanaga.

rainbow

18:13

Yeah, yeah, like many versions of those, the tuxedo cat one yes, which, okay pause, because we were watching the Haikyuu movie, which everyone knows, this about the Nekoma karasuno match and I. We were talking about how, like they're different kinds of cats and I was like which one of them is the tuxedo cat? And fukanawa came on screen and m was like that one, that one, I did want to say so the kid in the blue shirt who I think is the Oikawa mini me in the dub kind of sounds like honey, senpai from oran. Sound off in the comments, if you agree, in the comment section yes.

em

18:45

And then I love what grandpa Ukai says here. He says don't go trying to copy them either. The only people ridiculous enough to pull that off are the duo with their quick. I just love being reminded that only only the combination of Kageyama's genius skill with precision and then Hinata's insanity it's the only coupling that can make this work.

rainbow

19:06

Goodbye. Is this where we have Kageyama? Tiny bit of compliment followed by big insult? Absolutely, he recognizes that Hinata worked on a lot of stuff at the training camp.

em

19:16

Well, so, because Hinata asks Kageyama why did you ask me if I was really worried about this game? Is it because you knew you were feeling good today? And he kind of is like, well, I knew I was feeling good, but you've been doing a lot of training, haven't you Like on other stuff too? Basically saying like well, you worked really hard and you're working on your basics, so he's just not like he feels like he can rely on Hinata more, I feel like, and he doesn't have to worry about Hinata as much. Yeah, which is Kageyama language, for I never have to worry about you, my loving husband and then what does he say?

19:45

immediately after that, oh, but he follows it up with saying but your first faint got blocked really easily.

rainbow

19:50

Oh yeah, that's right yeah, and I I know what you are, Kageyama Tobio, we see right through you. We're at the end of the first set and Daichi is just being such a steady force on the court and he reminds Noya that for every point that Kakugawa gets, karasuno will get it back, and that they've added so many weapons to their arsenal and that's why they're able to do this.

em

20:11

He's just a good captain. What can we say? Kagehina cinched that first set with their quick. So moving on to the second set, and they're fighting hard, but Hyakuzawa was only getting more fired up. He thinks to himself that all he has is this one power. But he can score points. So that's what he must do and that's what I was saying.

rainbow

20:33

You know he's comparable. Like he wasn't into it, he didn't care, he was just kind of like Just a flat affect. Yeah, and like very much just going through the motions. But now he's like he's into it and he's like trying and he's putting in the effort. He's no longer just like, oh, I like all I have is this strength.

20:48

He's like thinking about how he wants to use that strength to win this is what we call the Hinata effect he does this to like every person he plays with and that's why Kageyama loves him so much and that's why they're rivals. Because this is what Kageyama wants is to feel that there's a part where Daichi kind of manipulates tanaka and Hinata into getting all riled up.

em

21:07

He's saying he overheard someone in the crowd talk about how short their front line is oh yeah, because they're at a point in the game where they have their shortest blockers in the front. He's like, hmm, even average height would look short in front of that guy.

rainbow

21:21

Is probably what they're thinking up there yes, Daichi says if we can't block the ball, receive it. And so they use a soft block, the plate, the plate method. Yes, that makes it so that they can receive it. And then I think this is where Hinata goes to spike the ball. It's just like a normal quick, I think, and he's got Hyakuzawa and like two other blockers right in front of him, but he goes for Hyakuzawa's fingertips and gets that, that block point.

em

21:52

They win that way. So Hinata does get that the winning point, and I also love. There's a shot where Hyakuzawawa is looking back in shock and Hinata is like behind him on the ground with his legs and arms up in the air. But then Hinata says to himself I was able to score a point with something other than the quick. And I feel like that really compares him to Hyakuzawa, who still really only has this one weapon, but who still really only has this one weapon. But now Hinata, through his own insistence, he has really made a few more weapons for himself.

