hello everyone and welcome to fly a queer Haikyuu podcast. I'm rainbow they she
em
00:11
and I'm em and today we're talking about season 2, episode 19. The iron wall can be rebuilt again and again.
rainbow
00:20
in the dub I really I don't know if it's actually the dub or if it's just the DVDs, but the names that they have for these episodes are such like I think they're very literal translations. Yeah, em is looking at it in the notes and is upset. Do you want to read it or do you want?
em
00:34
me to. It's just kind of funny like it feels like they are just trying to be different because the dub is the iron wall can be rebuilt any number of times which is just like, which is kind of like it's saying the same thing, but it's saying it less succinctly.
rainbow
00:48
It's like this is an edit, like if I was an editor and like somebody had written this as a line in a book, I'd be like you need to make this more concise that is the perfect representation of how clunky the dub feels to me.
em
01:00
Yes, yes, but anyway moving on. happy almost new Year everybody.
rainbow
01:05
Yes, this episode is coming out on December 30th, so I thought I'd wish everyone a Happy New Year.
em
01:11
We hope that you had an okay year at least, and if not, hey, it's over and now we're going into 2025. Do you have a bit of a resources list for us, rainbow?
rainbow
01:19
Yes, I do so. I brought this up on an episode that came out shortly after the 2024 United States presidential election. The list has been updated to include links for ways to help Sudan, Congo and Palestine and, as always, if you have any suggestions for the list, we're always looking for new resources to add. So please feel free to reach out. You can DM us, email us, leave a comment under an episode, wherever you want to put it. We are happy to add those links. The resource list can always be found in our show notes now and it can also be found on our socials, and if you're having trouble finding it, having trouble accessing it, just go ahead and give us an email, DM us, let us know. We really want you to be able to access that and find those tips and find those links.
em
02:02
Well, thank you, Rainbow, for collecting that information.
rainbow
02:04
Yes, of course, and I also just want to say that I'm still obsessed with Wicked and it will never end. It's so good and I'm so mad because I didn't say even all the things I wanted to say last episode. But I'm not going to talk about it anymore. You can go to my blue sky if you want to hear all of my thoughts.
em
02:20
The way that that was not even in our notes section. That came right from the heart.
rainbow
02:24
I just can't stop thinking about it. I've been singing it all week. Okay, moving on to housekeeping, very exciting, our one year podcast anniversary is coming up in February.
em
02:35
Yeah, I cannot believe it. We actually we just got our end of year stats from Buzzsprout, which is the website that we use to publish our podcast, and it was really cool to see the stats. We're so close to 10k hits and it's all because of you guys. Thank you guys for tuning in every week Like that's crazy and to see all the different countries and towns that people listen to us in. Like one of our top cities is somewhere in Ontario Shout out, ontario.
rainbow
02:59
Yeah, we had a lot of Canada. I think Canada was like. I don't know if they were the top country, but they were definitely up there.
em
03:07
K. Yeah, we had a lot of Canada. I think Canada was like I don't know if they were the top country, but they were definitely up there. Kiki wants to be involved in this recording. We got her a new cat tree and it is bigger and pinker than ever, and she is on her throne, well. But yeah, the point of this is, how should we celebrate?
rainbow
03:15
Oh, yes, yeah, how should we celebrate our one year anniversary? So our very first episode was released on February 3rd, and we are having another episode released on February 3rd, and we are having another episode released on February 3rd, and so we want to do something to celebrate and we want to do something with you all because, you know, the reason we didn't stop doing this podcast is because we had people actually listening and engaging and that was really inspiring to me. It made me feel really good and made me feel like you know what we're doing is not just screaming into the void. So you know, we want to involve you. Involve you. So, like, let us know if you have any ideas.
03:45
like I said, this episode comes out on december 30th, so we have like a whole month to help prepare. So any ideas that you all might have we've already done a q a, so we probably won't do something like that again, but we want something to include you, maybe something like you write us in and tell us what Haikyuu means to you and why you love the show, and we can can share that with everybody. If we do something along those lines where you're like writing something for us to read on the pod. You're welcome to put your name, but you're also welcome to be anonymous if you would prefer to be anonymous. So that's kind of what I'm thinking, but we're open to other ideas and we're really excited and, yeah, again, we're just so happy to have had you with us for this past year.
em
04:20
Yes, oh my God, thank you guys. And for this past year yes, oh my God, thank you guys. And that's a really cute idea, rainbow, we'll probably do something like that, and just to add to that, you may be hearing some new voices next year. Specifically, I will be out of town for a week in January to visit family, and then Rainbow will be out of town for a week plus in February. So we decided to have some guest moments. So there'll be a week in January and a week in February hopefully this could fall apart, I guess, but our friends seem excited about it where we're going to watch an episode with a newbie, someone who might not be very familiar, and see what they have to say. And so a couple of new, fresh things for the new year Buckle in.
rainbow
04:58
Yeah, we're excited. We thought it would be fun to have these and they'll probably be a little bit shorter episodes maybe,, but we thought it'd be fun to have like little mini-sodes. And you know, and we're using our friends because that's how we know how to record is here in person this is a real diy project, just to remind y'all.
em
05:15
All right, well, I think that's enough of chit chat for now. What do you think?
rainbow
05:19
I think so I think we're ready for m's amazing recap. All right, count me down me down, son ni ichi.
em
05:25
It's Date Tech versus Seijo. As Karasuno waits with bated breath to see who their next opponent will be, we meet the newest rookie addition to the Iron Wall and have a few laughs before the next showdown. In a battle like this, it's the strongest six that walk away the victor. In this episode of Haikyuu, I love how your recaps always end with that. Well, that's going to be the new thing. That's the only way you know how to end it Well.
rainbow
05:49
speaking of beginnings, we start out with the Date Tech third years showing up to watch their kohai.
em
05:55
Yes, I just want to say this episode felt five minutes long and I think it's because this is one of those episodes that we're not Karasuno is not playing a game, and so I just feel like it's more focused on the humor and it's a lot of fun. So, yes, we have our Date. Tech is playing against Seijo and our old third years come to watch.
rainbow
06:14
Yes, and I love that we get this kind of like third year versus third year moment because we have the Date Tech third year trio and then our Karasuno third year trio and they have like a little moment of realizing they're there.
em
06:24
Everything, like all the interactions, especially in the first half of this episode, is fucking golden. The Datek seniors are wondering what set they're on and Daichi is just like this or they're like who won the first set? And Daichi is like. Seijo won the first set, all like bashful. And one of the third years is making a face and Asahi's kind of making a face because these are their rivals and there's that rivalry energy, even though neither of them are playing against each other at the moment.
rainbow
06:53
Well and they'll never play against each other again in high school because these third years are gone. And I think that's interesting because I feel like back in season one we kind of got that, the idea that the date tech third years are leaving and it's up to the second years and we kind of have that tension with Karasuno where there was a potential of our Karasuno third years not coming back Like they talk. To have that talk with them, you need to be thinking about your futures and preparing for your future careers. Boo, capitalism.
em
07:20
Yeah, and the old date tech captain notes like oh, karasuno still has their third years, because I think it's probably a team by team basis, but I think the norm probably is that the third years bow out towards the end of the year.
rainbow
07:33
Yeah, absolutely. I think that's kind of the expectation and I think one of the reasons I don't know if they've mentioned this yet, but I think they talk about at some point the reason the spring nationals happen in like January. They're not even really in the spring anymore, they're just kind of in the new year and that's so third years can participate, but still a lot of teams, I think, still like cut, cut out the third years and let the second years take over, which you know. I can see that making sense and we kind of see the effect that has on date tech and we'll talk about that as we get into the game. But real quick before we move on, move on.
