hello everyone and welcome to fly a queer Haikyuu podcast. I'm rainbow, they she and
em
I'm em
rainbow
and today we are going to talk to you about season 2, episode 16. Next, thank you. Next, that, plays in my head every single time I read the word next. But before we get into that, I need to gush for a second about arcane, season two. We're only three episodes in as of this recording and I'm already once again blown away by the animation. The storytelling is amazing, the voice acting is amazing. I mean, there's so many amazing things about that show, but it's just the animation just gets me. I never thought of myself as an animation nerd until recently, but oh, it's just the fluidity of the movements, the colors, it's just that you can see sweat dripping down Jace's face in one of the scenes.
em
01:03
Anyway.
rainbow
01:03
I won't go on and on, though I could, but I just wanted to say that if you aren't watching Arcane, what are you doing? Watch it. Season one amazing. Season two amazing.
em
01:14
Yeah, I feel like there'd be a lot of crossover with Haikyuu fans and Arcane and this season they really hit the ground running. They are not fucking around.
rainbow
01:30
It has been a lot of action, baby so. And the action is so good, the fight scenes are so good, it's just they know what they're doing, okay? well, I think I. That's all I have for chit chat. Do we have anything for housekeeping? Well, the metaphorical house is clean the actual house.
01:41
no, will you count me down for my recap? Yeah, three, two, one. We wrap up the Johzenji match with a more focused play style from our yellow team. But even that is not enough to take down karasuno. After a challenge for mayone, Hinata is fired up for the next match against Wakutani south. But can our crows overcome the tenacious Takeru and his family of cheering maniacs and, more importantly, will Daichi recover from his deadly run-in with tanaka's shoulder?
02:09
oh, we're gonna get into it we're finally getting into dead chi all those jokes will make sense, hold tight everyone.
em
02:17
So yes, as you said, Johzenji, we're at the top of the episode. We're in the second set with Johzenji and they're definitely fired up now. They're watching karasuno and they're definitely fired up now. They're watching Karasuno and they're playing seriously.
rainbow
02:28
And I love. At some point very early on in the episode, Kageyama is about to block and in the dub at least, he says this time I'll block with something other than my face.
em
02:38
Yeah, it's the same kind of thing in the sub. I love that and.
rainbow
02:41
I love Misaki, the manager, looking so proud of her boys Like they would be absolutely lost without her.
em
02:48
She definitely got through to them with that line. Playing doesn't mean not thinking. We've had that lesson since last episode and we're going to keep getting it where.
rainbow
02:57
When you are really good and really strong, that's when you can play the most, because you have control over your body and control over where the ball is well, and that's something anabara talks about, because we have anabara and Misaki on the sidelines talking and he says in the dub it says, quote being able to make the moves you want to make and having the skills to execute them is when you can truly play freely yes um, and I kind of wanted to talk again about Anabara's coaching style.
03:24
Do we think he's trying to get Jozenji to a place where they have the skills to execute the moves they want to make?
em
03:31
I'm sure that would be any coach's you know desire, and these words really echo what Grandpa Ukai said in the beginning of the season. You know it's a similar idea.
rainbow
03:41
Yeah Well, and I kind of wonder do you think the Jo Zinji boys thought they were playing freely before because they were having fun?
em
03:50
Yeah, I think if you would ask them they'd be like, yeah, we do it and in a way they do look very free, especially like we'll see a few shots from Terashima, where, like I do love his scrappy receives, where, like they'll kind of do whatever to get the ball up in the air, but ultimately the most skilled will have the last laugh.
rainbow
04:08
Well, yeah, my very next note is about Terushima having a plan to receive hina to spike, and it really seems like they do have the skills they need to at least execute saves like his foot save is really badass yeah and that's not the first time we've seen them do something like that.
04:25
I think it's just and I wonder if that's part of Anabara's strategy is like, okay, get them used to going for the ball, going for the ball and being able to save it, and then work on the skills that they need. So, like their defense and their like ability to adapt is good to go, but now they do still need those, like they still need more skills, I would say.
em
04:45
Yeah, for sure, and we'll see that. You know we still have a long way to go, but, as you said, kagehina, go for their quick. And Jozenji is not marking Hinata this time. They're waiting to receive it and they do. And Terashima says something that I like, which is having the simulation and reality come together is so cool, like bringing your ideas to life, whether it's with sports or like you're a writer or whatever. That is a really cool feeling.
rainbow
05:08
Yeah, it's amazing when that is successful, when what you imagine in your head you're able to make it happen in real life. That does feel amazing. And so is this when we get Hinata going over to Kagama and pulling him down to whisper in his ear about their new plan.