rainbow

22:18

Well, and that's kind of what Kageyama was saying. You know he's like I know that you trained with a lot more than just our quick attack, because that was something you know that was a part of the training camp was them getting their new quick attack in shape. But he was also learning from Bokuto. We see a little flashback of him learning from Bokuto about doing the fingertip thing and I'm just so proud of him, Like he's just growing so much right before our eyes.

em

22:38

He's a little volleyball sponge. You know he's taking it all in. I also love Asahi picks Hinata up in celebration when they win Really yeah, he picks him up and Hinata has like this kind of like look on his face.

rainbow

22:51

It's very cute.

em

22:52

Wait Asahi, oh okay, yeah, no, I didn't notice that at all yeah, he picks him up a little bit and then Kageyama's looking all like proud in the background. It's very, it's very cute oh but of course, you know what? I've probably seen a screenshot of that yeah, but of course Kageyama can't help but give Hinata shit. Says like stuff about. You know you're getting a little bit better at offense, but your digs and your like your receives still suck.

rainbow

23:13

I have the line from the dub, which is you've gotten pretty good at attacks, but your receives are still dogpile.

em

23:18

Yeah, yeah, he just can't stop. And then like making fun of him because I think at one point he gets hit in the face and he's like defend, don't defend with your face. And like makes fun of the little noise he makes. And then TanaNoya, the older brothers of the group jump in to like make fun too, and inoshita is like how's your summer homework coming along? Like the father he is, yes, and that humbles tanaNoya right away. We're really like we'll have to talk about it more in the spoiler zone, but like this episode, for some reason in particular, was just making me have so many thoughts about, like what their next year will look like, when the third years are gone and the second years kind of take over, and like what teams will come back because Ukai makes a comment that Hyakuzawa will be very scary next year. Like it'd be so interesting to see like how the team dynamic changes with the change in players and then who comes back stronger. Yeah, I don't know. I was having a lot of thoughts a lot of thought daughters.

rainbow

24:14

I have a little note about that too, because when TanaNoya start making fun of Hinata too, I feel like Kageyama almost like has a little bit of like oh, I didn't realize you were listening like maybe that was like a moment between the two of them and that could just be projection, but that's what I saw.

em

24:29

I could totally imagine that and I feel like I could totally see Kageyama getting lost in like their little bubble and then being kind of embarrassed when he realizes oh yeah, people can see me being very sibling rivalry. But also like pulling hair on the pigtails on the playground with my not volleyball boyfriend. You guys know how it is it's just here's.

rainbow

24:46

the thing is that it is so ridiculous and like he does it so much in this episode where it just feels like he like wants to have interaction with Hinata, but he doesn't know how to do it in a way that isn't like antagonistic, but he like it does feel like he's really enjoying himself when he's having these interactions. I know, oh, this is when he's starting to realize that he has feelings. I think. I think this is the very beginning of it, but he doesn't know what to do with it.

25:19

And now my least favorite scene of the season, Kiyoko is cornered and harassed by some punk ass bitch while trying to get Hinata's left behind lunchbox. Yeah, and like because she she tells Yachi that she's gonna go see if they forgot anything and then, as the team is walking away, Hinata realizes he did forget his lunchbox, so he goes back for it, and then we see her getting like it's literally cornered by two of these like random volleyball guys yeah, and like the one guy's like trying to get her number they're towering over her and they're like can we have your number?

em

25:42

and she's very much like no. And they're like come on, like I fucking hate this scene so much I hate it.

rainbow

25:48

And then so Hinata comes up and he's like, oh no, and tanaka and Noya, her knights in shining armor, I guess, aren aren't here to protect.

em

25:54

It's so cute because Hinata, he doesn't want to have to be the one, but he has to, and so he does it. Scared, he jumps in front of Kiyoko, but he's like shaking and he's like please leave our precious manager alone.

rainbow

26:07

Well, it's so funny because I think his first instinct is to be like, come on, Kiyoko, it's time to go, and he's like pushing her away and like running away. And then Terushima, that's his name. We don't find out his name yet, yes, but Terushima like grabs him and is like flings him out of the way.

