hello everyone and welcome to fly a queer high q podcast. I'm rainbow, they she and I'm m, and today we're going to talk about season 2, episode 14, still growing, and I'm going to be honest with y'all this is, the first recording we're doing after the 2024 United States presidential election, so if at any point we sound a little down, it's just the crushing weight of fascism.
em
00:30
You know what I'm thrilled. I've been released from the weights of giving a crap about anything anymore, and now I'm ready to say things that an FBI agent would be mad at me to say. You know what?
rainbow
00:44
Yeah, you know what? Become ungovernable. I think that's what we have to do right now.
em
00:48
Oh my gosh, yeah, dear God.
rainbow
00:50
Part of how we're going to do that is by talking about gay shit.
em
00:54
I really do feel so like empowered to to be as unabashedly gay as ever.
rainbow
01:01
Yeah, I'm like the way I feel, in a way freer to be more gay, more anarchist, more feminist, like it's like what am I what? What am I even holding back for?
em
01:12
listen in a way, this podcast.
rainbow
01:13
Doing this feels more important than ever like, yeah, for real, like we're talking about a silly volleyball anime, but we're also, I think and hopefully this is true helping to create queer community and we need that now. Yes, yes, okay, and I do want to just remind everybody there is a resource list on our social medias that you can look at if you, like us, are feeling like you want to go out and do some things, please take a look at that and if you have any suggestions that we should add to that list, please let us know. We are always looking for more.
em
01:51
We are still growing. We are still growing, just like this episode and just like this nation I don't know about that. It tries to grow and then it gets stamped out anyway.
rainbow
01:59
Anyway, I don't have anything for housekeeping. Do you have anything we need to talk about? Nope, Okay, I'm ready for my recap. All right, three, two, one. It's time to transition from one tournament to the next. September and October. Fly by as Karasuno continues to build on the skills they learned over the summer. Kagama spies on Seijo the impending challenge of facing Oikawa serving to fire him up. Meanwhile, Tsukishima, motivated by Hinata and Akiteru, finally starts working on his blocks in earnest and the prelims arrive. Hinata has his most terrifying bathroom encounter yet and we get pumped for the next game. So many things happen. This episode, it is one of the like transitionary episodes that I do remember, better than some of the others.
em
02:41
There's a lot of good stuff. We meet some people.
rainbow
02:43
Yes, well, I was. I was telling him this part of season two like between when the training camp ends and the big match at the end of the season begins I tend to like skip or like fast forward through these episodes a little bit more. When I do rewatches. Again, this podcast is so great because even those episodes I usually skip. I am just appreciating them so deeply and it's never. There's no such thing as a bad episode of Haikyuu in my mind. I like every episode is a good episode to watch. There's just like there's things that I want to see, that are my favorite things, and they usually aren't in these episodes, but these have. This has so many good things.
em
03:29
Yeah, all right, let's dive right in. We start with.
rainbow
03:29
Akiteru, don't we? Yes, he is home, big brother's home, for a few days, and his mom asks why he's not at Tsukishima's game. And well, Tsukishima didn't want him there. Yeah, which you know. Do we feel that that is like Tsukishima being embarrassed of his brother being there, or do you think it's punishment for him not letting Tsukishima come to his games? When he was in high school, he, like I, didn't get to see any of your cross no games, except for the last one. So you don't get to see any of mine.
em
03:47
It's sad because that would have been something that they would have bonded over, but because it went so wrong the first time around. Yeah, it's not a surprise that he's like don't come to our games. Yeah, and also, interestingly enough, and we'll put a pin in it for now.
rainbow
04:00
But his older brother asks about Tsukishima's glasses yes, well, and Tsukishima it like, tells him about the game and how they went up against the, the 200 meter dude, and Akiteru says you were expecting to lose, weren't?
em
04:16
you? Yeah, I'm wondering if you've noticed you said the 200 meter dude god fucking damn it.
rainbow
04:23
Okay, the 200 centimeter or two meter dude, keep that in, keep all of it in and skish was like well, he has two meters, blah, blah, blah. But it's like no, you got a bad attitude yeah, I kind of I love that like because we saw some Tsukishima growth, for sure, but he's still not quite there. He still doesn't have the belief in himself that he needs just one last thing.
em
04:47
His brother invites him to practice with his like his own, like adult team or whatever. I don't know if it's like a neighborhood team, but yeah, so, anyway. So then we get into the opening.
rainbow
04:57
Yes, yeah, and it's just. I think that's one of I think it's probably the most popular song which one is it.
em
05:03
Is it it the Tobey Fly?
rainbow
05:05
Yeah, everyone loves it. Understandably, yeah, yeah. And then we get back from the opening and we're at Karasuno and who does Yachi see?
em
05:15
Yachi spots Kageyama trying to sneak away like a weirdo. He's got his sunglasses and hat on and he actually kind of scares Yachi for a second, because Yachi is scared of everything.
rainbow
05:25
Well, and Kageyama is like giving director on the set of a movie with his hat and his sunglasses.
em
05:31
Yeah, I don't know where he got this get up from.
rainbow
05:34
Oh, he's just I love him so much because that is like the dumbest disguise in the world.
em
05:38
It's like you stand out, so much and sweet, sweet Yachi points out to him Well, if you don't want to stand out at a school, what if you just wore like regular gym clothes? And I really love Kage Yachi friendship.
rainbow
05:51
It's very special to me, it's very dear to my heart.
em
05:54
They've already spent a lot of time together with her helping him train and, like I just I know that they're besties by the end of high school.
rainbow
06:01
Well, because Kage is so baby, he's such, he's like the baby of the team and like Yachi, I feel like it's just like he's this little baby bird, and she's like you know what. You are terrifying, but I will take care of you.
