hello everybody and welcome to fly a queer Haikyuu podcast I'm rainbow they, she and I'm em, and today we are talking about season three, episode eight. An annoying guy an annoying guy.
rainbow
00:23
Yeah, I think in, uh, in the dub it was a disagreeable man, which made me think we were gonna be talking about Washijo way more. But we do get to him. The annoying guy is Hinata. Yes, well, they, yeah, exactly so. An annoying guy makes sense for Hinata. Disagreeable man makes more sense for Washijo. That's true dub.
00:44
You tried, you know, I mean listen different meanings. That's fine, but before we get into that episode, I have two quick things I want to talk about, and the first thing is cory booker's speech on the senate floor, which, I'll be honest about, I was pretty dismissive of at first. I think, like my general like disillusionment with the democratic party, just like, really like led to some cynicism where I was like what is this even gonna do? He just stood for 25 hours, which, like, is actually like an impressive physical feat. I could not do that and he did prep for it. And something my friend pointed out to me that I thought was very important is that his constituents in New Jersey he's a senator from New Jersey, for those of you who don't know his constituents were writing to him and like, just like demanding that action be taken and something be done. And you know, I think in the, the Democrats have a minority in the Senate, so there's really only so much they can do. And so he he took that. He decided to take some form of action.
01:37
And I had another friend actually friend of the pod, sj former guest who pointed out that you know he is, he put his body on the line in a certain way, like this isn't, it's not healthy for him to do this, and he had to, like stop eating and like stop drinking in advance. For me, I am still looking to see what comes next. You know, this cannot be the, the full explosion. It needs to be the spark that lights the flame. And and I also think, like I am the, I am already so motivated to do things and I'm already so like insistent that, like change needs to happen. But I understand if there are people out there who are like morale is really low. They don't, they're really like frozen in fear. You know this could provide inspiration for them.
em
02:17
I don't think you were wrong to critique it and I compared it to like the Barbie movie, where, like to a lot of us, it's like this is still not enough and this still feels like performative or whatever. But for a lot of people they did need to see it and you know Fox News was talking about it and so it definitely had, I think, a positive impact.
rainbow
02:36
But of course we have a long way to go yeah, I mean, I still think I think there are like individual people within the Democratic Party, like Cory Booker, like AOC, like Bernie, who I really do think want like this, similar changes that I want, maybe not as as radical or as revolutionary, but and that's like the problem is.
em
02:55
in general, none of these people are quite radical enough, but yeah, yeah.
rainbow
03:00
And I mean and you know to speak to the performative nature of it I mean, I think performance can be very powerful. I think that's one of the reasons Donald Trump has such a big following is that people, for whatever reason, find him charismatic. And he is. He's putting on a show, he's a clown dancing before them and they love it.
03:15
And I also just want to say that, like, historically, the longest record before this for like doing a filibuster well, this wasn't a filibuster, but like a speech on the senate floor was Strom Thurmond in 1957. He stood for 24 hours and 18 minutes and he was a racist segregationist and I think his filibuster was like it was to like, uh, delay voting in like some sort of like civil rights bill. So, like, I think, narratively, this is very powerful. I just think you know it's just, it's not enough to just have a good story. We need, like effective change. And, moving on to something that, um, I deserve, I think deserves equal, if not more praise is, um, the win in the Wisconsin Supreme Court, which now has a liberal majority because Susan Crawford was elected. So I think the voters of Wisconsin really like hell. Yeah, thank you for stepping up.
em
04:12
Well, and what's really important here is Elon tried to buy votes for the Republican and it didn't work, and there I saw interviews of people on the street and apparently like there was just campaign ads being shoved down their throats. Like you can buy some of us, but not most of us.
rainbow
04:27
Yeah, he spent. According to Associated Press, he spent more than $21 million to defeat Crawford, and I just love that Musk has taken this gigantic L. I think he needs more losses and I hope he feels embarrassed and I hope he continues to cry on Fox News about his Tesla stocks going down. So, yeah, so I just I wanted to celebrate those things. You know we often talk at the top of our episodes about, you know, the horrors of the world. But end again, you know these are just small steps.
04:58
At the end of the day, it's never really going to be one big action that changes things in the direction we want. It's people working together. And if that means that I need to like put aside my cynicism and like be okay with the performative nature of certain things, then, like, I can be okay with that and just I'm looking forward to seeing what comes next out of this. And you know, if Cory Booker if part of this is he's going to use this in 2028 to run for president, well, you know, that's why we critique the system, because the system is at fault. Okay, so I think that's all I have. Do you have anything else that you want to talk about?
em
05:31
I kind of wanted to give a personal life update of ours, even though we didn't discuss it, but we did recently just sign a lease for a new apartment, this time a two bedroom. We don't really talk about our own personal lives too much, but we are in this tiny little one bedroom that we've had so many issues with the landlord and blah, blah blah, and we do this in our echoey living room and we're just so excited we're going to move over the summer and we're going to have so much more room and maybe have like a really like specific space where we can record and like record comfortably and actually look at each other, because we're with the way we're set up, we don't really get to look at each other all that much we just, yeah, we have a small space to work with and, like we have so many rooms, you guys, you don't even know.
rainbow
06:16
So yeah, just just exciting things going on yes, we're very excited about that and we will. That's the first episode we record in the new apartment, which will be later on down the line. But as soon as we, as soon as we record in our new studio, we'll let you know.
em
06:33
All right, that's all I got. I'm ready to get into this episode.
rainbow
06:36
All righty, it's Em's turn to do her recap. And, folks, she wrote it last night.
em
06:42
I did. I was on top of my Haikyuu homework. This time, guys, you'll be really proud of me.
rainbow
06:46
You know what I am. You're going to get a little kiss and maybe a little something more later for it.
em
06:52
Not in front of the children.
rainbow
06:53
All right, are you ready, ready? All right, and tres dos uno.
em
07:05
Volleyball is a sport where you're always looking up Shira Torazawa's strength struggles against Karasuno's unrelenting attacks and scrappiness. Ushijima is more annoyed by Hinata than ever, and it's a game of numbers to keep from our boys tiring out before this game is over. It's a real nail-biter as we inch our way through the final set in this episode of Haikyuu.