em
05:22
Yes, because Hinata has discovered that he hates being ignored by blockers even more than he hates being blocked. So he is determined to try again. And, yeah, it is really cute how he just like marches over to Kageyama and pulls him down and Kageyama lets it happen. That's what's the cutest part is, and that's where I feel like their friendship has really developed. They try it again and they get it through, because Hinata has really developed. They try it again and they get it through because Hinata, this time he's ready for their move and he spots a good place to put the ball. You know, Hinata is able to see in midair. And then he gets it through and we get another evil, proud smile from Kageyama, which I love to always take note of.
rainbow
05:57
And I would like to talk about the fact that we don't get any pushback from Kageyama, like Hinata is the one who comes up with this plan and he tells Kageyama this is what I want to do, and Kageyama listens to him and they do it.
em
06:08
There's a lot of subtle growth, I think, going on in the background between our boys.
rainbow
06:12
I love it and I you know we mentioned Daichi in the recap, but this episode is really showing over and over again what an asset Daichi is to this team, and we see it even starting here, where Daichi suggests that Hinata try a dink. He's like hey, you know, you've got new skills.
em
06:30
Yes, because KageHina they go for it again and Tureshima is able to receive it very up close, another kind of scrappy receive. And yeah, Daichi's like don't forget that one move, you've got a dinkaroo. My favorite part of this scene is Hinata does he uses the dinkaroo? My favorite part of this scene is Hinata does he uses the dink successfully and he turns around and Daichi gives him a real thumbs up I love that moment so much.
rainbow
06:50
It's so cute.
em
06:50
They're so father-son coded well, and it made me think and I actually tweeted I mean, bleeped this, that's what I'm gonna call blue sky what are you calling it?
rainbow
06:59
bleeped, bleeped.
em
07:00
Oh, I like that I um, I, I, bleeped today. That it makes me think of like them in their second year, like their first official game, and Hinata keeps catching himself like looking to Daichi and Suga, but they're not there oh, my god, stop it, I'm gonna cry, I love that. But then he looks in there in the stands cheering him on.
rainbow
07:20
Senpai is always with me in spirit I need you to write a fic, or at least a thread. I did ble, bleep that, so don't you worry. Oh, my god, that's right. We started this off talking about your bleep, my bleep. yeah, and then we have. We see that Aone is so excited to play against Hinata, because I think this is where the game ends right. Like they, they win, karasuno wins, Johzenji has been beaten, and then date tech, the rest of date tech gets up to go and leave and Aone, kind of like, just points his finger and like sends them off, and Futakuchi is just like, okay, all right. Well, you know, don't take too long, we'll see you when you meet up with us. and I just said, Aonefuda are poly kings.
em
08:05
Yeah, no, the silent pointing for them to just leave is so good, yes, but I did just want to say before that the way the game ends is Johzenji tries another synchro attack, which just shows like how dedicated they are to still kind of their play style of trying things out on the fly. Doesn't really work because it costs them the game. But hey, we all had fun and learned a little something, and yeah, and then we have Aone saying you know, off, you go, peasants. I have to wait and talk to my Hinata.
rainbow
08:33
Yes, well, and as Jozenji is leaving the court, we see Miyasaki. She really gets like a moment. She's like all right, guys, like you did great. I like this new, more serious play style of yours. She's hefting that water bottle bag over her shoulder, she's going to leave and then all the boys bow to her, and I do think they could have bowed lower.
em
08:54
They could have. No, I do like that because we actually don't even get the bow in the manga Spoiler alert for manga versus anime. And I do like that she gets this moment because I feel like it kind of makes up for her momming them in the previous episodes, like at least they do have respect for her. I also wanted to just point out because at the very beginning of her little speech she's telling them not to give the incoming manager a hard time next year and we, the incoming manager, a hard time next year, and we get a glimpse of her, the scared little first year, in the stands and I just have to say what is with the micro bangs in the school? I didn't say anything when it was just Misaki, but is it like part of the uniform? Because the incoming they both have the same kind of bangs and I just thought that was funny um, I didn't even notice that, but you're absolutely right and you know.
rainbow
09:35
Keep that in mind for when we get to the character sheet.
em
09:38
Oh, yeah, so no, I like that. She kind of gets this moment of respect.
rainbow
09:44
It's well deserved well, and just as always, Haikyuu loves to give the side characters their turn in the spotlight. And because it's not just that she gets this bow, but we also see her reflecting on her time as the manager. We see back to when she was a first year getting introduced to the team and you know. And her in her second year, with I love that shot of like her high-fiving the old captain and Terushima in the background, clearly being like I want to be involved.
em
10:11
Yeah, no, Haikyuu's definitely good at making you care about the most random people and their micro bangs. And then we have I laugh so hard at this moment every time where tanaNoya are both like coming at Yachi with the jumping high five and she's like she's gonna receive it. She's like no, she grabs them and she's like that's a little much. And then they have like a regular little high five in the background. It's really sweet. I, I just fucking love Karasuno. They are my favorite team. I don't care.
