hello everyone and welcome to fly a queer haikyuu podcast I'm rainbow they she
em
00:12
and I'm em, and today we're talking about season 2, episode 20, wiping out, I almost said, notes I thought about that when I told you to say the episode number and title For context, folks, at the top of our notes page we have the season two, episode 20, and then the title. But we also have season two, episode 20 notes. So I almost read that. But hey, we got there. We got there eventually, and this is coming out January 6th. Where were you?
rainbow
00:51
Where is the Law Order episode about the Capitol?
em
00:54
I have to imagine it's out there. We just don't know about it because we only watch SVU.
rainbow
00:58
Well, no, I'm saying there should be a Law Order SVU episode about it, but I don't think one has come out yet, and I think that's because that show is made by a bunch of Copag episode about it. But I don't think one has come out yet, and I think that's because that show is made by a bunch of.
em
01:07
Copaganda.
rainbow
01:08
Yeah, it's copaganda.
em
01:09
All right, before we get into it, we have just a little bit of chit chat, because I had some ideas this morning and I wanted to pitch it to you folks at home because you're just as part of this as we are. So I think we may have, like, mentioned a little bit but bit but Rainbow, and I do indulge in the devil's lettuce. I guess you could say what are the kids saying?
rainbow
01:31
The Mary Jane the bud the flower.
em
01:34
I had two episode ideas for you guys and I wanted to know what you thought, and they can maybe be special episodes, not an episode recap, one like a normal one, but I had two, and one was we start an episode with eating a gummy and see how far we make it until we can't form sentences anymore and slash or like drunk history instead. High future. No, I was thinking about possibly we can talk about one of our favorite manga chapters that we haven't, that hasn't been animated yet, while being really stoned, and just try and recap that chapter as best as possible and see how that goes. That might be better visually now that I'm thinking about it, but I don't know. We're throwing ideas around and I just want to. What do you guys think? Are you into it? Write in, let us know.
rainbow
02:23
Yeah, we're curious Is there another podcast you know of that has done something fun like that, and you know? If so, give us some ideas.
em
02:31
Excuse me, Are you trying to knit right now? No, you're. No, I'm not. So Rainbow said to me I think it was yesterday mentioned like knitting while we were doing the podcast and I said absolutely not, because the mic is going to pick up the clickety clackety of the needles. Well, we'll see how it goes. Yeah, we'll see if this episode is usable.
rainbow
03:01
Listen, we're recording this before Christmas and I have two days left and I have to make three more of these. Leave me alone. I'm just Santa's elf working away in the workshop.
em
03:15
A mother's work is never done, never.
rainbow
03:17
Okay, yeah, so that's. I think that's it for chit chat. I love those ideas, I think it'll be fun, but we want to hear if you all would be interested, because there's no point in doing it if nobody wants to listen to it. Exactly, um, but yeah, I don't think we have anything for housekeeping. Are we ready to get into this?
em
03:33
episode. Yeah, without further ado. Um knitting grandmother, would you like to get us into our recap?
rainbow
03:39
yes, I would will you count me down, father? Three, three, two, one. The semifinals are upon us, and it's Karasuno versus Abajosai. After some face-offs between various players, the game begins. Karasuno shows off just how much they've improved since the last time the two teams played, and Seijo proves they're still capable of keeping up with the Crows when it gets down to set point. With Karasuno in the lead, the Seijo coaches decide to throw a wrench into their plans and bring out a new player. Will this mad dog be able to shake things up enough for Seijo to defeat Karasuno once more, or will the crows fly into the prefectural finals?
em
04:15
Baby, we're getting into it. My notes have a lot of exclamation points. In this episode there's a lot going on.
rainbow
04:21
There's also a lot of like just me doing a play-by-play of what happened in this volleyball game, so prepare for that.
em
04:28
No, the way that I'm probably going to edit in some like sport casting music, because this is going to feel very like and it goes to this one and he pumps it and he gets it and it's in it's very much going to be that episode, that it's very much going to be that energy.
rainbow
04:42
I think it's gonna, that's going to be quite a few of these episodes for the rest of season two, I think, because we're just we're in this game now.
em
04:50
This is, I have to say, I think this might still be like well, maybe not all of manga, but it is like top three favorite games. This is a game that has been building up to for now two seasons.
rainbow
05:00
Yeah, and it's they really like. Do not let you forget that Karasuno lost the last time they played Seijo, and they want to. It haunts the narrative, it haunts every single person, kagehina most of all, but the rest of Karasuno as well.
em
05:25
And right off the bat, we have the Oikage moment that I have seen in every single Wicked edit in TikTok thus far, which is Oikawa and Kageyama fighting over the volleyball.
rainbow
05:31
It's so funny Like Oikawa is so immature when Kageyama is involved, it really brings him back to his middle school self in the worst possible ways.
em
05:41
Yeah, he really brings out like the mean older brother energy.
rainbow
05:44
Yes, yeah, and I love that. Okay, so I think we have two interpretations of what happens, because Suga and Hinata are watching this and I think that Hinata is nervous and wants to throw up watching this. Oh, okay, and you're no mean made it seem like you think Hinata is laughing.
em
06:02
I was getting. Hinata was laughing but trying to hide it behind his hand because he didn't want Kageyama to beat him up for laughing.
rainbow
06:08
Oh no, I was getting that. Watching that Hinata, watching his boyfriend face off against their greatest rival, was making him nervous. On Kageyama's behalf.
em
06:18
That's funny. No, I was only getting laughter.
