hello everyone and welcome to fly a queer Haikyuu podcast. I'm rainbow, they she
em
00:15
and today I'm em
rainbow
just today, though
em
just for today, I'm always changing. Okay and I'm Em. And today, for the first time ever, we are talking about Season 4, episode 5, hunger.
rainbow
00:31
We've definitely never talked about this episode on the podcast before. Well, technically, as far as recorded episodes.
em
00:39
You know I'm starting to think and for people who follow us on Twitter, you'll have seen that I deleted the original project. We recorded this, like what, two weeks ago now and I was doing a big clear out of junk on my computer. And you know, I'm actually starting to think. I wonder if I ever even properly saved the project, because why would I delete it? I don't know, man, I don't know, but rainbow hasn't left me and we're just you. You got a vacation, you're welcome.
rainbow
01:07
Yeah, you get to go a whole week without you got to. Well, you got to go a whole week without hearing us because we had to skip a week so that we could rerecord and we could double up, so that we could get back on a slightly normal schedule. I did this for you.
em
01:25
Yeah, now we're in the middle of a Wednesday, I've got my work computer up and no one better need me because I'm busy.
rainbow
01:27
Yes, I, luckily I decided to call in sick today, so we got an extra day. Rainbow's fine guys, don't worry, she's just lazy. No, I'm just kidding. Actually I do. I think I do want to bring it up. Content warning for pet death. But yeah, yeah. So, um, I found out on Monday that um, my dog back home, um family dog, technically my brother's dog, but you know we all love him, he's part of our family and he's about nine years old and it sounds like he is not gonna be around much longer. Um, probably by the time this comes out, he will be, he will have passed um. So you know, monday was a really hard day. Yesterday was a little hard. I've been checking in on my dad and my brother. There was like a frantic like do I need to come home? Looking at plane tickets, finding potential flights, but I talked to my brother and he said he didn't want me to come home and he wanted me. He said stay there, don't spend the money.
em
02:19
Like you're here in spirit, that'll just make it harder for me, and so it's really and anyone who lives far from home I'm sure you can relate to this. Like we live on the other side of the country from both of our families and it is the hardest part of like, what tragedy do I come home for or not come home for, because I can't afford to drop over a grand on a flight right now and, like you know, not for nothing, but flying kind of feels scary right now anyway, and it's just. It's just a hard decision to have to make and so I think it's good you gave yourself a day. You deserve it. This sucks.
rainbow
02:52
Yeah, I was just like emotionally exhausted, I think I noticed yesterday I was so, so tired and I think I just needed a day to sit and to process. And you know, part of that is, I guess, talking about Haikyuu. Hell, yeah, but before we get deeper into the episode, I do want to say once again it's happy Pride. I mean, listen, we didn't mean for there to be a skipped episode during Pride Month of all months. Please don't accuse me of homophobia, it was an accident. Yeah, I know, like I'm sure you know my first thought not my first thought, but when Em told me I was like, and during Pride Month, there's already been.
em
03:31
it's been four days in as of this recording and there's already been so many things that are happening that I keep thinking like and during Pride Month, yeah, darkness is rising and enemies are everywhere.
rainbow
03:40
We must hold fast, yes, are everywhere. We must hold fast, yes, and so yeah, and just this is a reminder that this pride month, we have to resist the fascism and we need to focus on the liberation of all peoples, not just queer people. And if you're a cis person, not just cis people. Trans people are part of our community and they are under vicious attack from our government and from hate groups. And you know, no one is free until we are all free, and that includes freeing Palestine and Congo and Sudan and all those other places in the world.
04:11
Do not let anyone pink wash, uh, the genocide going on in Palestine. I feel like, at this point, if you don't know by now, then you just don't want to know. But like, just because, like, if people say, like, well, israel's nice to gay people, that doesn't mean that they're first of all, they're not second of all, that doesn't mean that they can commit genocide. Um, because there are queer people who live in palestine and they are not being um saved from the genocide for any reason. Um, so, pinkWashijong, don't engage in it. If you hear other people pinkWashijong, be like, hey, call it out. Um, because at the end of the day, we are all human beings and we are all fighting for our freedom in these shitty white supremacist, capitalist, patriarchal societies, and we have to stand together on that note, uh.
