Hello everyone and welcome to Fly A Queer Haikyuu podcast. I'm Rainbow they she.
em
00:17
And I'm Em, and today we are talking about season four, episode two, Lost.
rainbow
00:22
Lost.
em
00:24
Love that show.
rainbow
00:25
You know, I used to watch it at like 6 30 in the morning when I was getting ready for school, and I didn't I wasn't following it whatsoever, but I was like this looks interesting, these people are hot. I've actually never seen an episode in my life. I, yeah, I've only ever seen those like few episodes from when I was a kid, um, and I just remember they were on an island and I was like that looks like like fun Reader. It was not fun, it was oh no, that's a spoiler, it was purgatory.
00:53
Moving on, yes, moving on, no chit chat, for today we're going to do a break from the horrors that persist to talk about something exciting we have with our long ass season ahead of us.
01:05
We are going to be doing a mid-season break and this time we want more listener responses and we are going to do who in Haikyuu scenarios.
01:15
So we're going to have a Google form with a ton of different who in Haikyuu scenarios, ones that we've done and also ones that listeners have submitted but that we don't feel confident doing Like I don't know what their starter Pokemon would be, I don't know how they would play Minecraft, but some of you might have those answers and we would like to get your responses and then we will share them on the pod and we are going to post that form. It'll be available starting today when this episode comes out, which I believe is May 19th, and it'll be open until June 15th, so you have a little bit of time about, you know, a month to go in and put those responses. So the Google form will be available. It'll be linked in the show notes. It'll be linked through our socials. If you can't find it anywhere, you can always DM us or email us and we can send it your way and don't be shy.
em
01:59
Seriously, you can always be anonymous, but have at it.
rainbow
02:02
You can always be anonymous, but have at it. Yeah, give us and like, feel free, like it's going to be long form answers, paragraph answers. So put whatever you want out there. Give us as much information as you want. We'll also have like a little additional. If you want to share anything else, that's just for us. You can do that as well.
em
02:15
If you want to whisper in our ear.
rainbow
02:17
Yes, so very excited about that. Again, those dates are today when this episode airs, which is May 19th. Until June 15th, the bonus episode will not be coming out until July, but because of our recording schedule we're going to record it a little bit early, so the form will close right before we record as opposed to right before the episode comes out.
em
02:41
Yeah, a little behind the scenes look into how things operate.
rainbow
02:50
Yeah, we got to be ahead of schedule here, all right. Anything else you want to add to that before we move on? No, all right, we're ready to get into this episode. Are you ready to do your recap? I'm ready to get lost. All righty and three, two one.
em
03:02
It's the ultimate volleyball tease for Hinata. As he continues to watch his fellow first-years get amazing experience at the training camp, his panic grows as his awareness of how far behind he is clashes with the fact that he could potentially be wasting these five days before the spring tourney. Our baby crow is lost, searching for a new way to look at his predicament. With the guidance of his teachers and senpai, and a little alone time in the supply closet, can he figure out how to fly even higher? Find out on this episode of Haikyuu.
rainbow
03:31
Not the alone time in the closet that does sound suggestive.
em
03:34
I didn't mean it to.
rainbow
03:35
You know what I love it. This is an explicit queer podcast. We can go there if we want.
em
03:40
This episode is you know there's the term sexually frustrating. This is volleyball frustrating of an episode for Hinata.
rainbow
03:48
Hinata's getting cucked over and over again.
em
03:51
All he can do is watch from the corner and catch balls.
rainbow
03:54
Like I, just our poor boy, but it's important for him. I think this episode is a really important experience and he needs this and maybe we're going to get into it. Yeah, take us away, all right. So we start at karasuno with Ukai telling the team that they were going to be working on their serves in the lead-up to nationals. He's like this is the one move, that is, like only one person can do this at a time. Yeah, and he talks about how they need to visualize that they're in a game when they're doing their serves, and I think this is where they show us like taping the net, right, they're like taping the top part of the net and so we can see that everyone else is going to be working on their serves um.
04:40
And Ukai says after this he like sends the team off, um, and daichi, you know. He like rallies the troops and he's like, come on, guys, um. And Ukai says after this he like sends the team off, and Daichi, you know he like rallies the troops and he's like, come on guys. And Ukai says that he has got to go meet up with one of his college senpai and in the dub he says old friend. But I like that. It's his college senpai, but don't worry, because he's got somebody named Tatsun. Tatsun, did you catch?
em
05:00
his name.
rainbow
05:06
Yeah, his name. Yeah, I think you're on to something in the manga. It's Takinoe. Maybe tatsun is takanoe's like first name or something, I don't remember anyway. But he says that somebody is gonna come and help out with practice I love that he has to pull in a volleyball.
05:13
Babysitter for Takeda yeah, because Takeda and like we'll see later, Takeda is such a good coach, um, in so many ways, but like he just doesn't have the volleyball skills. So Ukai's like like don't worry, babe, I got somebody coming to handle this, like you're not going to be alone. Also, Ukai went to college.
em
05:29
He just doesn't strike me as the college type. He was like a liberal major, maybe liberal arts major.
rainbow
05:35
Yeah, I'm like, what did you major in Like reading manga and smoking cigarettes in your family's job? I was going to say smoking cigarettes.
em
05:50
I think it was a double major. It was both reading manga and smoking cigarettes. Yeah, that just like really threw me off. I was like why? Also, really quick to go back to that part where he was talking about like visualizing. That is such a thing in anime that I've noticed and I think it is a really good practice. Like I was watching Naruto and I forget what her name is, the one with the paper and she was like I can't believe this didn't work. I ran the simulation in my head so many times and like that's just a good idea. I mean, that's like manifesting.
rainbow
06:11
Well, that is something that they tell people to do in sports. That's like something that you're supposed to do when you're thinking about, like, doing a certain move, like I think I've heard it explained with, like tennis players where, like tennis, when they're going to serve, they need to visualize doing the serve over and over again. It like prepares your mind, like our minds are actually really amazing.
em
06:31
They are.
rainbow
06:32
I don't know, I just I like that that's cool. I think so too. I mean I do that sometimes. If I need to like visualize something going the way I want it, I'll do that.
em
06:40
I gotta do that.
rainbow
06:45
Next time I fight a bitch and I'm sure there's something about the psychology of like your brain going through it over and over again and not like feeding into your muscles somehow, because the brain and the body are connected so yeah, very interesting, okay.
06:54
And then Takeda, as Ukai is on his way out, he's like wait, bae, I you said just that. You said, yeah, exactly that's how it was in the dub. I don't't know about the sub, no, just kidding. But he mentions that Grandpa Ukai is possibly coming to one of their practices, but Coach Ukai says that he's back in the hospital again. It's like not serious, but you know, like he's not going to be able to make it to practice. I think he's going to continue living for a while. Talk about a volleyball tease Also. I know, I know Poor, poor Emma's upset. But also in the dub, Takeda calls Grandpa Ukai Keishin's dad.
em
07:31
Oh, okay, well, they got things wrong.
rainbow
07:33
He's. I was like hang on. He was like I heard your dad is coming. I was like stop.
em
07:38
Wow.
rainbow
07:39
No, disrespectful, and I, and I did say that's an egregious error, but also we should start calling him daddy Ukai from now on instead of grandpa Ukai.
em
07:49
Granddaddy Ukai, no, daddy Ukai, we'll fight about it later.