08:02
I did want to mention that I this is the kind of episode that I completely forgot existed and it doesn't exactly make up for the fact that we never get any personal backstories for any of the characters.
08:13
I would still like to know more about Aone and Futakuchi, and even you know a new character we're about to talk about. Like I'd like to know a little bit more about them, but I do like that Date Tech is getting more screen time. Like this is kind of a game about Date Tech and I just think it's so fascinating that, like you know, this is, I feel like Date Tech is like they're almost on the same level of as Nekoma of like a team that or even Seijo that is like a team that like keeps even more than more so than Seijo. They're a team that keeps coming back like we see they're like they. They're one of the ones like in later seasons we'll see them like they watch the Karasuno games online and on tv, but we just it's so strange to me that we just do not get anything personal about them.
08:54
It is interesting because they're certainly one of the powerhouse schools, but maybe it's just one of those things where it's like, hey, we got to cut somebody's backstory, so date tech got the axe and maybe it's something, maybe it, maybe there is like like some sort of thing about like they are like the iron wall and like maybe it's just it's so much the focus on that that it's like to to and because like they are like a unit as the wall, to like take each of them and give them a personal backstory. Maybe some that would like take away from some of that. Oh, you're getting real English teacher with this theory. Catch me on FX every Tuesday
em
09:24
Oh, english teacher, yeah, no, that's an interesting theory and I think it's also funny because you know, date wall their whole thing, date wall their whole thing, date tech, their whole thing is being in the wall. But then we meet the plucky new rookie who is giving rooster. He's another one with like a bird type of haircut. He's a little baby, he's a little chick, yeah, but he is also huge. And it is, of course and I only wrote down his nickname, not his full name, so excuse me, but Kogane is our new addition to the wall. He is a first year setter. He's ginormous and he's not very good.
rainbow
10:03
No, he's not. I also want to note that they're playing Seijo, and Seijo is in their alternative uniforms, which I like to see, and it's also interesting to see Seijo play someone that's not Karasuno yeah, I think that's.
10:17
I think that really gives us,, I think it gives us more about Seijo. I think it's also because Date Tech getting even more English teacher here. Date Tech is the team that they lost against when Asahi, Daichi and Sugo were second years. Date Tech was the team that took them down, I think probably in preparation for the spring nationals.
10:39
Now Seijo is playing the team that took Karasuno down and we'll see what happens to Date Tech is playing the team that took Karasuno down and we'll see what happens to Date Tech, and so I think for Karasuno watching this game, no matter who wins, there's still going to be this like fear that they will lose because these are two teams that they've each lost against. And for Kagehina, kagehina has never lost against Date Tech, but they've lost against Seijo, and I love all of the Kagehina moments in this episode. We get one right at the top. I love Kageyama and Hinata just like talking about this game together and they're talking about like the iron wall. Then we see the big boned setter, which we'll talk about that because they use that term a lot,, but we see him like make a set and we don't.
em
11:18
I feel like we don't really see what's going on on the court, but we see Hinata and Kageyama's reaction, where they're like whoa them fanboying over volleyball together is really sweet, and I like to imagine that they go to games together outside of school when they get older.
rainbow
11:32
Yes, this is good, Like this is absolutely. Like. I love the idea of them like sitting around and watching volleyball together and like this is how they always talk about it and I really like that. We get to see both of their excitement, like obviously.
em
11:49
Hinata is louder with his excitement, but I really like getting to see Kageyama's little excited face too. He's so cute.
rainbow
11:51
Yeah, he just is giving little baby boy with his excitement, yes,, and then, and so then we kind of we go away from the stands and from Kage, from the Karasuno reactions and the third year reactions, and now we're on the court with Datek and Futakuchi. Who is the captain now? Yes, and he is. He has to deal with this big boned, idiot setter. So they say big boned in the dub. They say it so many times. That's really funny.
em
12:14
What do they call him in? Well, I mean, his like name is like the giant setter and they say tall, but I don't think big boned ever comes up.
rainbow
12:22
That must be a like a mouth flap thing. They must not have been able to say giant, they had to say big bone.
em
12:27
But they say it so many fucking times so our big boned boy did a set that was way too high and Futakuchi couldn't get it over. And it is interesting to see Futakuchi like you know he was, he had no problem being a jerk to his senpais, but you can see he is trying to like help and mold Kogane because like he's clearly annoyed. But he's still like, just do it lower next time, but not too low, somewhere in the middle and it's just fun to watch. And Kogane is such a like just earnest, like wide-eyed pup. He's very much giving over eager puppy this whole game and he just wants to do a good job and he's like okay.
rainbow
13:07
And then the old third years are like laughing at watching their old annoying kohai struggle now as the new captain well, it's so funny because I, I guess I didn't really think about the fact, like, well, of course these third years know Kogane , like they've been in practice with him. It's just because, like we as an audience didn't see him in season one, this is the first time we're seeing him.
13:21
To me it's like, oh, like he just showed up, like I didn't think about the fact that there would be like crossover, there would be like a lap or overlapping, like timelines there with the third years, obviously having seen Kogane like train and get ready, and I think one of those third years was the setter originally, so he probably worked a lot with Kogane, and so I just it was like something I didn't think about, where I was like, oh, I guess Kokane just didn't show up out of nowhere.
em
13:48
Well, yeah, I know these teams are always changing and evolving and, as always, I always think about because we'll see at the end of the game. You know they'll reference how scary he'll be when he gets better. And it always just makes me think of like what a second year and a third year Karasuno would have looked like, with all these people coming back and getting better. But it's always evolving on the court. It certainly is all right.
rainbow
14:05
Yeah, the crows are not the only one constantly evolving. Also in the dub, I feel like Kogane calls Futakuchi futachi I didn't they struggle with his name before?
em
14:16
I feel like that's happened before but like it doesn't like.
rainbow
14:18
Nobody comments on it, nobody says it. I'm like, I don't think that's a nickname. I think he just said his name wrong.
em
14:23
I think they say his name wrong. I feel like we've had this conversation where they're saying his name wrong in the dub.