em

26:24

Yes, and then Hinata jumps in front of him and he does this big jump and, of course, like the volleyball gay he is, this guy completely forgets about Kiyoko and is like, hey, you're the guy that took down the tall dude. Yeah, he's like oh, I can't wait to play with you. We don't know the name of the team yet, but they were good enough where they didn't have to do any of the prelims and they were like top, maybe top four, unless this guy's just bragging and making shit up. Yeah, he says top four. I don't know. I kind of believe it. Yeah, because we will go against this team, but we're getting a little hint into their philosophy of if we do match up, let's have a good time, let's have fun and they're real good time guys I wish that Terushima weren't an annoying prick.

rainbow

27:00

I just wish they didn't do this Kiyoko scene and this happens a lot where, like the harassment, the treatment of women, like violence against women, harassment against women is like used as a plot point once you know they have their little moment and they fuck off.

27:13

Kiyoko apologizes to Hinata for like the inconvenience she's like I'm sorry about that and like that just annoys me it's just patriarchy, yeah, and it's just like the expectation that, like, it is a woman's job to not be harassed by men, it is not men's job not to harass women and yeah, and it does that because it like sucks, because outside of this, like I do think ter Terushima is an interesting character, but like it is, it is tainted by this and this doesn't have to happen and this happens with so many side characters that just have these like creepy fucking moments with Kiyoko, and I just don't like them.

em

27:44

I don't find them funny or charming and I it makes me dislike the characters who do it. Yeah, we're just angry feminists, yeah, exactly. And if you like Terashima, wow, groundbreaking, you like a blonde asshole.

rainbow

27:58

Yeah.

em

27:58

Shut up.

rainbow

27:59

I've seen like a couple, like TikTok things where it's like this is what your character says about you, and it's just like he's the one where it's like honey, I get it, he has a lip piercing, but it's 2016. Or it's 2020. And now it's 2024. And I do love the little thing about like his lunchbox rap where she's like, oh, it's very cute. And he's like, oh, it's my sisters.

em

28:20

I know, and Rainbow and I had a whole conversation of like, isn't that like the opposite of how hand-me-downs should work? And then we're like, well, either Hinata just likes the girly things, or just like wasn't paying attention and just grabbed whatever there was, or his mom just put it together for him, or something. But I just like to think he just likes cutesy things because he's a cutesy boy.

rainbow

28:37

And then I think this is when Tanaka and Noya realize how long it's taking Kiyoko and they're like we don't like this.

em

28:43

Yeah, boys, where were you? Where was the protection squad? Yeah, ridonculous Failing, that's what you were doing, but you know, she should be able to just go get a lunchbox without being cornered.

rainbow

28:56

What if we could just walk around in the streets and be safe? We see this team of assholes with their yellow pants and they kind of square up a little bit with Karasuno and I do, I will say, the look that Terushima and Daichi share. Right, there is a little bit of like a rare pair material.

em

29:14

Daichi is always having moments with the captains, because I think toro shima is the captain yes, yes, yes, Daichi, with all other captains I feel like this team is like the cooler, hotter version of ogi minami. Yes, because they're both like the whole bad guy thing, but like the ogi minami looks like a bunch of old dudes that like hang out outside of like a poker hall, yeah, whereas these guys are more of the typical, like what you would think of, like a high school bad boy.

rainbow

29:39

Yeah, the Ogie meeting me. Guys look like yeah, they look like they're old school gangsters. Yes.

em

29:44

Yes, they look like they stepped out of the set of the Sopranos and said hand me the volleyball.

rainbow

29:51

We're walking here, and then that's that's the end of it.

em

29:55

That's the episode. They've made it. They've made it through the prelims, hala, all right. So jumping into manga versus anime not too much to talk about, I will say. In the manga, suki has a flashback to his brother. When they're breaking down Hyakuzawa's height and the power that that has, I think they give some of the exposition to Suki's older brother talking about how taller guys can make or break a game. So that's just like a little thing. I think they ended up just giving more of those lines to Grandpa Ukai or something. A lot of common small changes between the manga and anime is really just what background character is giving the exposition. That seems to be what changes the most.