04:55
Moving on to housekeeping, yeah moving on to housekeeping, um, we do still have um our listener response form out. I think I'm gonna have this be our last reminder. I think I've. I'm kind of messed up now on the schedule, but I think after this episode's come comes out, we'll be recording that mid-season break pretty soon. So you know, be on the lookout for that. I think that episode will come out in July for those of you who have already responded. Thank you for those of you who have been putting it off because you're like me and you have ADHD and you procrastinate. It's linked in the show notes. It'll be linked on socials. You know you're running out of time, but don't worry, that is when we do our best work. So, all right, yeah, do you have anything you'd like to add, em?
em
05:40
I think that this second time around is going to be great. I think about the episode of the Office where Pam doesn't put calls through to Michael right away because his first shot is usually pretty goofy and then she'll put it in, and the second time around he's just like hey, how you doing yeah. So you know this is going to be great. Let's go. This is going to be excellent.
rainbow
05:59
Will you count me down for my recap? Three, two, one. The camp portion of this training arc comes to an end as Kageyama wraps up in Tokyo and Tsukihina spend their last day at Shiratorizawa. Kageyama gets some unsolicited advice, while Hinata bravely approaches Ushiwaka for tips. How will our boys have changed once they get back to Karasuno? Find out soon on.
em
06:20
Haikyuu. We jump in, we're at the Tokyo training camp and Kageyama has his hardest frown pout combo on that I've ever seen, and he's flashing back to once again his favorite trauma memory of being rejected by his teammates. And then and we have to take a minute to talk about this because this is the one in like few times we see Oikawa in season four and it's actually a crime because this flashback he's like looking back over his shoulder which I don't maybe that is how it went down when it actually happened but like it's just so cunty, it's giving model. He's like you know, he's thinking back to the advice he was giving him about giving a toss and how, like, if you're not going to give the toss that Hinata wants, you're just regressing back to playing the tyrant king, which I think is exactly what Tobio doesn't want.
07:11
And it's like the source of this frustration right now, because he knows that what Atsumu said to him about being a goody two-shoes is like kind of right and I think that's what's really getting to him. He's like I know, but like if I go back to how I was, that I'm going to lose my teammates. Like what is the balance of like not backing down but also like being a good team player. So Kageyama has on his thinking real hard, frown and pout to the point where the adults notice. And one of them actually recalls seeing a headline about him back in the junior high years, about a promising genius setter in Miyagi Prefecture. But nothing ever came of it. And the other coach contemplates the meaning of genius, he says I personally think they're the furthest away from perfect, but that's what makes them interesting.
rainbow
07:55
Well, I think there's a few things going on here. For one, I think at the very start of this episode, with how angry Kageyama looks. I think that is the angriest we have seen him like, the most frustrated. We've seen him since that time in middle school. Like that. It's very reminiscent that like pinched look on his face, his hunched shoulders. He's so tense, he's so angry and he is like and I think you're right about his thinking I think he's also confused. He's like I don't understand how like I don't understand how. Like I'm trying to do everything right, I'm trying to do everything right and then this amazing other setter is calling me out for being a goody two shoes, but like I don't know where to go from here, I don't know what else to do it's just that like autistic frustration of trying to maneuver through, like socializing, and how there's all these like unwritten rules and no one explains them to you, and everyone else seems to have the handbook, but you.
em
08:43
I feel like that's a lot of what he's feeling like. Can someone just tell me how to act? Yeah, um, and so my takeaway from what the coach says about genius is not being perfect. Is, I feel, like Tobio needs to embrace that he won't be perfect in that sense, like he might butt heads with his teammates, but like that doesn't, like he doesn't have to avoid conflict altogether, kind of thing, but it's a thing to balance.
rainbow
09:04
I think we kind of get what you're saying about, like he doesn't want to revert back to how he used to be. I think there's something that happens later in this episode that very much connects to what Tobio is feeling right now, and I want to talk about that when we get there.
em
09:17
Well, so now back at Shiratorizawa. Hinata is in the zone watching them do more two-on-twos. He actually predicts that Kunimi is going for a fake set, but which Goshiki also reads and is able to pick up. Goshiki is then set to by Tsukki and Goshiki yells at him for his toss being low and sloppy, which Hinata, I think, admittedly enjoys watching. He thinks watching Sekishima get yelled at is new. It must be nice to have the scary one from your team get like put in your place by another kid from a different school.
rainbow
09:48
Yeah, Well, and I really I love Hinata's, all of Hinata's little reactions to this. I love how happy he is when he realizes he got he figured out Kunimi's move right. He's like he's got this smile and that smile continues as Tsuki is being yelled at and I bet, like I'm a younger sibling but I've had friends with younger, I'm the youngest sibling but I've had friends with younger siblings before and I don't know if this connects with you at all, but there is something about somebody else getting yelled at that I think is like can be really satisfying and that feels like it like because Hinata is an older sibling and we know this and I bet he like loves when Natsu is getting yelled at for something like I bet there's some part of like some childish part of him that's like haha, you're getting yelled at, not me.