rainbow
07:21
Oh my gosh. I mean we're really getting. We're really getting towards the end and you can feel everything ramping up. It was like I feel like the whole game, like this whole season. We kind of were like, you know, we started probably at like a three or a four, but now we ever like cranked up to like nine and we're about to hit 10. It's so good yeah.
em
07:38
This whole, this whole episode does feel very edge of your seat. We start off eight to four in the fifth set. Ushijima and Tendo have been just killing us and we were right where we left off, where Tendo was standing victorious after his block. From the end of the last episode we have a wise me asking did that just decide this match?
rainbow
07:56
I said chill, we're not there yet no, and ROG is very upset up in the stands. He and the random young guys that are now just like a team in my mind. They're going to go out for drinks after this game together. I hope so, yeah, but they're all just like. Oh my God, they're like so into it. I love getting. I love these audience inserts that we get. Yeah.
em
08:23
Suga is a little hot girl on the court because he like stares down Tenno and he's like next time we're going to do that again. And I think in the dub does he say like keep your eyes open. Oh no, in the manga I think he says keep your eyes open because we're going to do that again, kind of mind fucking him a little bit and Tenno just kind of looks at him.
rainbow
08:39
Yeah, he is not amused by this. And I did want to say like I do kind of see them as a rare pair. Listen, the great thing about shipping is you can ship anyone with anyone else and it doesn't matter because they're fictional characters. So even though not a lot of people ship Suga and Tendo, I see it and I did read one Suga 10 fic before that. That was pretty fun. They were like neighbors. I think it was even an Omegaverse, but it was rated T so it didn't get too into it, but it was still like it was kind of cute. They just like they had little banter and they, they realized that they, they liked each other a bit Nice. And then I was a little confused. I think Shiratorizawa gets to eight points and then do they switch sides? Yeah, they're switching sides. Okay, I feel like I'm sure that's I, they. You know, they gotta keep it fresh.
em
09:19
Now I'm sure there's an actual rule about it, but I forget what it is.
rainbow
09:27
But during this timeout time, yukai gives Hinata some blocking advice, like if the timing looks late, switch to a soft block yes, well, and I mean obviously with Tsukishima out, Hinata is our other like starting blocker and we have Narita there to help. But you know, I do like that Yukai is like okay, suki's gone and like Suki, even like kind of like, did the whole? Like Hinata, you're in charge while I'm gone, kind of thing, and Suukai's giving Hinata advice and there's like when he's talking about doing the soft block and Hinata's all like, oh, the plate technique. Um, it does like a quick flashback to Karasuno using that technique on Hyakuzawa, um, from season two will be.
em
10:05
Obviously, everything happens in the show for a reason, so this will be relevant later. So Ushijima is up to serve.
rainbow
10:11
Yes, and he gets another service ace. No, he hits the net here. Oh, okay, right before he serves up in the stands we have our little our audience members, Takinoe, shimada and Saeko, talking about who Ushijima is up to serve again, and they count. Takanoe counts on his hand how many serves Ushijima has had, and he counts to six, but he counts. I like I've always noticed it where, like, he counts in a way where he like counts down and then he like flicks his pinky up. Um, so I looked it up and a learning corner moment from Rainbow. It's Rainbow's learning corner. I put that in the notes.
10:48
So and this is from japanesestackexchangecom, somebody was asking about it and this person answered and so when you count for others to see, you do it just the way we do in the United States. So those of you who don't know, if you're counting to somebody, you're saying like, okay, I'm going to count from. If you're counting from zero to five, you start with a fist closed and then you do one, two, three, four, five, right? So in Japan you do that. If you're counting to other people, if you're counting to yourself, you start with your hand open and then you put your fingers down as you're counting. So you do one, two, three and you start with your thumb. So one, two, three, four, five, and then I guess if you want to count, you know past five. Then you go backwards, so six, seven, eight, nine, ten, because I've always thought that was interesting. I didn't notice that at all. That's awesome. I've always noticed that. I'm just like, oh, that's so cool. Why is he counting that way? And it in Japan, but yeah.
em
11:41
Ushijima got more than a third of the points in that one moment.
rainbow
11:46
Just yeah, just by serving. Okay, so, but then. So, like you said, Ushijima serves it and it hits the net.
em
11:52
His luck runs out, thank God. And now it's Hinata's turn to come onto the court.
rainbow
11:58
Yes, and we get Narita serving.
em
12:01
Oh, yes, yeah, Narita is holding his own on the court.
rainbow
12:06
I would say, yeah, I feel like there's not. I feel like, as typical with specifically his character, he's so backgrounded Narita serves to Reon, but the receive is a little off and so Reon gets it, but Ushijima has to cover and get the second hit and it. I was wondering I they didn't really like go into this and we don't get any of Narita's thoughts in his head ever why would we?
12:26
um so, but it looks like maybe he put it in an awkward spot on purpose. Like he, he's maybe one of those ones who like like Suga, because Suga does that as well where, like, because they are not doing jump serves, he just does a normal overhand serve. And so I think, when you're doing an overhand serve like that, like, I think, because you don't have quite the power that a jump serve has, you still have to like use it strategically. And so it looks like that was on purpose.
em
12:50
I think so.
rainbow
12:51
I think that they're trying to serve at him. And yes, so now Hinata is back.
em
12:56
Ushijima is staring him down like he wants to eat him for dinner. So they're playing and the ball is coming down and Hinata sees it coming, but it's too late to put his hands up. So he moves his face just in time for the ball to hit and it bounces off and he almost falls backwards.
rainbow
13:14
He's beauty he is, grace he receives with his face. Please, I love it. This isn't the first time he's got. He's taken a ball to the face?
em
13:23
No, not at all. He's like I said. He's quick to gather himself up and he thinks to himself it's not Kageyama, don't jump it's first tempo with anyone. But Suga uses Hinata effectively as a decoy, fooling Tendo, and sends it to Tanaka.