em
06:13
Yeah, you're terrifying, but you're also not because you're so dumb.
rainbow
06:16
Yeah Well, and I just love it's so clear that Kageyama is so worried about Oikawa. Still, he's like right.
em
06:23
So he is doing this because he's gonna go spy on a team that they'll have to go up against in the qualifiers. We all know, of course it's Seijo. He just wants to spy on them and see what they've been up to, because it's been a couple of months. While Kageyama goes to play Peeping, tom Hinata talks to Tsukishima and asks him if he thinks he can block Ushijima.
rainbow
06:42
Yes, and Tsukishima says of course not until Hinata challenges him.
em
06:46
And it's so funny because Hinata's not even necessarily trying to challenge him at all. I do love this Tsukihina dynamic here because Hinata's just being his usual pumped up self and Tsuki's being his very like. They're just such opposites where Tsuki's like, well, I might be able to block him on a fluke or something on a fluke or something, but he's just being very realistic of like he is one of the top aces, whatever. And so then Hinata's like well, if you can't do it, then I'll just have to do it. And Tsukki's like it's one thing when I say I can't do it, but when you say I can't do it, and then he like pokes him at the top of the head and I guess applies pressure to the diarrhea pressure point, the difference between how Tsukki deals with Hinata and Kageyama deals with Hinata, where Tsukki is very just like all right, I'm gonna give you diarrhea quietly, and then Kageyama's like I'm gonna grab your. They both need to touch his head, yes yeah, yeah, I do love that.
rainbow
07:31
And I just want to say about Kageyama going to Seijo, his like dark aura and him being like I'm normal, I'm normal, I'm normal is so hilarious that boy can't be normal if he tries. No, everyone is scared. You're scaring the hoes. He's giving a scary girl from wallflower, if you know, you know, oh, my gosh, okay, and I never noticed this before. But at some point Hinata, I think, when he's walking away from the interaction with Tsukishima, in the background we see Tanaka get hit in the back of the head with a ball so hard he like falls over.
em
08:06
Yes, I have that note because it fucking cracks me up every time.
rainbow
08:10
I don't think I'd ever noticed it before, or if I have, I've forgotten. But I was like oh my god, that's hysterical. We need more background comedy.
em
08:18
Yes, no, that was so good. From this interaction with Hina. Sasuki ends leaving there. I get it's like after school practice or whatever, and he leaves to go call his brother and take him up on his offer to practice with the big boys and I just love him on his smartphone, by the way.
rainbow
08:33
Okay, money, yeah, I know a smartphone in what 2012? Um? But yeah, he's just like, and I love just how serious he is. He's like, yeah.
em
08:41
I'm coming. He's, yeah, he's ridiculous.
rainbow
08:45
I love him, yeah, and so then this is when Kageyama comes back, right and okay. So I guess they're. I guess this must be like a free practice where they can just come and go as they please, because I was like do the senpai and the coaches know that he's going to spy on Oikawa, or are they just like yeah, buddy, we know, we know you got to go take a look at your old senpai, it's fine.
em
09:03
Well, I was wondering, because Hinata runs right up to him and is like how did it go? And I was reading the manga and I was hoping that there would be a scene of them like talking about this, because I think this was Kageyama's idea and he went to go. But I just want to know the conversation between him and Hinata, of him being like I'm going to go do this and Hinata wanting him, but then Kageyama being like no, you need to stay in practice, I'm gonna go I?
rainbow
09:24
here's my head canon. This is my vision. They are eating lunch together and like racing to see who can finish their food first, so that they can go and practice a little bit on their lunch breaks. And then Kageyama. They're just talking about the upcoming games and Kageyama brings up Oikawa and he's like I need to see how he's doing and it's very intense. But then you know, Hinata says something silly and they wrestle and maybe their lips brush.
em
09:47
It's fine what a great bird walking moment yes, okay.
rainbow
09:57
And then so Kageyama, you know, Hinata asks how it was, and I love this. It's one of those times where you don't see Kageyama's face for most of the time, like while he's talking until the very end and he's saying like I may never be able to beat Oikawa, and Hinata is immediately like pissed off about that and he's like no, you've got, don't say that. He's like how can you say that?
em
10:17
I love Hinata's reactions here, but then Kageyama goes on to tell him about how, when he went to spy on him, they were playing against like a college team. They were playing with a college team and Oikawa seamlessly, just like, joins this college team and just has that ability that, even if he's playing with people who don't like him or like quirky players or whatever, he just has this ability to bring out the best out of anyone, no matter what. I also just wanted to talk, really because I have a new ship. Actually. Okay, during this little flashback when Oikawa was playing the college team, we see Kindaichi and Kunami. Did you fucking notice this? Okay, they are still there at the scoreboard and Kindaichi is just like oh, but Kunami looks fucking like turned on. He is like looking at Oikawa with like these bedroom eyes and I know that he's just like this sleepy dude and that's probably what they're trying to get across. But I was reading oh, I'm going to take you later.
rainbow
11:07
No, no, no, Because here's the thing is. I also noted that, look, because he's got like a little smile on his face. He's got a little like yeah, that's right. Our setter's pretty amazing. He can just jump on to like I have a ship. I need to write a thread fic right now, like I want you to, because I am so like. That's not a ship I ever thought about, but I like the aesthetic of it a lot. That's a rare pair I am here for. I also have a note, and I don't know how this goes down in the sub, but in the dub one of the college players. I think it's like right before Oikawa joins in, yes, and he says, oh, so that's Oikawa. He looks just like I thought he would and I don't know just the way he says it. I was a little bit like. I was like do you want Oikawa? Everybody just wants.
em
11:50
Oikawa in this flashback. I'm not sure what they were trying to get across with the dub, but in the sub I believe the guy comments like oh, he's gaudy or something. Just call me a slur, I know what you mean.
rainbow
12:05
Yeah, call me a slur, I know what you mean.