rainbow
10:41
Okay, we get the most time with them, which is the best because they're amazing, they're just so fun. I love all of their dynamics and I do like I feel like there is kind of like an older brother thing with Tanaka and Noya. Just in general, I feel like they are like the like older brothers of the team in a way that like the third years I guess could be called that, but they don't have like I don't know, they're just so responsible.
em
11:03
Yes, no, they are very much giving like the oldest siblings, yeah.
rainbow
11:07
OK, so maybe they're like they really are the middle children. They're the ones getting you high too early in your life. Oh my God, Absolutely. And then is this where we get.
em
11:15
Aone, yes. Aone finds his baby after the game and promises to stop Hinata tomorrow and Hinata, of course, is like I'm gonna get through you. And then Aone, just like, looks back and gives him like a little smile. I love this. Such a pure, just like rivals that respect each other.
rainbow
11:32
Yes, my note is the fires of rivalry burn between Aone and Hinata.
em
11:39
And then my favorite is when Aone walks away and Hinata just starts screaming yes and Kageyama's like shut up, and I'm sure he is so jealous that Hinata got a little rivalry moment. That wasn't with him, that wasn't with him, and like I just feel like that is the ultimate. And even Yamaguchi he says, was Aone waiting just to say that. And then in the manga he says is Hinata that famous already?
rainbow
12:01
And he fucking is yeah, yeah, he is just collecting rivals left and right. Everyone wants to beat Hinata, but Hinata wants to beat Kageyama.
em
12:11
Then we get a peek at our next opponent, the Pinky Boys. Wakutani Wakunan, they call them both things.
rainbow
12:18
Yeah, so it's I. So the full name of the school is Wakatani South, and I think Waku Nan is like short for that. I think it's like Waku South.
em
12:26
Ah, I see. And we meet the captain, who is Takeru and his boisterous family cheering them on. And we have every Kageyama lover's least favorite moment, which is Hinata, and Kageyama see this cheering on and Hinata's like, oh wow, is this family here to cheer him on? And Kageyama makes a face Like we are not just reading into it. He looks down, he looks sad and we'll have to touch on it in the spoiler zone, but know that I want to commit every time I see it.
rainbow
12:51
I feel like I always forget that this moment happens because it's so subtle, but I feel like I see it every time and I'm just like mind blown by the fact that it's even there, like, oh, there's just furudate, I'm coming for you and it's so interesting too, because it's pretty like we don't see a ton of family members, us, an older sibling here or there, but we really don't and we don't really talk about why.
em
13:16
you know, I think we can maybe just assume he doesn't feel like drawing all those characters, but they make a point of Takeru has his family there to support him.
rainbow
13:23
Well, and I kind of I tried to do a little bit of research.
13:27
I did like very surface level, brief research into seeing if it's unusual for families to cheer on their kids at high school sports, and I couldn't find anything definitive.
13:38
It was talking about how Japanese high schools don't usually have stadiums where, like all the students can come and watch, but they do tend to have games and tournaments on the weekend so, like other students can come, but it and it kind of seemed to imply that usually it's often families who are watching rather than other students. That's what I would think. But I think in the Haikyuu world specifically, we just don't see a lot of parents. Parents just aren't really part of the equation here, and so I think that's more just a like us not seeing a lot of families as more a function of that rather than like actually representing how it is in Japan. Right, yeah, and I think having like one kid whose whole family shows up, it's like it is kind of a cool contrast or an interesting contrast to be like, wow, there's like eight people cheering on this one kid and we like hardly ever see anyone anyone else's parents, but we do see siblings.
em
14:29
We do. We have the commercial break there and then we enter the second part of the episode. You said Wakutani South is no joke. I said Wakutani is nothing to play with. Wow, we have Ukai talking about them, warning that their play style is like Nekoma's and not to get frustrated when they can't get an attack in. And he specifically calls out the Idiot Four, which is TanaNoya and Kagehina. And what's really funny is Kageyama clearly does not think that he is part of that group really funny is Kageyama clearly does not think that he is part of that group.
15:00
It just because you're not necessarily as boisterous as tanaka and Hinata doesn't mean you're not an idiot meathead also to add even more, in the manga, during the scene, Kageyama has like a thought bubble and he's thinking about pork curry I love him so much.
rainbow
15:15
He's so dumb, yeah, and then also, then Daichi swoops in to be a better coach than Ukai ever could. Oh my god.
em
15:22
Daichi is like on fire this whole game. They'll say it in a little bit, but it is captain versus captain, because Daichi is just on top of it well because he says well because Ukai says that thing about the idiot four.
rainbow
15:36
And then Daichiichi says but don't worry, we'll be here to have your backs. Yes, and Ukai keeps saying oh my god, this kid is making me look bad and it's like well, Ukai, he had to be the coach for two years before you showed up. And honestly, he's a little bit better in some regards. That's the thing I feel like Ukai's so good at teaching the skills, but when it comes to like pumping everyone up, it's really on Daichi.