rainbow

30:29

Well, and I find that interesting. Like that is I like I wonder why in the manga it's like just randomly given to Akiteru.

em

30:36

I wonder if that's supposed to like keep things interesting or maybe just keep a kitaru in our mind and it might be more of like maybe they didn't in the anime. Whatever, it was just easier to not have him do it whatever.

rainbow

30:46

Yeah, they don't have to animate a whole nother character and pay another voice actor, exactly that makes sense.

em

30:51

And then I already talked about the full quote about a creepy old guy deciding what to grope first. Oh, when Hinata says that thing about, are we at the top of our game, Kageyama-kun? In the manga it says hot, you are on fire today, mr Kageyama-kun. Sir, not hot, I'll kill someone. He said oh, he should have like touched him with his finger, went so hot fire today. And then another just interesting thing is at the end of the game in the manga, Towada and ogi minami, I guess, are just like on their way out and they're like watching. And Towada reflects on how when he ran into Hinata for the first time he thought Hinata was just like a spazzy idiot. But he's the fool, he's just like I was the idiot and that's all it is.

rainbow

31:37

But like that didn't happen in the anime well, I feel like that's something I remember from the manga is there is a lot of like, the last team that they played watching their game, like, we see that, like during the Nekoma game we see the, the player, the team that they played before them, some of their players watching them, and I think that just happens a lot more in the manga and again with the anime. It's probably like, well, we're not animating those characters in that scene and we're not going to pay the voice actors to do that so that is manga versus anime all right.

32:08

Well, thank you very much, and that was chapters 103 through 105. It looks like. Thank you, yes, it was. You're welcome. I'm happy to say as long as you put them in there and now for a special segment.

32:19

Yay, yes, okay. So finally, this is the last time that we are going to hear this opening and ending for season two, and so the opening we have the song is I'm a believer by spire, which just makes me think of yes, and Spire. They do a lot of Haikyuu songs and, as far as the lyrics, I really only found like one or two lines that really stood out to me that I wanted to talk about, which is, looking out at the world around me, I feel like I'm the only one being left behind, yeah, which really makes me think of the beginning of season two, which I season two feels so long right now, because it's like we already talked about the fight and it felt so long ago.

33:09

That's how I felt when I was going through the episodes to get to 13, I'm like, wow, we've we've gone through it, we've really gone through it, and they've changed so much because the song goes on to say I am paraphrasing here, so what if others are ahead of me? Like, I'll catch up?

33:23

that's kind of what, like, the song ends on, which is exactly what we see, and that doesn't just apply to Hinata, that applies to karasuno, because during the training camp, you know, they were just like sucking and sucking but they slowly were getting better towards the end. You know, they almost had Fukurodani you know, in their hands, but but now they're here at these prelims and they're fucking killing it, and so in the animation we just I really like thinking and talking about the different visual motifs or the visual things that we get. That really kind of sup this part of the season which, like we have hin, he's running on his way to the Karasuno gym. We see, you know, the team practicing and it's like cutting to them, doing different things, and at one point it's Hinata and Kageyama Like setting their water bottles down at the same time, looking at each other and then turning to like run over to Yachi, clearly to go practice their quick, and it's really cute. And it's really cute. We see them doing their flying digs as their punishment.

34:17

We see Yachi like watching a game and then being like her hair being blown back, almost as if there's wind blowing in her face, and I just think that's her being blown away by Karasuno's growth. Perhaps. We see the Karasuno and Nekoma teams practicing, some of the other Kanto players, including BokuAka. We have the coaches and psycho drinking at an izakaya and Ukai and one of the other coaches are just in the back with their beers like clearly afraid, clearly afraid, clearly like oh no, we're not going to be able to keep up. We have the all the managers cutting watermelon and Yukie is there eating one, and then it kind of ends with karasuno facing off against Fukurodani, and then they bow and they rush out onto the court. But I thought that was interesting how like it really does kind of follow along with how the that this part of the season goes because we end the training camp with them facing Fukurodani and I.