rainbow
13:37
Yes, so I like this moment because we get like it's a very slowed down moment where we see the ball coming, we see Hinata turning his face to the side, getting hit in the face, and we cut for just a second to Ushijima seeing this happen and he is like he's pissed about it. He's so, he's so mad about Hinata this whole game. I think he has like a really interesting reaction and I think he notices that Hinata, this whole game, I think he has like a really interesting reaction and I think he notices that Hinata like turned his side to the side and, of course, Hinata, after getting a ball to the face, immediately goes for a spike. He's like, no, I'm gonna look like I'm gonna get this ball, but, like you said, he's a decoy and Suga sends it to Tanaka.
em
14:19
And then we learned that Hinata moved his face purposefully as Tanaka and Suga check in on him. He saw it coming and didn't want it to hit his nose. Well, if I got a nosebleed I'd have to go back on the bench. And then we have Tendo and Ushijima who hear this, and they both look pissed.
rainbow
14:34
I love this moment because you don't see Hinata's face, but you can tell by the reaction from the others that he has to have one of his predator stares. You know, his face looks insane right now and I think that's why Ushijima and Tendo are like because Reon. You also see his reaction and he's just like what the fuck is this kid?
em
14:52
I think it's just like the way that I allude a lot to his scrappiness in this episode, that Hinata will bleed to win this game, and I think it just like kind of shakes up these very like by the book players. So then we get some insight into why Ushijima is looking like death. He thinks to himself when he you know, when he first heard about Hinata, and then the day they met, he figured Hinata would be like the other small but talented players he's met before. I have like the exact quote.
rainbow
15:18
Okay, can I read it? Sure, okay. So first of all, in the dub he talks about when he finally met Kagehina and he said the little one started to get cocky. I love that line. That's a great dub moment. And then I wrote out the full quote here because I thought it was interesting. I thought he'd be like the other small players who I've dealt with, who compensated for their short stature with excellent technique. But I was wrong. He shows no sign of the talent or intelligence of those other players. But now I see it. There's just something about him, something I can't stand. And then he says something else. But he says it's not that I have any doubt we'll win this game. But above all, I want to defeat him and I want the weight of that loss to crush you.
em
15:58
Because you're feeling threatened, bitch Like. That's what he's kind of like working around. And this is where I thought of the metaphor RuPaul drag race fans stay with me because Ushijima is really giving, like the pageant queens that hate on the rough around the edge, edges, comedy queens, um, because they're threatened that even though they're not as polished or experienced, they still are better because they have what Cunt, which stands for charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent, which I think Hinata has nerve and talent. He has all of those actually by the bounds, and I feel like Ushijima is kind of going through what Kageyama went through in the beginning of like, just like pissed at this dissonance of like't have technical skills but you're still like scoring points and are a threat, and that pisses me off because I don't understand how that could be true yeah, it's so interesting, it's like Hinata has so much potential that it comes through even though he lacks the like technical skill.
rainbow
16:59
I think there's definitely differences in the ways that Kageyama feels about that and Ushijima feels about, I think you know, like the. The end result is the same they're angry, but I and we'll talk about it a little bit in the spoiler zone where Kageyama is coming from but with Ushijima, I think you hit the nail on the head he has been threatened by Hinata's like ability because, again, this isn't what strength is supposed to be. So, um, I have one more thing about that. When Ushijima says and I want the weight of that loss to crush you, Ushijima and Hinata are almost giving legoshi and haru from b-stars. Explain that to me.
17:36
There's just something. It's the predator pray thing of it. Ah, because, and because of Hinata's reaction, because Hinata, like Ushijima, isn't saying anything out loud. These are all his thoughts. But Hinata feels the presence of that and does one of he like, has like a moment where he like freezes and then he like jumps back really quickly and I just I love the way he senses danger and shoots back, and I'm also gonna bring that up in the spoiler zone. So that's the the Hinata moment. But then, uh, the audience notices something going on on the sidelines.
em
18:04
Kageyama is warming up and he's doing this. These adorable kangaroo jumps. He's warming up to return and, like they have a cool, there's a cool shot of him, like you know, stretching his arm and he looks ready to go, and he sure is yeah, I really love, uh, I.
rainbow
18:20
There's something about this that gets me so pumped like. I just remember the first time I watched this season I was like oh my god, oh my god, Kageyama's ready to go back in, let's go.
em
18:30
I'm just a Kageyama fan and that's all. I need a Kageyama jersey yesterday.
rainbow
18:35
I mean, the fact that you don't already have one is kind of amazing gift idea. Just saying I'm well, hey, Hinata jersey, let's, let's go. Um, yes, um, and. And it feels like like Hinata is like pumped about this game and now Kageyama is like pumped and ready to get back into this game and poor Hinata does have blood in his mouth.
em
18:55
He's just like dealing with it, which?
rainbow
18:59
sir, you can't play a game if the inside of your mouth is bleeding. It's literally just like well, well, if anyone sees blood, then I'll be taken off the court. It's like honey, you need to take care of yourself. And I did read real quick side note I read a fic where Hinata goes to Inarizaki instead of Karasuno and they have like very similar moments. It's a really good fic. It's by Boom Turkey.
19:19
I feel like there's a little bit of like a read on like Karasuno, where, like a similar thing happens, I think against Shira Torizawa, where Hinata gets a ball to the face and then he's like and he does the whole. I turned to the side so I wouldn't get a nosebleed, but he gets pulled off the court anyway and he's mad. And it's a little bit like maybe if Takada and Yukai were a little bit more experienced, they might have been like hey, let's maybe check on him real quick, because I assume a medical timeout is not the same as like a regular timeout. I assume if it's like somebody's hurt, it's like yes, like that doesn't count as one of your two timeouts, like let's see what's going on.
em
19:51
If Hinata put up a good enough show of seeming fine, they probably just weren't gonna let it go, because I mean, now is not the time to be taking breaks?
rainbow
19:58
no, absolutely, um, and you know what? That's something else we could potentially talk about in the spoiler zone if we wanted to. But, we also, while Hinata is like he's, like rubbing his face and like thinking about he's, about how he's bleeding, and we see Washijo looking at Hinata from the bench and he also looks pissed.
em
20:17
Yeah, they're all so mad that he's better than he'll ever be. So they go for another synchro attack. Yes, Suga thinks if we go for the somewhat safe route it means we haven't changed. And we have Tendo, who is caught up thinking about who, because we have Noya going to set and he's thinking who he might pass to him and he's like, oh, it's probably going to be this guy, but he hasn't. He hasn't passed to number 10. And then he remembers Suga's words. And then he, Tendo, is like once I'm in this kind of thought process, I've already lost. And it goes to Tanaka of all people. And they get the point, bitch.