12:06
Yeah, that's honestly it just it was kind of it was giving like he looks really gay, yeah, yeah is what he was giving and it's probably supposed to be like oh, he just looks like a pretty boy or something, but it's Oikawa, so he's gay.
12:16
yeah, and just you know. And so we're hearing this from Kageyama's perspective and he says again about Oikawa being able to bring out the best in his players, which is what ushi jima said about Oikawa being able to bring out the best in his players, which is what Ushijima said about Oikawa. And I think that has really stuck with him. And it kind of made me rethink Kageyama's hesitance at the beginning of the season to change the quick, like just a little bit. I still think everything we said is pretty accurate, but I'm wondering if there's also a part of him that feels like because he isn't as good as Oikawa at pulling out the best in the players, maybe he thought he was only capable of pulling out so much of Hinata and if they changed the quick he wouldn't be able to keep up and he wouldn't be able to bring out Hinata's best anymore, and I wonder if that was kind of part of it.
em
12:58
I think it was a lot more self-doubt than Hinata doubt going on. I yeah, I definitely.
rainbow
13:02
And then Hinata is pissed at the idea that Kageyama is afraid he can't match up to Oikawa.
em
13:09
He's acknowledging how good Oikawa is. But there's no like jealousy or anger, it's all awe and appreciation.
rainbow
13:16
Well, because this is when we see Kageyama's face, this is when we see the grin, this is where he's like the idea that Oikawa is so much better than him is fueling his excitement. He's like I have trained and I have gotten better, and I'm going to continue to get better and I'm excited about the prospect of beating Oikawa, who is so good.
em
13:34
And he also says something Seijo is what it is, because they've had Oikawa for three years. We're going to beat them as a team, and they've only had that team for one year Because and they've only had that team for one year, because, as Iwaizumi said it's the better six that wins. Oh girl, you're right.
rainbow
13:47
Oh so it's like, as insane as Oikawa is, karasuno is still the better team overall I think it's the thing where it's like yeah, they have Oikawa, but that's the one player that we're worried about and we have a team of six that everyone should be worried about. Honestly, a team of seven when you throw in Yamaguchi as a pinch server.
em
14:05
Who, we will see, has been working hard. So Kageyama says this and Hinata gives us the sparkly eyes up at his boyfriend, and then he runs off and he's like I'm gonna defeat you, great king. And then Kageyama yells after him like that's my line.
rainbow
14:18
And then Oikawa sneezes and Iwaizumi threatens to kick his ass if he gets a cold.
em
14:25
Which I'm obsessed with. I do like, ah, this episode is so great because I forgot how many we get to see, like everybody, and I love the iwaoi moments here, so anyway. So then we get to Tsukki with the adults. I said, after a grown man wheedles him, Tsukki reflects, he is over not being good at volleyball well, yeah, and I really love this moment.
rainbow
14:45
First of all, I love this old man picking a fight with Tsukki shima yes, and. But I like that Akiteru kind of sees what's going on and he's just kind of like I think he's motivating him the best way, he knows how, and he's just like, oh, like you're gonna take that um. And then this is where we get Tsukishima going up to Ukai to ask for help, right?
em
15:04
yes, he goes up to him and he asks a question, and it's a good one. How do you block someone when they're bigger and stronger than?
rainbow
15:09
you and he is like visibly shocked. He's like whoa Tsukishima is asking me a question.
em
15:14
So then enter stage Mad Dog.
rainbow
15:18
Mad Dog who is giving Chunin Exam's arc? Gaara, with his attitude, mad Dog has bloodlust. Okay, he has bloodlust and he wants to kill.
em
15:30
This might be the worst attitude we've seen yet I think it is.
rainbow
15:33
I think, when I post this episode on social media, I have to do a side by side of that, like first screenshot of mad dog next to a screenshot of gara, because the energies are similar, very similar, yes, very much. So I'd also just have to say if Mad Dog is Gaara, then Awai's me is his Naruto. Thank you, oh, my god, I'll bring that up when we get to that.
em
15:57
So yes, enter stage left. Mad Dog. We're back at Seijo and Yahaba calls out this angry little Gaara man who walks in and turns out this guy is really skilled but really, really bad at teamwork. He was able to make his junior high team really strong, like the one year they were good is the year they had him, but then when he joined seijo in first year, he got into it with the third years because he was very mean. Yahaba says it wasn't what he was saying. It was the way he was saying it and I wrote that this guy's kind of like a spikier, angrier Kageyama in a way, because he's yelling at his teammates and just telling them that they suck. And it's funny there's a flashback of him yelling at the past, third year Seijo and second year Oikawa's in the background like laughing. Oikawa finds Mad Dog very entertaining.
rainbow
16:43
I love that. And yeah, I think it's interesting you say that about Kageyama, because I think the thing about Kageyama like he was so angry and yelling at his teammates and stuff, but like Kageyama has like an innate like politeness to him, like he is very well mannered and respectful and respectful, yes. And so that's why it blows my mind that his coaches didn't realize something was wrong with him and tried to talk to him because there was clearly such a change in his attitude anyway. But like Mad Dog clearly doesn't have those same manners like ingrained into him. And I love the way Oikawa handles Kutani Mad Dog, because like Mad Dog says something about like oh, the third years are here, I thought you would leave after you lost the inner high, and we see Owazami, matsukawa and Hanamaki like pissed. But then Oikawa is just his usual like he's very unfazed, he's his usual like oh silly Oikawa.