rainbow
06:21
That's so interesting. Okay, I wonder if it's a sub versus dub thing of the dub, because I felt like I got like a like a Hinato, like old noise in there. Oh yeah, it was more like oh yeah. Okay, I think they're just two different interpretations. There you go. This is why we have sub versus dub. Yes, okay and so. And we have Karasuno does seem like hype to play Seijo again. I feel like some of the nerves from the end of the last episode have kind of faded away and now they're just like ready to get into it. But over on the Seijo side we have Yahaba and Kindaichi talking about Karasuno's new girl manager.
em
06:55
This is such a I feel like I get a weird insight into the male psyche that I didn't want, because Kindaichi says why do I feel frustrated right now? And I sexual frustration, but it's just like.
rainbow
07:06
That's such an odd, like I don't know and that's like a thing that we see all the time is like when another team has like cute girl managers, it's like a reason to hate that team it brings out an anger, and I think in this essay I will about sexual violence.
em
07:22
I do want to also say that this Yahabaaba's face, so you know they're talking about how cute Yachi is and so Yahaba throws the ball over towards Yachi so he has an excuse to run over and as he's running over, it is the biggest jump scare, this little like detailed face, and he's like but then we get like almost a reward for having to watch this because I forgot this happened, because then a ball goes flying towards Yachi's face and who other than Kiyoko stops it like a badass?
rainbow
07:57
She's such a badass. First of all, yohaba's face makes me so uncomfortable. That entire moment is so uncomfortable. It is the worst thing that happens and one of the worst things that happens in the show. But then, yeah, Kiyoko comes in and she is like talk about guardian deity of karasuno. She is like she like hits that ball out of the way. She looks fierce and I think she knows Yahaba is coming after yachi and is like bitch, stay the fuck away. Yes, my is my girl.
em
08:25
It's very, oh, it's just so cool. And then I actually really appreciate the Tanaka moment too, because then he comes up and brings the ball to Yahaba and is like, here you go, buddy, nice, try, kind of thing. And I'm like, yeah, this is the teamwork, this is the Tanakao. Wait, yeah, that's right.
rainbow
08:45
This is the kiyo interactions that I like to see. That is what I'm talking about. I do I I always forget. I remember the Kiyoko part because it's badass, but I do forget tanaka's little like, and he's like, he's almost smug about it, where he's like, yeah, we have cool girl managers and you can't talk to them, so get the fuck out of here. And it's because it's not in like a weird, like I need to protect Kiyoko kind of way, because Kiyoko has just proven that she can handle it well, it very much felt like the girls gathering him up.
em
09:12
You know, everyone felt like they were on the same team.
rainbow
09:15
Yeah, yeah, it's I. Just I do want to like touch on it briefly, of just this idea that, like a boys team having pretty girl managers, it's like the girls are an accessory for the boys and it's something to show off yeah, it's like it's. It is objectifying girls and women in a way that I do not feel comfortable with, and I wish that is like the one thing about Haikyuu that I would like for us to get rid of.
em
09:39
Well, with you can just tell how normal and almost expected this behavior is. I think because it almost feels like forced in a little bit with Haikyuu, but I think that's just because it's just so like. That's just what's expected.
rainbow
09:51
I don't know, yeah it's. It's like watching like a movie from the early 2000s and hearing like the r-word or the f-slur, where you're just like, oh yeah, that's right, this is just a thing that we did. Oh, also, I do. I do want to say about the Tanaka-Kiyoko thing. It's giving that scene in book two of Avatar, the Last Airbender, when they're trying to find a earthbending teacher for Aang and Katara, goes and beats up those two Earth Kingdom boys to get information out of them and then, as they're walking out tanaka's going or not, uh, saka's going water tribe out, like that's what that moment is giving yes, that is a one-to-one scene comparison, actually like, actually, I need like that, I need a side-by-side of those two scenes happening.
10:41
Make a note of that. I might do it at it. It's in the notes, you'll see it. Um, yeah, so that's. That's the last thing I have to say about that scene, because then we get another preview of mad dog yeah, I wrote shoulder check enter mad dogs.
em
10:55
I'm pretty sure he shoulder checks kandaiji or something he's so aggressive he shoulder checks Yahaba oh right, right, yep, that's true, because that's how we kind of segue into him.
rainbow
11:04
Yes, yeah, and then, um, and, and I think kineta notices him and, like you know of course, goes to Kageyama and is like hey, do you recognize that guy? Did he play last time? Because of course I always have to gossip about the other team together, I know I love it, um, but then we get into the game, right, we get into Daichi and Daichi facing off. This is is like their biggest shipping moment, in my opinion.
em
11:25
Well, and I wrote that like. This feels like the overall one of the more respectful interactions that Oikawa has with the captains, but I'll get into that in a second. But yeah, so Oikawa comments that Daichi looks like he's gotten older and Daichi trauma dumps the past four months of abuse from Kuro and Bokuto and we have them, like you know, coming up in the background.
rainbow
11:45
I love it. And Bokuto looks so scary because it's like his owl eyes coming across the screen first and he's like, hey, hey, hey, he's like bobbing his head like in the creepy way that owls do.
em
11:55
And Oikawa's, just like I don't know what you're talking about, but it sounds good.
rainbow
12:06
I agree that I think this is one of the most respectful exchanges we see between Oikawa and, like any other player, I think, like as much of a bitch as Oikawa is, I think he has genuine respect for Daichi as a player and as a captain, and I think we see that in this. And I think, like because Oikawa knows, like hey, as much as I think we are going to win, I know Karasuno is about to put up a good fight yes, Well, I think we are going to win.
em
12:25
I know Karasuno is about to put up a good fight. Yes, well, I think it says a lot about Daichi as a captain. Like I feel like he's not like a Bokudo or a Futakuchi, where, like you almost want to rile him up. Like there's something about Daichi I feel that really kind of commands, respect, he's not goofing around.
rainbow
12:39
I agree. I think we see that. We see that with the karasuno players, but we also see that with other players and other captains this game is summing up the season.