16:01
Ukai's not a socially skilled man, I would say I would agree, yeah, and then we go to the game, right?
em
16:06
Yes, it's the next day. It's time to play even more of Takeru's family as they're to cheer him on. Tsukki asks Hinata why he looks jealous, which I thought was interesting too. Another thing that we don't really like. Is Hinata just jealous because Takaru's being hyped up so much, or is it because he has his family there?
rainbow
16:21
we don't really like get into that no, I mean, I think, I think we're supposed to assume it's because Hinata wants, he wants attention like he's an attention whore.
16:30
Yes, that's what I was going to say earlier, when he was talking about being ignored as even worse than being blocked. He's like he wants everyone to be all over him all the time for real. but this is another example because I think we've had this before and we'll definitely see it a lot more later where another team's cheering section has an effect on the team that they're playing like. I think it's so interesting the way that it's not just what's going on on the court, it's not just what's going on on the court, it's not just what's happening on the court.
em
16:58
But like in the whole room.
rainbow
17:00
Yeah, it's everything in the stadium, and then I mean, as we see through flashbacks, it's also, you know, everybody's life up until the point in that game. That affects what happens Seriously.
em
17:10
Shimada joins us today as Takanoe has to mind the store, and so does everyone's favorite older sister, psycho nason.
rainbow
17:17
She cheers on tanaka and embarrasses him, and then we have Yachi ogling her boobies I love and the way she's like holding her hands in front of her chest, like imagining what it's like to have boobs that big in the manga there's like a little it just says in shock oh my god, this. I love this fucking lesbian. We also have the captain handshake between Daichi and Takeru.
em
17:40
Yes, and this is interesting in the you know they have a handshake and then Daichi goes to pull away and Takeru holds on and is like we won't be letting our guard down. They added that that wasn't in the manga.
rainbow
17:52
Well, and I really like it, because Daichi is like kind of shocked for a second and he says like thanks, and I love that, Wakutani, like they have seen enough of Kurosano to know that they are not the fallen crows anymore. I think Shimada even says something about that and he's like we're not going to underestimate you, like these other teams, like we're coming for you yeah, no, Karasuno is definitely getting recognized for who they are.
em
18:12
We have Daichi, who knows just how to fire up Hinata. He tells them that, oh, you know, they probably this strong team, probably researched you. And of course, once again, attention, whore.
rainbow
18:24
Hinata is like oh, Well, I love, yeah, because I mean I think we get a little into the game and they're not having any trouble with Hinata, they're able to deal with his quicks. And then not only does Daichi rile up Hinata, but then he riles up Tanaka because he's like oh well, I guess Hinata is the only one they think they have to worry about. And you see Tanaka's ear getting big and he's like not on your life. We keep going back to these unidentified players and these just like gray sweatsuits that are clearly like rooting for Karasuno.
18:55
It's so funny because it's like you won't like animate and voice. Act like actual characters from the show sometimes, but you will give us just these random motherfuckers.
em
19:03
But dude, one and two are gonna have a whole conversation.
rainbow
19:07
Absolutely. But I do think I you know I joke about that but I do think it's important for us to see, especially in a game like this, it's important for us to see that Karasuno is being discussed, they're being talked about, they're being recognized.
em
19:19
Let's give them something to talk about so, and I remember being like so teed off the first time I watched this, because Ukai goes on to observe that Takeru's playing style is probably the most similar to the little giants, and like they kind of start giving Takeru his flowers and I'm just like, but Hinata's the little giant I feel that I I think I also got annoyed the first time I watched that, so I was like who the fuck is this dude, who the fuck is this guy?
19:49
and they talk about how he uses Takeru uses angles to get through the blocks and we even have suki reacting and he looks shook that he would be a hard person to go up against. Takeru then tries to rile up Hinata by kind of saying to his other playmate like, oh, don't worry, we'll get it through. And Daichi, of course, is there to clock that and is like, hey, he's just trying to rile you up. And that's when Ukai says you know, if the last game was play style against play style, this is like captain against captain.
rainbow
20:14
Yeah, well, because we get like a glare between the captains, like Takeru's pissed that Daichi called him out for and it's like don't be so obvious honey.
em
20:25
I know I love this happens and this is such a Haikyuu thing where, like when two characters have that moment, there's that lightning strike thing.
rainbow
20:28
Yes, I love it Like their eyes meeting and you can feel the buzz of tension in the air.