rainbow
14:28
Maybe I think that they own. You know what we probably have. I should have looked back at the notes. Yeah, I think maybe they just say his name wrong. Of course it makes me think am I saying his name wrong and With him in?
em
14:40
it. My ears are open when I listen to the sub. It's fucking Futakuchi. Yeah, fucking, absolutely so. Then the date tech old captain you know proudly explains to the Karasuno third years because I guess he thinks he has to impress them that you know, Kogane is their new weapon, the giant setter. It sounds impressive, but this guy sucks and we have him totally missing. And the coach catches the ball on the sidelines yes, missing.
rainbow
15:06
And the coach catches the ball on the sidelines yes, I love this moment so much. I love the date tech captain being like I gotta show off for these Karasuno guys,, first and foremost. And he's so proud. And then Kogane completely whiffs it and I love Oikawa's face, did you see?
em
15:16
yes, yes, they all have that. There's a lot of the like round blanked out eyes in this episode because everyone's just like and I wonder if for Oikawa, I'm sure for for all of the setters.
rainbow
15:28
Seeing something like that is so embarrassing where it's like I'm cringing on your behalf and the coach, the way he just catches the ball so simply and is just looking at him like the fuck man.
em
15:38
I also love the like assistant coach going nice.
rainbow
15:44
Yes, this episode is just pure comedy. I also love. I don't know how this goes in the sub, but in the dub Hanamaki does a serve and he fucks it up and then he's like well, that sucked.
em
15:55
That's funny. No, it was like you know, don't mind. And then Kogane tries another, because what he's doing is he wants to go for the setter dumps because of course they're cool, but he's so obvious about it and Seijo, they can see that coming from a mile away. I was honestly a little surprised that Kageyama didn't have more negative commentary for Kogane's playing. Could this be growth or is he just? There is something kind of refreshing about Kogane's playing. I think there's multiple things going on here.
rainbow
16:20
I think there is growth from Kageyama. I think I think there's multiple things going on here. I think there is. I think there is growth from Kageyama.
16:25
I think, he's a little less of a bitch about shit than he used to be.
16:29
Also, I feel like that kind of criticism is kind of reserved for Hinata. Yeah, you're right, I feel like he doesn't really he doesn't criticize anyone else like that except for Hinata, because because of who Hinata is, so yeah, so there's that happening. I think also, I think Kogane, I think,, you know because of who Hinata is, so yeah, so there's that happening. I think also, I think Kogane, I think,, you know, because of that like really impressive high set that Kogane did, I think Kageyama recognizes that like this kid has potential,, and so, and I think he, you know, he recognizes that he's just like, probably not as good. I think there's a third thing going on here is that they are playing Oikawa and they're playing Seijo, and I think for Kageyama, that means Oikawa is taking up a little bit more of his brain than any other opponent would. I think there's always a little bit of that going on with Kageyama and Oikawa, where he's thinking a lot about what Oikawa is doing. I think you're absolutely right.
17:19
I also want to say so. There's a moment here where I think it's when they're talking about the setter dump thing and Kogane is like but it's just so cool and one of the third year setters in the dub he says what we've got here is a failure to communicate, and I was like I feel like I've heard that before, like that's like a quote. I've definitely heard that in other things and it is. It's because if you just type girls, what we've got here, is failure to communicate oh, of course, or something else.
17:57
I'd heard that reference. I didn't know anything about the movie, I just knew. I was like this is a quote from something, and so you know, the dubs got jokes. They, they do. They certainly do, and I think that's something that dub does really well, because I think Haikyuu, like in in Japanese, I think it makes a lot of fun references like that in Japanese and I think sometimes the sub tries to translate those a little too directly and it doesn't make sense, and I think that is one thing where the dub is like okay, well, we'll make this into a joke that our audience will understand, right?
18:24
So there is a moment where Oikawa tries to spike. He's going to spike because, like, he gets the ball first and then somebody else sets and Oikawa goes to spike and everyone's like, oh my god, the setter's gonna go to spike, but he gets stopped by the iron wall and at first it's just two blockers, it's just a, Aone and Futakuchi, and it's so fucking cartoonish the way they do this where it's Kogane , like running, and you know, we have the visual of the wall, so we have Aone and we have Futakuchi, so we have two parts of the wall and then Kogane is running and the wall is like coming behind, like behind him, to lock into place, and it just looks so fucking funny. and then Oikawa gets, gets blocked and he's like, damn, I really wanted to hit that. But then we also see that Kogane , totally like hip, checks Futakuchi and Aone and I just love that moment.
em
19:09
Yeah, it's another like it's reminiscent of the kagehina hip check and it's funny because Futakuchi really takes the brunt of the fall and starts to go after Kogane about it. But then Aone who is like the scary, silent parent is like no, I should have absorbed that he's fine. And Futakuchi's like okay, I guess he's fine yeah, I love him like.
rainbow
19:27
He's like. He's like Futakuchi bay. I should have taken that hit for you, I apologize. After Oikawa gets blocked, his teammates are like making fun of him and he's like nobody asked you and I was like okay, queen. also, we get a moment of Kagehina seeing. Really, they look really excited about the new iron wall, a new challenge. They're like you see that, like fire in them, where they're like a new wall for us to overcome yeah, seriously.
em
19:51
And then you had a note here about the animation.
rainbow
19:54
I just I don't know, I think in the first half maybe I just I don't know, maybe it was just me it just seemed like the animation was like just a little less clean than usual. Well it's interesting.
em
20:04
You say that because I was having like issues on Crunchyroll where I don't know if the animation was moving too fast or what, but it was getting laggy and they would have to catch up. And I wonder if those two things are related at all, because I don't usually have those issues.
rainbow
20:17
But yeah, I think maybe there was just something, and I kind of wonder if it's like because it's not a Karasuno episode and it's really like kind of a transition, like not, I wouldn't call this filler. I don't think Haikyuu has any filler.
em
20:27
I think this term filler is starting to be misused. Filler is when things happen that doesn't contribute really to the canon or the movement of the story at all, like this still does. It's just not focused on Cross.
rainbow
20:38
No, I think, yeah, that's it, it's not. It's not a filler episode, but because it's more of a transition and it's not focused on our main characters in the same way, I do wonder if maybe there was a little bit like well, it's OK if the animation is a little off, maybe it, so we can have some really great moments later in the show.
21:00
That kind of thing you also wrote that Kogane is like a puppy he is, he's giving puppy, especially when he's like I just think some setter dumps look really awesome, like he's just so cute. He's reminding me of like Inuoka from Nekoma and then nothing thrills me more than Oikawa's serve. I love watching him serve. I just it's my favorite thing about him and I think that's correct that's not an opinion, it's just a fact absolutely yeah.