12:50
It like everything that they've been working towards, all the abuse they've gone through with the b foes yes, um, it's all been leading up to this finale game yes, and I want to talk briefly about because Daichi and Daichi are doing the captain handshake but they're also doing the coin flip to see which team is going to receive first. And I want to talk a little bit about the cute little volleyball coin that they use, because it's literally like it is a coin. I feel like in the dub at least, you hear it like make a sound on the ground, so it sounds like a real coin, but on one side is a little volleyball and then on the other side it has FIVB, and I recognized that and so I looked it up and it is the Federation Internationale de Volleyball, or the International Volleyball Federation, which was founded in Paris, france, in 1947. And currently the membership includes 222 national associations.
13:44
Interesting, so I thought that was yeah, I thought that was cool because I was like, oh yeah, like what is that little thing? Like you just assume it's some sort of volleyball thing.
em
13:51
Yeah, I'm sure that they. It's like a specific volleyball coin flip thing.
rainbow
13:55
Yeah, that they and I. Just I was like do they do that? Do they have those little coins everywhere? Like if we went to like a volleyball game here at like our local college, would they be flipping a volleyball?
em
14:05
coin. We should look. And I was gonna say, when we do eventually one day go to the sendai gym, the haikyuu sendai gym, we will look. Yes for them also.
rainbow
14:13
I just I do want one of these little volleyball coins.
em
14:15
I think they're really adorable, it's interesting you're bringing attention to this moment in particular because this is the one note I have for manga versus anime.
rainbow
14:23
And I'll save it for then, oh, okay, so anyway. So we get the coin flip and Karasuno gets to choose and they decide to receive first, and I love how Kanti, Daichi and Oikawa are right at the end there.
em
14:35
And I will say I didn't really think about it in that moment. But then I was like wow, that's actually a bold choice when you're going up against server king Daichi, like I would think, serve first.
rainbow
14:45
I had that thought too, because they know they're gonna come, they're gonna start out with Daichi serving as they do. Um, I think that's usually the what, what seijo does, and I think we see that with karasuno too. I think they usually have Kageyama serve first, because he has the strongest serve, yeah, and so I think for Daichi he's like's, like, yeah, we're not afraid of your little serve bitch, come at me, bro.
em
15:13
I have to say this is the long necks lineup, like I think people have talked about the Haikyuu necks before, but this is just one of these shots where their necks are just really intensely drawn for some reason, like, and I just noticed that they're long, they're shaded and those apples are prominent.
rainbow
15:26
I did not. I have never noticed the next thing. Yeah, please do next time. But yeah, I think then we get like a little moment of, like Kagehina and Oikawa facing off specifically Like this is their rival now.
em
15:43
Exactly. Yeah, Hinata says to Kageyama we're going to win and we have that visual and of course it is the teams versus each other, but to them it feels like you know it's them and then everybody else.
rainbow
15:56
I think we get just a little bit of info from the crowds, and this is when we officially learn that this is the semifinal match.
em
16:04
Yes, true, which, like we know, but it just hasn't been. But yeah, this is it. Like, whoever wins, this goes against Shira Torzawa.
rainbow
16:11
Yes, and I think Oikawa even kind of says that when he's having his little fucking playground fight with Kageyama at the beginning, where he's like I'm the only one who should be going up against Ushiwaka, like he's so ridiculous.
em
16:24
The Seijo coach and Oikawa both acknowledge that Karasuno is a formidable opponent. Everyone is surprised at Oikawa's honesty, but he says he learned last time to take them seriously. I mean, fuck, the game was close. You know they did lose and of course they focus on how they lost, but they went up into the 30s Like they just won.
rainbow
16:42
And throughout this game game we see more and more people showing up to watch, and I think people remember that game from the inner high and they're like, oh shit, it's Seijo versus Karasuno again. I wonder if this is going to be another tough match, and so I think they're really kind of drawing in a crowd the buzz is.
em
16:59
I feel like this is really where the buzz starts to take off for Karasuno absolutely um.
rainbow
17:03
And then we see Oikawa shaking out his little wrists before the game I think he does that every time, which is so cute, I love it. And he's about to do that thing that he did before the last game, where he's like, all right, everybody, let's go out and do it and like make sure to make me proud, kind of thing. But before he can do that, oiz in me walks like all the all the guys are just like we trust you, captain, and it's very cute. But then, of course, all the third years just know exactly how to humble him, because they're like if you fuck up this first serve, you're buying us ramen.
em
17:35
And they each like put in their little order with them. I do love how the third years keep him humbled. Yes, and then we have Takaru coaching our boys. And Takeru why did I write Takeru? I?
rainbow
17:48
don't know. That's the kid from the last that is, that's the Wakutani kid what's his name?
em
17:55
are you talking about? What's kakita takita?
rainbow
18:01
not in letters yeah, not in forgetting Takeda's name.
em
18:05
Live on air, guys I don't think I'm okay and that's the truth. So tak Takeda coaches our boys and in these moments sometimes I just close my eyes and I imagine a gentle Levi from Attack on Titan in another life who got to lead a team that wouldn't end up in a Titan's mouth. But that's just a side point.
rainbow
18:25
My note here is that Takeda is coming at them with the poetry and then Ukai comes in to talk tactics.