rainbow
07:52
I'll run a simulation in my head I will too, and I'll win, you will, yeah. So I just that was like I was like season four, what are you doing? What is this? I was very angry. I was like I was like season four, what are you doing? What is this? I was very angry. I was like no, that's unacceptable Anyway, but Grandpa Ukai isn't going to make it, no, okay. So now we go over to Shiratorizawa and Washijo is having a talk with the first years at the training camp and saying that like yeah, you're used to playing each other in preliminary matches, but right now you're not opponents at this training camp. And he says specifically just the fact that you're doing something different will be a key stimulus, which I think is wild coming from Mr conservative conservative coaching style over here, and I think, whether or not Washijo wants to admit it, the match with Karasuno really did like shake up his worldview yeah, and I also think maybe I feel like his conservative ideology really comes from a place of fear and rejection.
em
08:51
I think that he like there's a part of him that absolutely embraces new things, but he's like, well, only the tall survive. I know that, and so he just like clings to that ideology as well.
rainbow
09:02
Well, I think I think there's kind of a parallel here with Washijo and Hinata, where I think they're both in this like time of change and transformation. But I think, like Washijo even more so than Hinata, they're still clinging to what they're used to. Like Hinata, like he's still, you know, he understands that's important to receive and serve and block, but he's still ultimately like I to spike, I'm a spiker, I want to get out there and I want to spike. And he's being forced to do other things. And Wasijo is like, there is part of him that's like hey, you know, maybe something new will be good, you know. He's like and and I'm sure losing to karasuno is part of that where he's like wow, the thing I've been doing over and over and over again finally failed. Maybe it is time for something new.
09:46
But, as we'll see throughout this episode, he's still not quite ready to let go of. Tall and strong is the best and the only way. It's not even just that, it's the best, it's the only way to be a volleyball player, unless you're a libro. So, um, still at the training camp, they're starting passing drills and Anabara has everyone introduced themselves to their partners. We have Kogane with Kunimi, and poor Kunimi does not have the energy for this boy, and I would honestly love I wish the manga had included like a little bit more about like what it was like for these two to work together, right. Um, and I kind of I always forget that Kunimi is actually like a really good volleyball player, like he's good enough to be invited to this camp, kunumi and Kindaichi.
em
10:28
Yeah, they're little stars.
rainbow
10:30
They are.
10:30
I mean, I think it makes sense that they're like well, I mean thinking about it, I think because of like everything that happens with them and Kageyama, it's like of course they're on Seijo and they're starters because that's good for, like, the narrative and for Kageyama's story, but thinking like within the world of Haikyuu, as volleyball players, like they are good enough to be starters on one of the powerhouse teams in Miyagi, like the second best team in Miyagi is Seijo and their first years, who are starters consistently, and I kind of just always forget.
10:57
And then also we have, like you know, the tone we get at the very beginning with them is Kageyama being like you're not fast enough, you're not good enough, right, and I think maybe that gets in me a little bit and I'm just like, well, they're not Kageyama and they're not Hinata and it's like no, but they're actually really fucking good, totally yeah, so, um, and then I don't think we get to see who Kindaichi is paired with, which is fine, but we do see that Tsukishima is paired with the guy with the swooshy bangs, whose name I don't know, who Em and I both thought might have been from Seijo as well which, again, I thought you didn't think this, but I thought it was um Yahaba Yahaba, which wouldn't make sense because he's not a first year, but he looks so much like him no, they do look a lot alike and maybe that's why I thought he was from Seijo.
11:37
Maybe I was like, oh, he looked like. Because he looks like that guy.
em
11:40
He's got the Seijo look of cuntness yeah, he does.
rainbow
11:43
Yeah, he looks like a pretty boy, um, who will tear you down verbally. Um, and then I, throughout the episode, I don't think we ever learn his name, but in the manga we learn that his name is junji kuroishi. Okay, um, I will be calling him swishy bangs for the rest of the episode. Um, and then we have goshiki with Hyakuzawa and I kind of wondered if because, like, goshiki kind of like looks over at him and I wonder if Goshiki is a little jealous of how tall he is, especially knowing that his volleyball daddy loves the big, tall guys. Oh for sure, that's probably why he picked him. Yeah, and then, honestly, for just like half a second, I was like do I ship them?
em
12:20
You can really ship anything, if you try hard enough.
rainbow
12:22
I mean, that's the beauty of fiction, Okay. So then Swishy Bangs, they get started on their receiving practice and Hinata is like doing his ball boy thing. And Swishy Bangs thinks about Hinata really is the odd one out. And we can see Hinata like watching everyone pair up with a very blank expression. He's like we're really. It's so interesting because like there's not a lot of stuff going on facially with him, but in his eyes you can really see the turmoil there.
12:50
Like I will say I think I have a note at the very end of the episode about this, but I'm gonna say it here. You know, for all the issues that this season has with animation, I think this episode, and particularly Hinata, this episode, I think they do a fucking great job. They really knew where they needed to put the focus of that money and that talent and I think it pays off. And I did kind of wonder if Hinata, watching all these guys play without him, if it reminded him of middle school, when he would be like watching the girls team practice and he had to just like wait. And we'll get into that a little bit later, I think in the second half we do.
em
13:24
This episode really does feel like Hinata is starting from scratch yeah, which I think that's like.
rainbow
13:30
That's interesting. Something they talk about on She-Ra is that growth is a spiral where you kind of have to learn these lessons over and over again, but at a higher level, and I think that's what's happening with Hinata yeah yeah, I really like that.
13:42
Thank you, um, jenny, from She-Ra. Um, hey, adora, the queer She-Ra podcast. Um, so then we have two second string Shiratorizawa, first years, who come up and they're also ball boys and they introduce themselves to Hinata and I think they don't like recognize him from side profile, which like how can you not that hair? But he turns to face them and he's like, oh, and he kind of like is like pulled out of a stupor for a second. He's like, oh, yeah, that's right, like I have a job to do and they're like whoa, it's Karasuno's number 10, because of course they were there.
14:10
They watched the game between them and I mean I can't remember exactly if they think like, oh, he's only a ball boy, or if they're just like whoa, I can't believe we're gonna be working with this guy.
em
14:19
Hinata is so intense here, like just the way he answers them. He really is kid in gym class taking this way too seriously.
rainbow
14:25
Vibes he really is. Well, because he is once again like he's coming at them with the energy of that like initial introduction at the end of last episode, where he's just like I'm, I'm gonna be the best ball boy there's just like he really is like like clogged up right now because there's so much determination, but he doesn't really know where to put it yet.
em
14:44
Like this episode really is him figuring out what the fuck am I doing here?
rainbow
14:47
it almost reminds me of like I'm. I have adhd and I get that like frozen thing where it's just like there's so much stimulus and there's so much going on, there's so much like potential wrapped up in him that he's almost like frozen and he can't do anything. Yeah, um, yeah. And then we have um. Hyakuzawa still sucks um, but we get like this nice moment of Wasijo, like showing him how to receive better and like turning his arms out and like really helping him learn um. But again, it's because he's big and tall and washi's joe's like this is the kind of volleyball player we should be nurturing, not that little fucking shrimp who wasn't even invited here.
em
15:25
And then Anabara calls for them to start spiking drills, yes, and Hinata, on instinct, runs over.
rainbow
15:32
He's like spiking yeah, he like activates, he like goes over, he like runs over there. But then Wasijo has to like stop him and be like you're going the wrong way. Ball boy, he's enjoying this, he, he is like he's. He's really getting a lot out of this and and our poor boy looks really upset.