rainbow
20:50
Yes, I love how I feel like it's often Tanaka who people aren't really thinking about, who gets that point in. He is the Karasuno sleeper agent, yes, but yeah, I think it's interesting how we're seeing like Tendo can't block the way that Tsukishima does. His brain just doesn't work that way, like he is just so much. It's almost like emotion versus logic with the two of them, where Tsukishima is so rational and analytical and like for him those calculations happen, I think, so quickly that he can make his decisions, but for Tendo he has to go on like just his gut feeling, because if he's trying to think about it, it just it weighs him down.
em
21:26
But so Tendo didn't jump for it at all because he got caught up in his thought process. And even Washijo is like put your hands up, I don't care if your hunch is wrong, I put you out there, knowing damn well that might be a possibility.
rainbow
21:37
Yes, yeah, I like that. Yeah, he says something like I don't care if you guess wrong, at least put your arms up.
em
21:43
Exactly and right before that, though, I have that cute little note of TanaNoya celebrating Tanaka's spike, and they're going in the sub. They go soy, soy, soy.
rainbow
21:54
And then Hinata, who is the little brother of these two, is like soy they're. So I don't remember, yeah, I don't remember what they were doing in the dub, but it's very adorable, Okay. And then it's time. It's time for our boy to get back in. Kageyama is back, and Hinata is immediately a little shit to him.
em
22:08
Yeah, he's like Batyama-kun. Are you finally back? You missed him. Don't even lie.
rainbow
22:14
And I. This is like I think this might be my favorite Kageyama dub moment, because Hinata says that little shit thing to him and then Kageyama, it's his turn to serve. So he like it gets all dark and he's all like moody and he like points to Hinata and he's like better watch the back of your head squirt. Oh, my God, not the squirt.
em
22:33
I love it. It's so funny, so Kageyama comes back with a fucking bang.
rainbow
22:41
Kageyama comes back with a fucking bang. Kagehina, sorry, are you just excited? I have a few. Yeah, well, I have. I have a note about Kageyama serving. Ok, go for it. Yeah, so it's Kageyama's turn to serve, and his face when he goes up to serve is just so precious. He is a sweet little baby who just wants to play volleyball.
em
22:56
Is this when he looks down at the volleyball with a wiggly smile. I think I must have missed that while I was taking notes. It's okay.
rainbow
23:01
I have a picture of it and I will be posting it when I post the episode, because it is like one of my favorite Kageyama moments. It's just like. It's like, oh, you know what he's not like, just an angry asshole. I think this was the true moment for me where I was like, oh, this is not Sasuke, this is an elevated version of Sasuke. This is who Sasuke could be if he just let Naruto love him. Yeah, absolutely okay, yeah. So then Kageyama serves and and it is like really incredible, um, and I think somebody oh the Libro, um the Libro tries to get the ball, but it like is really hard to get and and he thinks to himself, he serves like that after such a small break. And I said, duh, Kageyama is amazing. Of course, his first serve back is an amazing serve.
em
23:46
They should almost like utilize this, like take Kageyama out near the end of matches to give him a rest and then, like, because he wants to be on that fucking court, so then he's rested and like pumped up more than ever before yes, well, and then.
rainbow
23:59
So I think the Libro does like at least get the ball up in the air and it goes back to Karasuno's side for a chance ball and Kagema just goes for it. He gets the first touch on the ball. He's like he literally is so excited. Nobody is prepared for it, because I think Daichi was even like going to get the ball, but Kagema was already there to set it. And who does he set it?
em
24:18
to, of course, his boyfriend Hinata, and they do that super quick straight down move that they showed off during the warmups. And what I love about this moment is, once again, even though Kageyama is firing on all cylinders, Hinata once again out monsters him. Because we then see Kageyama looking angrily at him thinking I thought our regular quick would be enough to, you know, have a bang. But he didn't expect Hinata to come at him like that for the straight, and he was like, doesn't he know that's dangerous Bitch, you love it.
rainbow
24:47
I thought they were going for like a first tempo attack, but then Hinata's like already there to do the minus tempo and he hits it straight down and they both look so cool and the crowd is going wild and I said yeah, Kageyama um is pissed and a little turned on by it, and now it's starting to look unsure who might win.
em
25:05
And the Shiratorizawa cheering section has to be reminded to get loud again.

25:09
They're all starting to get a little nervous and we see the Karasuno cheering section is also cheering as loud as they can as well. Um, and then we get Semi coming in as the pinch server again and we get two randos from Shiratorizawa talking about why Semi isn't the main setter, and one of the guy one of the guys it like just giving the most. Like I'm on the bench but I pretend like I'm a big part of the team guy, he, he's just like I prefer Shirabu's reliability.
em
25:39
And we have Semi thinking. I know why I'm not the regular setter over Shirabu, and it's because he wants to be the strong one, he wants to show off, whereas everyone is like so ready to be a cuck for Ushijima, which I find so goddamn boring, and Semi also doesn't want to do that.
rainbow
25:59
But with serves, with serves, serves, he is free to do whatever he wants. Yeah, my note here is we get prima donna Semi's monologue. I love this queen, yeah, I. Semi and Tendo, I think, are two of my favorites from Shiratorizawa because, like Tendo, like he loves Ushijima, obviously, but, like you know, with him blocking, it's like different. He's not all like bow before the king, and Semi's just like not listen. I'm a good setter and I could be the main setter, but I want to come out here and show off how cool I am.