em
20:33
Daichi is on top of it today. He reminds Kageyama not to forget about their kingly ace because they're getting so wrapped up in the midair battles. And then he has to remind hey, I've got a big, strong man on our left. And then he also because he sees that there is one blocker dedicated to Hinata and they have two for the others, but that won't be enough to stop their ace. You need to bring an iron wall. And I feel like this is just like a nice, rare moment where we see Daichi's pride in Asahi, because he's always giving that tough love to Asahi, but he very much believes in his wing spiker.
rainbow
21:08
Well, and I just I love this moment of Daichi kind of reminding Kageyama that like, hey, we have other spikers on this team other than your boyfriend.
em
21:14
Yeah sometimes Kageyama needs to be reminded that there's not just Hinata on the court Also. Then Asahi gets it through. Daichi and Asahi fist bump a little too hard. They're both such alphas, they're such butches.
rainbow
21:26
I love both of them just like shaking their hands out in pain after fist bumping too hard, that's so funny.
em
21:32
But now he's not the only captain who knows how to rile up his teammates, because then we have Takeru with Pineapplehead, who is the vice captain. He's the number two and he points out oh, there's a cute girl in the crowd and that gets Pineapplehead all fired up. But just to show that this is certainly captain versus captain.
rainbow
21:49
Yeah, and then we is this where we have Takeru. Like thinking about how he's like well, you know, I've got this like wild and crazy family, so like being the second son with them totally has prepared me to be the captain of this volleyball team. And my note is like so fascinating how Takaru, having to be the most responsible person in his family, helps him to be a better volleyball captain. I'm sure that won't cause any problems for him later in life. Yeah, I'm sure he won't have attachment issues. Yeah, speaking as the most responsible person in my family since I was young definitely doesn't affect you in adulthood whatsoever.
em
22:20
You know, it's an interesting angle and it makes sense that this whole family thing is a thing in the first place, because he uses a Jurassic Park metaphor, that that's what he lives in, and so this is just the court, is just a zoo, which is interesting and also gives more theory to Daichi being an eldest sibling.
rainbow
22:42
Yeah, well, I think it's interesting that he's the second son, Like he's not the eldest one, he is this he's the second oldest.
em
22:44
Yeah, I mean, my sister is the second oldest and she's definitely more responsible than me.
rainbow
22:48
And you know what I'm, the. You know I'm. We only have. There's only two kids in my immediate family, but I'm the second one and I'm more responsible. So now's the time. Here it is. Do you want to break it down for us? Well, this episode anime.
em
23:02
We should all know if an episode is concentrating a lot on a character, that means they're about to die, and well, Daichi. So Daichi and tanaka smack into each other hard on the court and the episode ends with Daichi like slumped on the floor and tanaka and Suga's face so worried about his boyfriend, he is like, he looks like all the blood has drained from his face and I mean. And then it ends and it's really giving, and I said this to you before we recorded. It's like and that's how Regina George died Like it really does Like. This is why dead Daichi meme is so perfect.
rainbow
23:48
Yes, Okay, so story time. My friend who first introduced me to Haikyuu, I was texting with her about watching it. I first introduced me to Haikyuu, I was, texting with her about watching it. I was on season two. She was like, oh, did you get to where Daichi dies? And I was like, what are you talking about? She was like when Daichi dies, I was like Daichi doesn't die, this is a sports animation. She was like no, Daichi dies, like you'll see. And then I got to this episode and like it ended and I immediately texted her was like Daichi is dead. I can't believe you were right oh, oh my god yeah, my last note is shock, panic, suspense.
24:20
Daichi is dead.
em
24:23
I mean, that's a bold move for a volleyball anime.
rainbow
24:26
I love it. Yeah, they really gave him like the dying edit. Like you know how on Drag Race they give people like the last episode edit.
em
24:33
Yes, exactly it's like. This is the closest we can get to a death edit in this volleyball anime, this slice of life, and it honestly is so suspenseful it really does make like I need to watch the next episode.
rainbow
24:44
I need to know if Daichi is okay. Yeah, is he okay, he's dead he's dead.
em
24:49
Tanaka killed him. Oh, my god, yeah, the survivor's guilt speaking of, there's a great tiktok.
rainbow
24:55
I cannot remember who made it, but it's the, it's the um, the Jesus one. It's like one of you is going to kill me and it's like is it me Jesus? Exactly, yeah, and it's so great. It's like Daichi saying that and then it's just like it's like Hinata and he's like no, it's not you, no, it's not you, Is it me? Is it me, Jesus? God, I love that. Tiktok's an amazing place.
