popular. Hello everyone and welcome to Fly A Queer a Haikyuu podcast. I'm Rainbow, they she
em
00:14
and I'm Em, and today we're talking about season 2, episode 18, the Losers. But first episode 18, the Losers, but first we gotta talk about Wicked.
rainbow
00:31
I really think I was talking about Wicked. I really think Wicked is maybe one of the best movies I've ever seen in my entire life.
em
00:36
I think a lot of people went in with low expectations because, a, people didn't trust Ariana Grande and, b, people don't trust remakes anymore because they are notoriously bad. I went in with like pretty mid expectations. I knew I'm a fan of Ari and I had faith in her that she was going to kill it, but I really didn't have any other ideas. Neither of us are super familiar with the musical. It knocked us on our fucking ass.
rainbow
01:02
Yeah, I went in because I went into Barbie with such high expectations and so excited and was ultimately disappointed by a lot of choices that were made, and so I went in like you know what, because I love you. Know I really know the songs because of Glee, and like I know that I like some of the songs.
01:16
I know it's an amazing musical. I've read the book so I like the property. I love the Wizard of Oz. We watched it the day before Like I love that world. So I was like you know what, I think this is going to be a good time. And then I was crying so much. I was fucking exhilarated by watching this movie.
em
01:32
It's very, very well done. It is cinema.
rainbow
01:35
This is the way movies are supposed to be made, and if you haven't seen it, we're not going to give you any spoilers, although if you know the musical, you know what happens. Anyway, this is only part one.
em
01:49
Part two is already made.
rainbow
01:50
It's coming out next year and I can't believe I have to wait a year. That honestly feels homophobic, but it's fine. but it's just practical sets, practical effects, practical makeup, like real dancers and like they did use CGI. because you kind of have to with a movie like this, but they used CGI. I think the way that we should be using it, which is for things that you literally can't do with a human being and anything they could conceivably do with actual humans and with actual, real things, they did it and it was just gorgeous and I think just everyone involved with the movie really seemed to be committed to making art and that is what they gave us and I fucking loved it. Ariana Grande was was amazing. Cynthia Erivo amazing. Jeff Goldblum amazing Just the casting was right.
em
02:30
Everyone, everyone did their part on this group project. So but we are going to get into it a little bit more later in the podcast. But really, if you haven't watched it and you like anything to do with musicals or being gay or witches or just good movies, go fucking watch it. It's so good.
rainbow
02:48
I just I have to stop now, because otherwise I will spend this entire recording talking about my feelings about Wicked and we're not here to do that. We're here to talk about.
em
02:57
Haikyuu. Hell yeah, and we have a little bit of housekeeping to do.
rainbow
03:02
We were re-watching early season one. We watched episode one and two with some of our friends, so we noticed that in episode two, when Hinata and Kageyama are fighting in front of the vice principal, Oikawa's little theme shows up. We get his little. What is it? You know that little?
em
03:22
jazzy number.
rainbow
03:23
Which I you know. I think after Oikawa shows up, it kind of becomes exclusively him.
em
03:27
But I think it is funny, though, that when they're like causing trouble is when the theme pops up and and.
rainbow
03:32
What is Oikawa, if not trouble a little?
em
03:34
bit of trouble.
rainbow
03:36
Yeah, so that was just a fun thing. We noticed that and I immediately, like, went to our notes and was, like, we have to talk about this on the pod. So let us know. If anyone else has noticed that, or if you've noticed any other character themes that play during other moments, please feel free to point those out to us.
em
03:50
Hell yeah, Sorry guys, if you could hear the dishwasher in the background. I think it ended now, so you won't hear it anymore.
rainbow
03:58
Yeah, I really feel like those are the moments when you can tell this is a homemade operation.
em
04:02
We are homemade moments when you can tell this is a homemade operation. We are homemade. We're in a tiny apartment, aren't we endearing? Give us money, just kidding. Anyway, it's time for Rainbow's recap Coming at us. Live in three two one.
rainbow
04:13
Wakatani South is giving Karasuno a run for their money. Hinata is frustrated that he can't take on the tiny giant-like player all on his own, but his senpai, Inoshida, is able to get over his own frustrations to help Karasuno win the game With a well-rested Daichi back in action. The team is ready to find out who they'll be playing next. Will Date Tech overcome Aba Josai, or will our crows be facing off with Seijo once more? And so we're getting into the episode. And what do we start out with?
em
04:37
Well, we have Oikawa being himself. They're about to face off with date tech and, of course, he's being a sassy little bitch to our Futakuchi, who's having none of it and I love this because I always forget that we get this little moment between them.