15:49
For a second again in the eyes specifically, he like pauses and you can see in his head that like but I really want to go spike, but he does as he's told. And then we have Kogane still being an eager little beaver, um, because they're, you know, he and um, another setter, are the ones setting for all the spikers, and I think itsuki does a spike. And then Kogane is like how was that? Like, could it have been better? How can I improve? And Anabara mentions that he's still getting taller and he loves the idea of a giant setter yeah and I always forget that Kogane is like the giant setter, the big boned setter.
em
16:22
True, because I feel like his personality is so. I feel like every giant setter, the big boned setter true, because I feel like his personality is so. I feel like every other setter is pretty cool, collected more on like the logical side of things, and he is the one setter where we have a lot of emotion yeah, he's like a little puppy dog, yeah, and we're used to these like cool cats, exactly, yeah.
rainbow
16:40
And then Hinata is not doing a great job of being a ball boy. He's not exactly catching a lot of the balls. They're like a lot of them are getting past them and he's probably thinking about how much he wants to spike right now. And I mentioned that he's being very quiet, but it's not quite that intense, focused quiet we see at the end of matches. You know, like it's not that like I'm really in this and I'm like focused on the game. It's more of just like I think it. I wonder if there's part of him that's like why am I even here? Like why did I even stay? Why am I doing this ball boy thing?
em
17:13
Well, I think it would go back to what you said about the frozen thing. So I feel like he's like all right, I'm here and he wants to. Just, I think he's just like focusing on what's actually happening in the game and he's like there's just a war between, like, the old Hinata and the new Hinata that's trying to come through yeah, he's trying to hatch out of that egg.
rainbow
17:30
Yeah, yes, um, so then we do. That other setter not Kogane, we find out is a third year middle schooler who is very talented and that's why he was invited to this, and somebody I think one of the coaches mentions that he's not afraid to talk to the older players like he's not afraid to communicate with them, which is important, like I mean being like imagine being like an eighth grader and going to like high school conditioning and being like put up against these like older kids.
em
17:57
I can see how communication would be a huge issue for, like high school volleyball, these kids getting over, like in their awkward phases. Maybe they're shy or not, just not confident. You know that's a huge asset if you can open your mouth and be like was that okay?
rainbow
18:09
Yeah, absolutely. And then we have Hinata. It messes up something and Washijo yells at him and one of the Shiratorizawa ball boys thinks to himself that Hinata is getting yelled at more than anyone.
em
18:23
Which I immediately thought of how he was yelling at Koshiki during the game more than anyone. And it was who was it that said? Maybe I think it was Leon who said you know why, right it. And it was. Who was it that said maybe I think it was Leon who said you know why right, it's because he's counting on you the most. Yeah, I know that, like Washijo, yelling at you isn't necessarily just because you suck yeah, and I have some notes here later.
rainbow
18:42
I want to well, actually in like just a minute, I get into it and I really want to talk about why, what we think is going on with Washijo, how much of this is conscious, how much is subconscious. Like what's him like fighting against his old worldview kind of? He is also like Hinata. I feel like the old Wasijo is fighting to to keep that mindset in place and a new Wasijo is trying to push through, yeah, and they're both dealing with this tension. So we have two random coaches are in the gym and I think we've seen these coaches before. I think we've seen them like walking down the hallway at like a tournament and talking and I have no idea who the fuck they are or what school they're part of yeah, but they're, um, they say that, you know they.
19:20
It's kind of like shitty in the dub, where they're just like if he's not gonna get to practice, like he should just go home, yeah, um. But then one of them says something like oh, you know, like if he was on my team I'd train him to be a wing spiker, but Washijo would never do that, because Washijo still only likes the tall players. And then they mention that like oh, that kid's from Karasuno and they just beat Shiratorizawa, so could this be like revenge for for them beating them? And so I have a note here that the more I watch this, the more I think that Washijo knows being a ball boy is exactly what Hinata needs to become a more well-rounded player. But as I continued watching it, I was like but is that conscious or is that subconscious? Is it that new Washijo that's trying to grow? Seeing that? But the old Washijo being like but no, he doesn't deserve to learn how to play.
em
20:08
I feel like Washijo feels about Hinata very similar to how, especially early, Kageyama feels Like he knows that there is potential but there's a lot of suckiness, so like he's very like he's not going to be very nice about it and I think he's more willing to believe that it won't go anywhere. But he's like all right, you beat me, you've got some skill, let's see what you got, kind of thing. And I think it's funny because the one coach says well, he wouldn't be that petty, and I agree, like I think that it is because he thinks that this is what Hinata needs. But if, maybe, if he gets a little enjoyment out of it, that's like a little bonus yeah, because I think it's not even like revenge for Karasuno beating Chirators.
rainbow
20:45
I feel like for him that's just like oh well, you know, that's like teams beat other teams. It happens my team has lost before. They've definitely like lost in nationals, but I think, specifically Hinata, it's specifically Hinata. It's like Hinata got the last shot, like Hinata was the one like kind of like shaking up um so many things and I think that, specifically, is what pissed him off. So then we move on to a sad montage of Hinata having to watch Spiker after Spiker after Spiker Volleyball cookery and also what fucks me up, especially with these like middle school kids.
em
21:17
It's just like such a reminder that these are all the opportunities that Hinata never got, and it's like not Hinata's, it's not really Hinata's fault that he sucks. He didn't have opportunities, he did the best he could, you motherfuckers.
rainbow
21:28
Yeah, he literally did not have a coach in middle school. He had no one to guide him. It was literally just him flailing around trying to do and like not knowing, like not having the basis of knowing, like, oh, I need to be learning all these skills, but just being like spiking feels good and I want to spike and like. So that's what he focused on. And you know, all these like assholes come in who, like have all this privilege and are like why aren't you better anyway? Um, so then we get to the end of this day of practice and everyone is tired and they're going home and Hinata is doing a setting drill against the wall and Kindaichi is watching him with a frown. And even when Kunami like walks up and is like all right time to go home, Kindaichi still like looks back at him and he thinks that little runt in middle school he had newbie written all over him, but not anymore. He must have spent a lot of time on the court. Which, honey, you've played him? You know that he has like what are you?
em
22:21
talking about Kindaichi, I know, but maybe that just shows how much growth has happened between that game and now.
rainbow
22:28
Yeah, that's true. And then we have he. So, now that the court's cleared off and Hinata tries to do a little jump serve and he fails, and he thinks about how difficult it is. And he also thinks about how this is the first time he's ever been a ball boy. And he flashes back to what Kageyama said after their first game of like, what have you been doing the last three years? And he has a lot of flashes of like. It's clear that this is like the culmination of all the thoughts he's been having in his head all day of like the other first years going on ahead of him, of Ushijima saying that, like you know, he'll beat them next time. Of Kageyama's I'll see you from the top. And there's um the symbolism which is very reminiscent of first year Daichi, where Hinata is running but the, those vines are coming out and they're holding him in place there's so many parallel parallels between him and daichi.
23:14
It's insane this season specifically, yeah, is very much the like hey, see these two, see these two, they've got some stuff in common, yeah. And then, um, Tsukishima snaps Hinata out of it saying they need to go home. Yeah, this scene is so ridiculous because suki mentions that, um, they don't get an excused absence like kagiyama, so I guess they I guess they're not on school break no, they must do this camp like after school yeah, after school, or like maybe this was a weekend day, maybe you know, yeah, so, um, so they have to go.