21:26
And then this is where because they even Oikawa calls him a big bone setter and I'm like what the fuck is this big bone setter nickname? Bullshit, what is this? That can't. That simply is not a like term that people throw around casually. It's like they make it. It's like to the point where it seems like it's a thing like you that can't. That simply is not a like term that people throw around casually. It's like they make it. It's like to the point where it seems like it's a thing Like you would hear it at the Olympics or something Like. And we have another big like. It's like a tiny, giant kind of.
em
21:48
Thing.
rainbow
21:49
Yeah, where it's like this is just I'm like, this is I don't like this, but I'm glad to know that that's just like a dub thing and I can let that go some.
22:06
So, right before the commercial break, this is where we get, a little bit of the libero from date tech, who is sakunami, and we get a flashback of the coach talking to him and Kogane , and I think it's just reinforcing the idea, the importance of receives and that there are no sets without receives.
22:13
But I think this is the first time where we really get a look at, like, how the libero can help the setter. I feel like so often we talk about how the setter can help a spiker if, like, the spiker isn't that good, like with kagehina, or how a receiver can really help a middle blocker if you know they're not able to block it right away, like. But this is the first time we really see the relationship between the setter and the libro in this way. There's a lot of talks about receives, but it's specifically the libro of like, it's up to you to make sure Kogane gets the ball in a way that he, like, he needs to get the ball high enough so that he can set it and I thought that was very interesting and just something we haven't really seen before well, everything is connected in volleyball absolutely, and then we have the commercial break.
22:55
But before that I just want to say because I don't know if you saw, but I left a little crying, laughing emoji,, on our notes, because em spells Futakuchi's name in her notes f-u-t-a-c-o-o-c-h-i-e. Yeah. So I just I had to say that before we moved on. And then,, I do like these we get to iwaoi commercial. You know, maybe, maybe because that like their emphasis is so much on on blocking, but I do kind of wish we had a date tech commercial break moment. We don't get that. We could have gotten, like Kogane, like trying to set for Futakuchi and it fucking up, or something like that. Like we, I feel like we could have gotten something. And don't get me wrong, I'm always happy to have Iwaoi and it's fun because it's always a wise me pissed off at Oikawa for some reason, and that's always fun. But it's just another thing where it's just like what's up date tech, like why don't, why don't they get, why don't they get the same kind of love, maybe to keep up that air of enemy mystery?
em
23:52
I don't know. Oikawa shows Kogane how a setter dump is done the third year's comment on how calm and scary he is. And now Date Tech is at match point and we get a cool shot. I don't know if you noted this, but we get a really cool shot of Seijo, as like the stands are cheering and they're at match point and Oika was like looking over his shoulder.
24:11
Then we have Kogane remembering Futakuchi's advice, which we now see as the audience A setter dump doesn't have to be a feint. You can slam that fucker in, and Kogane does, and it is successful. And this is where we have Kageyama looking very charmed. He says like wow, you couldn't stop that even if you saw it coming. Yes, and this is a great point by Futakuchi, I think you know it just feels like the feint is the way to do it, but you absolutely have. You can always just slam it in with all the force you have.
rainbow
24:39
Yeah, no, I really like that, and I think Kogane and I think because, again, because he's so big boned Kogane is capable of that, and I don't know if we see Kageyama do that, but that feels like the kind of thing we would see Kageyama do.
em
24:50
I wish I don't think he ever copies that for us to see. Anyway, that could be another thing for second year canon. You know the manga that I'm writing in my head as we rewatch the show. Yes, and then this is where we have Iwa Oe activate. So Oikawa does some move where he's trying to kind of run away from the block. I think he gives a set to Iwa in a way. That's a little complicated for him. So afterwards Iwaizumi turns to him and very scarily tells Oikawa, do what you usually do, and I'll take the challenge of getting it in.
rainbow
25:22
I said both scaring and turning on Oikawa a little bit, and then we have the commentary I don't forget who says it, but I think it's the Seijo coach says he kind of explains what happens. He says that he set the ball further from the net so it's harder for them to block, but that also makes it harder to hit. And I think what's happening here is it's kind of Oikawa not letting Iwaizumi fight in his own way. It's almost a little bit like and I think Iwaizumi's response is kind of giving like Hina to during the training camp when he told Kageyama not to go easy on him. He's like you don't. He's like you don't get to decide whether or not I can, I can hit this through. I get to make that decision when I'm in the air. So you said it like you always do.
em
25:59
Yes, yeah. It also kind of reminded me of how Tsukki explained to Kageyama like don't make the play for me with your sets.
rainbow
26:06
Yes, exactly, I had that thought too. I just didn't write it down. I'm glad you brought that up and Iwaizumi is showing everybody who the fuck he is in that moment. Yeah, we also get a moment of the Seijo guys up in the stands and they are cheering so hard, they're sweating. I love one of them is like banging his little cone on the like railing. It's just like you guys are not on the court.
em
26:29
Well, it's such a good game, I think, and it's so close. Well not really, I guess, because you know well they're so close to getting it. Yes, exactly.
rainbow
26:37
Yeah, they're like. But you know, I do think that I do think Daytech is kind of giving them a run for their money. I think that shows in the way that Oikawa felt like he had to set the ball a little bit farther. He's clearly like he is running away from their blocks a little bit. Their blocks are scary. I also have a note here that Kogane is baby confirmed, because I think somebody calls him like that little baby blocker or something.
em
27:00
And I was like he is a baby and yeah. So, as promised, they do their next play and Owaisemi goes up for it and they have all three blocks. But, as we'll see, Kogane 's arms are pretty far apart and Owaisemi goes your resolve is weak, you little first year, and slams it through his open arms. I said, baby, chill, you already got Oikawa's attention, but he slams it right through his arms and they win the game that way.
rainbow
27:25
Yeah, in the dub he says you can't fake experience first year and he slams it through and like I think we get a flash of Kagehina and their fucking Everyone's like oh my God, of course, Seijoh like jumps on Iwa. I mean, here's the thing is that I think Iwaizumi is like one of the coolest characters. Yes, and he's like one of the most badass, like powerful wing spikers we have, like he makes the coolest moves. He is like I would be scared to try to block Iwaizumi.
em
27:51
Iwaoi is the power couple actually.
rainbow
27:53
They are they really like specifically power couple?
em
28:00
Yes, Like like a specifically power couple. Yes, like they are the the most, like they are so aggressive and we definitely will get to see more of it with a character that we did meet briefly.
rainbow
28:05
We met mad dog right yeah, we met mad dog, we'll see it more as they parent mad dog together.
28:09
It's great and I think it's interesting that we don't see mad dog at all during this game. They don't feel the need to bring him out during the date tech game. And I wonder if that's just you know, I and I bet his style probably just wouldn't work with playing with date tech game. And I wonder if that's just you know, I and I bet his style probably just wouldn't work with playing with date tech. But I wonder if there's also a little bit of like no, we're saving him yeah, I think so and I wonder if I wonder if they really were saving him for Shiratorizawa, probably so we'll see.