rainbow
04:49
But like talk about two of the best sassy bitchy characters to face off and Futakuchi is scary. He didn't sound quite as angry in the dub, I noticed, but in the sub he's like, yeah, he's pissed, but I, Oikawa is unflappable, like and I think that's like Oikawa is just so fucking confident. He's like he just feels like he is like ready to go. He's like, no, no, no, we're gonna win.
em
05:14
And Furukuchi says to him it doesn't matter, you know the year rank, whatever, the strong are the strong. And then, of course, Oikawa to himself is like yes, and then of course, Oikawa to himself is like yes, that's right, it doesn't matter, the strong are the strong and the losers are the one who drops the ball. Cut to Karasuno, who is struggling without Daddy Daichi.
rainbow
05:32
And specifically Inoshita. And in the dub, what Oikawa says is whoever lets the ball fall is the loser, and that's being said while we're watching Inoshita miss a receive which felt harsh.
em
05:46
Yeah, yeah, being said, while we're watching Inoshita miss a receive which felt harsh, yeah, yeah, he can't quite measure up there in the halfway through the second set and they're just struggling without Daichi's solid receives. But I do love how the second years really rally behind Inoshita. They're like you shouldn't look like it's the end of the world. And then Noya joins in shouting about being the earth guardian, did you?
rainbow
06:02
catch that? Oh my, oh my gosh. No, I didn't, but I think it's time to get into a little bit of a rainbow learning corner, because we have, I think it's. Ukai says something about Enoshita isn't used to being on the left or on the right side, and I feel like we never go into like extreme detail on this about like, but it's very clear that, like, being a right side or a left side, hitter matters a lot, and what I didn't find in my research is do they mean left side of the court or to the left of the setter?
em
06:35
I guess it's the same thing um, from what I can understand, they get into it a little more detailed in the manga is like because he's right-handed and he's like used to one side of the court, but because they're playing on the other side he's just like not used to it, it's, it's a hand thing okay.
rainbow
06:50
Well so, and I kind of went a different direction. I kind of looked into volleyball positions and I got some information from us sports camps dot com. It was a guide to parents for volleyball and it said that being on the right is called being the opposite hitter, also known as a right side hitter. It's considered the most versatile because they can excel on offense and defense. They will not only hit the ball from the front and back row, but also dig for quick attacks and set the ball if the setter is unable to do it. During defense. They will also help on blocks with the middle blocker.
07:25
So that's the opposite hitter, and then the outside hitter is also known as the left side hitter, is considered the focal point of the offense and typically performs most of the attack hits. An outside hitter must be able to have good back row skills and a good jumping ability, because they sometimes will hit from the back row, depending on where the set is coming from. Outside hitters will sometimes remain in the game for all rotations. On defense, they will receive the serve and block with the middle hitter. They're also considered one of the primary passers, and so I guess it seems like Ennoshita is taking on the role of opposite hitter, which is what Daichi usually does, and Asahi is an outside hitter, which I guess is kind of where, like the ace tends to be, and I think Tanaka is also an outside hitter.
08:08
So I just thought that was very interesting, and I also have a little something to say in the spoiler zone about all of that.
em
08:13
Okay, well, in the meantime, Hinata is clarifying with Ukai and I love in the sub they always call him Kochi and he asks if Takaru's play style is in, in fact, the most similar to the Giants, since he's only seen the one game. And Kochukai confirms. And of course Hinata kind of looks at him, you know, like a challenge. And Kageyama is quick to humble him with the cold reality of, like you know, just, you have no, you're no match for him in the air right now. Just focus on what you do best. And Hin Hinata goes why do you always have to break my heart like that? Which is like I know, honey, it's hard when your crush doesn't recognize you. And then Kageyama, we get a little insight into his brain and he's like I was giving you a kind, some kind advice he just doesn't understand how he comes off to people whatsoever he is.
09:02
His lack of self-awareness is extreme and then Hinata says something that really sticks with Inoshita, which is, I know they're good. That's why I'm trying to figure out what to do.
rainbow
09:13
Yes, and you know he's trying to figure out what to do, but I think it's very clear that he's kind of letting Takaru get in his head and he's like not, he's not doing so great. But then he does have that killer save where he like jumps to the side of the court and Ukai has to move the bench and it throws takada off. I love that moment.
em
09:31
Yes, yes, because you know Hinata, he tries for a wipe but he's way off. He does a home run and, yeah, he's no match for this little bitch in the air, but he's still scrappy, as you said. He he dives, nearly dives into the bench to save the ball, does this perfect dive, swings around and makes it back in time to nail a quick and we get another. There's a lot of good little Kagehina moments in here, because with that, Hinata does slam into Kageyama and also he is so cute, he's like you guys be careful. And Kageyama's like it's no problem, he's so light anyway. And then they start hitting at each other and then Kageyama says even if we're backed into a corner, we still have the firepower to fight through.