em
17:34
And then he shows him his scary side yeah, Oikawa is the ultimate villain once again and scares Mad Dog with his. I said his Cheshire like villainry.
rainbow
17:43
Yes, yeah, and I just love Mad Dog like backing up and getting into a fighting stance.
em
17:48
Yeah, yahaba says, oh, his animal instinct is making him scared of Oikawa. It's like, yeah, honestly you should be. So now it is a trip to Kanto for our boys. We are going to play with some Tokyo teams while we have the time before qualifiers. Immediately, we see Bokuto who is asking Tsukki for blocks, to which Tsukki agrees.
rainbow
18:09
And Bokuto is shocked by his relative enthusiasm.
em
18:13
Yes, and Akaashi is like why are you shocked? You asked him. Then we get this flashback to Tsukki asking Ukai for help. Ukai is thrilled and reminds him the most important thing in blocking is timing. Yes, what I love.
rainbow
18:23
I feel like Ukai's reaction is very much like internally freaking out and so excited it's almost like when, like a cat comes to sit on your lap and you're timing yes, what I love. I feel like Ukai's reaction is very much like internally freaking out and so excited. It's almost like when, like a cat comes to sit on your lap and you're like especially a cat that doesn't usually sit on your lap and you're just like, oh my god, this is happening, this is happening, but you have to like, remain cool and calm because otherwise the cat will just run the other way.
em
18:44
I'll give you some insight into manga versus anime. We do get to see what Ukai is thinking. And he's thinking oh my god, Tsukishima came to me all on his own. It's so cute.
rainbow
18:54
I just love it so much.
em
18:56
Yeah, and we learn that timing is the most important aspect and that Kuro is a master at it yes, the best, because Ukai is like well, I can explain it to you all day long, but I can't really show you. The best example near us would be Kuro and Tsukki joins all of our beefos trio. We go back to Kuro who's like hey, how long are you just gonna watch? And it's like Kurosuki, you better watch yourself honestly like this.
rainbow
19:20
This watch through is really, really giving me the Kurosuki, because I noticed it too, like Tsukishima is carefully observing everything Kuro says and does, even when he's not actively like playing with them. He's like seeing what kuro is doing and it's like, honestly, I get it.
em
19:35
It's like all right, maybe you cooked a meal, I don't know. Anyway, it's montage time. Our boys work on individual practice. They go against the neighborhood teams. Tsukki continues practicing against the adults, taping up his fingers like a tough guy and and by the end of September the quick is getting better and Yamaguchi is working on his serve as well he actually gets Noya to miss.
rainbow
19:56
Yes, and even Noya is like holy shit.
em
19:58
Well, that is a huge achievement.
rainbow
20:00
Well, because the thing is, Noya doesn't even get a hand on it, Like it doesn't even touch Noya.
em
20:10
That's how good of a float serve it was and I just love that, yes. And then we get to mid-october where they're having a practice game with Nekoma and kuro says to Kenma, at long last, we can't let our guard down around them. This episode really I mean Furudate paced this.
rainbow
20:21
I feel so well with their, like it didn't happen overnight, like it takes time and it's showing us that everything just takes practice, but now, like they are definitely ready for the qualifier well, and this is such a little like ken hina moment, because we see, we see Hinata going up to spike and we see him, like, making a decision in the air, and we see Kenma noticing that and being like shocked about it. And then, after the game, Hinata is complaining about being cold and Kenma's like, well, you should put your jacket on. And Hinata completely ignores that.
em
20:54
If there's one thing, Hinata won't do it's, wear a fucking jacket. It's something we've noticed.
rainbow
20:58
Yeah, he doesn't like to wear a jacket, and then this is where we get one of my favorite Kenhina moments.
em
21:03
This is where we get to see some scenes from the movie, basically because, yeah, Kenma says to Shouyou, you're entertaining. So I'd like to play a game that's not a practice game, and this is the setup for a match, where there is no rematch and we have kuro and Daichi watching their children from afar and talking about. You know, this is our last chance for the battle of the garbage dump yes.
rainbow
21:23
And then we have Bokuto telling Tsukishima he better beat Ushijima, because according to Bokuto's logic I've beat you a bunch Tsukki. So if you beat Ushiwaka it'll be like I beat Ushiwaka.
em
21:35
And Akaashi and Tsukki are just like what. This little moment where Akaashi is waving bye as Bokuto is just like yeah, I'm gonna be the best. Like they're just so married couple here, I just love them so much. Tsukki successfully shuts out the adult this is one adult in particular from his older brother's team. That has just been like antagonizing him because that's what he likes to do to his opponents and Tsukki by really like thinking about everything leading up to the hold on. I wrote this down by reading all the things leading up to the attack and timing his block. He's really working on like the mental chess of volleyball. But yeah, so everyone's getting better.
rainbow
22:14
And then we have we have Yachi showing herself as the Kagehina Wranglers because it's the end of Karasuno practice. It's time for everybody to go home. Hinata and Kageyama are practicing their quick and Daichi's like, okay, it's time to wrap it up. And Hinata's like, oh, no, but I feel like I'm just getting started. And Kageyama's like, yeah, we could keep going. And Daichi's like, oh, they make me tired. And then Yachi comes in and it's like well, if there's something you guys want to work on, you can work on it tomorrow morning. How about that? And the guys are like, yeah, okay. And then they're like, let's see how who can pick up the most balls. And Daichi and Suga just have a moment of like wow, Yachi, like you're really good at that, and it's just like I love. Even Yachi as a manager has grown.
em
22:52
She's going to be so good with them. She's going to know how to play them like fiddles.