10:30
Well, and especially, he's been getting scolded a lot recently for acting out and like by Tsukishima yeah, as one of the people, one of the like what five people who's been yelling at him this past week?
em
10:42
so then lots of volleyball talk ensues, but I think the important part here is Hinata is able to keep up with it. The Shiratorizawa ball boy says that they should really be aiming for Hyakuzawa, since he's easier to break than Kunimi. But Hinata points out that if Hyakuzawa gets the ball first, then he'll be the one to hit it over last, and if he gets a high set, he'll probably hit it over. He's really good at hitting high tosses. Kogane adds that Yakuzawa doesn't seem great at defense, but he's got plenty of stamina, and Kandachi points out his long reach. So even when you think you're getting a hit in, he'll touch the ball, and we see him saving it with his long-ass arms On the court. Goshiki thinks that, thanks to Hinata's words of let's take it easy, Yakuzawa really is relaxing Again, again. Hinata is gonna be a great coach one day well and I think it's interesting.
rainbow
11:27
I think something I didn't really think about too much the first time we talked about this episode is the like, camaraderie among these kids at this training camp, and it reminds me of what anabara or no, what Washijo said at the beginning of the training camp is like you were used to seeing each other as opponents, but like you were teammates here, and like we're seeing Hinata, Kogane and Kindaichi talk about what's going on in the game the way we usually see, like Suga and Inoshita on the sidelines, like they really have found like a way to be teammates in this training camp, and even Hinata, who's just been a ball boy, has like because he's Hinata, he is like in that in group as well right.
em
12:02
Tsukki meanwhile does his own volleyball math in his head, trying to figure out if Yakuza will go for the spike. And he does, and Tsukki is able to successfully get a one touch. He sets again to Goshiki and is worried about it drifting. But it's enough for Goshiki who thinks, no, that's fine, and he gets it in with that straight of his.
rainbow
12:21
Yes, and then he does like a little celebration and his teeth are all pointy and I just love it.
em
12:27
I love that visual. I really feel like it adds to like the yeah kind of energy. Yes, we get another good Tsuki Hina interaction where Hinata begrudgingly congratulates Tsuki on that good set. He seems like he's constipated as he says it. And when Tsuki calls him out for what's with that face? Hinata explains that when I saw you do a serious set, I got super hyped but super frustrated at the same time. And Tsukki, very blandly, is like thank you for that detailed and honest response. And as he's walking away he kind of mutters it wasn't even that good.
12:57
Tsukki is never going to let himself feel good about anything he does. I don't think no, he's always got to be his harshest critic. So then Hinata goes to wipe the floor after the match and thinks I also need to be able to do everything. I mean, I feel like setting isn't even something he's thought about doing himself yet, but with this camp he's finally looking at the bigger picture and looking at all the different angles of what positions to play. The Shiratorizawa coach is not feeling well after all those oysters. So today they'll be doing a joint practice match, again going against the third years and alumni of Shiratorizawa. This is their last day of the practice. So let's see how we've improved.
rainbow
13:33
And there's a really cute moment where, like they're all lined up side by side, it's like the training camp kids, and Shiratorizawa and Goushiki is like right next to Shirabu and he kind of asked, he's like like what happened to coach Saito? And then Shirabu, just like very blandly, was like oh, he ate some bad oysters, and that's just like a fun little through line, the oysters, we're not done with them yet either.
em
13:52
No, someone needs to send an inspector to this restaurant, I think so. Kokane is pumped and tries to drag Kunimi into his excitement, to Kunimi's dismay. I don't know why he is so focused on getting Kunimi to be his little buddy. You couldn't pick a worse friend it's just something about.