rainbow
10:12
That's our weapon yes, which I think it's so interesting that we kind of see this right after the Johzenji match, because I had a thought to myself that particular volley where Hinata has to do that dive for it, it's almost like a two-on-two with Kagehina, it's almost like it's Kagehina playing in a two-on-two match and it felt very much like something like the kind of move we would see somebody from Jozenji do yeah, and then, of course, Hinata is like wow, Kageyama said something good and of course, while Kageyama didn't come up with that on his own, he's repeating Ennoshita's words back to him and we see this affecting Ennoshita and it kind of made me think this whole part, made me think that, like Hinata is comparing himself to Takeru and Ennoshita keeps comparing himself to Daichi and he's like I can't be what Daichi is for this team, a hype man, tanaka comes in to save the day and tell Ennoshita like don't worry man, like you're good, you've got this.
11:03
And I think it really does give Ennoshita the kick that he needs because he decides to make a game plan for the team.
em
11:09
He's like all right, guys, and I think it's kind of him accepting like okay, I can't be Daichi, but I can fill a role and also I just wanted to point out we get the most emotion out of our NPCs during this episode, because every time Ennoshita is going through something, his little little posse because Ennoshita actually is Regina George, his little posse of NPCs are like oh, Ennoshita, you're going to be okay.
rainbow
11:29
I just thought that was funny.
em
11:30
That's like the most we get out of them, honestly, aside from a few other things.
rainbow
11:34
Okay, but a quick who and how. Q of Ennoshita is Regina George, who is Gretchen Wieners and who is Amanda Seyfried.
em
11:40
I think I have to give Narita Karen, because I just you know we get less out of him. So maybe he's dumb, I don't know.
rainbow
11:48
And I think and I totally see Kenoshita as Gretchen Wieners. Thank you for reminding me what Amanda Seyfried's name is in that movie, because I forgot. Notice, I said the actor name, not her character name.
em
11:59
So then we have our little commercial break. It actually happened a little early on in this episode, I think. Then we come back and Hinata goes for a rebound which his senpai Bokuto taught him over the summer camp.
rainbow
12:12
And Tsukki is like oh, you know, he's kind of talking about how Hinata clearly learned that from Bokuto, but it was probably just a fluke, which I disagree with. I don't think that was a fluke. Hinata's a sponge. He picks up skills everywhere he goes.
em
12:24
We watch him think it through and execute it. So yeah, I think Tsukki's just not going to give Hinata his flowers.
rainbow
12:30
But he's just going to be a bitch.
em
12:31
Yeah, and Suga recognizes, whether on purpose or not, you know, Hinata is trying to also make up for the lack of Daichi. And then it's so funny because in the background you have another like Kagehina argument where Kageyama is mad that Hinata knew about this rebound and didn't share it with him, and they're all telling him how cool it is. And then we have a flash to Boku Aka and Boku no is like. I feel like someone is praising me right now.
rainbow
12:56
Yes, and in the sub, what does Akaashi say?
em
13:00
I think he just says, like you're imagining it or something.
rainbow
13:03
Yeah, I think he just says like you're imagining it or something. Yeah, because in the dub, you know, Bokuto is like yelling. He's like I just got the feeling someone was praising me and Akaashi like looks to the side and he's like, well, it wasn't me.
em
13:14
Which is defensive, which makes me think that Akaashi was thinking about how awesome Bokuto was in that moment and I was like can Bokuto-san read minds? Oh my gosh. Yeah, no, the dub made some pretty funny choices this episode. I will say yes.
rainbow
13:27
Okay and then. So, leaving the small Boko Aka moment, going back to the game, we have Takeru saying something that we hear about Hinata over and over again, which is Takeru thought Hinata was only good because of the setter on.
em
13:41
Karate.
rainbow
13:41
Yeah, because he says he's like I heard that that number 10 was pretty tricky, but I thought it was just because of their setter, and I think that's true in season one. But season two Hinata is learning to stand on his own and he is able to make those choices and he fought for that ability, he fought for the right to do that and I just think I think it's so fascinating and I think this is the first time while rewatching season two where I really understand how much those first few episodes and that fight that they have really affects the rest of the season, Because so much of what happens with Hinata is only because he was able to say I need to learn to fight on my own.
em
14:22
And I feel like people kind of downplay Hinata because he's such a goof. That's a mistake, bitch.
rainbow
14:27
Especially in this episode. He is not being goofy, he is fierce the entire time. Yeah.