18:38
He's like they're going to be tough for you, as any team that is calm and collected and deals with Karasuno one play at a time. So the game begins and the third years are still just like Szechuan style soy sauce, Like they're like shouting out what kind of ramen they want. But I think it's. Hanamaki says to himself. He's just like. We know you're about to ruin our dinner plans. We know that you're going to get this serve over the net and it is an intense serve. We get to see another amazing Oikawa serve, but does he land it in Karasuno's court? No, Daichi gets it. Bitch, yeah. And it's another like captain versus captain moment where they glare at each other triumphantly yeah yeah Daichi was like oh, damn it.
em
19:14
And Daichi's like, yeah, that's right but yeah, right away they're pulling out all the stops. Kageyama is the first to save it and they're like, oh, Kageyama had to touch it first. That's gonna set up the set. But no worries, because here comes Noya with his little jumpy set and he sets it to Asahi and they get the first point in and they're more surprised than anybody else. But I love that.
rainbow
19:33
Our first point in this game is an Asanoia point yeah, and I really feel like almost every time we see Noya set the ball, it is to Daichi or it is to Asahi. Who else?
em
19:42
would it be to?
rainbow
19:43
because, furudate, I see what you're doing, I know, I know you want us to ship AsaNoya and we do yeah, Noya is definitely Asahi's biggest fan, like he.
em
19:53
You know, inside he's like yeah, Hinata's quick is something else, but still Asahi for me yeah, yeah, he's like.
rainbow
19:58
He's like our team would be falling apart without Asahi. Listen, if Hinata quit, Noya would still be on that team. It's only Asahi he's quitting, for Kageyama gets that save because Hinata loses a joust between him and kanDaichi um at the very beginning. So after Asahi gets that spike and everyone on the sidelines is freaking out, except for tsukki shima who just says like the blandest, nice kill, yeah no tsukki will never show an emotion if he can help it and then we have Kageyama is up to serve next. Oh wait Before.
em
20:29
Oh, ok, right, but literally right before there's just a shot of, there must be a shot of Mad Dog, because I write, but so much like Gaara, bloodlust waits in the corner. It's the eyeliner. That's the eyeliner Makes me think of Gaara, I agree. And the anger.
rainbow
20:46
Yeah, because he's still on the sidelines. The anger, yeah, because he's still on the sidelines, right. So so but yeah, so Kageyama goes to serve. Kageyama goes to serve, and I think he's probably still a little bit in his head about playing against dDaichi, because he hits.
em
20:58
It's a hard serve, but it just goes out certainly in his head, but also I think, yeah, I think he is just going for these hard serves and they're harder to control the harder you hit them. So, if anything, I'm like know what. I think he really tried to go for it and it's just. It was just out, yeah.
21:15
So then I think it's a Waizumi who serves next, yes, and Daichi thinks to himself like I'm sure his is also strong and it is Asahi just saves it and it goes long. But Kageyama is able to, and it kind of reminds me of when Kogane, with his height, just taps the ball in a serve to. He gets it to Tanaka, and Tanaka gets it through, and then we have Tanaka's older sister being embarrassing in the sidelines.
rainbow
21:39
I love Saeko nee-san so much she's like yeah, that's my brother. And even Tanaka, who's usually the most intense, is like chill out, chill out.
em
21:52
Calm down, calm down, sis, sis. That's embarrassing, it's very sweet. And then we, of course, we have greedy. Little Hinata is getting thirsty for that ball and we've maybe got like two or three points at this point, but he's already getting antsy.
rainbow
22:01
Yes, but before uh, we get uh to see Hina to do anything. We get to see Tsukishima show a little bit of what he's made of. We see him tracking that ball. I love getting to see like you can really see the gears working in Tsukishima's mind when he's blocking and like I think that's so impressive because it's an animated TV show. But I just love getting to see like you can see he's thinking about it and he's going and he blocks and then he's just like has no feelings whatsoever about it. He's like, yeah, I just blocked the ball.
em
22:30
Whatever, he's too cool to look at the explosion behind him. So now they're six to five, neck and neck for this whole beginning of the game, and everyone, including Hinata, is ready for him to get a quick.
rainbow
22:40
Stop edging us. I have the note that Hinata is itching to Sojo the new and improved. Freak quick and heal the sins of their past.
em
22:51
Yes, improved, freak, quick and heal the sins of their past. Yes, but he's too eager and he gets blocked again, starts to have war flashbacks, but tsuki's able to save it and Kageyama notices that Hinata is so worked up that he's not seeing these blocks coming, so he gives him a real hard kick in the ass to snap him out of it.
rainbow
23:03
It's so funny he's being so extra about it. Like he's like telling, he's like he didn't come the hell down and even tanaka is like take a chill. It Like he's like telling, he's like Hinata, calm the hell down, and even Tanaka is like take a chill pill, dude.
em
23:14
Well, because he's like Kageyama is like tripping over his words, like calm down, dumbass, yes, and they're like yeah, you too, buddy. And Hinata thinks to himself damn it, he kicked me for real. Which implies a lot of play fighting, that's all I'll say there. Yes, uh, but it, he, it works. Because then Hinata runs up for another spike. Uh, the senpai are counting on you. I think I said this because we have like all the senpais thinking about that last game again, like it's so much emphasis on like are we gonna get around the block that stopped us the last time?
rainbow
23:44
well, and again. This is what the entire season two has been about. It starts with Hinata wanting to change the quick, having to fight for that, and the reason he wants to change the quick is because of how they lost to Seijo in the last game. And this is our. We need to see Hinata overcome Seijo's blockers with the free quick so that the team can feel confident that they can win, Because if they can't get through with the freak quick, then I feel like it's like it feels like it's lost you know, so before Hinata does his freak quick, in the dub there is a line where I think it's where he's thinking to himself like he really kicked me.