em
25:18
Oh, my God, all right, so that is next. Thank you, thank you. Next, now for manga versus anime. I did touch on a couple of things. Let's see if I have any. Oh, there is a really cute panel of the night before the pinky game where we see Tanaka sleeping and Saeko walking by his room brushing her teeth, Daichi looking out the window. But then my favorite is Natsu is sleeping on a mat on Hinata's floor, and I wonder if, like she just likes to sleep in his room sometimes.
rainbow
25:53
Really, that's so adorable I need more Haikyuu siblings.
em
25:54
I need more interactions between Haikyuu siblings, I know. And also, Hinata has a volleyball at the foot of his bed and it, with his positioning, it looks like he fell asleep, tossing the ball in the air I bet he did.
rainbow
26:01
You know he? He and Kageyama both sleep with a volleyball in their bed at all times yes, and then when? They get older and they're together. They sleep with a volleyball between them, cuddling like us and our cat.
em
26:11
Oh, okay, and that's actually all I have for manga versus anime. I mentioned the rest of them throughout the episode. Yeah, you talked about a lot, but I love, I love all of it. That's it for manga versus anime. Now it's rainbow with the weather, I mean character spotlight.
rainbow
26:24
Well, you know it's going to be a lovely sunny day with Misaki Hana. I like that, thank you. So I have a note about her personality which I mean it's a few lines, but it really is just like everything we learn about her in these two episodes. So quote somewhat quiet and timid Misaki initially often lets herself be spoken over and doesn't chime into conversations. Often, however, during the match against Karasuno, she finds her voice and surprises her team as well as Karasuno, with a bold speech Instead of her usual quiet self. She's very blunt about the boys abilities and what they need to do or change in order to win, showcasing why she was given the position of manager in the first place. Oh yeah, so that's really. That's everything that happens with Misaki.
27:05
Her name, meaning her family name, is Misaki, which means three blossoms, which is so fascinating because it really is like the kanji for three sun, and then like another kanji, which I assume is blossoms, and I just I'm still so confused about how kanji works. But yeah, so Misaki, three blossoms. And then her first name, which I think we just pronounce Hannah, but I'm not sure if it's Hana in Japanese. Should have asked, should have looked it up, but Hannah or Hana, which means splendor or flower, and I do know that hannah is flower yes, so basically she's a pretty flower she's a pretty flower with really short bangs.
27:45
okay, moving on to her character sheet, she is the volleyball team manager at jozenji high school. She is in third year, class six. Her height is 163.2 centimeters and I forgot to convert it, so figure it out. That's about as tall as Hinata, I guess. Okay, sure, her birthday is May 30th, so she is a A May Gemini. Ooh Gemini, oh, me used to love a Gemini. We're doing a lot of singing this episode. We're full of joy, I'm not mad about it. We're doing a lot of singing this episode. We're full of joy, I'm not mad about it. Her favorite food is baby castella.
em
28:19
I looked it up. It's a type of Japanese sponge cake.
rainbow
28:22
Oh yum, oh my god.
em
28:24
It does look simple and yummy.
rainbow
28:26
I want to eat so many little cakes in Japan One day. And then her current concern is she's been asked shouldn't you let your bangs grow already? That was Em em. Em was the one who asked that that.
em
28:37
Yes, thank you that was the joke I was gonna make sorry, I stole your joke no, but literally, and it makes me feel better because I was writing that down about the bangs and I was like, am I just being a fucking asshole? But no, they are short. It's certainly a hairstyle, like I know, but the way it looks on her specifically, I'm not sure about it.
rainbow
28:57
Em has bangs right now and I'm living yeah, the bangs are definitely back in trend.
em
29:04
Oh, I'm not mad about it and I hate to be different, so I had to. No, um, all right, so that is our baby Misaki. Thank you for sticking around with your little bangs.
rainbow
29:13
Yeah, she did not have any ability parameters sticking around with your little bangs.
em
29:18
Yeah, she did not have any ability parameters. which is lame all right. Now it's time for the world's favorite game of two in Haikyuu. This week's scenario is brought to us by corvidia. What role would our characters have on a road trip? Example, snacks? Who was in charge of music? The driver, the navigator, etc. Today we're going to be covering Hinata, Kageyama Yachi and Ennoshita. Tan Tanaka, Noya Terushima, Misaki Daichi and Takeru. Hinata can't be in charge of anything. I feel like Hinata and Kageyama cannot be in charge of anything.
rainbow
29:45
Yeah, I think okay. So let's think about like a whole team of Karasuno going on a road trip together. Hinata and Kageyama are told to sit in like away from each other.
em
29:57
Yeah, they definitely have to be separated at some point.
rainbow
29:58
Yeah, they're not allowed to sit side by side. I think a road trip just with Hinata and Kageyama.
em
30:03
They're getting very, very lost oh my god, yeah, no, yeah, they would get horribly lost well, I maybe, maybe Hinata could be put in charge of music.