em
14:32
Like there's a reason he's on the court. Honey, Exactly.
rainbow
14:34
And we have Noya giving a little compliment to Inoshita for a nice receive and Tanaka being jealous that Noya never compliments him and even Asahi is like that's a big deal. Well, it is Like Noya is like the expert at receiving, and so when he compliments you on a receive, and especially because of the way that Noya is like, he's not going to say you did a good job if you didn't, yes, so like you can believe it.
em
14:58
So now Inoshita, you know he came up with this plan and he was able to execute it, and we have coach Ukai on the sidelines talking about now. He'll feel more confident after nailing that play. Like beforehand, Ennoshita still felt like he was just a replacement, he wasn't really in the team, and now he feels like he is. And then, interestingly enough, he looks towards Yamaguchi and thinks to himself it's difficult.
rainbow
15:19
Yes, I want to. Yeah, I guess we don't need to talk about that in the spoiler zone now that you mentioned it, but I I had some thoughts, okay, about that, so maybe, yeah, maybe, I will do a little mention of it. I have a note here because it's because there's a lot of Takaru and Hinata making eye contact in this episode and Hinata looking pissed he like, maybe not pissed, but just looking like determined, I guess, is a better word and so I feel like if the last, if the first set of this game was Captain versus Captain, was Takeru versus Daichi, this third set is Shorty versus Shorty. It's wannabe tiny giant versus wannabe tiny giant.
em
15:54
Yes, and we kind of you know we've been seeing that from Hinata's point of view that Takeru is kind of this threat to the little giant title. But now we get to see it from Takeru's point of view. He also was inspired by the little giant as a kid, watching him on tv and now I mean really seeing it from his point of view. I get it like he sees Hinata, who is another tiny giant, honestly, and that's who he wants to beat. Of course I'm like, fuck you, you'll never beat my boy. But you know I I get the, the rivalry that's there. They're both kind of they're inspired by the same senpai and they're going after the same title.
rainbow
16:26
And I wonder because Takeru has a moment. Maybe it's a little bit later on, but he like thinks to himself about the fact that Hinata is wearing the same number he's on the same team, like I'm sure, for Takeru, there is a little bit of just like I want to be.
16:41
I want to be wearing that jersey and I want to be wearing that number and I want to be that person. and I think and he probably does feel he's like, well, I am he. He does probably feel like he has more of those skills than Hinata does yeah, but you'll never be glamour.
em
16:56
True, you'll never be glamour. So then we have Tsukki relaying a message to Kageyama from coach Ukai that now that we're getting towards the end of the game, it would be okay to start giving Asahi the ball more. Then we see Kageyama's thought process that says oh, that's some basic shit. He says to himself Hinata's in the back, so of course they're going to be more focused now on our powerful left. So the move really is to. Then he sends it to Inoshita, who hasn't gotten many hits in. But they're not expecting that. And a member of the other team thinks what a gutsy first year.
rainbow
17:26
Yes, and I want to talk a little bit about the way Tsukishima and Kageyama communicate here, because if they are not fighting, they're so dispassionate with each other.
em
17:35
Very cut and dry, the least passionate co -workers you've ever seen.
rainbow
17:40
Just literally giving you the information, and then Tsukishima does have a little bit, like you know, if you're smart enough or whatever.
17:47
at the end they added that in the dub. Oh, they did okay. Yeah, just a little bitchy thing. And then Kageyama's just like okay, and then is this where we have, where we get to see, um, the number 11 from Wakatani flub his serve. I actually don't remember. Anyway, this is where I have a note about it, because some of you might remember that when we talked about Akizawa Go from a few episodes ago and, as a reminder, that's the grown man who has beef with Tsukoshi and the kanji is the same, but the readings are different, which I think is something that's so fascinating about Japanese that you can have a character that looks exactly the same but has a different meaning. Yeah, and so I just thought that was interesting. Yeah, so that's the number 11 is Matsushima Tsuyoshi. And then we get one of my favorite moments ever from the dub, which is Saeko, cheering them on and screaming kill them in the face. Is that what she said? I missed it. That's what she says in the dub and I love it.
em
18:51
I was like I want Saeko nee-san in my cheering section, seriously she gets right to the point, yes, and we also have a cute asaNoya moment. asa, he, you know he hits it too hard and it's out. But before he can even really finish saying I'm sorry, nishiNoya like hits him in the stomach and is like we'll get the next one also just side note, nishiNoya sounding extra bakugo this episode, that's fine. And then Ennoshita is that captain, because Hinata and Kageyama are starting to panic a little bit and they're moving fast and Ennoshita is like Hinata, how do you start a good jump? And he like, with good footing, and we have the captain of the other team thinking we no longer have that disadvantage of them not having their captain, because Enoshita is now really fully realizing that role.