23:46
And then Hinata tries to apologize to Tsukishima and Tsukishima shuts him down in the bitchiest, most vicious way possible. He is mocking him for like oh, I bet you really want to spike. Like oh, come on, ball boy. It's like Tsukishima like is this, is this a tsundere moment where you have to pretend you don't like him? Like the Tsukihina in this first part of the season is ridiculous.
em
24:11
Let me say, in the manga, after he rips Hinata apart like this, there's a little thing where it says feels better, like I think he was so like it that just made him feel better about Hinata embarrassing him. And he also says something which I think is probably another thing, that is like driving Hinata crazy, where it's like make sure you don't waste, like these five days of practice before the tourney. You know he really has to make the most of this, but it's like but what of filling up water bottles?
rainbow
24:38
like it's just such a frustrating spot for him to be in yeah, yeah, I think that's part of it is like because I think Tsukishima, like he like didn't even really want to go to this training camp because he was like we've got to train for nationals and and like Daichi was just like no bitch, you're going, this is part of training for nationals. And so I think for Tsukishima because, yeah, I think he was like embarrassed by Hinata, I think he's like pissed that he was being so stupid and like I think part of him because he cares now is like hey, we need you to be in your best and like right now, all you're doing is like seemingly wasting your time, but he's just such a bitch about it. I really love it because he gets that like smug Tsukishima smirk on his face and like the animation goes all like dark and like I just love it he's in his element of tearing another person down.
25:22
He really and I think Hinata is one of his favorite people to tear down oh, yeah, yeah. And so then we cut to the coaches. We have Anabara and Washijo, and Anabara nervously brings up Hinata like he's like he's got a little like sweat on his face and he's like not looking at Wasijo and he's like so that he had to kid, like he stayed till the very end. He had a volleyball in his hand, till the very end, you know. And Wasijo says I don't mind kids who are a little reckless. But then he goes on to say how he won't let hina to practice with the others, no matter how much grit or determination he has.
em
25:52
Well, I feel like Anabara is kind of, without saying it, trying to be like. I feel like this kid's kind of earned a spot, like why don't you let him? And like the coaches have been thinking and everyone's kind of thinking like just let him play. And Washijo knows that. And he's like no, because that's not what Hinata needs. He needs to start from the basics. He a ball boy three years ago. She should have been working on receives years ago.
rainbow
26:15
But well, we'll get all into it. But yeah, yes, yeah, we'll get into all of that. But yeah, so, and I just think it's so interesting, like the Anabara Washijo thing is so funny when it comes to Hinata, like I can't wait till we get to like later in the season. There's some stuff with them that's fun. But but yeah, I think it's interesting that Anabara is just kind of like because again, he had recommended Hinata for the um, the training camp, but but Wasijo said no, and now he's like, hey, man, like what is it? What does this kid have to do to prove to you that he deserves to be here? And I think for Wasijo there's nothing right now. There's nothing he could Hinata could do to prove that. Yeah, so then right before our commercial break we get a lovely little scene. We get Tendo skipping down the hallway singing. He goes to Ushijima's room and he's like I'm here to pick up my issue of Shonen Jump that I lent you, but Ushijima is still reading the ad.
em
27:04
He's like I'm still reading gets rid of unnecessary hair and Tendo's like read the manga.
rainbow
27:11
What if you read the manga but he won't? He reads the ads and it's just so silly and it's cute and I really love them. They're so adorable. I love them like trading manga back and forth, and I bet Ushijima's like oh, it looks like the pork is on sale at the grocery store this week.
em
27:28
Would love to have a book club with Ushijima and see what his takeaways are in fiction store this week.
rainbow
27:32
would love to have a book club with ushi jima and see what his takeaways are in fiction. Oh my god, that's what. That's the ushi 10 podcast right there, the most literal fucking takes. I love him. But then it ends with Tendo asking ushi jima if he's going to help out at the first year's training camp tomorrow. And ushi jima says yes and I said I bet that is the end of a manga chapter. Was I right or was I? You're so right? Yes, I bet that is the end of a manga chapter.
27:54
Was I right or was I wrong? You're so right. Yes, I was like that is giving cliffhanger, ending all like it's written all over it. Yes, all right. So then we go to our commercial break.
em
28:03
This was still all day one, by the way. So now it's the next day and Hinata is at Ukai's market and Ukai asks him a very fair question. Let me ask you a very fair question.
rainbow
28:15
What do you do successfully Quickly.
em
28:19
Did you really think they'd let you in? And Hinata, this is the day of getting scolded for Hinata. And he really, like I can feel the dissociation all over his face. But he says to Ukai like everyone is just so far ahead of him that he has to do something. And Ukai even like kind of gets that. And he tells him you know, don't underestimate what it takes to be a ball boy Like there's something to learn from this position.
rainbow
28:43
In the dub. Specifically, he says figure out what you can do there that you can't do anywhere else.
em
28:53
Yes, exactly. And we have a flashback of him stopping by Shiratorizawa as he said he would talking to Anabara and he's shocked that Washijo is really letting him stay. And he probably figures like okay, there's a purpose for you here and they'll say this later, but not for nothing. Like without Kageyama, what are you going to work on your serves Anyway? So, and I also noted like Hinata takes all of these scoldings, but he's not sorry.
rainbow
29:12
And he would do it again. He would, yeah, he would do it over and over again. He would have, he would break into the Tokyo training camp if he didn't have to worry about getting arrested.
em
29:21
And you said that cool thing about the spirals and learning something. I mean this really reminds me of like when Hinata had to pull back and relearn how to do the quick with his eyes open.
rainbow
29:36
It might feel like a waste of time in the moment, but it's very necessary, well, and it's interesting you say that because it was kind of it was Kageyama thinking it was a waste at that time it was. Hinata pushing forward, and now it's Hinata's turn to be told no, you need to start learning again from the beginning, which I think transitions into his next scolding.
em
29:49
Yes. So now it's Takeda's turn and he's in like the teacher's lounge office and we have the vice principal nervously like looking on and Takeda lays out exactly why Hinata needs to be doing this and he says he who climbs the ladder must begin at the bottom Because, like, just I think this, this fucking arc, is so smart and so necessary because Hinata came in with like so little experience and the only reason he's gotten this far, the only reason he's a starter, is because he has this magical connection with Kageyama. And it's easy, I think, to forget, even though we get reminded all the time that he technically sucks, but we see him pulling off these crazy moves all the time. But I think by removing Kageyama from the situation too, it's just like really clear of where he really is skill-wise. And Takeda lays it out perfectly and he says to become good at something, you must follow the proper steps.
30:41
Again, you can't just jump in as a starter because you're really athletic and fast, you've got to learn it's building blocks and this is really great, just for anyone who has like a big kind of lofty dream that takes a lot of skill. Like you don't become an overnight. Excess Success stories are not actually overnight. These people have been working for years and years and years.
rainbow
31:00
Yeah, and I wanted to just shout out all of the people, um, who wrote in for our anniversary episode and said that this line was so inspiring for them, because I agree, I think this is like one of my favorite lines from Haikyuu. Like I would get, I would get a poster of this on the wall. Like I would have I would get this embroidered in a pillow, like I love it. And I will say I think Takeda's English VA does such a good job with this moment with Hinata, like I think his English VA is. Just he has this like softness to his voice that I really enjoy and it like it really fits Takeda very well. I think the casting for him was great and, yeah, and I just I think it's just such a good moment and I love it so much.
em
31:40
It's just, Hinata has always wanted to just get in there and start spiking, but if he's serious about being a great volleyball player, he has so much more to learn, something that Kageyama has been knowing since day one. Just if he could hear all this, he'd be like yeah. He's like that's what I've been trying to say, but I'm bad with words, and so, despite what Ukai kind of was saying before about, how he was really going to give him a lecture.