26:22
Yeah, so Semi, um, the queen of Shiratorizawa, um, he gets a no touch service ace and I think Tendo like does a cute little no touch service ace, um, and so then Karasuno calls a timeout, I think probably to break the momentum, because what that brings, uh, Shiratorizawa up to like 12 points, I think, yeah, they're 12 to 9 now, yeah, which is, and they only need 15 this set. So Ukai calls a timeout and he's trying to think of something to say to lift their spirits. He's like thinking to himself, like what can I say during this timeout to like get them pumped up again? And then we hear the Shiratorizawa cheering section making a ton of noise which isn't helping the Karasuno morale.
em
27:01
Right. And then this is where we have Saeko yelling that now is not the time to be silent, and she leads the cheer for Karasuno to get loud again. Then, unfortunately, those weirdo Shiratorizawa show-offs start singing their school's anthem and they just have the numbers they're taking over the sound.
rainbow
27:18
Yeah, because I mean everybody on Karasuno is cheering so hot, so loud. We even see Izumi and Koji cheering really loud and like what Saeko does works for like a minute. But then, yeah, those fucking weirdos sing their weird school song, which I'm sorry. There's nothing weirder to me than a school song.
em
27:34
It honestly feels very horror movie because they just start like chanting the song, like okay, we get it. Yeah, and Saeko is pissed about it. So I always forget that Suki is not the only one to stop Ushijima Hinata again thinking about the soft block thing. Ushijima spikes down and Hinata, just in time, puts his hand up and it hits his hand and then goes right back over. It's so cool.
rainbow
27:58
Yeah, it's back over, it's so cool. Yeah, it's like it's almost a soft. It's like half soft block, half receive, because he's really far back from the net. He's not even like he's jumped a like a little bit, but he's not like jumped up in the air and the ball hits him directly in the palm, goes over and hits like just inside the corner of Shiratorizawa, like I mean it was. It was Like if it had gone even just a little bit farther it would have been out and then, you know, Shiratorizawa would have gotten a point. But Hinata is the main character and he's got that luck on his side.
em
28:28
Yes, Hinata's scrappiness prevails once again. And now Karasuno is also in the double digits, putting them at 12 to 10.
rainbow
28:34
And then we have our commercial break and real quick, right before we get into the second half. I do want to say like, because it's another like slowed down moment where we get almost a freeze frame of the ball hitting um Hinata's hand and Ushijima and Kageyama are both shocked in this moment they're like what, how did he get there? And then we also see, after um Karasuno gets the point, washi jo and Ushijima. We get to see their faces and they're both pissed, sorry, not sorry. And then my first note for the second half is holy shit, that was only the first half of this episode I.
em
29:10
I know I know. So of course Kageyama has to, as you say, rain on Hinata's parade. You know Hinata is all pumped up after that and he says don't get so worked up over a lucky shot bitch. I said I'm gonna hit you. Give your boy props. I swear to god he goes. That's a block that got in the way of our receivers. But again, what I think is important is Kageyama does this because he wants Hinata ultimately to be the best.
rainbow
29:34
I said Kageyama is tough love's final boss yes, well, because again, he knows that that was a lucky shot. He knows that the only reason that because it was Hinata relying on like just his instinct and an innate athletic talent and not using like learned skills where he's practiced you know, and then we have Goshiki.
em
29:54
I said for some reason tries to taunt Ushijima saying that oh, you got stopped by nameless first year, so you still have a long way to go. And Ushijima simply agrees.
rainbow
30:03
Well, it's so interesting the dub definitely changes that where, like, Goshiki says something about like, oh, that, like little first year, I think he's kind of I think it's more of a read on Hinata of like, oh, like, he's just like he's trying to, trying to get this, and then Ushijima is just like yeah, he's like yeah, well, you know, things happen that way. So then we get Kageyama being a sweet little boy and going up to Narita and just very earnestly telling him, like, play however you feel comfortable, and like I'll back you up, and it's just like such a sweet moment of growth. He's trying to be the best setter he can be. He really is. And I mean we have not seen Kageyama and Narita, have they? Have we ever seen them work together before? I mean they must have like at some point, because if you're going to potentially go into the game, you have to have worked with the starting setter at some point. But they haven't like practiced together a ton.
em
30:50
Yamaguchi comes into pinch serve, which I'm always excited to see, good old Daichi tells him to go for it and that there's nothing to be scared of, and he pulls off a pretty good serve. They go into another synchro attack and Goshki blocks it and we think he gets the point, but he touched the net. Saeko says, oh, that's lucky. But of course the neighborhood guys have to be like no, no, no, you simple woman, it's more than just luck. And Grandpa Yukai says that the more that Karasuno attacks, the more that Shiratora is going to push back. And that is kind of what resulted in Goshiki being so for it that he touches the net.
rainbow
31:26
Yeah, my note here is up in the stands, m's daddy explains that Karasuno keeps on pushing Shiratorazawa, which is making them mess up in small ways. Yeah, exactly, which I feel like we've seen them do like this whole game. That's been like their whole. I mean not even just this game, that's like always. Their strategy is they're going to be persistently attacking you, and I think it's almost this way where, like, they're attacking so much that it like draws the other team into, like we need to be attacking this much, which, you know, for some teams might work, but for other teams it could lead to these little screw-ups, right, and then Tsukishima is still out with his injury, and so we noticed that Asahi is in charge of the timing of their blocks this is when I kind of noticed and remembered that Tsuki was gone and I was like, oh, I miss him.
32:11
I know I really like that. It's Asahi, though, because I feel like him and Tsukishima are like the two who have been like focusing on the blocks more than anybody. So now it's Narita, Asahi and Daichi. Right, Kageyama sets to Narita, but it's a little off. I think Narita blames himself. Oh, we do get a moment where it's his thoughts, where he's thinking, oh, that the timing was off, like I jumped too late or something, but he just barely gets the ball over. He gets it with like the tip of his fingers and Kurosano gets a point and we get Shirabu, who is shocked that Kageyama and Narita pulled off a quick attack when it's their first time teaming up in this game.
em
32:48
Yeah, buddy, stay mad, and he will. Yamaguchi does another solid serve, Goshiki misjudges it and it grazes his hands before going out. And what is interesting here is washi jo is about to call for a time out with for out of frustration, and Ushijima says to Goshiki, why would you have any reason to panic with all of your talent? And washi jo sits back down and is like all right, that's about what I wanted to say yeah.
rainbow
33:12
I mean, you know, despite my feelings about Ushijima's like elitism and the way he treats Hinata, I do think Ushijima is a good captain and a good ace. I think. I think, like you know, I think he was probably made captain you know, I assume just because he's like strong and he's the ace. But I think like he takes his job as captain very seriously and and Rayyan has like a little comment right where he's like I think you have it written down exactly.