28:29
But we'll see if they, if they have to bring him out when they play Karasuno, because now the game is over and we know who Karasuno is going to be facing and it's Seijo again. And I really like Kagehina's faces. They're not even excited about the game anymore. They're not even excited about a Waisen musical hit anymore. They are so focused on the fact that they're about to play Seijo, like the team that beat them, like this was so like traumatic for them. It is that serious, guys? It really really is yes, okay, is, yes, okay.
em
28:56
But before we get into any of that stuff, we do have more date tech moments yes,, the old senpais greet their team and I love Futakuchi roasting the third years for having enough time to come watch them. He's always giving them shit for not having a life, which I agree. What are you still doing here?
rainbow
29:12
move on with your life clearly well, and I think that's I think that's why we had that moment at the beginning with the karasuno third years and the Datek third years, because the Datek third years clearly still want to be on that court. Yes, I don't know if they were like forced out necessarily. I think maybe just like that's how things work at this school, so they felt like they had to. But I think at the end of the day, if they really had a choice, I think they'd still be playing with their kohai.
em
29:34
Well, and what is sweet is, this burn kind of turns into a genuine invitation to well, if you have the time, then come and practice with us. And the one guy in the middle is like well, all right, and already starts to strip his clothes off, oh my God.
rainbow
29:45
And then in the dub it's so funny because then his little friend is like please don't take your clothes off, and it's like one of the best line reads in the show. I love it. Also, we've seen their jerseys, the whole episode, but I don't know why it wasn't until this moment I realized that Futakuchi is wearing the number two and Aone is wearing the number one. And have we talked about this before? Have we seen this before? Because Futakuchi is the captain, so usually he would be number one. So yeah, I just think it's interesting, because normally the captain would get number one and I wondered if maybe. So I kind of had like a cute like Futakuchi Aone moment where I was like did he give Aone the number one jersey because he's a middle blocker and blocking is date tech specialty and he felt like no, you're, you are the main pillar of our iron wall.
em
30:29
You should be number one. That must be, because there's nothing about him being like.
rainbow
30:33
There's nothing else about it really yeah, I think you know, I think I think Furudate does that. I think he like slips in these little things that like we don't really get an explanation for. They're just kind of open and maybe that's like, maybe that's the just how their team works like. I think you know what. I think that's how it was when the, the third years were there too. I think the, the captain was number two. Maybe that's just how things work on date tech. Maybe whoever like the, the third year middle blocker, whoever is the core of the iron wall, they get number one and then the captain is number two.
em
31:02
I like that. So then Kogane is passionately promising to not bring shame to the name of the iron wall, and he'll be able to block any ball and go against any opponent, big and strong. And then, of course, Aone, who only speaks when it's about Hinata, tells him opponents that are hard to beat are not always big and strong. And on cue, Hinata and his little brood looking like they just walked away from an explosion and didn't look back. Did you catch that they looked?
rainbow
31:29
so cool. Also, Hinata and Aone don't even like make eye contact.
em
31:33
It's it is like these unspoken, like volleyball rules, and it's just like yeah, it is interesting that they don't acknowledge each other and Aone, like, thinks to himself like I'll stop you next year, Hinata Shoyo I know I was like, I guess, because they didn't play together, but I was like I'm really shocked that they didn't stop to bow at each other like they usually do.
31:50
Yeah, and it's just. I think it's because like they're in wartime right now, like I think it's that fucking serious and I just think it's interesting how Hinata, who's such a like joke to his fellow first years, is like definitely their leader.
rainbow
32:11
Absolutely, yeah, he's, yeah, he absolutely is. You know, speaking of war, we get a war flashback to their last game against Seijo so dramatic.
em
32:14
But yeah, we're reflecting on the moment that they lost. And then we go back in real time and team is stretching in an extra gym and Yachi notes like is everyone on?
rainbow
32:24
edge. Yeah, she can sense the tension in the air. And then Kiyoko explains that you know, they played Seijo and they lost, and they gave their all.
em
32:33
You know, that's really the thing is. They gave everything to Seijo and they still lost.
rainbow
32:36
And then we get just a wonderful Yamaguchi-Yachi friendship moment. This, like whole exchange, is so hilarious.
em
32:43
Yes, he walks up to Yachi looking for stomach medicine because he's nervous. And I did say, can I be real? If I had to pick a straight ship for Yachi, it would be with Yamaguchi.
rainbow
32:52
It absolutely is. I was getting. I was like you know what? I totally see why people ship them. I think this, I think even more so than Hinata and Yachi.
em
32:59
I just feel like I can see it and like it's the way that, like because when she's first introduced he kind of thinks to himself, oh, she's cute, but he's never weird about it. And this whole like interaction, because you know he tells her that he's nervous and she gives this really cute advice about how when she's nervous, like saying it out loud- helps the dub.
rainbow
33:15
this is a wonderful dub moment. I think everyone should go and look this up because it really is. This is very much like a Haikyuu dub is my therapy moment, because she says if there's one thing I'm confident about, it's being nervous. And he's like, how does that work? And then she says so yeah. Then she says like just scream about it and it'll be okay. And she's like I feel like my nerves put my life in danger all the time.
em
33:45
So I looked up a bunch of tricks and stuff to help with it. And he's like they put you in danger. Yes, well, in the sub she says things like sporting events and tests and he's like tests. And then he tells her about how the last time they went up against them and he failed his jump float serve. And then she gets nervous on his behalf. She was like they put you in that situation. And then she starts to freak out and in her freaking out it distracts and everyone runs to her rescue and Kiyoko says maybe nerves are like a cold. You feel better when you give it to someone else. And Suga is like don't try and make this a rational thing.
rainbow
34:13
Yeah, he's like I don't know about all that. No, I do, I really love that moment. All that, no, I do, I really love that moment. The whole scene is hilarious. The banter is great. I said, yeah, if there's one thing the dub gets right, it's the comedy. I also want to say, like Yamaguchi is saying, like he says in the dub at least he says, if I hadn't fucked up that serve well, he doesn't say it exactly like that, obviously. He's like if I hadn't flubbed that serve, we might have won that game. And I'm like Yamaguchi, you don't put that on yourself, like you can't put that whole game on yourself. There was a lot of things going on there. That one serve was not the thing that lost them the game. It was, if anything, Hinata closing his eyes during their quick set that lost them that game. Okay, Kageyama, and believe me, Hinata knows that, yes, and then we get an entirely underrated Kageyama moment.
em
35:00
Very underrated kagehina moment. Very underrated kagehina moment. I love this moment. We have Kageyama quietly filing away at his nails. Hinata goes up to Kageyama and is like are you scared? And then immediately goes into defense mode like you are looking for a wrestle he wants to fight, he wants, he wants.
rainbow
35:14
He wants him to try to grab his hair and he wants to be able to grab his arm like he wants to.