35:10

I just can't help but wonder. I wonder if it's like a contract thing for like how long they license the song. But it feels like this ending really should have ended with the training camp, like it feels weird that it's ending when we're in these like preliminary matches.

35:24

Well, maybe they're kind of like that's how they're grouping it together, because we are, because it is still in the summer and we're technically in the first half, and yeah, because now after this, we are waiting and we're going to jump forward to October, that's true, okay, no, that makes sense, and I feel like these two episodes and these two teams that they've played are supposed to kind of show us like, okay, we just watched everything they learned in this training camp and here's how they're up, like we're proving that, like they're ready, right with these, so we're ready for the next every step in this story has a purpose, and that's what makes Furudate such a strong writer.

35:59

Yes, okay, now I want to move on to the ending. I don't have quite as much, but this song is climber, by galileo galley. you know, no relation to the, astronomer, and just a few of the lines that we have from this song. We were climbing our mountain and more than just time was getting worn down, but once we learn of freedom, we'll wish to fly. Oh, and I thought that was very interesting, wow, and then, you know, we just have, you know, Hinata biking through the fog and he's running, and this is one of those ones where it's like keeps cutting back to Hinata running.

em

36:41

And every time we cut back to it there's like more of karasuno running with him, but it's always like Kageyama next, yes, and then the other first years, and then the second years and the third years yes, it's always Kageyama.

rainbow

36:46

Next it is yes, it is always Hinata, immediately followed by Kageyama, where it's just the two of them. We also see Kageyama practicing alone. as always, we see like, we see a little montage of, like, some of their opponents, you know, like Kuroo and Kenma and BokuAka and UIshijima, like it was like the mountain top.

37:02

Yes, exactly, yeah, I love that, and then we have Hinata reaching for the sun and we see all of karasuno and they're like standing on a like a mountain of garbage. It's like a giant garbage heap is what it looks like, because you know they're, they're from the dumpster, they're poor you.

em

37:21

You look poor, hey, you look poor. It's time for our character spotlight and I'm gonna be walking us through this one. Today we're doing none other than lenny himself, Hyakuzawa Yudai, and this is from the haikyuu wiki. His personality In contrast to his intimidating appearance, Hyakuzawa is very self-spoken and kind. He also seems to be a serious and mild-mannered person, which can be seen from his respectful demeanor to his seniors. He doesn't react much other than a simple acknowledgement that he's listening, even when his seniors openly praise and brag about him being an asset to the team. Aka, this guy's got no personality, no, so his name, meaning the family name, Hyakuzawa, hyaku means hundred and zawa could mean wetlands with shallow or an uneasy atmosphere. I'll tell you, if I saw this guy at the end of a hallway, I'd be uneasy yeah, it was um.

rainbow

38:13

It was hard to find his name breakdown for this one, but and I did I did think that hyaku was 100. Yes, that makes sense, um. And I noticed the kanji and I was like, okay, yeah, so, 100.

em

38:27

Uneasy atmospheres 100 shallow wetlands.

rainbow

38:31

That's him, and then his given name, yudai means brave and manly well, I did kind of think maybe the hyaku was because he's 200 meters tall and that's got 100 in it.

em

38:42

He's not 200 meters tall, he's two meters tall, he's 200 centimeters oh so yudai means brave and manly.

38:52

Kirishima from my hero would love that. That's just a wink to my my hero girlies. So, anyway, we have his character sheet and I don't know, do I find you interesting? No, I feel like it's like is there more behind the mask and I think there's less. That's a seinfeld quote. okay, so to his little character sheet. He is, of course, kakugawa academy, class one six, which might be a smart one. His position, of course, is wing spiker, height six, seven, or, as we said, 200, 200 meters.