rainbow
22:56
Oh my gosh, can we actually just get like a slice of life manga that's from Yachi's perspective, about just this lesbian who's the manager of a volleyball team?
em
23:05
Oh my God, I also at some point had a fake idea. I want, like each of the first year boys, to come to Yachi one at a time, confessing their feelings for their counterpart, and then by the last person, who would be Hinata. She, like is so, has an anxiety attack because she has all this information that she has to keep to herself and she knows that they all just need to be with each other. I love that. So now it is the day they've arrived, and Hinata, of course, is the first to run off, followed quickly by Kageyama, and Yamaguchi reads them. They work off reflex alone, like animals, and Tsukki says, like insects.
rainbow
23:39
Yeah, and then
em
23:39
Tanaka and Noya are right there just like laughing along with them. But then we see, of course, our favorite blonde, Terushima and Johzenji, and they, and Turashima clocks Kiyoko and is like hey, classes chan, make sure to give me your number. And thankfully tanaNoya are here this time and they are obviously not amused and they go to attack him. But unfortunately one of the man, one of the girl managers from Johzenji gets in their way and they freeze in mid-air, mid-attack, so funny.
rainbow
24:10
I have a note I do think that the Johzenji manager should have let tanaNoya beat Terushima to a pulp. I would have loved to see that yeah, don't, don't clean up their mess yeah, don't fucking excuse their bullshit, because she literally does she like, pushes them aside and apologizes on their behalf and, that's, that's rape culture yes, yep, it's very annoying.
em
24:33
And so then Hinata says to Kageyama they're all here, we get our first full peek at Shiratorizawa because we're seeing all the teams and we get to see everyone there. We'll talk more about that in the spoiler zone. and then we have Hinata. I'm well aware that the bathroom is where you run into dangerous people he's on a stealth mission to go pee.
rainbow
24:52
He's like okay, I don't see any enemies, it's all good. And then who walks up behind him?
em
24:56
well, and I just also love. There are four separate examples that he thinks back on. And it's meeting Kageyama for the first time, meeting Lev, meeting Tawada, and then Kageyama and Kindaichi's little moment. You really can't pee in peace before a match. You should really pee at home. But then yeah. So Iwaoi comes up from behind Oikawa says something like we should just bury this little shrimpy now while we can.
rainbow
25:18
I love the difference, because Iwaizumi is like hey, I heard you guys beat a two meter dude. See how I said two meters and not 200?. He's like I heard you beat a two meter dude. And Hinata's like yes, I mean no. And awaisumi's like okay, which is it? And then Oikawa was like we should take shrimpy out behind the gym and bury him so he won't get in the way. And it's like a horror movie, because then he like goes to run away from iwaoi and runs into who else but Ushijima, who fucking remembers him? He's like Hinata Shouyou, oh, I love it.
em
25:50
And Ushijima is being very arrogant he is reading them for filth without trying. He's like, oh, enjoy your last game. They're like, this won't be our last game, we're going to nationals. And he's like, oh, but only one team can go to nationals. And like I was like, he's not even trying to be mean and that's the worst part.
rainbow
26:06
This is where, like it's in intent versus impact, because Ushijima is not intending to be an asshole, but he is absolutely being an asshole. Yeah, and that's just Ushijima's way, and I just love how, like everyone else is like watching this happen.
em
26:23
Oh my god, yeah, they're like, oh my god, they're having a face-off and what's that little guy from karasuno doing between? Is he picking a fight with them?
rainbow
26:28
and, like Hinata, is so scared. But of course, of course, he declares that Karasuno will win.
em
26:33
He can't help himself. He has to declare victory for Karasuno, but the power of all three of them is too much and they all, like, go to glare at him and he backs away into Aone from Date Tech who is just there to offer his usual post or pre-game.
rainbow
26:47
greeting to Hinata. I love the idea that Aone was like walking by and was like oh, and like in his head is like oh, it's, it's Hinata, from it's cross-nose number 10, I need to go say hi. And just isn't even thinking about what else is going on.
em
27:00
So then we have our wakachan out where Oshijima is just like well, it doesn't matter who, we'll take your challenge. And like walks away, and Aone is kind of he. I hear him go, huh. And then he like does his little bow to Hinata.
rainbow
27:13
He's like, anyway, hello Hinata he's so cute, I love and that's just another fun like Aone and Hinata is such a fun little ship, and I love it so much. I love the idea, I like, I like the idea that Aone like saw Hinata over there, or even like Futakuchi saw him first and like was like hey, aone, like your little crush, is over there or he's like why is there a crowd in front of the bathroom?
em
27:37
I have to pee, yeah, and he's like oh, it's Hinata Shouyou.
rainbow
27:40
Let me give you the, the bow I must give you as a sign of respect for your skills.
em
27:44
So now we see the audience for all the big teams, and this is where we see the infamous guy who cheers on every team. Yes, the same NPC little guy. If you don't know, get on.
rainbow
27:54
Twitter, or it's quintuplets, who all went to different schools.
em
27:59
Oh my God, that's what I like to think.
rainbow
28:01
I think the end of this episode does such a good job of getting us hyped for this next game.
em
28:06
It's A and B court and Shiratorizawa is on a, seijo's on b, and then up next will be karasuno versus Johzenji and Johzenji is up on the court and they're like we and all excited and this is extremely niche. But for the three people who look at this, there's a tiktok series of this guy who, like, does an impression of like the anime bully and he's like baka, yeah, and like it's like, yeah, Terushima sounds like this guy. so, yeah, so that's the episode and next episode will kick butt yeah, and then you have a lot for manga versus anime manga versus anime was loaded, so let's begin.
28:45
And this is 106 to, I believe, 108. I did not finish, so thank you for putting that in just now. You're welcome. Okay, so there was just like some of these things are just little things.