rainbow
32:09
Neither him or Takeda really yell at Hinata. That's Daichi's job. Because okay, because Hinata comes out of the talk with Takeda like kind of like woozy, yes, yes, and then Tanaka-senpai comes up to just really like rub salt in the wounds yeah, really.
em
32:19
And he's like this is just like you're getting scolded today Like how about Daichi and Hinata's? Like? He got me first thing in the morning and I love the third year dynamic because Daichi is just yelling at Hinata and it's true, like you know, you've got to think about how your actions affect others. Asahi is just like standing in the background with his hands out, like take it easy, daddy.
rainbow
32:49
And then Suga has that face that he saves for when daichi is yelling at people and it kind of amuses him. And after daichi scolds him, suga's like good job, Hinata, and daichi's like suga. Also, I just want to say in the dub um, they have so like suga's wearing a t-shirt with words on it and it says potato apparently, and I just I love the idea that suga just wears the most off the wall.
em
33:02
Fucking shit.
rainbow
33:04
It fits, I think yeah, yeah and yeah and like just Hinata getting three different scoldings and then, real quick, I wanted to go back to what you were saying about Kageyama and like Kageyama not being there, this happens. This is a pattern with them where they come together, something like there's like a charged thing going on, and then they separate and then they come back and they're like and they, they come back and they're like and they've trained and they've grown, and then they can like they're it's more more of them working together, and then they go apart to train separately and then they come back and they're better than ever and that continues.
em
33:34
Yes, so Tanaka gives no scolding and actually I've never really put such a microscope to this moment before, but um, he, his like he is still being kind of a senpai and he has words for Hinata and he says, well, you do suck, so make sure you learn a special move or something you don't get to play with other players a lot, which I think also in the manga really illustrated this, because he says this and Hinata thinks about how he is not playing, though he's watching them. So, like that frustration comes back up where it's like I have this opportunity, but do I?
rainbow
34:06
well, in this whole, the second half of this episode, is everyone telling Hinata that he should use this opportunity to learn all of them in different ways like with the exception of Daichi who's yelling at him, but like and I think that's when Tanaka comes in like he has both of his coaches and one of his senpai being like hey, hey, you can learn stuff here.
em
34:23
And Tanaka says, hey, don't panic so much. And this is the first time where we see like emotion from Hinata. He starts to tear up and I think his and he says sorry, and I think it actually does sound regretful. I think having this show of genuine support and also truth from Tanaka and everyone all day about how he has a long way to go something he's painfully aware of it's catching up to him and I'm sure he does feel bad about inconveniencing his teammates as well.
rainbow
34:51
Well, yeah, because Hinata is like he is a sweet boy at the end of the day and like he does, like he does, there is like a certain amount of like he wants to show respect and he does want to do things like in, like kind of a proper way, but like kind of a proper way, but there's. That only goes so far. This is why what did we? Did? We say he was a chaotic, neutral.
em
35:06
Yeah, yeah, he'll do whatever it takes. Though. Yes, yeah, absolutely, and that takes precedence. And, thankfully, just as the tears start, here comes good old Uncle Noya to break him out of that funk. He's like very excited and Hinata kind of becomes himself again and talks about the giant player that's there and I love the way I love in the, the sub, the way noia goes.
35:27
Show you, I know it's so cute tananoia are so important to me and to Hinata. So then, back at the training camp, Hinata is playing against the wall again and that's where I wanted to kind of add on to your point, where it really does feel like we're back to square one playing with himself. Pause, just like having to like watch and stuff. And today's day two, Hinata, I noted, looks a little less like he's gonna vibrate out of his skin, but like he's almost even more focused. He has to figure out, like, what he's there to do. Being a ball boy is kind of perfect practice for Hinata, because he needs to keep an eye on the ball and receive it in a way, and that's something that he seriously needs to work on. And then, as he's doing that, goshiki actually beats him to getting one of the balls just to be like ha ha, I'm better than you.
rainbow
36:15
And actually in the manga it says I'm better than you in a thought bubble With like yeah, with a smug little like shit eating grin on his face. But again, Hinata is always just impressed.
em
36:24
He's like that was cool. I gotta learn how to do that yeah, I'm angry on Hinata's behalf. He'll never he's always like I, just again like. One of my favorite things about Hinata is how he looks at challenges where most people would be like fuck you. He'd be like that was cool. How can I be like you?
rainbow
36:38
yes, absolutely. And I want to say right before that, because Goshiki, like, is walking over after he's just done one of his spikes, because they're doing spike practicing and Washijo is telling Goshki that the way he positions his body gives too much away. And I thought that was very important to note.
em
36:54
All this great teachings that Hinata just has to hopefully eavesdrop in on. And so now here comes the Shiratorizawa third years.
rainbow
37:04
Well, right before that, there's another middle schooler at the training camp.
em
37:09
I did have that written down, but I just said again like this is all the opportunity that Hinata never got in middle school, yeah. So then the third years come in and Kunimi makes like a noise, like he just does not seem excited about this opportunity. Well, he's going to have to work hard, exactly, and he's going to have to work hard, exactly.
rainbow
37:25
And he's played against Shira Torizawa before and I'm sure he hated it.
em
37:29
Oh my God, Him and Kenma are soulmates and they need to hang out.
rainbow
37:33
Honestly. And we have Tendo, oh my God, first of all, Tendo's back. Everybody, did you think we were?
em
37:38
done with him after season three? No, we're not. And he's always standing with his hands behind his head like a cool guy. And we have Hinata who stands like a little gremlin in the back, so pumped that again. You would think another person would be like, oh, fuck Ushiwaka. But he's like oh, my god, we get to practice with Ushiwaka and Tendo spots Hinata and loudly calls him out. He's like I'm gonna stuff you next this time, baby.
38:00
And then the little Shiratorizawa, like first years or middle schoolers who are also ball boys. They're like oh, we gotta go get water. He's like, okay. And then he like bows to Ushiwaka and Tendo, who are very confused about why he's being a little ball boy. And this is like people are always like. The ball boy arc is so embarrassing Whatever Get grown. But this is, I think, the most embarrassing part is to have to in front of people that you defeated and now you gotta go fetch the water, literally in the dub, Tendo says yikes yep, that is, that is the mood in the moment it's just, it is like it's so awkward.
rainbow
38:32
And I I do really love though I love that Tendo like sees him and is just like. He's like I'm gonna, I'm gonna beat you, I'm gonna beat you, little kid. I just love that he likes, I just love Tendo so much yeah, no, he's really fun.
em
38:45
Um so, after this humiliation ritual uh, Hinata, it's just so torturous he is doing the scoreboard and like just there's so much intent. Like, oh my god, this is like his worst nightmare just having to watch strong players play. I mean, the flashbacks from middle school have to be strong yeah, well, and we have.
rainbow
39:04
Well, you know, while he's watching them play, we have another like, just because I have to shout out Tendo again. We have a moment where I think it's that middle schooler kid is like going to do something and like Tendo's able to block him and like, on the other side of the net, Tendo is like giving him advice. He's such a good fucking senpai like I love Tendo well, that's the reason're there.
em
39:23
It's such a big learning experience for almost everybody.
rainbow
39:26
And I just like it's this, there's this like view of Tendo. I feel like from the outside that like he's this guest monster, he's terrible, he's going to like eat your soul, blah, blah, blah. It's actually like I mean, when yeah, when he's an opponent, he's going to do what he can to shake you up, but if he's not your opponent, he is going to help you in whatever way he can.
em
39:42
He's just a fun, eccentric kind of guy, he's a good boy. And so Tendo, after this game he finds Hinata at the scoreboard and is like, leaning his chin on the scoreboard. He's like so what's going on? He's asking him, like why isn't he playing? And Hinata is like I'm a ball boy. And Tendo's like well, why? And Ushiwaka, who was, I guess, standing nearby this entire time, he's like did you hear that? And Ushiwaka, very bluntly, not trying to be mean, but like I think just that dressed down honesty of just being like so what are you even doing? Because, again, it's like right now you're really just fetching water and doing scoreboards. So like what are you actually getting out of this? And like that's exactly what's driving Hinata crazy right now.
rainbow
40:25
Yeah.