em
33:41
I forget that Ushijima is the captain honestly all the time, Because, yeah, he almost doesn't seem like Captain Material. But Leon says he doesn't dress up his words. No encouragement, just the truth, which can either really tear you down or be really super inspiring. And I think in the manga it's like no other words need to be said between the current ace and the future ace yeah, yeah, it's like it's a really nice moment.
rainbow
34:02
I like this a lot. Ushijima says exactly what Goshiki needs to hear, and I think that's why he is captain material at the end of the day is because, you know, and I don't think he would be a good captain on any other team, I think he's a great captain fo Shiratorizawa um, because all the players are at such like a high level, because Washijo curates such like a strong team where, like Ushijima knows, his teammates are strong and he believes in that, and so therefore, he is going to remind them of that in their moments when they need it. Um and then, um, we do, we get up in the stands, we have ROG and the RYGs are really pumped for Karasuno.
em
34:42
They've managed to turn it around 13 to 12. 13 to 12? Ah, two more points and Karasuno could win. So this is Yamaguchi's last serve, and while it was solid enough, Shiratorizawa does get the point, with Goshiki avenging his last net touch loss.
rainbow
34:57
So's out for yamaguchi and Hinata get swapped back in yes, and so now it's Goshiki's turn to serve, and he gets a pretty nice serve in, um it's. It's kind of a soft one, and Noya barely manages to receive it, but Ushijima slams it back down before they can even react really pisses me off and in this moment here I didn't write this down, but I do remember.
em
35:18
You know they seem surprised that he went for this kind of soft serve, soft serve ice cream. That went to the front. They're like, oh, we thought he would just go all out. And I think, like the people the Shiratorizawa players on the sidelines are like there's a reason. He's our only first year starter. Don't fuck with Goshiki well, he's smart.
rainbow
35:35
That was a really smart move, especially, you know, I think that's something that we saw tsukishima do like early on with his spikes, where he was like soft spike, soft spike, hard spike. Yes, yeah, you get them used to one thing and then you pull out something else and they're not ready for it so this brings them to match point.
em
35:52
but reliable Daichi gets us another point by not only receiving well, but he hits, hits it over, and now they are officially at a deuce.
rainbow
36:01
Yes. So after Daichi's spike, Taichi who's number 12 on Shiratorizawa he thinks to himself you sent the guy who just received for you in to score and like, yeah bro, Karasuno is fucking ruthless. And like Daichi's not going to be mad about that, like that's what you do when you're on Karasuno you have to be ready to attack at any moment, exactly.
em
36:19
Washijo admits that Karasuno, using numbers to mess with them, is an effective attack. And then we get an olden day flashback of a young, bushy-eyebrowed Washijo.
rainbow
36:30
I love that you said that, because my note is flashback time and Washijo's eyebrows have always looked like that. I also want to. You mentioned that it's old school and we get to see the volleyballs they're using are like the classic, like typical white volleyballs, like you know.
em
36:45
Think of a volleyball, true yeah whereas, like now in you know, in modern times we get like the mizaki and the, the other one, the like red and and green one yes, and so we have a young Washijo who is very earnestly saying like all, listing his to his coach, basically, but his coach is very dismissive and is like yeah, now, if only you were a bit taller.
rainbow
37:05
Yeah, the stupid coach won't let Washijo play just because he's short, and thus a villain is born.
em
37:10
I mean literally. He's really affected by that comment and he's thinking to himself do I want a way to fight, even though I'm small? And then we get back to present day yes.
rainbow
37:20
And there's a really long rally going on that shows us that both teams are running low on stamina.
em
37:25
I think, yeah, this is, they're both just running on fumes now and this is where we have Washijo continuing that thought. No, I want a simple strength that can make anything surrender. And he's thinking that, as Ushijima is going to spike and I think this is the spike that ends that long rally. Yes, yeah, I said Karasuno is doing everything they can to keep this ball up, but stupid Ushijima gets the point anyway, bringing them back to match point for Shiratorizawa. And I think it's Takada who notes that everyone's moods have plummeted now.
rainbow
37:57
Yes, the boys are looking dejected, they're looking worn out, they're all looking down. I think Takeda like says, like, oh no, like we use both of our timeouts, we can't even call a timeout. What are we going to do? But then Ukai Ukai stands up and he shouts what?
em
38:12
Don't you dare look down. Volleyball is a sport where you're always looking up. And I wrote why am I about to cry? Because I don't know something about the way he stands up and yells.
rainbow
38:20
It just really gets to me and he has this like fierce smile on his face and I think it's the effect it has on the team where it works. They straighten up their shoulders, go back, they lift their heads, they do a little laugh like.
em
38:33
Grandpa Yukai is chuckling in the audience. He's so proud of his grandson and who is back. Yachi, which means suki, is fucking back.
rainbow
38:44
I love this moment because we get Yachi. So she comes up, she's back in the stands, she runs down and like grabs onto the railing and then, like the others notice her, and then they immediately look to the door and then we see tsukishima and Kiyoko jogging back in right on the nick of time baby, baby, like we need you. And that's what a cliffhanger. What a cliffhanger. We end on Tsukishima running back onto the court and who knows what's going to happen. What if he was like my hand hurts and I'd like to sit on the bench for the rest of the game. Could you?
em
39:10
imagine, please, no, he'd be like, just take my hand, I don't care, take my hand, Take my hand and that, yeah, so that's the end of the episode. So the next episode, I think, is going to just be all of this like deuce struggling, it's oh my god, oh my gosh.
rainbow
39:24
You guys, we're so excited. We only have two more episodes left. We have two more Episode 9, episode 10, and then we are done with the Shiratorizawa game. I wonder what's going to happen. Who do you have for manga versus anime?
em
39:40
manga versus anime. This episode covers chapters 179 to 183. Just a few notes here. During Ushijima's soliloquy about wanting to crush him, both of their faces are even scarier in the manga. It's something about their eyes that just seem to see. They're so like they really jump off the page. They feel like they're really looking at you and I said Furudate, you scary bitch. Um. And then when Hinata is tasting the blood in his mouth this does not happen in the anime, but he thinks of suki saying he better buy him some time and it seems to get him to focus. It's like he's doing it for suki. He's doing it for their fallen warrior yeah, literally. And then after Kagehina's straight down, quick, when Kageyama gets back on the court, someone in the audience says they must have been playing together for years to get that timing right. Shut the fuck up.