28:54
When Kageyama is telling Hinata about Oikawa in the manga, he says even if I tried my whole life, I don't think I could beat Oikasan, and that's just really intense and I'll have more to say about that, actually in the spoiler zone, I think. And then the wording for when Oikawa is talking to mad dog, because in the anime he kind of he. Oikawa does this like impression of what mad dog will say in the future, which is like, oh, I'm so happy to be on a team with Oikawa-san. And Oikawa then says that's what you're going to be thinking to yourself when I'm done with you, wow. And that's when Mad Dog like jumps back in fear Pause, pause. When Tsukki agrees to join Bokuto in the manga we also have a panel of Kagahina reacting. They're like, oh, they're shocked too, and I kind of wish we had that in the anime, but that's fine.
29:44
After 107 is a bonus chapter and there's this great illustration of Akaashi, Kenma and Tsukishima announcing that there will be a bonus chapter and in the background we have Bokuto shouting woo, the apathy crew. I love that. So they need, we need an apathy crew fic. I don't know if it's out there, but, and then the bonus chapter is Tanaka is conducting a lesson on. Noya-san is so cool, why isn't he more popular? Hirata says Noya is too cool, that he's intimidating like Kiyoko, which of course, Noya loves to hear. Enoshita and asahi guess it's more because of how he's tough on himself and other people. Yamaguchi guesses it's because he's kind of childish, to which Suga agrees, saying that Noya is the type to think going hunting for bugs in the river would be a good date. A thick idea blooms in my mind Noya inviting asahi to.
rainbow
30:31
After this happens, Noya inviting asahi to go bug hunting with him yes, uh.
em
30:36
Tanaka notes that Noya is obnoxious during movies and he only likes action movies anyway. Tsukki says it's because he's noisy and Ennoshita doubles down on that. And then Kageyama, deadpan, says is it because he's short? I said hateful and uncalled for. There's a panel of just like all of them, kind of frozen, looking at him. And then it has Hinata looking very serious and saying after that day Kageyama was never seen or heard from again. And then Kageyama was in the background. Hey, I just had to buy him an ice cream bar, don't kill me off I love that.
rainbow
31:05
oh my gosh, I wish they, I wish they could have done something where they animated those cute little bonus chapters, maybe even like an after credit type thing.
em
31:14
Yeah, it's so adorable. I'd love to see that, I know. And then, in chapter 108, we are introduced to Niiyama, which, for those of you who don't know, is a girls team in Miyagi, and we don't actually meet them until season four in the anime. I'm pretty sure we don't meet them before then. Right.
rainbow
31:32
I don't think so in the anime. I don't think so. Well, yeah, no, I don't think so.
em
31:35
I don't think I even started the next episode to make sure, and I really we just like go right into the game. So I don't think so, because it's at the end of the episode that these chapters cover. This happens when you know Seijo is taking a court in Shiratorizawa, but there's a court C that does not get mentioned in the anime and that is where Niiyama is going. Suga says ah, so the queen is taking court C to Kagehina. When Hinata asks about it, Suga explains that they've been Miyagi's rep on the girl's side to nationals for years now, and that's where we see Niiyama. Yachi says they look like models. Hinata says they look really strong. Tanaka knows the queen and claims he trained her himself, but the boys humble him and clarify he was just in the same junior club as her. This is the best treatment of women we've seen yet and it's only in the manga, and we have some things to talk about in the spoiler zone.
32:24
Yes, we do For that. Yes, we do.
rainbow
32:25
Yeah, honestly, for that, yeah, honestly, and that you know I, I would have loved to see that in the anime.
em
32:31
it's like, I don't know, cut something down and I feel like that's a really good introduction for this team. And I don't I don't remember how the introduction for the team happens in the anime, because I actually hate how this is handled in the anime. spoiler alert, and it's more about this connection with Tanaka than it is about this strong team of girls. Yeah, so that's fun. So that's in the manga. So, hey, go read the manga if you don't, and if you haven't, because it's good. Yes, on to character spotlight and we got a real rando you know what?
rainbow
33:02
we really only see him in this episode and he gets a spotlight because we were struggling to think of anyone else. It's's Akisawa Go, and if you don't know who that is, based on his name, it's the old guy from Akiteru's team.
em
33:16
The one that antagonizes Tsukki the entire episode.
rainbow
33:19
And I'm going to put old in quotation marks because we learn his age later. I just looked and I'm upset.
em
33:24
They made this man sound like he was Is 47?
rainbow
33:28
Yeah, yeah, okay. So his personality, about him, other than he's not afraid to pick fights with high schoolers?
em
33:37
he likes to antagonize yeah, and it doesn't matter if you're 15, yeah, or 45 yeah, okay.
rainbow
33:45
So on his name, meaning his family name contains kanji that mean red well or waterhole, and stream, marsh or swamp, so just a lot of water going on, and his given name go means village or inlet, so I think that kind of makes sense. And I do have a note that the kanji used in his given name is the same as the name of another background player we'll meet soon but the readings of the kanji are different, so the. So it's written the same way, but, the meaning is different. Very interesting. Oh, she's shaking her head because we've got Akizawa go, who is 33. It's only 33, he's only 33. And again he's giving late 40s, early 50s oh my god, how old is Akiteru?