40:25
I have, I have a couple of things here. First of all, the way that Tendo is standing at the scoreboard is so interesting. He's got like his chin on it but also, like you notice, he's got like one of his legs like lifted up. It's like like crossed at the knee, like he's like squatting. It's so weird he's.
40:41
I think he just has such a gangly body. There's so many different things he can do with it. He's standing like a gay person. Well, that's yeah, he is, he's very gay. Also, just now, when you were talking about Ushijima, just like kind of being there, I like to imagine that Ushijima, like when they're not playing volleyball, he just kind of like follows Tendo around a little bit from the from behind and he just like goes where Tendo goes because he's like well, we're not on the court right now, so I'll just stick close to my buddy because, literally, like that is what it's giving, because he's just kind of standing in the shadows it's just yeah, he's always just like right there with Tendo, um kind of like, I think, how Kageyama is with Hinata.
41:19
It's like he's like. He's the like extreme autistic introvert who needs to like be attached to his little extrovert boyfriend.
em
41:26
And it's so interesting watching Hinata and Tendo interact, these two weirdo gingers. Yes, you know.
rainbow
41:32
I love it. There's a fic out there I think I've talked about it before where Hinata goes to another school and there's a lot of stuff with him and Tendo that I really love. He doesn't go to Shiratorizawa.
em
41:52
He goes to another school where he's able to like face Shiratorizawa. Back at the farm, uh, back at karasuno, we have nishinoya double thunder rolling into Tanaka. They're just being you can't. Yells at both of them and Tanaka's like why am I getting yelled at?
rainbow
42:00
also so m while she was watching this in the sub, I was there and the. And the moment in the sub like Tanaka gets like falls over, and in the sub Suga's like, so concerned, like oh no Tanaka. In the dub he's like laughing, he's like ha ha, Tanaka got ran over.
em
42:14
Again, just taking liberties with the tone.
rainbow
42:17
So yeah, they're like doing surf practice and we just hear Noe in the background telling Asahi to shake it off. Noe calls out. He's like out, but shake it off.
em
42:27
Asahi. He's always talking to Asahi. Yeah, in the sub I did hear him say don't mind. So Ukai is frowning at the court and Takeda comes up and says what's wrong, bae? And Ukai says in order to win the upcoming tournaments, we can't lose any of our players, which side note that in itself is kind of a problem for them right now. They're still so small and underdog that they really can't like. Every time Daichi gets hurt or Tsukki breaks a fingy, like it's like bad for them. And he goes on to say, including Hinata, and because of that we've been limiting him.
42:58
This is a good coach. Right here, like I think about that coach from earlier on the sidelines saying, oh, I would train him as a wingspiker, like just thinking about how he can contribute to the team but not thinking about how they can grow Hinata just as a player. And it's so true because if Hinata didn't have this volleyball superpower, if he didn't have this connection with Kageyama, he would have started out a lot slower, second string, focusing on his technical skills, but instead, instead, he had this magical bond with an excellent setter. So he's been thrown in from the jump doing these very specific moves, which is why he still, overall, sucks. In this way, they've kind of failed Hinata without meaning to.
43:34
Oh. But Takeda brings a new, another perspective of like yes, but without doing it like this, you know, they wouldn't have been able to polish their best weapon. So it's not all negative, in a sense. And he goes on to say that Hinata knows this better than anyone, that he has a mountain of stuff to work on, and so he is probably panicking a bit, and he says if we can always present the correct answer to them, we should, but the best thing we can do is make sure that they don't stop thinking and to make sure they keep searching for what's best for them.
44:01
Again, I think this is very smart. There's nothing anyone could do now about the fact that Hinata didn't have opportunities in middle school and that you know he had to grow in this certain way with Karasuno to get as far as they have and the ways that they have failed him for the greater good of the team. But what's really important is teaching Hinata to not give up because of that and just keep figuring out what works best for him. The baby crow must learn to fly on his own at the end.
rainbow
44:23
Yeah, and my note here is just that Takeda is coach of the year every year.
em
44:27
Like he's just amazing, I feel like it's such a great team because Ukai has all the volleyball parts but Takeda has, like, the human part and not every coach is going to have that.
rainbow
44:38
And I wanted to say a little note, something I noticed while I was watching this the way they're standing is so opposites kind of, because Ukai is standing with like his arms crossed over his chest, which feels very Ukai, and then Takeda is standing very politely with his hands clasped behind his back and it just feels like that's like I don't know. I just like that they complement each other. Also, I think Takeda is always wearing green and Ukai is always wearing red, and I just love them, love it yeah, they, yeah, they bring, they both bring something really important to the table, yes.
em
45:08
And then we get to Hinata's emo moment in the supply closet. And then why this episode is titled Lost. You know he thinks to himself what the heck am I doing? Hinata knows that this is where he needs to be, but he just hasn't quite figured out, like, how to make this step work for him, how to not waste any more time, even with a seemingly limiting role like a ball boy, and I think you have a note like he thinks specifically about Ushijima and then Kageyama, yes, which they're both so similar and like, are both, I think, some of his ultimate, like rival challenges in this. Um, and he thinks to himself, find it, think I need to change my perspective, to think about what it is that only I can do here. And we get this really cool, like you said earlier, really great animation moment of Peanut, like he pulls himself out of. He stuck his head in a stack of mattresses and Koshki saw this, by the way, and was like what the fuck?
rainbow
45:59
and then he pulls out and he takes like this deep breath in and out and he's like ultimate focus boy and he comes back out of the supply closet, looking determined as fuck, and that's the end of the episode yeah, and I want to say, while Hinata is having that find it, find it moment he's having all these different flashes and he flashes back to what washi just said at the beginning of the episode about how doing something different is the stimulus you need, and I think that's so important. I'm so fucking excited to talk about the next couple of episodes. This is a very like concept, heavy ideology, heavy episode.
em
46:35
Yes and no Kageyama.
rainbow
46:37
No, only in flashbacks. It's fine, you know well, you know he's off just having a great time at his training camp.
em
46:45
With all the hot boys. Okay, now it's time for manga versus anime. Yes, tell us about it. This covers chapters 210 to about the beginning of 212. Just a few notes. So when Kindaichi is watching Hinata in the manga, he thinks about Kageyama. If he's not here then he must be there, meaning the Tokyo training camp. I said. Even the anime is toning down kendai chi's obsession. And then then they, after that they cut to the training center, which isn't in this episode, but it's actually the scene from last episode where they're meeting the coaches. And when we see hoshi umi, Kageyama looks at him and thinks how he's only a little taller than Hinata. I wonder if he's's a Libro. I've never seen him before. First of all, you have Hinata's height memorized.
rainbow
47:27
He is never not thinking about Hinata Shoyo. Yep, he has not stopped thinking about Hinata Shoyo since their first match in middle school, since the first time he saw, since he saw him in front of the bathroom and Hinata said I'm going to be the one that stands on the court the longest he has lived rent free in a large portion of Kageyama's mind, because there's a lot of room in there.