39:25

No, okay, he's 200 centimeters or two meters he's 200 feet tall, he weighs 194 pounds and his birthday is april 3rd, so he's an aries, which is interesting. Aries usually has personalities, but who knows what his moon sign is? His favorite food is yakisoba. No, my yakisoba. What is that from?

rainbow

39:47

that's from this show. Yamamoto bets like inuyaka and the other kid that oh yeah, but that karasuno doesn't have a cute girl manager. And then Kiyoko shows up and they're like yay, yakisoba oh, my god.

em

40:04

Well, that's his favorite. And then I always say how the current worry gives us such insight. If this doesn't tell you that this man is a cardboard box of a personality, his current worry is receiving is hard, which I think is the concern of most volleyball players, my guy, but you're right, it is hard. Buddy, why don't you go stare at a wall for a few hours until you feel better? Why don't you watch some paint dry? I don't watch the grass grow a little bit? This guy is your love, I like. I, yeah, because I have nothing personal against him. He's just so nothing. He's like I'm paul, okay. So his ability parameters, his power and stamina is a four. No surprise there, that is his biggest best skills and then his jumping's a three. His intelligence and speed are two, and then his technique is a one. He is a baby boy that is almost seven feet tall, and that's our. That's our boy. We won't see you again. Well, no, we will see you again. Anything else you want to say about Hyakuzawa?

rainbow

41:08

he's really big and tall. I do agree that he's pretty boring, but I didn't realize how boring until you started for the world's favorite game.

em

41:18

It's who in haikyuu? This week's scenario is inspired by our trip to the ren fair at the beginning of the month. We meant to do this a few weeks ago but, classic us, we forgot. So it's. What kind of costumes would they wear, slash? What kind of booth would they run? You know there's a lot of different aesthetics at a ren fair. It was the first time for both of us going and there are, of course, you know, barmaids and stuff like that. But then there's, like, you can do a pirate aesthetic, you can be an ogre, you can be a big titted witch, like there's just so many things you can be. It was.

rainbow

41:49

I loved it. I love nerds so much like. Dorks and geeks are the best people in the world. It was amazing and I can't believe I hadn't gone before them. I did almost get heat exhaustion, but that's not the renfrew's fault, that's. That's global warming.

em

42:06

That's why I was at 100 on october 5th oh so Hinata, I think Hinata would get very into it.

rainbow

42:12

I think he would dress up.

em

42:14

I'm just picturing him like running around the renfrew like a little animal, like he there's just so much to see and I think he would dress up. I'm just picturing him like running around the run for like a little animal, like there's just so much to see, and I think he would either be like a creature or like a wizard type thing.

rainbow

42:24

I could see him as like a wizard type or like a like. Maybe he would do like a pirate or like a like a knight thing. I could see him. I could see him wanting to go in full armor but not being able to handle it.

em

42:37

I feel like he would be one of the guys that pushes that big swing.

rainbow

42:41

Okay, well, I have some, I have some. Yeah, he would be one of them. Okay, we can talk about who all we think would be pushing the big swing. Cool, Kageyama. I think he would go very simple, yeah, like a simple villager kind of look. Yeah, I think he'd do something to the point where it's like you could almost be like, well, those are just normal clothes, but like he gets away with it. But I think he would be. I think he would like be very knowledgeable and I think he'd be really mad if things were not period accurate.

em

43:10

Yeah, I'm trying to like. I don't know how to place him. What would he be doing at the run fair? What kind of booth would he be running?

rainbow

43:17

I don't know if he'd be running a booth. I think he'd be a part of, like the queen's guard or something. Yeah, but like he would just be. He would not be like the, the head of the guard and would like maybe take his role a little too seriously yeah, absolutely, and he and Hinata would do all of the like they would do all the little they would do axe throwing and fencing and archery and everything would be a competition. Yes, they would do eating contests with all of the different kinds of food.

em

43:42

Oh, they'd definitely be getting a turkey leg oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, they'd eat.

rainbow

43:45

They'd be double fisting turkey legs. Oh, I love that Daichi. I could see him like carrying around a big like mug of, yeah, a mug of mead. Yes, absolutely, and I think he would be what? Would he run any of the?

em

43:59

booths. I could see him doing that.

rainbow

44:01

I can really see him being the type to be like come in, get your wares I could also see him being like I well, I could see him being the head of the queen's guard. Oh, fuck yeah, and Suga's the queen? Yeah, Suga's, absolutely. I was well.

em

44:15

I was also thinking fairy princess, yeah for Suga, but Suga also, yes, as the queen I could see Suga doing like I don't even know if this is a thing that happens at the run fair, but like a crystal ball, like absolutely.