34:35
Akiteru's like. In his like 20s he's probably, I think he's 22.
em
34:38
As someone who is turning 31 tomorrow, I feel attacked.
rainbow
34:43
Yeah, yeah, it's like, come on, I mean, I don't know, maybe he just smoked a lot of cigarettes in his youth. His height is six feet. his birthday is february 27th, so he is a pisces, okay, his favorite food is hayashi rice, which is, I saw in the trivia, is the favorite food of another character. We haven't covered them in the spotlight yet, though, so I'm not going to say anything. Okay, his current worry is he's starting to get a little concerned about his hairline as a 33-year-old.
em
35:12
I feel like it varies with genetics for men, but it does just feel like another swipe at the age.
rainbow
35:19
His technique and intelligence are twos, as is his speed. So I see why he's on a neighborhood team, oh, and his jumping is a two as well, damn. And you're a blocker? Okay, his jumping is a three. Oh, his jumping is three. Excuse me, his stamina is a four, but his power is a five, and I think that's important for Tsukishima, because that was his question to you guys how do you go, how do you defeat a spiker who is stronger than you?
35:45
And so this guy is very strong and for Tsukishima that's what he needs. He needs to face off against strong spikers, yeah. So yeah, that's this guy we. I think. Maybe I don't think we ever see him again. Do we see him past this episode? Maybe, in a flashback, maybe, I don't know. Anyway, next episode, the next few episodes, we will definitely have more characters to choose from, but we're really scraping the bottom of the barrel for this one.
em
36:12
It's time for the world's favorite game. It's who in Haikyuu. This week's scenario is brought to us by Zale and Britt. Did they work?
rainbow
36:19
together on this. So we had two suggestions for very similar questions of like who has a driver's license, who takes public transit, and like are they good drivers if they do have a license?
em
36:32
Okay, I see, and we'll be covering Karasuno Iwaoi Aone Ushijima Bokudo, Akaashi Kuro and Kenma so Hinata.
rainbow
36:43
Do we think Hinata drives at any point? He's giving me? I bike everywhere, I know.
em
36:52
Yeah, I feel like he definitely prefers to walk and bike if he can. Yeah, I feel like walk, bike if he can, public transportation if he can, and then drive if he absolutely has to. And I can't decide if he would be responsible as he gets older or if he would be crazy.
rainbow
37:09
I mean, I think right now he should not be driving a car whatsoever, but I think, as he gets older, I think he he would do his best. I think he'd be very afraid of causing an accident. Yeah, yeah, I think he'd be a little afraid, I think it would be, but I think he'd have confidence in himself now.
em
37:26
Conversely, I think that Kageyama would never get his license and I don't think he would ever want to drive. I really see passenger princess for him.
rainbow
37:33
I do too. I think, yeah, I think he's really and we see this in the show as well that he's really letting other people take the lead on going places. Yeah, on traveling, he's having a lot of yeah, I just, I think I think he'd be so bad at directions, I think he'd be like me, yeah, not knowing which exit to get off on that sort of thing. okay, what about the other first year, Tsukishima and Yamaguchi?
em
38:00
I think they're good drivers I agree, that's what I was gonna say. I think Yachi would be a very anxious driver. I think she would try and avoid it if she could, but she, she would be responsible and everything like me. Yeah, yeah, she would be, but I think even more anxious, yeah, oh, yeah, especially like I think she would do everything she could to avoid any highways yes, absolutely. Kiyoko is fine. I think she'd be a good driver the third years. I think would all be fine. I think they'd all be fine.
rainbow
38:27
I think Suga has a lead foot. Suga is a menace on the road no, you're right. Suga is. Daichi gets out like Suga will always offers to drive, but Suga absolutely refuses to let him.
em
38:39
The first time it ever happened, Daichi got out of the car and threw up Suga is giving linda when she's driving the food truck and takes the pot, the bennies and is like hey, driving miss crazy.
rainbow
38:49
Yes, yes, abso-fucking-lutely, Suga has like a million speeding tickets for sure. I think Asahi doesn't. He prefers not to drive. I think he does much better on like smaller roads and I think he prefers public transportation.
em
39:05
I think it's Tanaka. I think Tanaka gets a motorcycle for his midlife crisis, absolutely. And then Noya. I feel like, could I think Noya can handle any vehicle operate boats? Yeah, fucking truck. Like I think he could just find any vehicle operating boats yeah, fucking truck, like I think he could just find his way around whatever he needs to do. Okay, now I want like a trucker boat or trucker Noya AU, that little guy coming out of a giant truck. I love it, oh my god.
rainbow
39:27
And also he would be. What are they called?
em
39:30
A lot lizard.
rainbow
39:30
Yeah, he'd be a lot lizard. That's everyone from Karasuno right Other. That's everyone from Karasuno right Other than the NPCs and the coaches. But coaches are fine. We've seen them drive Well. Ukai, that one time was driving back from Grandpa Ukai.
em
39:43
Oh, my God yeah.
rainbow
39:44
Like a crazy person. Yeah, and Takada is so responsible. Owazami, great driver, owazami, always driving.
em
39:53
Yeah yeah. Okawa is the worst passenger princess, though. He's always backseat driving and he's the worst at giving directions. And Iwaizumi is like don't even just fucking.
rainbow
40:05
He gets a thing so that he can just look at the gps. Yeah, he, yeah. Oikawa is always offering to navigate.
em
40:08
Iwaizumi is never accepting and I think Oikawa would be a big baby about public transport. He'd rather just take an uber.
rainbow
40:15
Oh my yeah no, he's like I. I have to sit on a bus with other people.
em
40:20
Aone, oh my god remember Aone's current worry where no one's next to him on the bus because he's scary I think, yeah, I, I think he's taking public transportation.
rainbow
40:32
I see him driving like a truck. But what if?
em
40:34
he rushes to get his license so he doesn't have to keep experiencing that. I'm gonna cry, I know I'm gonna cry.
rainbow
40:40
Oh, Aone has the driver and Futakuchi is his little passenger princess, and he drives them everywhere.