em
47:47
Yeah, really and then I'm fucking. I wish this had made its way into the anime, but the end of like 2, 11 if you have a little side panel called I tried that too and it goes back to goshiki seeing Hinata stick his head in the mattresses. And then it's like after the practice game, koshiki goes and tries it himself. He sticks his head in mattresses to see like what. And he's just like what, what?
rainbow
48:08
is he doing? What is this? I'm looking at it right now because you put it in the notes and it's so funny. He like sticks his head and he's got a question mark and then he pulls himself out and then it's like a question mark, explanation, exclamation mark where he's like what the fuck is that?
em
48:20
supposed to do. It just says so much by showing so little. Oh my god. And I love that. I love that Hinata still has like, yes, he's being this ball boy and he's on the sidelines, but like everyone still has an eye on him and they're trying to do what he's doing. Hinata, claim your power. All right, that's enough from me. It's time for our character spotlight.
rainbow
48:40
And did I struggle figuring this out.
em
48:44
Oh, but this is a smart one.
rainbow
48:45
Yeah, I was glad I picked it. I finally landed on Anabara the coach because I was like I was like, well, we've already. I was like going into it. I thought that we saw more from the Tokyo training camp. So I was like, oh, I can pick like one of our three kind of like new players we meet there. No, not a single training, not a single Tokyo training camp member in sight. And I was like we've already talked about, like all of the other people that I could talk about, but Anabara we haven't covered. So Anabara Takaki, and I will say off the top, no character sheet from him, but I pulled a little bit of trivia so it might be a smaller section. And also, he really gets the Narita treatment and gets two lines for his personality. From the wiki Anabara appears to be a calm, lenient person. He allows his team to run its own practice and was initially accepting towards Hinata's participation in the summer camp.
em
49:34
Well, I mean, think about who this guy is. He's the captain of Jozenji, which are those yellow bastards that were just like punk kids, doing whatever they want, like almost the opposite of Shiratorizawa, personality-wise, wise and it's very interesting that Anabara and Wasijo would come together to do this, and we'll talk about why.
rainbow
49:52
I think that happened in the trivia. Okay, um so, but first I want to get into his family. His name meaning um. His family name, Anabara means original hole and, yes, that's really what it means. I looked it up and everything. I looked up the kanji specifically because I was like no, it doesn't mean original whole, pause, what are you talking about? But then also, when I looked up the kanji, it said it was pronounced anahara instead of Anabara, which I think is interesting because ha and ba, like the, the hall with the little lines makes it ba, right, yes. So I thought that was interesting and I wonder why. I wonder if that's just a translation thing. Is his name supposed to be anahara or does it sound like they're saying Anabara in the sub? Well, now I have to pay attention, yeah, pay attention more and see what it has anyway. So, yeah, original whole, an Original hole, Anabara, um, just yeah. And then his given name is Takaki, which means both um, filial, piety. Is that how you pronounce that word? I've never seen piety it's like familial.
50:59
I think it's like piety towards, like your family oh and like, maybe specifically like that, the the hierarchy of the family, and then it also means clear okay, a clear original whole.
em
51:11
I just what I mean I just, I don't know, just being so immature, you guys yeah, I mean it probably.
rainbow
51:18
Yeah, it's, it's probably just like a name that furudate, like picked out of nowhere, but it's like really, really, um, okay, and then from the trivia, um, also from the wiki, it is implied that anna barrow went to the same school as shira torozawa's current coach, akira saito. So akira saito that's like the the secondary coach, oh, right, right, right. So they went to school together, which I was like that's the only way I can imagine this came together with Wasijo and Anabara, because, yeah, jozenji is not like a powerhouse, but they are like changing, and that's what I think is so interesting is that Wasijo is like finally starting to change his views and I think that's probably why Anabara is part of this, because Anabara is like we're completely breaking this team down and we're starting something new, like this team is not going to be the same as it used to be.
52:06
Interesting. So yeah, and that's cool. And I just think it's interesting that Anabara comes back because, like when we meet him in season two with as the Jozenji coach, it's just like, oh, we'll probably never see this guy again, but then he becomes pretty important, especially because it's really more about their manager than him ever.
em
52:22
So yeah, I know, especially when I first watched this, I don't think I made the connection at all to who this guy was. I was like, yep, another coach.
rainbow
52:28
Yeah, I mean yeah, honestly, it could have taken me like a couple times watching it to realize what was going on. Yeah, and maybe that's why there's so much focus on the manager when we are in the joe's ng thing because they like food. I already knew he was going to use Anabara later on, so it's like we give him a little bit here to introduce him and then later we'll get to learn a little bit more about him okay, it's time for the world's favorite game.
em
52:51
It's who? And haikyuu. This week's scenario is brought to you by my special brain Because this episode has such like first day of school vibes. We are going to talk about what would their first day of school be like, and today we're going to cover Hinata, Kageyama, Tsukishima, Kendaichi, Kunimi, Kogane, Goshiki, Ukai and Takeda.
rainbow
53:11
And if we want to throw anyone else in there, we can.
em
53:13
Yes, I think Hinata, it'd be interesting. He could potentially get bullied for being a little ginger. I was once the new kid in school with a queen's accent and ginger hair and crooked teeth and I didn't make friends I just I saw the light go out in your eyes for a second when you thought back to that time.
rainbow
53:34
It makes me sad.
em
53:35
I, if I could go back in time and beat up all those little third graders, I would third grade was hard, but Hinata is not me and I think that it would only take him like a week to really get a bunch of new friends. But maybe that first day would be a little awkward for him I think it'd be a little awkward.
rainbow
53:54
He'd be very nervous and scared, but once he got to gym class, yeah, and showed off, well, that's the thing. I think that the like the school bully would try to bully him on the first day and it just like wouldn't work because it's Hinata, he could just run, yeah, and then Kageyama kind of a different, I think almost the opposite where, like I think, kids would be like, oh, who's that mysterious cute guy?
em
54:17
but you know, inside there's just a volleyball in his head and he like falls asleep in class and yeah, everyone thinks like all the girls are like, oh, he's the new guy.
rainbow
54:25
Like, oh, he's so mysterious. What is he thinking? Probably deep, dark thoughts. Maybe he writes poetry, blah, blah, blah, but it's like no, he's thinking about when he's gonna get his next meal yeah, when is he gonna get yogurt? When is he getting his probiotic yogurt? Um, and when is he gonna get to play volleyball?
em
54:42
yeah, yeah skishma uh is absolutely unrattled. Guard up. I think kids are probably intimidated because he's so tall and like really unaffected by any attempts to like bully him.
rainbow
54:55
Yeah yeah, and I think and I I don't see him getting bullied as much because he's got that like tall, cool guy thing going for him.
em
55:01
I don't think he's an easy target just any kind of bullying that would like inherently come with being the new kid.
rainbow
55:07
Yeah and you know I will say I think I have never been the new kid like this. Yeah, you said in the same like school system, yeah, I was with the same kids over and over again. I've never experienced that.
em
55:18
So yeah, you're fucking lucky because, like I don't even know, the older you get, I feel like the harder it is to integrate and like even like I moved between second and third grade and like I went from having my like group of friends because the friends really solidify pretty early on, and so to go into a new, whole new ecosystem that you're not a part of is tricky With those upstate New York kids, ken Daichi, you get bullied for being an onion head.