rainbow
14:08
I think they got like paired up at the beginning and I think this happens sometimes with people who are like really high energy and like it's almost a like borderline toxic positivity, where he's like you've got to be excited too, Kunimi, like you've got to feel the same energy I'm feeling, and Kunimi is like thank you.
em
14:23
Almost like he has to like. Help Kunimi get his energy up Like no, no, he's fine.
rainbow
14:28
Yeah, like Kunimi's at this camp. For a reason he's good, he's got his own shit going.
em
14:33
So Semi asks Goshiki what Hinata is still doing there and Goshiki tells him he wasn't technically invited. Shirabu also listens into this, which will come up later. Shirabu also listens into this, which will come up later. Hinata then runs up to Ushijima after a set to ask him a question. Kindaichi and one of the other ball boys talk and the ball boy says Hinata has some guts and I love Kindaichi. He's always has a good point. He's like you go to the same school as him.
rainbow
14:58
But the kid's like yeah, he's still intimidating to approach well, it's not just that Hinata like runs up to Ushijima afterwards, he also has like locked his eyes onto him during the game. It's very funny. He's like following him around. But yeah, and I think the thing, the context that the ball boy and Kindaichi don't have, is that Hinata has had like several interactions with Ushijima at this point like he's like he's had like face-offs with him and so like he's really not afraid, and that's just like Hinata is, like he is both a scaredy cat and like the boldest person you will ever meet. I feel like when he has a goal in mind.
em
15:32
He doesn't care, like so many people are so, and me included so self-conscious, so embarrassed to be seen giving a fuck and trying, and Hinata is like the antidote to that. He's like I have. I have a goal in mind. I'm not going to not talk to actually my rival because I like whatever pride or whatever it is like. No, I want to get better, so that's that.
rainbow
15:55
Well, and speaking of what you just said, I know Well.
em
15:59
Hinata asks Ishijima when he's receiving the ball what is he thinking about? Now, we don't get the answer to that that. But we then go to Shirabu who suggests to Goshiki shouldn't you be asking him questions too? Who knows, when you know he'll get this chance again? And Goshiki nervously says he doesn't know about asking a rival questions. And I think is exactly what I'm talking about and it's like I don't even know how much of that is real.
16:22
I feel like Goshiki is also kind of intimidated and the rival thing is kind of an excuse. But again, people get so caught up in their own bullshit and their own pride and like being embarrassed or afraid of looking foolish. And Shirabu, who has now overheard that Hinata broke into this camp and is not afraid to ask Ushijima, gives Goshiki such a stank face, like doesn't have to say anything, where semi is like do you really have to lecture him that much with your eyes? And we get the text in the background. That's like rival, are you serious? Like and I think it says something about like you know that that pride isn't gonna get you anywhere, it's a.
rainbow
16:57
In the dub it's translated as toss that unhelpful pride in the trash right now. Seriously, no, and I mean he, I mean he's absolutely right, like Goshki, what are you doing? And then we see, like we cut to Goshki, having like run up and is right next to Hinata and being like, oh, Ushijima-san.
em
17:12
Well, because then Shirabu says to him in the matter of taking initiative, you're one step behind Karasuno's 10. So then yeah, the literal next shot. Goshki is right next to Hinata, being like Ushijima-san.
rainbow
17:22
I think what Shirabu is doing is like, first of all, he is being a good senpai, he's encouraging his kohai and he's doing it in a very Shirabu way, but he's saying, like he's using, you know, that like rivalry. I think Shirabu knows that Goshiki is probably a little bit like I don't know if jealous with Hinata because, like they beat you know, he's another first year on this team, like he's been pretty amazing and all of this, and so he's like using that like rivalry and I love how often that is. What gets these boys motivated is just being like Other boys. Yeah, other boys. That's a little gay, don't you think?
em
18:04
So then we have, like this mini montage of Hinata being the best boy at the camp doing his ball boy things and observing and talking to people.
rainbow
18:12
Yeah, I love this little montage. I think Hinata is freaking awesome. I love watching him learn.