44:26

We definitely passed a booth that was like fortune telling, tarot readings yeah, or like either that, or he's doing something with the acting, like he's putting on performances oh, I was gonna, yeah, I was gonna say maybe he's a minstrel and he's doing like a little, a cute little like dance with his fiddle.

rainbow

44:39

Yeah, tanaka is pirate, all the way.

em

44:43

Yeah, absolutely, he's also pushing the big bend, the big ride yeah, yeah, he's one of the ones.

rainbow

44:48

Yeah, and listen, I don't know if they do that. I don't think they do this at every single ren fair, but I hope they do that, do it at a lot of them, because it was so cool. It was like basically just a bench that you sat on and just big beefy guys pushed you and like four other people. Tanaka would be one of those guys. I think he would be.

45:05

I feel like he'd get pretty drunk off mead early on in the day. He'd get really drunk and try to do axe throwing and Daichi would have to tell him no, and then yeah, and then he'd eat a lot of food. He would definitely be eating a lot of turkey legs.

em

45:17

Noya is walking around with a journal rating all the boobs. I don't know if you guys know about Ren Faire A lot of tits.

rainbow

45:26

Oh it is, yeah, a lot of tits. It's a tit friendly organization and I'm not mad about it? No, no, no know, but Noya would be having a fucking field day. No, yeah, Noya would be having fun. I think he would do a lot of like sword fighting and axe throwing, he would be doing, the, because they had one of those like strong man things where you like, hit the, hit the thing to get the bell to go up.

em

45:47

He would be. He would be winning Asahi a prize oh, he would be.

rainbow

45:49

Yeah, he tried to win Asahi a prize every everywhere they went.

em

45:52

Now Asahi is definitely one that has like a quiet, cute booth and is selling his wares.

rainbow

45:57

Yes, he is selling like he makes, like really beautiful clothes. He's selling like 75 dollar cloaks and, like you know, beautiful corsets, everything like made, you know, very delicately and beautiful. Kiyoko is also a queen contender. Absolutely, I think, yeah, I think she would look very regal. Yes, I think she's. I could see her having like a jewelry booth or something like that yeah, oh I she's selling like weapons. That's what I want Kiyoko to sell hell yeah.

em

46:28

Yes, I want Yachi to do it with her too, but I want Yachi to be way more masculine in her dress up oh yeah, okay let's let's talk about Yachi.

rainbow

46:34

Yachi is Kiyoko's knight in shining armor oh my god, she would look so cute in like a little knight's outfit.

em

46:41

Yeah, I could absolutely see that yakuza is like if they had an executioner thing going on he's something scary.

rainbow

46:50

I was thinking ogre, yeah yeah for sure, poor, poor Hyakuzawa. Oikawa is also the queen.

em

46:58

Fuck, yeah, yeah. And Iwaizumi is his top knight.

rainbow

47:00

Yeah, Oikawa is definitely like he owns that place. He is like make, he has fucking people going. He has first years going ahead of him and like clearing the way for him.

em

47:11

Oh yeah, Kendaiji and Kunami. Yeah, but he's also totally bitching about how it's hot and it's also dusty. Do you guys know about renfair?

rainbow

47:18

because I was coughing up brown yeah, it was so dry and dusty. Yeah, it was rough. We were also in the valley.