rainbow
30:14
Maybe he definitely couldn't be put in charge of snacks because he'd eat them all. I also see Hinata like they get separated in the car, but then Hinata is like turning around to continue arguing with kage yeah, yeah, they think it's going to be a good idea to separate them, but it actually just means more people are within range of them, trying to hit each other and yelling.
em
30:32
I think Hinata's trying to get people to play like road trip games because he's so bored.
rainbow
30:36
Oh my, yeah, okay, yeah, he is definitely like. Daichi is definitely putting like bringing the portable DVD player and setting him up with like a movie to watch.
em
30:44
Oh my god, and like a little baggie of snacks, because he's five Kageyama.
rainbow
30:48
actually he's also just passed out the entire time we actually know for a fact that Kageyama is just sleeping on road trips every moment of every day, Yachi looked at the route the night before.
em
30:59
She printed out the route, as well as having the GPS, just in case their phone died, she did like a driving simulator game of the route.
rainbow
31:07
So she knows what to be prepared for. She's making sure the tires are good to go.
em
31:11
She's definitely an anxious road tripper.
rainbow
31:14
Yeah, she's very prepared. The cooler is packed. The playlists have been made. Do we think she's driving or do we think she's way too scared?
em
31:24
to drive. I feel like she's in the passenger seat navigating, I think.
rainbow
31:28
Yachi would be an amazing navigator. Well, would she or would she like get freaked out? She'd be like a turn is coming up in five miles. Yeah, I think it depends on who's driving. She or would she like get freaked out? I could be like a turn is coming up in five miles. Yeah, I well, I think I think it depends on who's driving.
31:39
I think if it's Kiyoko, she's way too nervous about messing up oh, my god, I think, if it's like, if it's, if we're talking like karasuno first years, like the karasuno five, um, she is definitely the navigator.
em
31:51
Yes, Yamaguchi is driving yeah, Yamaguchi is driving.
rainbow
31:55
Yachi is navigating, Yamaguchi is driving. Yachi is navigating. Tsukishima is in charge of music. Hinata and Kageyama are. Kageyama is asleep, Hinata is being obnoxious.
em
32:03
Yes, Ennoshita, I think, is another one that's driving Agreed. I think, he's got a spray bottle to spray either TanaNoya or Kageyama if they're acting up in the back.
rainbow
32:14
Absolutely, I think, Ennoshita driving, or if Daichi is driving, Ennoshita navigating.
em
32:19
Yeah, they're definitely running the show together if they're both there. Tanaka and INoya are flipping people off as they pass by. They're mooning people, they're trying, they're fighting over the ox cord.
rainbow
32:32
Absolutely. They are turning all of Hinata's fun, innocent games into weird, creepy, sexy ones.
em
32:38
They're like prodding along their arguments for entertainment's sake yes, absolutely, yes, absolutely.
rainbow
32:44
do we think either of them would try to drive? Would they want to drive and be told they can't? Probably, um, they're also the ones who like ever and I think Hinata is one of these two similar to louise from Bob's Burgers, where they're the ones seeing the roadside attractions and being like we have to go see the giant ball of yarn, we have to go see the House of Mysteries.
em
33:05
Yeah, they're making them stop every fucking like half an hour because they either want to stop somewhere or they have to pee or they're hungry.
rainbow
33:11
No, they're definitely peeing into bottles. Let's be real Poop peeing into bottles.
em
33:20
Let's be real poop. Turishima is definitely the kind of driver where he's speeding and weaving in and out of traffic.
rainbow
33:23
Yeah, he's the kind of driver I hate to be on the road with, because he is like he's passing in the right lane and he's it's like a five lane highway and he's all the way in the right. He's passing all the way to the left fast lane. He's definitely driving in the carpool lane when it's only him. Misaki she's driving, she's passing out snacks and she's driving and she, honestly, she's doing it all. Yeah, she's doing every. Anabara is driving and she's making sure the boys don't kill everybody yeah, she's putting on paw patrol or something on the screens.
em
33:54
Yeah, really Takeru Takeru is giving driver well, you know he's that second, that responsible second son yeah, we have a lot of responsible people on this list we do. Well, you gotta have your drivers and then everybody else.
rainbow
34:08
Yes, absolutely, um, yeah, all right, so, um, thank you. How do you say that name?
em
34:12
core video that's just how I'm reading it. I apologize if that is not correct, but I I feel good about it yeah, they're, they're a tumblr user, so thank you very.
rainbow
34:21
I've only ever read the name. I haven't heard it said out loud. But, corvidia, thank you so much for this one. This was a joy and, as always, listeners. We would love to hear what you think of this week's who and Haikyuu, and what role do you think other characters would have in a road trip and you can always add in characters we haven't talked about in this episode.