rainbow
40:30
Shut the fuck up, I love. I wish that was in the anime. Everyone and their mother can clock that these two are soulmates in a volleyball way because that's even something that, like uki said early on when he first saw them, is like were they childhood friends? Did they play together in middle school? Oh the, how cruel moment, yes, they are giving. We have known each other our entire lives and you know why. It's because they're soulmates. Their souls recognized each other from the beginning. It's the chemical reaction that happened when these two came together.
em
41:01
Yeah, so that's all I got for manga versus anime. And now, who is our character spotlight today?
rainbow
41:07
You know this episode had three potential characters that we could have done a spotlight for. We already did Narita and we could have done Washijo, because you know we get a flashback, but I kind of wanted to save him for the last character spotlight, it's Goshiki Tsutomu, you also made the very funny observation that while Narita, who was our character spotlight last episode, had about two sentences, Goshiki had three paragraphs yes, the the personality section on the Haikyuu wiki will the Haikyuu uh the character spotlight?
41:35
nope, the personality section in the Haikyuu wiki will often be two or three full paragraphs and, like I usually like for him, for Goshiki I pulled like the first paragraph and like a line or two from the second paragraph. Narita had two sentences. It's so disrespectful.
41:55
Furutada doesn't give a fuck about these background boys, but they'll give you everybody else's backstory it's like I feel like everybody like like Ushijima, Tendo, Goshiki, Semi and Shirabu, all have these like moments and like two, three out of the five of them, we get like full like flashbacks into their past anyway.
42:16
So, of course, um, I have that note from the wiki. So quote Goshki is hardworking, ambitious and enjoys showing off. Nearly every time he pulls off a good move, he looks around in excitement wondering if anyone saw him and occasionally being told off by Shirabu for this. He takes great pride in being the next ace of the team and tries to always carry himself in such a manner. However, this can also be a great point of weakness for him, as he can become overconfident in himself or falter under pressure and begin making mistakes. Although he admires Ushijima as the current ace, Goshiki still sees him as a rival and hopes to one day be an even better ace than him, which often causes him to be teased by his older teammates. He's so cute. I do love the like he's like the youngest brother. I like, I do. I love that he's so cute. I do love the like he's like the youngest brother.
42:59
I like I do. I love that he's like the baby of the team and I'm sure there's fics out there and if anyone wants to recommend any, please dms or send us an email. Um, because I want like a little like Goshiki centric, like he's like the little brother and everything, like he's scared of the senpai and he wants to be like tough for them, but he's still just a little baby eagle at the end of the day with his stupid rockley haircut. You know, I know Tendo has made fun of him for that haircut before.
43:23
I know Tendo has compared him to rockley yeah I just know what's happened and I want to see it. Moving on to his name, meaning we have his family name, which is Goshiki, and I will say I always used to say Goshiki um, but then I think the dub calls him Goshiki and I think that makes sense, I think in japanese. Correct me if I'm wrong, but like I think, like things like she and she like you, tend to pronounce them a little bit more quickly. There's not as emphasized yeah, I've noticed that. Yeah, so Goshiki um and his name means five colors, which makes sense, because go is five. I guess shiki means color um, so Goshiki. Goshki means five colors. And then his given name, Tsutomu, means worker and I also found other interpretations that meant hard worker and then also to serve well, he'd be serving yeah, and the five colors to me is giving gay.
44:15
He's uh, he loves a rainbow. Sure, I'm down with that. Um, all right, moving on to his character sheet. He is standing. It looks like he's giving a salute of some kind. Yeah, I'm not sure what's going on there. He looks too excited, um, but uh, he's a little cutie. Um, he, of course, goes to Shiratorizawa academy. He's in class 1-4. His position is wingspiker. His height is 5'11" and I forgot to look up the conversion. So you know what? Google it 5'11". His birthday is August 22nd, so he is a.
em
44:48
He's right on the cusp. That's like the last day of Leo, so he's a Leo Virgo cusp, which I think is very fitting.
rainbow
44:56
Actually the vibes are right. He's definitely, yeah, like. I don't know as much about virgo, but one of my best friends is a leo um and I totally see leo. For him, um, his favorite food is simmered flounder. Okay, loves a fish.
45:11
His current worry is he wants to learn how to do a sharper cross shot. Just say you want to be Ushijima? Yeah, you'll never be ushi, no, but I'm like, and I think it makes sense because he's got that line shot like down. So I'm sure he's like well, I need to get my cross shot up if I'm going to be the next ace of Shiratorizawa um. And then we're moving on to his five point ability parameters. And he, I think you can tell that he's the first year from these stats because his speed, his power and his intelligence are all threes and his technique, jumping and stamina are four. So I mean, it's not, that's not nothing, but that's definitely like he still has a ways to go. Yeah for sure. Yeah, I think he's a little cutie. I think he's a fun character.
45:51
There was I wish I could remember the name of it there's a fic that I read that's Goshiki's perspective and it's him like. It's very quick, but it's like in his first year he like realizes that like a bunch of his senpai are like gay and like genderqueer and like. So it's kind of him like discovering like different kinds of sexuality and discovering his own sexuality. And then he gets to being a third year and I think it's also a Goshi Hina fic because they're shipped together, because who isn't shipped with Hinata? Yeah, I will talk about it in season four why that makes sense as a ship. But like him and Hinata are dating and he's talking to Hinata and he's like the captain and it's his third year and he's like I think there's two characters, there's two players and I think they might like each other and like I want to do for them what my senpai did for me and it's just like really cute and he's just so earnest and silly. Okay, that's all.
em
46:37
I, you're going to give us hell next year, I'm sure. All right, now it's time for the world's who in Haikyuu, it's what kind of and this is very appropriate because of my note from earlier what kind of drag would they do? This is inspired by Minty and we're doing a Shiratorizawa edition. So, to start off the bat, Ushijima is a by the book pageant queen. She is looking right, she's got everything done properly and she is not comedy at all.
rainbow
47:05
She is Roxxy Andrews. Yes, she is Roxxy Andrews. End of season five. Roxy Andrews she is mad that Hinata as Jinx is doing so good, even though she's not even she's just a comedy queen. She's just a clown, she's a monster.
em
47:22
Well, and what's interesting is, Tendo kind of makes me want to do Jinx, like a mix of Jinx and Evie, oddly Like I feel like he could do a bunch of weird shit.
rainbow
47:32
I listen, I, anytime I like I've always wanted to do drag queen Tendo in a fic and there is one I have in mind where I want to do drag queen Tendo because I do think he would be doing like that. He, yeah, he'd be doing the like totally out there kind of drag, maybe not always like perfectly put together, but like really really good. Yeah, I think Evie Audley is a good comparison, but even then, like I think like the kind of drag he would do would be so fucking out of the box and off the wall they wouldn't even want him on.