em
35:18
He wants to play fight with him and I think you know when Kageyama is truly freaked out because he doesn't rise to that bait whatsoever he's like, yeah, I am freaked out yeah, no, I really love this moment, first of all because it's Hinata knowing that Kageyama, like I think he doesn't and I I do kind of wonder.
rainbow
35:34
I think there is a little bit of him like he wants to fight. But I think he also notices he's like because in the dub he says like you're in super panic mode, and I think he knows that Kageyama is panicking. He's like all right, let me get him out of this, let me get him back to his usual self. But like it's just the, the fear of Oikawa is so strong he just like continues to file his nails, which is clearly something he does to help calm himself down. And I have to go to AO3 right now. I know it's just really beautiful. And then they have the conversation about a team of six is stronger than one.
em
36:02
Yes, Kageyama quotes Iwa's wise words, and this is where we get the flashback of right after the controversial almost slap, where baby Kageyama is eating his little onigiri unbothered and listening to his volleyball parents argue and that's where he hears you, you know, it's the stronger six that win. And he says in the moment I was wondering why he was saying something so obvious. But he understands it now. But he even still says he's like you know, I don't compare to Oikawa as a setter, like one-on-one, and then Hinata is like maybe that's true, but we're Karasuno.
rainbow
36:33
Yeah, I really okay. So what I really love is so, in the dub, the way he breaks it down. He says like he's like I didn't understand, of course. A team of six strong players is going to be stronger than one, is going to be better than one strong person. He's like that's not what they were saying, that's not what he was saying. He was saying a team of six who's strong together. And he's saying and he kind of takes it back to again those words of Ushijima's that have been living in his head rent free that it's about a team of six who are all doing their best and no matter what team Oikawa is on, he always brings out the best and all of his spikers. And I can't do that. And in the dub, what Hinata says, he's like yeah, you know, maybe that's true, but maybe we're the exception oh, that's cute.
em
37:12
I feel like the sub line makes more sense for him to say but we're karasuno. Because I feel like he's saying to Kageyama I understood your story and I'm telling you well, we are the stronger six yes, that like we as a team as a team are stronger.
rainbow
37:24
Because, again, I think, because we call like Kageyama is still focused on Oikawa as the setter, bringing out the best in his spikers, and he's like, yeah, but we don't, we, as karasuno, we don't need you to bring out the best in us, because we are bringing out the best in ourselves and all of us are working together and I just think that in this moment, moment, Hinata, even when Kageyama isn't sure of himself, Hinata is sure that Kageyama can beat Oikawa.
37:45
He believes in him so much like he. Just he knows he's like I don't, he's like I don't give a fuck about how good Oikawa is. We're better, let's go bae, we got this.
em
37:57
It is just like Kagehina's love story is very like understated. Okay, you gotta pay attention.
rainbow
38:05
That's yeah, that's well, because it's. It's both. I think it's both. Because they have the big dramatic moments. They have the I'm here, together, we're invincible. But they also have these smaller moments like this. They also have the, the game isn't over yet, so I haven't lost. Like, they have these small moments and I like this. They also have the. The game isn't over yet, so I haven't lost. Like they have these small moments and I like this. And I was thinking last night as I was watching the episode about how, like, we're really seeing the Kagehina friendship grow here. Like this is not a moment I think we would have had in first year or in season one. They're still in first year, Right.
em
38:36
I also thought Kageyama's reaction to Hinata was a little interesting. He's like surprised by his words and then almost looks annoyed. But I think it's in the way that he gets annoyed when Hinata, you know, touches his heart, kind of thing.
rainbow
38:47
He's definitely having like this is giving me feelings that I don't understand and I don't like it. Now he probably wants to wrestle and he doesn't understand why I want to touch you.
em
38:59
Touch you, yeah, exactly,, okay so I think that and that's kind of the end of the episode. Then they get up yes, so then Daichi looks at the clock and says it's almost time and I feel the nerves. I was like I'm honestly glad I never was like a successful athlete in school because I would want to poop myself before every like important game.
rainbow
39:11
I would be Yachi for sure I would be freaking out.
em
39:14
Yeah, that's the end, so the rest of the season is gonna be against Seijoh I'm so fucking excited I'm.
rainbow
39:19
This is so like I. I love every game they play against Seijoh, but I think this one is this has so many good fucking moments, so many good iwaoi moments, just really good Seijoh moments. I'm really excited to get into mad dog and that kind of stuff. We really get to see a little bit more about him. I'm very excited.
39:36
And before we move on to manga versus anime, have we talked yet on this podcast about why Oikawa wears one white knee pad and one black knee pad? I don't think so. I don't think we have. I think a lot of people seem to think that the white knee pad is a knee brace. I don't think that's the case and I want to talk about it in the spoiler zone. I have a theory, but I have to talk about it in the spoiler zone. Ok, want to talk about it in the spoiler zone. I have a theory, but I have to talk about it in the spoiler zone. Okay, and I'm very excited. But yeah, I think it's very interesting because I noticed everybody else on Seijo they're all wearing black and Kage not Kage. Oikawa has one black and one white and I think I know why. I don't think it's a knee brace. I don't think the knee injury is canon, but I have an idea of what it is.
em
40:15
But I can't talk about it yet Wow, titillating for the spoiler zone aren't you, mm-hmm?
rainbow
40:19
Yeah, everybody can go ahead and listen this time, guys.
em
40:22
All right. Well, it's time for manga versus anime, and actually I don't have much to say about the actual manga chapters about this episode. There wasn't really anything noteworthy there for me, but in the manga, before we get into the chapters, there's chapter 125 and a half, which is a collab between Furo Date and the writer of Nisekoi. Apologies if I didn't say that quite right, it is a romance manga about fake dating, but it is, and I'm sure most fans will know about this, but I actually don't think I've ever seen it before. So that was a fun thing for me.
40:56
But it's where the four idiots so Tanaka, noya and Kagehina. They're playing against the characters from this other manga, and I know nothing about the other manga. There's plenty of references about it. I don't know if you guys know. Enjoy, but they're playing beach volleyball, which I thought was kind of interesting. You've probably seen the panel of where Hinata is pointing out the girls and Kageyama is just like not looking at all. and you also have Kageyama going on about how amazing the sand is and his face is so blushy that Hinata tells him people think he's a freak oh, I love that's really interesting.
rainbow
41:28
You should, you should go check it out. I definitely want to read that. I think we should also talk about that a little bit in the spoiler zone yes, we definitely will.
em
41:34
And then this is just also followed up by a bonus story. that's basically advertising these v-ball cards, which is a card playing game. I found the originals on ebay, if you're interested. I love that. So, yeah, that's that's all I got from manga versus anime. Now to rainbow with the character spotlight.
rainbow
41:51
Hang on real quick about the volleyball cards.
em
41:53
Are they like real volleyball players, like like no, no, so it's, it's haikyuu players, and I think the idea is you can play like a strategy volleyball game with the cards.