24:24
In the dub he says, freaking Kageyama, my butt really hurts. Pause. Everyone wants Hinata's quick to succeed, to rewrite their last loss. And because Hinata is able to fight on his own now he manages to get a point in. He's going up against a blocker but he says oh no, no, no, my eyes are open, I can see different paths. And he hits that ball and it gets in and everyone's excited and we get a Kage Hina high five, which I love so much.
em
24:51
And I said, hey, let's take a moment, because the game they lost against Seijo is the whole reason Hinata felt like they needed to improve in the first place. It's what led to them learning this new, quick and baby. It worked. And so, as they say, like we are at the starting line, we are here for real yes, and so that is our commercial break.
25:10
And when we come back, Hinata and Kageyama are fighting once again, because right after a moment of like, joy and triumph, they have to yell at each other because they don't know yet that they want to kiss each other. What are they even fighting about, do you think? I fucking know, I think I skipped right over that bit because I'm like ah, just another day in the life.
rainbow
25:27
Like I, just at this point, I'm like ah, just another day in the life. Like I, just at this point, I feel like the Karasuno Senpai, where it's just like oh, those two are fighting again, Whatever.
em
25:33
Yeah, no, the first note I have for the second half is because Seijo is on the sidelines and Oikawa is like they only got better because of my advice.
rainbow
25:42
Yeah, Daichi is like well, this is all because of me, which a little bit yeah, bit yeah, and just like with Bokuto, that's gonna come back to bite you in the ass.
25:50
um, yeah, and this is where I have the note that more people are coming to watch the match we see more people showing up and more people like paying attention, like sometimes I feel like we see people in the stands and it's like other players who are in between games and they're just chit-chatting with each other. But right now all of the eyes are on Abajosai and Karasuno.
em
26:09
So now, but Seijo is not one to be beat. So they go for the quick again, and you know their strategy. Seijo's strategy is to receive it, but because you know they have this new quick, Hinata has more time in the air. He is able to get it to a place like it goes right past the Libro and they're like fuck. But not for long, because then we have number two, who is Matsukawa, comes to block and it's very creepy. He like comes up and he's like you don't want to hit over here, right, basically, he's forcing Hinata to, he's tightening up where Hinata can hit and so he's forced to hit it right to the receiver. So in just like two moves, seijo has already come up with a way to deal with Hinata's slide hit and we have, I think, right before that.
rainbow
26:52
We have a moment that I thought was very interesting, where, you know, we talk a lot of shit about Oikawa um and him being like such a bitch and being like the center of attention blah, blah, blah um and being such a brat. But I feel like he's kind of able to take his ego out of things when he needs to because, as Tanaka says, seijo switches setters like it's nothing, Daichi like steps back and it's like Hanamaki, you've got this and Hanamaki does a spike. And it's like Oikawa isn't even involved in that play and it's still a good play. It's like Oikawa doesn't need to be the control tower right, and it's almost part of that.
em
27:26
Like Oikawa brings out the best in everybody, even like he brings out the best setting in other people well, in order to bring the best, you have to be able to step back and let other people play their strength. And in that same line of thinking, like with Matsukawa, thinking of that block, it's not just Oikawa. That's like they're all strategizing and they're all thinking.
rainbow
27:46
They're a good team of strong team of six.
em
27:49
I would like to see them go against nekoma. That would be a long game that would be so.
rainbow
27:55
Oh my god, Daichi versus kenma would be a fascinating game. I actually do need to see that hey wake up, write this game. Yeah, we, we, we raise furudate out of their cryo chamber to write a new bonus chapter for us. Oh my, and Kuro versus Oikawa. Could you imagine the bitchy little tete-a-tetes they'd have at the net? It'd be sick. I need it. I would love that Lev would think Awazami is so cool. Oh my god. Yeah, well as everyone does.
28:27
And he would probably be like wow, you're so strong, but you're pretty short. You're like you're even shorter than the setter.
em
28:35
But listen, Seijo's not the only one's thinking. Hinata remembers Suga's instructions about Seijo's quicks With them. He should wait a moment before jumping to block, and he does it successfully.
rainbow
28:45
We have Tanaka recognizing that when Kindaichi comes up to serve, he likes to serve it in that really tricky spot which is where the back row setter is moving forward. But because Tanaka is aware of that, he's ready and it doesn't cause any problems, he's able to cleanly receive. Get that ball up for Kageyama Honeys. You think all those tricks you used in the last game are going to work on Karasuno? Uh-uh-uh, they're new, they're improved, they are better than ever. They're not the baby crows anymore. And then, yes, we're getting towards the end and we see the Seijo coaches having a little talk and I just want to say quick sub versus dub thing, the Seijo coach in the Assistant Coach sounds like a freaking teenager. Oh really, which is so ridiculous because so many of these characters actual teenagers sound like grown adults. So why is it? You have a grown adult and he sounds like a teenager. Anyway, that's enough about that casting.