rainbow
19:34
And Enoshita gives Hinata time to make that solid approach and which I think is so beautiful.
em
19:41
Okay, now, how do we wrap this game up?
rainbow
19:44
Okay, so we have Takeraru going to spike and I think it's Hinata and somebody else, maybe Kageyama is going to block and Takeru he gets it's a. It's going to be a block out, yeah, or not a block out. It's gonna be, um, like a block point where he like hits it off the blocker and then it goes out. So maybe that is a block out. Anyway, I don't know terminology. Anyway, he hits it against Hinata's hand and it's going out and it looks like surely this isn't, you know, this is going to be fine. But Enoshita jumps up and does like a very clean pass, but it's not like a, it's not like a direct hit, it's not going over the net, it like kind of resets it. So his approach so that he can spike it.
em
20:24
Yep, and they win the game.
rainbow
20:27
Yes, and I think importantly, Takaru, when he's up in the air and he's making that spike, he's like you're too late, Hinata. But then, Hinata, he sees, he like looks in Hinata's eyes and he sees that Hinata knows where he's going to put the ball and starts moving his hands.
em
20:48
And that's how he's able to get that block touch. But Ennoshita is there to save the day and they win and everyone's excited. People have a lot of intimate moments with Shoyo in midair at the net. Yes but yeah, and so they're walking off the court and we see Daichi. And can I just say, why is he so baby girl about this? Like he's got like a hand on the back of his head, he's all sheepish and he's like sorry guys, dear old daddy had to take a nap, like it's odd energy. It's really sweet and, of course, the boys are so excited to see him again.
rainbow
21:15
I think right before this is when we get the moment of Hinata saying to Kageyama like one-on-one, I couldn't fight again. I couldn't fight and win against Takeru and Kageyama's like, well, yeah, you suck. Oh, my god, you know what's really interesting about this?
em
21:28
this word choice is kind of a callback, because he says to Hinata you're like a hundred years behind him. But before, when Inoshita is comparing himself to Daichi, when Tanaka is cheering him up, he said he starts to say if you're trying to be like Daichi, you have at least 10, no, at least one year before you can do it, and it's like a realistic number. And then we have Kageyama with it'll be a hundred years before you're, because he can never. He has to be so harsh to poor Hinata.
rainbow
21:51
Yeah, he just simply will not believe that he's going to be good. At least that's, and that's the thing is. He says that with his words, but his actions say otherwise.
em
21:58
You clearly believe in Hinata, you fucking jerk but yeah, so Daichi's being shy and demure at the gig and everyone is happy to have dad back. And then Daichi tells Ennoshita he had been watching since this their point was at 20 and they were doing so well that he actually thought if he did join them he'd disrupt their rhythm. And he tells Ennoshita you know, nice, receive on the last one. And then we have the most ridiculous reaction from Ennoshita. So you would think Ennoshita would be happy with this. But he kind of runs off and his little posse is like why is he upset? Because he's at the bathroom and he's washing his face. And I think he's like don't get ahead of yourself just because dad praised you. Like you still have a long way to go, you idiot. Like I don't know.
rainbow
22:40
That's interesting. So in the dub it's a little bit different. I think he's dealing with some complicated feelings because in the dub he's saying like I fought to the end but I'm relieved that it's over. I think he's still kind of fighting with that like I don't know if I want to call it slacker, like quitter mentality, right of. Like you know, like I I fought and like it felt good to win, but I'm also so glad that Daichi is back and I don't have to do that again. Oh, you know what that makes sense and I think that's what's going on. I also just want to say when Daichi comes back, Suga punches him so many times in the stomach it's like honey. He's going to have to go back to the nurse. Yeah, literally please.
em
23:20
This is where we have one of the funniest K and he excuses himself to go to the bathroom and Hinata, who's usually pretty emotionally intelligent, but he is still stupid, it's just like wow, he must have really had to go to the bathroom. And then Kageyama is like he must have had to take a shit and Hinata is like that's so vulgar, say poop, it's so ridiculous. And they go shit poop Say poopy.
rainbow
23:43
yeah, he's like, don't say it like that. And it's just like, and I think it's so funny that Kageyama is usually so well-mannered but then he pulls out a must have had to take a shit when it comes to Hinata, I just feel like he does go down to those depths, I think it feels like he said it for Hinata. It feels like he said it because he knew that Hinata was gonna get annoyed by they definitely.