rainbow
55:47
He would, I think he would. I think he would want to like, I think he'd like pretend to be like a tough, cool guy, but he would be like definitely be rattled by like every moment where he isn't like immediately accepted.
em
56:01
Yeah, for sure, I think Kindaichi is like a normal enough kid that he'd find his place pretty easily.
rainbow
56:06
Yeah Kunimi, like nothing faces him, like people like barely even notice that he's new.
em
56:13
They were like oh that kid, he's always been there right yeah, yeah, maybe people would think he's weird because he would be like not friendly, probably shy Again, like he really reminds me of Kenma.
rainbow
56:23
It's really hard for me to like separate Kindaichi and Kunimi Like I just imagine them being the new kids together. I love, oh, like then they're both the new kids and they both end up sitting together at lunch.
em
56:34
They would. I remember again when I was the new kid I like went into the guidance counselor's office with other new kids and they're like you know, we all like talked and whatnot. So they would. They would have that moment too and maybe stick together a little bit.
rainbow
56:47
Maybe a little besties. Kogane would immediately try to make friends with every single person he came in contact with.
em
56:52
Yes, I feel like you don't even get a chance to try and bully Kogane, because he's just so friendly and so he's like asking everybody for their emails and phone numbers right away, and some kids will be put off by it, but he would definitely attract a lot of kids with that attitude.
rainbow
57:06
Yeah, like by recess he has a group of kids to play with. Yeah, Goshiki.
em
57:13
Well, what does his haircut look like?
rainbow
57:16
He's definitely getting bullied for that. Yeah, somebody is calling him Rock Lee, I think, yeah.
em
57:21
Again, I think he would really find his stride once he got to like the sports team or gym class or something.
rainbow
57:27
Yeah, he definitely wants the like other like sports bros realize that he's one of them. They'd be like, okay, cool. I think he's like a bit of a try hard though.
em
57:35
Yeah, for sure I think that gets in his way. Ukai would be. I think he'd get a rep right away from being like dangerous because of his dyed hair and smoking cigarettes between classes and like he'd probably fall in with maybe the more punky crowd, but like he's really not that bad.
rainbow
57:50
Yeah, he's kind of a good kid. Yeah. And then Takeda yeah, he's just like the new nerdy kid. I then Takeda yeah, he's just like the new nerdy kid. I'm sure he gets accepted by, like I'm thinking, mean girls, like the mathletes would immediately be like do you want?
em
58:03
to join.
rainbow
58:03
Yes, yeah, so soft and then I didn't write them down. But I do want to think about Ushijima and Tendo oh, my god, I think again like Ushijima.
em
58:10
I think would be a similar Kageyama experience, like people, because Ushijima is also handsome, I think, and I think girls would be interested and people would be like, oh, he's so mysterious and like scary. Where again there's nothing going on in his brain.
rainbow
58:24
Yeah, he is. It's just they would come up to him and they'd be like what are you thinking about, Ushijima? And he'd be like soap is two for one.
em
58:46
I'm fucking dead. And then Tendo. Tendo would be my experience, but worse. I mean, we kind of see that in his flashbacks. I mean he's not the new kid, but I think people would be like what the fuck is this weirdo?
rainbow
58:51
he looks a little scary I think and I think he's like he's probably very excited about things I think he would I it listener it would be crushing because he would be so excited to start his new day at school, his first day at a new school, and then his like he would get like bullied and attacked and then I think he would become kind of like a snippy mean kid maybe, yes, literally, okay, no way.
em
59:12
Tendo is me, because I remember one time I have this like trauma memory of third grade and like we were, I think we were watching or listening to charlotte's web, and so I was just like making like, like with my fingers like a little spider motion, and one of the other, like nerdy kids, looked at me and was like like shook his head at me for being a weirdo. Yeah, I was Tendo. For sure I'll punch that kid in the face anyway.
rainbow
59:36
Anyway, is there anybody else that we?
em
59:39
We could talk about a lot of people, but I'm running out of steam. All right, yeah, me too.
rainbow
59:42
Me too. We can do this one again with a different group of people.
em
59:46
Yeah, this is a fun one. Yeah, there are definitely other people I want to talk about later on. Yeah, all right, so before we hit the spoiler zone, we go up to the summit. That's what we chose, right A mountain.
rainbow
59:55
Yeah, yeah, that's right. We're climbing the mountain to the very top.
em
59:58
Here's our socials Twitter, instagram, tumblr and Blue Sky. You can catch us at flyhqpod. That's F-L-Y-H-Q-P-O-D. You can also email us at flyhqpod at gmail dot com F-L-Y-H-Q-P-O-D at gmail dot com. And give us a little moment if we take a minute to answer, especially our social medias, because sometimes I forget to look at them.
rainbow
01:00:19
Yeah, same here. I really try to stay away from Twitter as much as possible.
em
01:00:23
Yeah, yeah, we've really like especially social media. We've definitely gotten a little bit away from but, yeah, no, we'd love to hear from you guys, as always. All right, now we're going to the summit, we're going up to the spoiler zone.
rainbow
01:00:41
I love that you really got to add in like a little wind sound effect I did with my mouth. I hope the mic picked it up. It will. Um, yeah, so I mean, do you have anything? Because I have a few notes, but they're quick. I didn't write anything you can go ahead, okay, um.
01:00:58
so first I want to say that at the very top of the episode, with Ukai um saying that they need to visualize their serves like they're in a game, it made me think of Kita from Inarizaki and his approach to practicing that.
01:01:09
Like if you practice it, like if you practice it like you're in a game, every time when you get to the game it'll feel like practice. Yeah, yeah, very true, and maybe there's just like I just think the storytelling in this show is so good and there's so many parallels all the time. Anyway, and then the other thing is I just kind of copy and pasted my note about Hinata thinking to himself why am I here and seeing Ushijima and Kageyama? And again we have this. Like I just think it's so cool that they end up on the same team and they end up being the ones that Hinata has to beat, at like in his like final battle, yeah, and like they're just so connected, like that, and I just think that's so interesting yeah, if Hinata had somehow gotten into Shiratorizawa, I think him and Ushijima would have had a similar kind of relationship yeah, without the like, soulmateism and the yelling.
01:01:58
Yeah, yeah, there'd be a lot of yelling from Hinata's side. I think there might be like a fic out there where Hinata goes to Shiratorizawa and is like a manager or has to be a ball boy. If anyone knows about it, I'd love to read that because I think Tendo and Hinata interacting would be interesting. I live like, honestly, I love a little like Hinata, Hinata at other in, like with other teams. Like I want to see him. I want a fic where he's at Nekoma. I want a fic where he's at Fukurodani. There is one out there that has that. It's a uh Omihina fic. Um, Omihina.
em
01:02:29
Sorry not to be judgmental, but what the fuck is that? It's a cute fic and I like it. Um, I see I I've gotten a lot less possessive about ships. I used to be like no, they can only be very monogamous about my ships, but I still have that feeling of like no, he can only be a carousal no, I totally get that.
rainbow
01:02:45
I just think it's like fun, I like thinking about, like, what the other team dynamics would be, and specifically with Hinata, like I can't really do that with Kageyama because, like Kageyama doesn't like get along with people the way Hinata does, whereas Hinata, like he, you know, whatever team he ends up on, he's eventually going to become center of attention. Yeah, okay, is there?
em
01:03:02
anything else for this episode. Let's get away from this episode and the frustration because Hinata's going to find his place.
rainbow
01:03:09
I'm very excited for the next two episodes.
em
01:03:12
All right, guys. Well, we'll see you next time, and until then, fly high, high, high high.