rainbow
42:01
Oh, like a Pokemon or a Yu-Gi-Oh type thing.
em
42:03
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
rainbow
42:04
Oh, that's so interesting. I've probably seen references to those online.
em
42:09
Maybe. Yeah, yeah, I've just seen a lot of people from South Korea are selling them on eBay.
rainbow
42:14
Interesting. Okay, all right. Yeah, moving on to the character spotlight, it was so funny, before I started watching the episode to do my homework. I asked him because she had already watched the episode. I was like, hey, who should we do for the character spotlight? I can't think of anyone. And she was like, just start watching the episode, you'll figure it out.
em
42:31
And then Kogane showed up and I was like, oh, I know who we're doing that's so funny too, because, as I was like getting to this, I was like, oh, we never actually ended up talking about it, but I'm glad we had that silent understanding.
rainbow
42:42
Yeah, it's like well, clearly, who else would I talk about? What am I going to wait? Am I going to wait to talk about Kogane? Yeah, really, who am I going to cover the date tech coach, anyway. So his full family name is Kogane Koganegawa, right, but they just shorten it to Kogane , to the point where I actually forgot that that was a nickname. I just thought his last name was Kogane , but it's Koganegawa kanji.
43:04
I have a note about his personality from the wiki quote Kogane gawa is very energetic and enthusiastic, but often lacks the ability to think carefully about his actions. Despite being rather simple minded, he's also shown to be determined to improve his abilities and support his team as their setter and with his height, but tends to focus on improving the wrong areas. He is friendly towards others. I love that. That's like just a single line. It's like oh yeah, he's also nice, he's a puppy, he's a, but yeah, he's just a cute little puppy,.
43:31
And then we have his family name,, his meanings. His family name Koganegawa means golden river, and then his given name, kanji, is transmural arrival, and I was like what does transmural mean? Because I wasn't quite sure. I like mural. It made me think it must have something to do with a wall because of transmural. So I looked it up and the definition it's actually a medical term. It means existing or occurring across the entire wall of an organ or blood vessel, which I thought was very appropriate for the Iron Wall. Like he is the completion of the new Iron Wall and I think that makes a lot of sense. So I thought that was very interesting.
44:07
And then Golden River.
em
44:08
I don't know he has blonde hair, and I'm so sorry but I am going to make a piss joke here. There's a part in the Wicked book where I guess it was like a myth that some god or lady or something peed so much that it became a river. Yeah, I think that's probably.
rainbow
44:21
Lurlan or.
em
44:23
Lurlaini.
rainbow
44:24
Yeah, that sounds right.
44:25
I'm currently rereading the Wicked book and that book is horny and freaky and loves piss and this is a golden river. Okay, moving on to his character sheet, his is very cute. He's like very. He's standing in a very like yeah, I'm going to do this position and his like parameters are like between his legs. It's very funny. So he goes to Date Technical High School.
44:48
He is a first year in class one. His position is setter. His height is 191.5 centimeters, which comes out to about 6'3". So this boy is fucking tall and I think sometimes I just don't like I don't always pay attention to how tall they actually are, because I feel like so often they're on teams with other tall people and I'm like, yeah, they're all just tall and it's like, no, 6'3 is fucking tall. His birthday is July 9th, so he is a Cancer. Okay, very emotional. I see that for him, his favorite food is katsudon and his current worry is he can't pull off dump shots in a way that looks cool. Buddy, we know, yeah, we saw it. You tried it too many times. and onto his ability parameters, his technique and strategy both ones, yep, we saw that today. But his speed, his jumping and stamina are all fours and his power is a five, which again is something we see when he pulls off that setter dump. That is not a feint but is a full on dump onto the other side.
em
45:43
Thanks, Kogane , we'll see you later. Yes, we will, can't?
rainbow
45:46
wait to see you, you little baby chick.
em
45:49
All right, it's time for the world's favorite game. It's who in Haikyuu? This week's scenario was brought to us by LawZam. What kind of superpower would they have? Today we'll be talking about Hinata Kageyama, Aone Futakuchi, Oikawa Iwaizumi Kogane and anyone else that we want baby. It's our show and not yours. Hinata is giving me like flash. I feel like he'd be fast or like jump really high. It would certainly be a physical thing.
rainbow
46:16
Yeah, he's leaping buildings in a single bound or he's running as quickly as possible.
em
46:22
Yes, yeah, Kageyama, I see more of like a mind thing Interesting.
rainbow
46:27
Well.
em
46:27
I think, I think of, and we haven't really seen this yet. We'll see this in later seasons. But he does this like mind palace thing with the court sometimes.
rainbow
46:34
I do see that I was thinking something to do with like shadows or like invisibility. I could see that for him, like maybe he has like darkness. I'm thinking for those of you who know DC Shade, who is a character who can, like take the light out. That's very Megumi coded.

46:48
Ooh, and that makes sense. Speaking of invisibility, I think that would be a good one for Kiyoko. She's really giving the invisible girl from.
rainbow
46:56
The Incredibles, oh my God. She, the invisible girl from the incredibles, she, oh my god, she is giving violet. Yeah, you're absolutely right. Yes, this isn't even incredibles, but every time I say the name violet, I just think violet, you're turning violet. Violet, you're turning violet. Violet, Aone is giving. Well, he's giving from the fantastic four.
em
47:14
the rock guy I was gonna say he's definitely a dude made of stone or something. Yeah, absolutely Futakuchi. I think he'd be like he's giving like one of the like quote-unquote bad guys from soup. What was that fucking disney movie? The hero high school yes sky high sky high, like I think he would be some sort of like like the stretchy guy.
rainbow
47:37
Yeah he's also giving like gambit from mark, from x-men, that like I see him being kind of like a, like he's a real smooth talker and he's doing something, like he's doing something quick with his hands. Yeah, you know he's. He's very sly, Oikawa. Oikawa is giving me like I can like manipulate you with he. He's giving like Allison from Umbrella Academy where, like whatever he says like becomes true, like he will tell you to do something and you do it. Oh interesting.
em
48:06
That's also like the bad guy's powers from Jessica Jones.
rainbow
48:10
Oh yeah, I never watched that, but yeah, that's the David Tennant yeah.
em
48:13
David Tennant's character. He can like control people. And then there's also Shinzo from my Hero, who can kind of like mind control people. Yeah, I definitely I was on the same exact wavelength as you with that.
rainbow
48:23
Okay, oh, Iwaizumi is giving super strength.
em
48:26
Do you want to get married?
rainbow
We basically already are, but yes, agreed. And then Kogane,
em
Kogane is giving. He's giving. What's the guy? Is it Pickleman? What's the guy, Is it Pickleman? What's the guy from Harley?
rainbow
48:42
Oh, Kite man. You're thinking of Kite man? He's Kite man. Or are you thinking of the Condiment King?
em
48:46
I think I'm thinking of all.