em
29:36
So, yeah, we're right at the end of set one and the rotation has gone all the way around and Oikawa is back serving. Awazami can see it in his eyes that he is going to slam this thing through and warns Kondaiichi to cover the back of his head. And Oikawa does. We get that first like he hits it so hard that it's like his hand hits it. And then the next shot is the ball on the ground on the other side of the court and Karasuno like can't even do anything about it, but it is out.
rainbow
30:05
Yes, and that doesn't stop everyone being everyone from being completely freaked. Freaked out because when we see the ball hit the court, it like flattens out for a moment, like that was an intense, powerful serve.
em
30:18
And we get Taichi, who on the outside is like all right, lucky next one, and on the inside he's like that serve is practically a spike.
rainbow
30:26
And I called that a Sakura moment like from Naruto, because that's like I'm imagining him going cha. That serve was so strong, something like that. Like her little inner, like her little lizzie mcguire comes out oh my god.
em
30:39
And then Noya also is like blushing for a piece of that serve. He wants it to come at him he is like in love.
rainbow
30:46
yeah, Hinata is shaking in his boots, yachi is talking about how her arm would have come off. Like, yeah, fucking Oikawa. We always like he is aggressive. He is an aggressive player.
em
30:58
This whole thing is if you're going to hit it, hit it till it breaks.
rainbow
31:00
And honey he will break you.
em
31:02
So, with this out, that puts Karasuno at set point, seto pointo, exactly at set point, seto pointo, exactly. And we have a last minute swap in from seijo, a desperate play perhaps to save this set, and we are swapping in for da da dun, mad dog mad dog, and we have Kageyama thinking about how his serve will never be as powerful as Daichi's.
rainbow
31:28
But it doesn't matter, because karasuno is the stronger team of six. That's growth, baby I know it's beautiful, but yeah, we have mad dog coming in and everyone's like, and everyone's like whoa. Like he's not coming in as a pinch server, like he's just swapping out with kunami. Like what's going on? Who is this guy like? Why is seijo doing this?
em
31:48
oh who is she honestly, even if mad dog wasn't like crazy strong or whatever, this is kind of a good mind trick, like mind fuck to play on another team when you're in this position when you're at set point, yeah absolutely.
rainbow
32:01
we have a wise me serving again and it's so cool. I love a wise me serve um personally. He's just, it is strong, it's powerful in its own, in its own way. I, I just love a wise to me, um, but he's just, it is strong, it's powerful in its own, in its own way. I just love a wise of me. So he serves, but Kurosawa receives it. They get it up in the air, they return the ball, then Seijo also, they dig that sir, or they dig that spike, and they put it up for a set and it's going to be Kindaichi.
32:24
We see Oikawa thinking like Kindaichi is the one, and then we see running mad dog runs up, shoves kindaichi out of the way and like slams the ball through and it is like, and they give him the like, the like, really bold line, kind of like squiggly animation that they do when somebody's like doing something really fast and really powerful and after, when, like karasuno, karasuno was like kind of reacting.
em
32:51
they have that like I need a name for it, but it's like the evil spastic jazz that plays Like. It's like it's like a dying clarinet or something, and I don't know if it's just for Mad Dog. We hear it a few different times throughout the show and I have to pay attention when else it comes up, but it's always when, like something fucky happens. It's like I'm gonna get the sound for it and play it for you guys?
rainbow
33:20
yes, please do, because I don't. I don't always pay attention to the sound as much. I'm so glad we have you to pay attention to that kind of stuff, but but yeah, it is a really intense set. It's a really intense spike. Everyone's freaking out and that's where the episode ends.
em
33:35
I can't wait to talk about what happens right after this. It's going to be a great start to the next episode. I forgot that this is where it ends.
rainbow
33:43
Yes, and I do. I love Mad Dog and we're about to get into some stuff with him and I'm very, very excited.
em
33:52
Well, that's it for the episode. Yes, oh yes. And as Takeda, not Takeru, Takeda says, this is like a wrench thrown into the gears that are working together.
34:03
And you know they really dress Mad Dog up to be like. Is he really going to mess this up for us? We'll see. So now on to manga. Manga versus anime. As you were talking about the coin flip. Um, there was an interesting little note after that chapter, uh, where it says a fun fact during the coin toss-up. It's a little different. Uh, they changed it up to you know, fit the page count and make it more dramatic for the story. But since Daichi picked who serves first, Daichi would pick what side of the court they play on interesting okay, I can see why they're like well, that's like a real life detail.
34:37
That just doesn't. It's not quite as sexy on the page.
rainbow
34:40
Yeah, and I'm trying to remember when I played rec volleyball how that worked. I really can't remember if we flipped a coin and maybe the coaches picked. I'm trying to. I honestly don't know how it worked for us. Maybe they just randomly assigned us, that might have been it. It was like, okay, these teams are playing and this team's going to be on this side and this team's going to be on this side, and then we just switched back and forth.
em
35:01
Yeah, yeah, but yeah, that's honestly all I have for manga versus anime.
rainbow
35:12
Otherwise it was a pretty, very they're very true to the. Uh, I can't imagine trying to animate a fucking sports game. This is it's. It's just impressive that animation exists, period. But then animating fight scenes and animating sports crazy, I know.
em
35:22
Oh okay, who is our character spotlight this week today?