em
24:00
I think they do it subconsciously, but they this is how they flirt and talk and interact. Is they bait each other?
rainbow
24:05
Yeah, yeah, absolutely, and Kageyama's been doing it this whole episode.
em
24:08
Yes, and then, of course, Tsukki, the boyfriend, is the only one who knows that, like I don't think he's really going to the bathroom. Not that he'll follow him and comfort him, but Tsukki knows that Yamaguchi is actually just upset.
rainbow
24:19
Yes, well, and I think we get to see. I think we get to see, I think in the next episode we get to actually see where Yamaguchi goes.
em
24:25
Yeah, we'll get more of that later, but for now that's all we get. And then we cut to Pineapple Head, walking up to Takeru. They're outside, you know, they have to get ready for their little meeting and we get a tearful Mokai from Takeru and the dub was rough.
rainbow
24:40
The dub was so bad. He's like one more time, I want to play, I want to play, I want to play good and it's just Listen. I understand that being emotional on a recording can be difficult, but like it, just I just it's because, like the character's tearing up and it's clearly supposed to be like acting, like he's crying and like this voice actor was not even trying to bring any tears to his eyes. It sounded like he was mocking the character Very whiny.
25:06
And then we finally end with we have our four idiots eating fiercely as they watch another game, because whoever wins this game will be the team they play next. And so they're trying to see are they going to be playing Date Tech, or are they going to be playing Seijo Dun dun, dun, dun, dun dun? And then it's over and it's done with, and next episode, I think, we're going to find out who they're playing.
em
25:28
Yeah, I think we'll have kind of a transitionary episode. I'm excited. All right, now it's time for manga versus anime covers, chapters 121 until about halfway through 125. There are just a few little things I noted. when he just says that thing about, I know they're good. we just have to figure out when, like how to beat them. We actually cut to Ushijima walking with a teammate and the teammates saying like oh, who do you think we're gonna end up going against in the finals. And Ushijima is just like it doesn't matter who it is, because it's always that, like, we have to beat them no matter what. But I'm like fuck me, just do some small talk, just be normal for two seconds. I know you can't.
rainbow
26:03
Maybe take down the arrogance like just a notch, Because it feels like yeah, it feels like that's coming from a place of like it doesn't matter who we're playing, we will crush them anyway. And it's like, maybe you yeah, just maybe.
em
26:15
And then in chapter 123, it starts with Saeko announcing the results of a character popularity contest, and I just thought this was really interesting because we're at chapter 123. So it's and I looked it up it's like September 2014. So we're kind of seeing where the fandom is at, and so, and Saeko is annoyed that her younger brother did not make the top 10. He made 12. And then, just so you know who the top 10 was back in 2014, it was Hinata came in at number one, obviously, Suga at number two, Kageyama at three, Tsukki four, Oikawa five, Noya and then Yamaguchi seven, which I was surprised at Kuro at eight, Iwaizumi at nine and Kenma at 10. That's interesting.
rainbow
26:57
Okay, and that's september 2014, so the manga's been out for about two years. Do we know if the anime has started yet, because I know it's season one starts in 2014, but I don't remember I have no idea, so probably just season one still. Yeah, I mean, if the anime is even out, it's only season one, so it's really just the manga people are going off of. And I wonder because it is fascinating to have Tsukki as number four.
em
27:20
Well, and also just think about we have a much smaller, because obviously a top 10 would look way different now. But we haven't met a lot of people. So that was just kind of an interesting little insight of 10 years in the past and then so they left this out of the anime completely. But when Takeru's older brother is like crying about how good his younger brother is, he also says he's relenting the days of when he was the captain because apparently they were a very good pair together on the court. And then his sister says some shitty thing about how well they're a lot stronger now without you.
rainbow
27:47
Oh, that's so fascinating.
em
27:48
Yeah, they left a little detail out, so I guess the older brother used to play with him.
rainbow
27:52
Yeah, well, because they have like a little moment in the anime. Anime, I think they swapped that out for this tiny moment where, like, the older brother says something and then I guess it's the sister. I thought maybe it was the mom, but maybe it's the sister who says like you know, sometimes it seems like you're the younger brother and he's the older one that's still in the manga.
em
28:06
It's just they chopped that first bit, that first little bit about them being on the same team. Interesting, yeah, right. So you know a little behind the scenes about Takaru's family, I guess. But that's it for manga versus anime. So now it's on with rainbow, with the character spotlight. Who are we talking about today?
rainbow
28:23
we're talking about nakashima Takeru. I have a little note from the wiki on his personality quote. He is the one that encourages and comforts his teammates during games. Like Hinata, he is very passionate about volleyball and was inspired to play by the little giant. Nakashima is also shown to be quite the good sport, acknowledging his opponents and their strengths and even complimenting enoshita when he had to take over for Daichi.