48:01
Yeah, rupaul's drag race very avant-garde. Um, I think Semi would be like a real like all eyes on me queen, honestly giving like a little bit like valentina of like look at me. Um, I'm thinking specifically valentina in all stars, when every time she walked into the um the room at the beginning of episodes, she would be like she would like do a little twirl for the camera and be like look at me, look at my outfit. Yeah, I could see that Shirabu is, um, Shirabu is like Ushijima's little lapdog, yeah, for sure. And like is also, I think, also a pageant queen, also not into the comedy queens.
em
48:41
Shirabu kind of feels like a mid, like they hang on for a few weeks, but then they're just not that memorable.
rainbow
48:48
Yeah, yeah. And again, I feel like we did this last time too, where we're just talking about, like RuPaul's Drag Race, but I think also, like I could see Shirabu like she would do, like pageant circuits kind of thing. I don kind of thing. I don't think she would ever be the winner.
em
49:09
I mean honestly, I could even see her being like, instead of being like, the actual queen being like the like, the one who, like goes around and like gets all of the like money from everybody afterwards?
rainbow
49:13
yeah, definitely. Um, anybody a Goshiki? What kind of drag queen would Goshiki be? First of all, Ushijima's drag daughter? Yes, for sure from house Wakatoshi.
em
49:21
Oh my god, yeah, definitely so I think he'd probably follow in the footsteps of being like a proper pageant queen I think that's the thing.
rainbow
49:29
I think Shiratorizawa is a team of pageant queens with one comedy queen, yes, Tendo leon. Leon is giving very elegant. Leon is giving, like always on point, dripping in jewels.
em
49:43
Very tasteful, though I feel like he's really respect, she's really respected by, like, the baby queens, because I just think that she would be a good mother.
rainbow
49:51
She would be a great mother. Yeah, she is helping you sense. She is teaching you how to block your brows. She is helping she. She would be one of the queens who, like, sews other dresses for, uh, the baby queens, yeah. And then Washijo is like beginning of rupaul's drag race very limited, very narrow view of drag where it is like you have to absolutely look like a woman, you need to have a sensuous, you need to have tits, you need to have your brows done, um, like padded to the gods, like you need to be looking like a woman if you are doing any kind of like, if you're giving boy in any way, like absolutely not, you cannot do that like. I think very strict and rigid in those ideas. Yeah, he's just like a mean old judge absolutely.
50:35
I think that's it cool. Is there anyone from Shiratorizawa that we know?
em
50:40
there's so many of them, they're definitely a intimidating team. They always win all the trophies and it's annoying.
rainbow
50:47
Yeah, it's like how Shiratorizawa is. Nobody likes them.
em
50:52

rainbow
51:21
I have a couple of bullet points here. This episode, more so than, I think, any other episode this season, made me think a lot about things that we get both next season and in the time skip. So my first note is based on Ushijima, when he's talking, when he's thinking to himself about Hinata and like the other short players he's known who like compensate for their short stature with really good technique. Do you, do we know or do we think that Shiratorizawa has played um Kamomeidai?
em

I would think so, since they always make it to nationals yeah, and I just I like the idea of Ushijima and Hoshiumi facing off um and playing against each other, especially because they go on to play on the Adlers together. Yes and then okay. So then going back to Hinata, sensing danger when Ushijima is thinking about crushing him, reminds me of the moment from the movie when Kenma has his most like villainous, like looking at Hinata and being like stay interesting, okay, right, because he jumps back too right.

Hinata is always jumping away from the people who scare him.

Yes, yes, absolutely, absolutely well. He's had plenty of training with Kageyama. Um, and then um, I said, with the way Ushijima is acting in this episode, I just know he and Kageyama have a bitch sesh when they where they complain about how first year Hinata had basically no technique but was somehow still skilled. Like I bet they like just one night after practice. They're just like maybe practicing serves together. Bet they like just one night after practice. They're just like maybe practicing serves together. And they're just like Hinata man in his first year and Kageyama was like he was even worse before, like you should have seen him when he first started. Like I just love the idea.

I don't think it would be quite as passionate as that but I think there would be like just a moment of them being like this fucking guy, and I think even a step further, that they talk about Hinata and Oikawa, especially after my one of my favorite time skip moments when Kageyama gets the picture of them together and he stops Ushijima in his tracks and they both just look at it like dumb cavemen that's when.

That's when it happens. That's when they go to dinner together after practice and they just talk about the loves of their lives. I mean what? Yeah, um, yes, absolutely. And then my last note is I feel like I talk a lot, um, when I talk about Hinata being Kageyama's someone better.
53:29
I feel I talk about it a lot in a way that it's like it's destined, like. I feel like I talk about during that first game, Kageyama like saw the way Hinata was playing and something new inside of him that this was the person, his someone better. And recently I was thinking I was like, oh, what if it's actually not like this, like fate or destiny thing? But something inside of Kageyama chooses Hinata. He's like this is the one, this is the person I want.
53:51
It's not that like he's supposed to be. It's like I want this person to be my someone better. And that's why he's mad that Hinata isn't at that level, because he's impatient and he wants it now and he doesn't want to have to wait for Hinata get his shit together. Because he's chosen him because of, like, his ability, his speed and his the, the way he flies. He was just so impressed, something inside of him, that he was not able to like comprehend something subconscious was like this is it? This is the one which is the way I felt about you when I saw you on Twitter. You better stop.