rainbow
35:26
we are talking about Yahaba shigeru, the handsome question mark Second year from Seijo. I have a note about his personality from the wiki Quote. He is a rather calm and carefree guy but can be serious and forceful when he needs to be. He's not worried about being a reserve setter but, on the contrary, he is cheering on his older colleagues with all his heart. According to Kindaichi, he also seems to be a bit shallow, as seen when he throws a ball in front of Yachi so that she notices him during the spring high preliminary match. I think shallow is probably a good word for Yohaba.
em
35:59
He.
rainbow
36:00
you know I never paid attention to the fact that he was the setter and I also like in his graphic we have like his you know his drawing, but there's also like a little note where it shows like him standing behind Iwaizumi. And there's a note that says this guy, he was the setter in the first practice match instead of Daichi, so he is the reserve, he's the backup setter, he'll be the setter next year after Daichi graduates, which, yeah, I don't ever think about that fact either, but I think that makes sense considering some things we're about to see with him. But yeah, moving on to his name, meaning His family name is Yahaba and it means width of an arrow, which is interesting, and I do know I think archery is like a very big thing in Japan. And then his given name is uh Shigeru and it means to blossom, manifest or cultivate.
em
36:50
It can also mean beautiful or elegant and outstanding wow, he's gonna be the new pretty boy when Oikawa is gone yeah, that is kind of what Yahaba is giving to me.
rainbow
37:00
He he's giving like knockoff Oikawa, like he's got the kind of flippy hair, he's got a pretty boy face. He's like weird about girls. He just needs his own Owaisemi, and maybe we'll find out who that is. So, yeah, moving on to his character sheet, where they remind us who he is, he is a second year at Abajosai High school. He's in class five. His position is setter. His height is 181.9 centimeters, which is about 5 11. His birthday is march 1st, so he is a aries am I?
em
37:34
no, no, I'm wrong you're.
rainbow
37:36
He's a pisces, he's a pisces yeah, I was gonna say I was like I don't think that's aries.
em
37:40
I get messed up because late march is Aries and I try and keep that in mind. But no, he is a Pisces, he's a.
rainbow
37:45
Pisces. His favorite food is ikurodon. Don't know what that is, but sounds yummy. His current concern filling Oikawa-san's shoes is tough.
em
37:56
Yeah, that's actually a pretty intimidating position to be in when you think about it.
rainbow
38:03
I would not want to follow Oikawa as the setter. Are you kidding me, like he?
em
38:05
doesn't seem to really like stick out as a setter in any way.
rainbow
38:09
I think.
38:10
I think, in a way, I think it's hard to when you have Oikawa as your senpai.
38:15
I think when you have and I think that's maybe like one of the reasons that Kageyama is, like, so impressive is that, like, even with Daichi around, they were still like, oh, this kid's gonna be a really good setter and, like, Kageyama was still able to stand out even in comparison to Daichi, which is why Daichi was so flustered by him, whereas Yahaba, I think, is the perfect reserve setter to be on Daichi's team because he's not flashy, he's not standing out. Oikawa doesn't have to worry about being subbed out for him, unless he's like practicing too hard and rolls his ankle like in season one, right. So moving on to his ability parameters, on their five point scale, his stamina and his jumping are both twos, his power and speed are threes and his technique and strategy are fours, and I think that makes sense. For a setter, having good strategy and technique is important and I'd imagine, being the reserve setter on Oikawa's team, you better have some good technique, yeah, okay. Moving on to the world's favorite game yes, it's who? And Haikyuu.
em
39:14
This week's scenario was brought to you by us and we were talking about what it should be and I asked Rainbow well, when does it come out? Because sometimes that helps? And she said January 6th. So of course I was like where were they? January 6th.
rainbow
39:31
And for those of you who don't understand the significance of that I'm sure y'all do. I'm sure. Yeah, I mean, how could you America?
39:38
really loves to steal the spotlight of world news, so yeah, so on January 6, 2020, we had a attempted insurrection. People stormed the Capitol because Donald Trump had lost the election to Joe Biden, and a lot of people thought that the election was stolen and thought that if they stormed the Capitol, they could take it back. And it was honestly like it's like it's something we joke about now, but it was actually so terrifying to know that was happening.
em
40:08
I was really. It was just like a surreal experience. I was at work, because of course I was, and my boss came out and was like they're storming the Capitol. I'm just watching it on YouTube where everyone's racist uncle is like beating up a cop. It was crazy.
rainbow
40:23
Yeah, uncle, is like beating up a cop. It was crazy. Yeah, it's like it's an attempted coup. Yeah, I mean a half-baked, badly attempted one, but surely attempted. Yeah, which I mean thank goodness it was half-baked. Um, and a lot of people have gotten arrested for that, including one of the bobs burkers voice actors.
em
40:33
Um, if you wonder why jimmy pesto sounds different but we did talk about it and it's like, well, none of them really. And we're like maybe the np, the NPCs, maybe Narita, and we can say that him and Kinochida were at the Capitol, but we can't possibly believe any of them would be. So the actual who and IQ for this week will be what are their New Year's resolutions?
rainbow
40:54
Yes, I think Lev was at the Capitol. No, not really.
em
41:00
Him and Tureshima. I'm just going to start naming people's faves right now yeah, no, I first of all.
rainbow
41:08
They're all in. They were all in japan. The mia twins spotted at the capital.
em
41:14
We get thousands of angry emails.
rainbow
41:16
Yes, no okay, so new year's resolutions.
em
41:19
Um, I want to say right off the end we are talking about all sorts of people.
rainbow
41:24
It's a long list. You don't have to go through all of it. We can just kind of go through them.
em
41:28
I will say I think Hinata and Kageyama would both be very like fitness based and like wellness based.