28:46
His family name is Nakashima, which means island in a river, and, as we've heard from a couple of names, shima means island, um, and it's in a lot of given names or a lot of family names. His given name is Takeru, which means fierce. He is fierce and I think that's interesting because I didn't even I hadn't realized that was his given name, um, until I did the character spotlight and I'd already written all my notes, and fierce is a word that I used to describe Hinata during this game. It's like he, Takeru, brings out Hinata's fierceness. Yeah, I like that. And then, moving on to his character sheet, he goes to Wakatani Minami High School.
29:27
He is in class 3-1. His position is wing spiker. His height is 5'8" and I actually remembered to convert it this time, so he is 172.72 centimeters. His birthday is August 20th. Oh, that's my friend's birthday and I know he's a Leo and I think that makes sense for him. Yeah, his favorite food is Zunda mochi soybean rice cakes. Oh, I don't know what that is, but that's a lot of stuff going on. And then his current worry is it feels like his father's hairline is starting to recede little by little every day.
em
30:01
Oh man, dude, you're too young to notice your parents aging. Well you know.
rainbow
30:05
I mean he has to be so responsible. I'm sure he's got to think about it a lot.
em
30:08
This kid makes me think of my responsible little sister, who will be the one to definitely help my parents when they get old.
rainbow
30:23
Takaru is going to be aiding his parents into that good night, that's for sure. Absolutely all right. And then, looking at his ability parameters, he's got a lot of strengths here.
30:27
His lowest is intelligence, which is a three, but his jumping, his power, his speed and his technique all fours and his stamina is a five pretty strong stats here yeah, I mean, you know, I think it makes sense, you know, and he, he is a third year, whereas Hinata is a first year, and I think you know, do we think that this is a good predictor of, maybe, what Hinata might look like in his third year? I think so, yeah, yeah, I totally agree. So, yeah, it makes sense that Hinata isn't able to beat him yet, but I think the fact that, as a team, karasuno was able to beat them says a lot yeah, for sure.
em
30:57
okay, are we ready? It's time for the world's favorite game. It's who and Haikyuu, and today we're really just talking about our favorite characters as wizard of oz, slash wicked, who would be who? I do want to start out, because we watched wizard of oz first, before we watched wicked, and we had already come up with who was who for the main character, so we have Kageyama as the scarecrow Brainless, obviously. Hinata Is Dorothy I think. Main character syndrome Hello. Tsukishima is the Tin man because he's heartless. And then Yamaguchi needs courage.
rainbow
31:27
He has the cowardly lion. And then Yachi, because she's adorable, she's Toto.
em
31:32
She can also be the cowardly lion, though she's kind of a perfect cowardly lion.
rainbow
31:36
Oh what? I agree? Yeah, maybe like together, Yamaguchi and yachi make the perfect cowardly lion. Hell yeah, there can be two. They can be lion twins who would?
em
31:44
be the wizard.
rainbow
31:45
Who would be the wizard?
em
31:48
you know what? We haven't met him yet, but the captain of Shiratorizawa washijo, oh the the, not the captain, the coach.
rainbow
31:54
The coach, I mean yes, yeah, absolutely. Who would be the wicked witch of the west, wicked witch of the?
em
31:59
west. Oh also, if you follow me on blue sky, our friend, our dear friend, tiny dinosaur, who is the reason we're together, who introduced rainbow to Haikyuu in the first place. She was asking for drawing prompts and I was like, please draw kagehina as Galinda and Elphaba, and she came through go check her out. I think that Glinda and Elphaba's dynamic is very kakahina, especially the song. What is this feeling when they're literally competing about who is more nervous around the other one?
32:27
and particularly the line there's a strange exhilaration in such total detestation not only does that sum up every anime rivalry ever, but, like it, is very perfect for kagehina.
rainbow
32:39
Yeah and yeah, it's just like yeah, the whole what my head is really, well, my face is flushing. Yeah, it's like sit down, yeah, and so, and so Small Dinosaurs made two amazing drawings. When I release, when we release this episode, we are also going to retweet that on the pod account so everyone can see it. And yeah, just go follow her, she's an amazing artist. I currently have one of the arts as my phone lock screen because I love it so much and I love kagehina and I love Galinda and Elphaba and I love wicked and I think it's perfect I feel like Hinata Oikawa Kuroo.
em
33:13
These are the Galindas.