em
40:45
I feel like Ushijima would be. I feel like he'd be another one where I don't think he'd have his license you know, I know you don't think so.
rainbow
40:52
I don't think he liked driving, yeah. And also, we have to remember that Ushijima comes from money. So like he probably has drivers if he needs one, yeah. Like he can order a car, yeah, Bokuto wants to get his license, but I think he fails every time he tries.
em
41:10
Yeah, I think Bokuto is a terrible driver and I think Akaashi drives them everywhere. Yeah.
rainbow
41:14
Yeah, and I think it's another time where Bokuto like is begging Akaashi to let him driver, to teach him. I think that like is like a strain in their friendship in high school is Akaashi is like a good driver or I don't know when you get your license in japan, but anyway, Akaashi is a good driver and gets his license before Bokuto. And Bokuto's like please, like, teach me Akaashi. Like you're so patient, like if anyone can teach me, you can, and they do like one lesson. And Akaashi is like if you ever want me to set to you again, you will not make me do this. Oh, my god.
em
41:45
Kuro's definitely the driver, Kenma's the passenger, princess yeah, I don't know if Kenma would ever get around to getting his license, I think he just wouldn't.
rainbow
41:52
He will first, yeah, like well, I don't want to get into spoilers and stuff.
41:55
But he doesn't, he doesn't need it and Kuro, I think, is happy to drive, happy to drive, he's good at it, he's, maybe he, I think he's, I think he's paying attention to, like, speed traps. I think he's speeding when he can. I think he's definitely like noticing, like taking note of when there's a cop up ahead and then lowering his speed just in time to not get a ticket, and he's definitely trying to talk his way out of any tickets he might get. Yeah, Okay.
42:23
All right, well, thank you to Zale and Britt. This was a fun one. Thank you, it's always a fun one.
em
42:28
This was a real shit one.
rainbow
42:31
We should say that one day about one that we do, we decide on.
em
42:36
All right. So before we lose some of you to the spoiler zone, check us out on twitter, instagram, tumblr and blue sky at fly high q pod. That's fly hq pod. You can also email us at fly high q pod at gmailcom. Fly hq pod at gmailcom. And now spoiler zone. I loved that.
rainbow
42:59
I had to break it down okay, so before we get into my notes, do you want to talk about Niiyama?
em
43:04
so Niiyama is where Natsu ends up. Yes, Hinata's little sister, we get an illustration from Furudate after the manga of her there and because she ends up being, I think, even better than he like, Shouyou yeah, yeah, at the, yeah, especially at high school level.
rainbow
43:23
And isn't she a, a setter? I think? I think I can't remember she's the setter. If she's a wing spiker, oh well, we should have looked at it anyway. But yeah, that's the school she goes to and you know, she becomes a queen and it's, it's really great. But then, yeah, I always forget that Tanaka's friend from childhood, which that's like some major foreshadowing. We don't see that for a long time.
em
43:45
Yes, and the whole Niiyama thing completely gets lost on me, I feel like, because I hate this fucking storyline and we'll get to it when we get to it. Yeah, we'll talk a lot about it when we get to season four, but we actually had the same exact spoiler zones, so I just kind of added on to what you wrote.
rainbow
44:01
Okay, yeah, because we get Hinata not wearing a jacket when it's cold. And I think and it's interesting because Hinata is like, oh, I didn't think it would be so cold at night here in Tokyo and Kenma is like, well, that's because the sweat, like, is cooling you down more, and then Hinata ignores that.
em
44:18
But you know, like it's not good to stay cold, like you should put a jacket on this really is brilliant, like just little sprinkling of foreshadowing that it is very established that Hinata doesn't really wear a jacket and it's kind of always wilding out like he is not really taking care of himself in some ways he's not paying attention to his body and his needs the way that he should be.
rainbow
44:36
He's just so focused on Bala's life. Honestly, and I really love that Kageyama told him that the first time they met, you need to take care of yourself and you need to get stronger, and I like that. He just doesn't feel the need to remind Hinata of that over and over again. He's like that's a lesson for you to learn and that's none of my business.
em
45:02
I really like that's a lesson for you to learn and that's none of my business. I really like that about their dynamic.
rainbow
45:05
Yes, they, they both. They're not coddling each other and in any way they're the anti-coddlers. Yeah, abso-fucking-lutely.
em
45:07
And then we get our first glance at the rest of Shiratorizawa, including my best boy, Tendo I just don't like here and it's interesting because we're halfway through two and so we still have quite a ways to go before season three so like it's just interesting to see these kind of early interpretations of the boys and they look very similar. But Tendo looks like kind of different, like normal here. I don't know and maybe it's just because he's in the background and we don't see it, but like that like manic look in his eye is not there.
rainbow
45:35
Well, and the thing about Tendo, I feel, is that Tendo comes alive when he is like speaking and interacting. I think when he's just walking, you could just be like, oh, his hair is a little weird, but yeah, that's like a, that's a normal person. And then like he starts talking and you're like this is a character from a horror movie and I love him so much. I'm so y'all. I love Tendo so much. He is like like one of my absolute favorite characters, like I think he is my favorite like non-karasuno character and I cannot wait for season three. I'm gonna talk about him so much. Furudate knows that we love Tendo because he keeps coming back. Like he comes back in season four, he comes back in the movie, we see him in the manga, him and his quote-unquote best friend, Ushijima they're boyfriends, we know it anyway.
em
46:23
So yeah, that's it for this episode I think that's it.
rainbow
46:27
Yeah, you know we'll talk about Tendo and another. You know 12 episodes when we get to season three.
em
46:33
All right guys. Thanks for joining us and until next week, fly high toby, fly toby, fly.