rainbow
41:34
I'm sure yeah, Kageyama is like. I want to be able to run longer or faster. Hinata wants to have a jump, a jump height higher than Kageyama.
em
41:48
I was going to say nobody show Kageyama Forrest Gump.
rainbow
41:52
He'll run across the nation. Well, I mean, if he was running across Japan, it wouldn't take nearly as long. Yeah, that's true. Yeah, I think. Yeah, both of them are doing something fitness based. What about Daichi? What's his new year's resolution? To get a girlfriend for longer than two weeks? Yeah, well, you can't do that when you're best friends with Iwaizumi and clearly in love with him to be brave enough to come out. Oh, is that sad. Yeah, he's finally gonna confess his feelings to Iwaizumi. Yeah, Iwaizumi, I think, is also fitness based. I think his is like I want to be able to bench press, you know 300 instead of he can already do that come on or you know, I feel like he'd be.
em
42:30
Like you know, new year's, I don't need a new year's resolution, I'm always working on myself yeah, he's like I have.
rainbow
42:35
I have monthly goals and I always keep up with them, something like that. He's such a badass. Um Daichi. What is his new year's resolution? What is he trying not to be a cop anymore, stop I think maybe something to keep calm yeah, his new year's resolution is to not lose his cool so much. His new year's resolution is to not let his team lose their cool in front of any more vice principals yeah, to not get yelled at by the referees anymore oh yeah, good fucking luck with that.
43:09
Um, Asahi's new year's resolution is to not run away.
em
43:14
Yeah to like something with being a little braver maybe yeah trying leaving his comfort zone.
rainbow
43:19
Perhaps maybe being brave enough to ask Noya out on a date, just maybe. All right, Noya doesn't need a New Year's resolution.
em
43:26
Well, Noya is like you know, yeah, I feel like he's another one who doesn't need one, but he's got like an insane bucket list of like places to travel and like skydive and stuff like that. It's all extreme shit. I would think, stuff that would push him out of his comfort zone doing something scared.
rainbow
43:45
Yeah, yeah, absolutely. Tanaka's New Year's resolution is to get a girlfriend. Is to get Kiyoko, yeah, specifically, yeah, no, you're right, psycho Nason, and not even to get Kiyoko To get Kiyoko to look at him.
em
44:00
Yeah, he's the epitome of like barbie has a great day every day. Ken has a great day when barbie looks at him. You're absolutely correct. Uh, Saeko nason um, maybe wants to cut back on drinking no, she, she wants to drink more.
rainbow
44:16
I don't know what you're talking about, um, to I don't know. Probably something with um, her, like her school club yeah, that we won't get into now. Um, oh, no, they talk about it. They talk about her being, uh, part of, like, the, the taiko drum club and how she cares about that more than she cares about school. So, yeah, probably something to do with that. I definitely not to cut back on drinking to drink more. Um, her new year's resolution is, the next time she goes to one of the training camps to be able to drink, coach Nekomata under the table. Yeah, I put Takenoe and shamada um, just in case, but to be brave enough to be together I'll ship them too, why not?
em
44:56
yeah, you might as well to adopt one of the volleyball boys yamaguchi to adopt yamaguchi as their son.
rainbow
45:01
Yes, yamaguchi's, uh. New year's resolution. Confess to tsukki that and to successfully do a jump float. Serve, yeah, in a game.
em
45:14
Yahaba's new year's resolution um, I don't know, get stronger to fill Daichi senpai shoes.
rainbow
45:25
Yeah, probably, and probably something girl related yeah, um, to get his hair to be perfectly coiffed, um, and stay coiffed during the game. Yachi's is to probably just be like a little bit less nervous, to be more confident in herself, to be true to herself. Yeah, really, yeah, yeah, a lot of these characters are, uh, resolving to ask out their crush. Yeah, she's determined to tell Kiyoko. Oh, she's like determined to tell Kiyoko how she feels before Kiyoko graduates. That's beautiful, and she's like she doesn't even think that they'll like get together or anything, but she's just like. I just want to be brave enough to say it. Oh, okay, Kiyoko.
em
46:05
Her New.
rainbow
46:06
Year's resolution is to get Tanaka and Noya to stop fucking bothering her.
em
46:09
Seriously.
rainbow
46:10
Mad Dog. His New Year's resolution is to be a wise-a-me yeah In anything Kindeji.
em
46:20
Maybe find a new hairstyle.
rainbow
46:26
I think we're stuck with that one maybe, um, let go of the past. Yeah, I think he's another one. He needs to let go of what happened between him and Kageyama well he wants that kiss, do we? Have anything for the spoiler?
em
46:36
zone. I don't have anything. We're like in the midst of action, so I'm just like, okay, pause, and then we'll get back into it. There's really, yeah, like the only thing I could talk about in the midst of action. So I'm just like, okay, pause, and then we'll get back into it.
rainbow
46:42
There's really, yeah, like the only thing I could talk about in the spoiler zone would be stuff that will be happening in the next few episodes, and that's not spoiler zone worthy.
em
46:51
All right, well, so no spoiler zone. So we'll just leave you with this. Hey, catch me on Twitter. Blue Sky-L-Y-H-Q-P-O-D. You can also send us an email. Hey, send me an email, I'm lonely. Flyhqpod at gmailcom. F-l-y-h-q-p-o-d at gmailcom. And hey, until next time y'all fly high.
rainbow
47:14
Ah, we're going to do the Wicked Until I stop loving Wicked with all my heart. So never.