rainbow
33:14
I feel, definitely, I think popular is Oikawa as Galinda for sure, yeah, I think Kuroo could be the wizard. Yes, yeah, I agree, I think Kuroo's the wizard who is the wicked witch of the west in the wizard of oz. Though, in the wizard of oz, do we think that's Oikawa? Do we think that?
em
33:33
I don't really know. Takeru, or like Tsukishima, the Tender, Tsukishima, and then Yamaguchi is the Wicked Witch of the East. Who are the flying monkeys? The NPCs? Yes, absolutely, all the second years are flying monkeys.
rainbow
33:49
Oh, I think you could also do. I think Asahi would be another good cowardly lion. Yes.
em
33:54
I also think Kiyoko would be a beautiful Glinda and Yachi would be a good Elphaba as well.
rainbow
33:59
Oh, yes, I think that could be fun. I have seen some. You showed me a few edits, or at least one edit. That was Oikawa as Glinda and Kagama as Elphaba, yes, which I think makes sense for the beginning of their relationship, but I think later on it doesn't make as much sense. Who's Kenma, madame Marble, and Kuro's the wizard? Jeff goldblum is Kuroo, Kuroo is jeff goldblum. This is the second time that we've done oh my god, that's right, because he was jeff goldblum in jurassic park, Kuroo just is jeff goldblum there's something about him.
34:33
If jeff goldblum did cameos and I got a cameo from Jeff Goldblum it would definitely just be him reading Kuroo Tetsuru's lines from Haikyuu. He'd be like I don't know what any of this is, but here you go. That was a terrible Jeff Goldblum impression. Yeah, is there anybody else that we can think of for any of these characters? Oh, who would be Fiyero? We're going with Hinata's Glinda, and, and, oh, it's somebody that we haven't talked about yet. It's Atsumu. Okay, that's what I thought you're gonna say. Anyway, it's a character from season four. If you know, you know, and I'm sure you do, I'm sure you do. Oh, Boq me.
35:14
And Boq we deserve each other, me and Boq. Who the fuck is Boq? Who would be Boq tanaka, tanaka, it's totally tanaka, it is tanaka tell me I'm wrong, you can't. And galinda helped it. Come true, do we do? We know who I feel like Nessarose doesn't get a lot of characterization in part one not really.
35:39
I feel like I still don’t know who she is yeah, okay, any other songs that we think I mean defying gravity feels like Hinata song, I will say because even though we're saying like Kageyama is Elphaba, I feel like Hinata for defying gravity there's also a song in act two that is gonna rip you apart.
em
35:55
Well, they did it in glee, so I'm aware of it. Yeah, that's. That's another good Kagehina song Is for good, yeah, but yeah, I hope that this inspired you guys To check out Wicked, if you haven't, and if you didn't have an interest, well you should. I hope you feel bullied into it. Alright, and before we go into the spoiler zone and f-l-y-h-q-p-o-d, you can also email us your woes, your joys and your joes at fly iq pod at gmailcom. That's f-l-y-h-q-p-o-d at gmail dot com. Now it's time for the spoiler zone, and now we have rainbow had a few things to say, so take it away, yeah so I just wanted to talk.
rainbow
36:36
So I talked at the top of the episode about opposite hitter versus outside hitter. And Hinata becomes the opposite hitter for msby and I just love that that. And you know they said it's the most versatile hitter, who is a master of both offense and defense. And I said Hinata shoyo, your growth is unmatched.
36:55
Yeah, Takeru is pissing in his britches well, and speaking of that, so Takeru says like I'm going to be the next tiny giant, no, I'm going to be even better than the little giant. And in a way that kind of does become true, because Takeru, he doesn't surpass Hinata, at least where we see in the time skip, but he does end up on a division three V-League team and so, which is even lower than Tsukishima, but it does still make him better than the actual tiny giant, Tenma, who doesn't even go pro at all, like he gives up. He doesn't do volleyball after high school, right. So in a way Takeru is correct. It's just, you know, you're not. It kind of shows that like that goal post of the tiny giant like isn't enough, like you have to be shooting for even better than that, yeah.
37:35
And then I just wanted to mention briefly. So when Ukai is talking about how Enoshita has found his place on the team and how hard that is to do, he looks to Yamaguchi and it just made me think again about how Enoshita and Yamaguchi are both future captains yeah, yeah, and they have a lot of similarities, I think, where they don't have very obvious strong weapons yet, but there's potential there and there's a lot of talk in this episode about like, oh you know, just give enoshita a year and we'll see where he's at, and by next year he's the captain and we know that he's killing it.
38:05
Hell yeah all right.
em
38:07
Well, I think that's it. That is all right. Everyone. Thanks for joining us for this episode. next time we'll be seeing who we're going up against, so stay tuned and until then, fly high.