em
34:40
All right, moving on to oh. Before we go to the spoiler zone, please hit me up on social media. I'm on Twitter, instagram, Tumblr and Blue Sky at flyhaikyupod. That's F-L-Y-H-Q-P-O-D. You can also email us at flyhighqpod at gmailcom F-L-Y-H-Q-P-O-D at gmailcom. And now it's time for the spoiler zone. If Kageyama's parents have no haters, I'm dead, and I've said this before, and I've seen people stand up for Kageyama's parents and say why should they have to go to their only son's volleyball game of a game that he's super passionate about?
rainbow
35:20
I don't know why would they? I don't know, piss me off. It could be because when his grandfather was alive, I know for a fact he was going to every single one of his games before he got sick, and now that his grandfather's dead he has nobody there to support him, and I don't know. Maybe his parents could step up and actually support their son. But that's just me, that's just me guys yeah, no it is, it's I.
em
35:39
I need an explanation. I want to know why my son is being ignored by his actual parents yeah, it's just like that sad look that Kageyama has on his face yeah when they talk about his family, cheering him on is just so fucking heartbreaking.
rainbow
35:56
And you just know he's thinking about Kazuya, you know he's thinking about his grandpa. So yeah, I think I've talked about this before. But I think when I was writing my notes about Misaki and her moment that she gets and her like reflecting and getting to really see her background and see her journey through volleyball, you know, as a manager, it always makes me think of the fact that we do not get Kageyama's true background, like from when he was a little kid until the very end of the series. And I think it's kind of easy to like think well, no, we get like his background from middle school and like why he's so, why he is the way he is at the beginning and the whole king thing. We get that background but we don't get like his full, like tragic backstory, until the very, very end.
36:36
And it's like if I could just sit down with Furudate and ask questions, I'd be like I just want to know so much about like what, what, what made you want to do that? Why did you want to hold off till the end? Because it seems very clear to me that that was planned from the beginning. I don't think that was added later on. I think we knew he knew from the beginning that Kageyama, you know, had this grandfather who taught him this sport and he lost him and that, like, really had a deep effect on him. And I just wonder what that is. I think it's for the impact of the someone better.
em
37:05
Yes, that's what I was going to say. I feel like it's so. I think it also speaks to Kageyama's main character, energy, because I know he is technically the deuteragonist, but I could I'd almost say that Hinata and Kageyama are both the main characters. I agree.
rainbow
37:20
I really I think of them both as the main character. I think they share the role. It really is about the two of them and just the fact that they often share rivals, like I mean, one of the biggest quote unquote villains or antagonists of the first two seasons is Kageyama's antagonist right.
em
37:35
I mean this story is just about just as much about. It's about Hinata's growth, but it's also about Kageyama's growth and it just feels like I mean I wish I could have experienced that in real time, like getting those answers that like really perfectly fill in the spaces of why Kageyama was like that, and then that hit of the someone better and how like it just fucking really hits how much Hinata and Kageyama were meant to be together. And I don't know I I needed to, I need to write out an essay about it, but I think it's the best way. Like I think if he had told us any earlier, it wouldn't have hit the same no, I think it's, it's a genius idea.
rainbow
38:12
I'm not mad about it, like, yes, it's like it is, and that's the thing is. I think what's so genius about it is you don't even realize, you're waiting for it until you get it, and then you're like this is what was missing, yes, from Kageyama's story, and you didn't even know that it was missing. And then you're it just like, completes his picture so much more. And, yeah, it does make the someone better, so impactful, to get all of the information right at once. And you know, talking about Kageyama as the main character, I think we have to talk about the manga prototype, where he is the main character, yes, and the focus is on him, and so I think, when I also just to say I think Kageyama is the most based on furudate himself I think so too definitely, and one day we will have to do a bonus episode where we read that manga.
38:51
We will prototype and talk about it, because it is even more gay in some ways yeah, yeah, oh, absolutely.
em
38:57
But no, I think, knowing that and then looking back at the story from the beginning, it just colors everything. The way he treats Hinata especially that's what, that's what's so frustrating about people who must be anime onlys and don't understand Kageyama's character. It's like girl, just wait. Because it just it makes everything make sense to me, the way he treats Hinata and the way he looks at volleyball and like it. If we don't get, don't even I can't even fucking think about it we don't get that jack adler's game animated and we don't get all of this backstory.
rainbow
39:31
If we don't get it, I'll throw hands with the entire nation of Japan.
em
39:39
Japan. I'm closing in on your location.
rainbow
39:42
We're in California. We're not that far, we just have to cross an ocean, anyway on that note, yeah, now that I've threatened an entire nation.
em
39:49
Thank you once again for sticking around, and we will see you next time. Until then, then, fly high.