47:25

So I think Iwaizumi and Daichi are putting on like shows for people Iwaizumi is definitely axe throwing and excelling at anything that he's trying to do I think Iwaizumi is axe throwing and like bringing a crowd in, because you know he rolls his sleeves up to show off his biceps because he loves to do that. Oikawa is just sitting there fanning himself like watching it happen. Oh my god, I listen. If there's art out there of Owaisumi throwing an axe, he doesn't even have to be wearing Rin fair clothes, but just you, you know, you know where to find us. Kinra is like going as, like a mage or something. Yeah, I was also feeling like something magical for him. Yeah, he's going as, or like a paladin or like some some kind of video game character type thing, and he's like going and he's like acing.

48:13

uh, I don't, there was like a maze, but that wasn't really. That didn't really require a strategy. Yeah, I know that was pretty simple, yeah, but yeah, I think he's. What kind of booth would he have if he ran one? Would he sell anything?

em

48:25

I just feel like Kenma would find somewhere to go sit for most of the time.

rainbow

48:29

Yeah, he would find. Yeah, he'd go somewhere to sit in the shade.

em

48:32

You're right.

rainbow

48:39

Kuro would definitely be like wearing something like piratey or and outrageous. I think he would go all out, I think he would go full nerd for this. Like he yeah, he's the one dragging Kenma with him and like finding shady spots, and like bringing Kenma lots of water and food and making him eat like throughout the day while he goes off and has fun with Bokuto. Because I think kuro and Bokuto they would be in like the 21 plus area. They would be like the whip guy. Have you seen the whip guy? No, oh, my god.

49:02

Okay, there's a guy he like works at, like he goes, he he does the circuit at Ren Fairs and he tells like dirt, like he tells like dirty jokes and he like turns like songs into like dirty parodies and he has a whip. huh, well, that's. I think that's the the deal anyway. but yeah, they're like doing that kind of stuff. Yeah, yeah, because Bokuto is also dressing up and getting into it and being very silly and he's also pushing that swing. Oh, oh, my gosh, he's pushing the swing like it's nobody's business Akaashi is getting in line for that swing over and over again Akaashi just keeps coming back for more

49:35

Yeah, Akaashi, and I think Akaashi would like, would kind of be like Kageyama, like kind of a low-key, but, like you know, it looks very good I could see him. I could see him selling like books or something I definitely see him as a merchant yes yeah, okay. Well, we finally did the run fair one, yes, and I know that a lot of these characters were not ones that we saw in this episode, but I was like, well, I need to talk about them. It's our classic.

I have a couple of things. So Grandpa Ukai says the thing about Kagehina are the only ones able to carry out an attack as preposterous as the minus tempo quick. But we learned in season four that that's not true, because the twins do it.

em

50:48

The twins do it and that's going to be a whole conversation when we get to season four. Yes, but it's like okay, so am I supposed to interpret that as kagehina have a bond similar to twin brothers, or are the twin brothers in love? That's always what I think whenever we're like, oh my god, the twins can do it. I know we're supposed to be like oh, that's how intense kagehina's bond is, is they're like twin brothers?

and like I think that just shows that, like on the national scale, like oh, we're at another level, yes, but then also when Hinata wins the game for them, and he has that line about like I just got a point with something other than the quick set, it makes me think of the Shiratorizawa coach who tells Hinata without that set, or Kageyama, I don't, I think you're worthless on the court. Basically, and I think this is and I think at the beginning, I think for most of season one, that's how Hinata felt. I think that's what leads to him wanting to open his eyes during the quick and leads to their fight is because he's like I need to be able to do this without you, specifically, yeah, like I need to be able to fight on my own and not be worthless. And you know, I think this shows that even before he's heard that, I think it's Washijo.

51:58

Washijo yeah yeah, Washijo, before he even hears Washijo say that it's already not true yeah, oh, absolutely.

52:04

I think he's way harsher on Hinata than he needs to be, but we're gonna have so much to talk about in season three and four.

em

52:10

Yeah, absolutely oh. I'm so excited. Doing this podcast is so great, because every once in a while I think about the fact that, like, we're gonna get to talk about all of it I we're gonna watch every episode and we get to talk about every single one, and that's so exciting. I think that's it. You have anything else you want?