rainbow
48:47
Yeah, just like a really stupid Polka Dot man. Yeah, anyway, if anyone has seen the Batman Lego movie, the Joker mentions like every single like silly batman villain in existence. Calendar man is another one, by the way, and I love that moment because like joker says that and the guy's like are all of those real? And he's like probably worth a google? And I did google it and they are all real. That's so crazy. also more kids media should tell people to fact check anyway. That should be baked in it's like. Maybe you should fact check this instead of just believing it because you saw it on tv. Kaganeane is definitely giving Kite man, for sure, and if you haven't watched Harley Quinn on Max, I don't know what you're doing with your life. It's amazing. Canon gay Anybody else I'm thinking like Kinma is giving like you know something with electronics. He can like control electronics.
em
49:34
He could control electricity, electricity there we go, that's also a power in my hero,, and then a lot of things. Oh yeah, and I was also thinking Yachi would be. I could see her being kind of like a glimmer, where she just shoots out glimmery things yes, oh my, no, I love that for her Kuroo is giving sorry glimmer from shira. For those who don't know, you should check that show out Kuroo is giving shapeshifter.
rainbow
49:58
I think he can shapeshift into a panther. Oh my god, yeah, yeah he'd be very cool, Bokuto can fly.
em
50:04
Bokuto can absolutely fly Akaashi Akaashi's like a I feel like a tech type of person I agree.
rainbow
50:11
Yeah, he's on like the same same wavelength as Kenma. Yeah, he's kind of giving. If we're gonna do to do like a Hellboy AU, he would be Abraham. He'd be Abe the blue guy, the water guy,
em
sure.
rainbow
You don't know Hellboy as much as I do, it's okay.
em
50:25
I did see the first one in theaters, for some reason as a child. I went with a random friend that I don't talk to anymore
rainbow
50:28
We had it on DVD and I watched it a lot, probably because I thought the girl was really hot and I was gay and I didn't know it On that note.
em
50:40
Do you have any other ones?
rainbow
50:42
Nothing is coming to mind. No, I'm good. Does anyone control the weather? Which one of them would it be? If any of them, maybe that's Akaashi. Yeah, I could, oh, no, I could see that being Bokuto. That would be interesting if it's Bokuto.
em
50:58
With his emotions.
rainbow
50:59
Yeah, yeah, I could. Oh no, I could see that being Bokuto. That would be interesting. If it's Bokuto With his emotions, yeah, the weather changes on his mood, like when he gets all sad and depressy. It's all rainy outside.
em
51:05

rainbow
51:24
All right, and now you go through a door. It's got an S and a Z.
em
51:31
It's the spoiler zone. What do you got for us, babe?
rainbow
51:35
All right, so you know. The name of this episode is the date tech wall will be can be rebuilt again and again, and that is absolutely true. we find out in the manga that date tech beats karasuno at next year's inner highs. and I think they end up going to. Do they go to national? Do they go to like the national?
em
51:52
I thought date tech like beat them at a national level or something
rainbow
51:52
well, no, they wouldn't, because they they beat them at the prefectural level because they're both from Miyagi and I just know that there's. I know there's a fic out there about Atsumu being like obsessed with Hinata's like career, like excited to beat Karasuno at the next game, like he because he made that declaration to them like we're gonna beat you at the inner high, and then he looks like a complete fool because they don't even show up. But there's like a great like scene where they like go up to like see who's playing and he's all like excited to see karasuno and he goes what the heck is a date tech?
em
52:25
I love tha that’st funny.
rainbow
52:26
I want to talk about Oikawa wearing one white knee pad okay, first, and a black one. So we find out through a flashback during the brazil arc, that Oikawa and Iwaizumi went to a game with the Argentina players and he got a white knee pad signed by the player from Argentina who later becomes his like mentor type guy, and it's a white knee pad and so I think he and I don't think it's the same one, because I think there's like even a thing about like that his mom accidentally washed it and he's all upset about it. But I think that's kind of like for him like it's an honor thing, like it's to honor this Argentina player and I think maybe to remind him of his goals and I don't know, because I think we see that throughout the show. I don't think it starts after a certain point, but we do know that at some point he has a conversation with that guy from Argentina where that guy like kind of tells him, like if you think that you're just not born with talent and you can't do it, then you should give up, like because you're you're never going to do it, but like you have to believe that if you work hard enough, like you will get to that level and that's kind of like, and I think that that conversation happens before this match and so I think we see, I think that's why Oikawa is so like confident and so like. I think he seems very level-headed in this and I think that. So I think that's where it comes from. I think like he wears that white knee pad as a reminder to himself and it's just a way to like kind of honor like that, like dream or goal that he has. So I don't think it's a knee brace, I don't think he has like a knee injury. I think Oikawa does seem like the kind of person who would work himself so hard that he would get injured.
53:53
I just don't think that's necessarily supported in the text. I think that makes sense as a headcanon. I've seen it in a lot of fics. I think it's a great way to create angst. I have plans to use something like that in a future fic, but I think canonically, I think that's what the text is telling us and I think that's. It's just Furu Date. It's just so impressive because we don't find that out until the Brazil arc, but it's always. There's always leaving these little easter eggs, these little things for us, to see, and I just think it's amazing. And then there was something else that I said we should talk about in a superhero thing or no?
em
54:29
no, no, the beach volleyball thing oh, the beach volleyball thing.
rainbow
54:32
Yeah, we have kagama talking about how cool the sand is, and then Hinata goes to play beach volleyball and then, during the jack adler's match, we see Kageyama so mad about sand. He's like stupid sand because sand made Hinata stronger, and it's like you're not actually mad about that. and again and I just kind of wanted to mention so I kind of referenced this earlier that the reason Kageyama is so critical of Hinata specifically is because Hinata is someone better and he's. I need you to be that person for me now, but Hinata needs time. Just be patient, Kageyama, and you know what he isn't. It totally pays off. Yes, anyway, they're soulmates. They're going to be together forever and that's all I have. All right, thank you for that analysis, rainbow. You're welcome.
em
55:25
Did you have anything to add? Do you have any thoughts?
rainbow
55:26
about the Oikawa knee pad thing. I mean I I just knew that that was a popular like fan and thing with his knee, but I like your take a lot, yeah, I just I think I like, and again, it's not that I don't like the knee thing, I just don't think it's as supported by the text. I think this idea I think is, and again, if anyone has if you contradict that, if you have other ideas, please write. You know, we love to hear your thoughts on it. I'm not saying that anyone is wrong and I'm right. That's just my view of it, my interpretation.
em
55:45
Yeah, we just like to talk about. We're not arguing about canon and fanon ideas, it's just fun to talk about like different interpretations of things.
rainbow
55:53
Yeah, absolutely, and I think it invites people to share their own interpretations, and we love to hear that.
em
55:58
All right, well, that's it for this episode.
rainbow
56:03
Until next week, y'all fly high. I'm going to do that every episode now.