18:21
He's really unafraid to go up to people and ask questions, like we see him asking Simi a question, I assume, about serving. He's asking Kunimi something and it really is kind of reminding me a lot of him in middle school, when he was always asking his friends to play with him, but now he's like asking other volleyball players, instead of being like toss to me, toss to me. He's like, hey, how can I get better at this skill that I don't focus on? Or how can I do better at this um, and I love um, especially this moment with Hinata, like following along with Ushijima as Ushijima is doing a receive and Tendo's like on the sideline and he like we don't hear what he says, but he says something to Hinata and it's so clear that he's like offering him advice. He's not making fun of him, he's not like joking around. It's because Tendo is a great senpai and he's so helpful and I just I really love every little piece of this moment. It's just, it's wonderful and I love Hinata so much.
em
19:10
Well, and I also think another thing that is cutting through what, in other cases, Hinata might be like too embarrassed or nervous or whatever is he's so aware of how little time he has and how special of an opportunity this is and how he has to use it to his fullest. So, of course, like he's not going to not use it to talk to everyone he can and ask all the questions he can think of, as he's finally starting to really figure things out, he's really maturing.
rainbow
19:33
This is like a coming of age moment.
em
19:36
Very much so Cause, yeah, in an earlier episode he was like thinking about kind of how he was just all tossed for me I want a spike. And now he's really like I need to like lock in and learn about receiving and serving and all this stuff.
rainbow
19:47
And he did and he does lock in. His eyes are really focused and intense and I really love it. I love the animation of his eyes this entire episode.
em
19:56
So now back in Tokyo we have the boys are playing a like position shuffle, so they're playing positions they don't normally. And we have Motoya on Kageyama's team, who knows enough to move out of the way for a back row attack, which is pointed out and will come in handy in the next episode. So put a pin in that Hoshiyumi sets for Kageyama and then him and Atsumu go in for high fives, which Kageyama returns without lifting his arms any higher than his shoulders, but they come to meet him at his level, and so you know Kageyama's playing and it like he's like digging a ball, and then it cuts to his face and like the background whites out and he's like I'm on a roll. Everyone else is so good that I feel like I'm rising to their level, which you are who you hang around with. And so if you play with a bunch of bums, you know your skills might not get much better, but you know, I think when you're playing with people who are even better, there is that like almost natural, like you're gonna rise to their level.
rainbow
20:52
Well, and I think that's a little something. I think it reminds me of what Inoshita said when they were talking about Kageyama getting into the training camp like all the way back in episode one. I don know if it was a no-show or if it was one of the other NPCs, but they're like wow, we've really been playing with some intense guys and I think that, just like they've you know, kagehina, I think there is something, and not even just Kagehina, but I think on Karasuno, I think you have like Daichi, Suga and Asahi, these third years that are trying so hard. You have Kagehina. Like they're all rising to meet each other's level, either if it's like skill level or like passion level we see that with Tsukki or like even maturity level. I think like there's something about being on this team with these great senpai and getting these opportunities. That's helping Kagehina grow in their own ways, and right now they had to like separate from Karasuno so that they could grow, um, but it'll be interesting to see what happens when they all come back together.
em
21:44
So then Hoshiumi sets to Sakaza, who then he yells at for doubting his toss, and Sakaza says he was just taking a second to make sure. I didn't even catch that in the moment because I was too focused on how dead inside Sakaza looked, but he did kind of take an extra minute, an extra second before hitting it. The coach then talks about how these boys you know they're like having a conversation on the sidelines about how the boys right now are in kind of a time of discovery. They'll eventually realize their full potential and probably get like pigeonholed into like what their strengths are expected to be, but right now they can just kind of play and he wants them to know that, like, volleyball is fun, which is a theme that we come back to again and again.
rainbow
22:24
I really love this line. He says I want these boys to always enjoy playing volleyball. It is a game, after all, and that's one of my favorite things about haiku is that it understands like, yes, this game is very important to these boys and it is taken very seriously and it should not be like mocked for that. But at the end of the day, it is still a game and if you're not having fun, what is the point of playing it? Right, and I actually think it's interesting that we're getting that line when we're talking about Hoshiyomi.
em
22:53
I can't talk about it right now, but I think I'm gonna bring that up in the spoiler zone and I think we got into a conversation with the first recording about how, again, like winning isn't really just about like trophies and like the satisfaction of winning, it's getting to stay on the court longer and then like again what BoKuroo said to Tsukishima about like you're not having fun because you suck, like getting better, getting stronger is all in the name of like being able to have fun with the sport yes, and I think that's the thing about this training camp is all these guys are so good and they're having so much fun.
rainbow
23:27
And Kageyama we'll get into it a little bit later with Atsumu but like I think for Kageyama, like at the beginning of this episode he wasn't having fun, like he was angry and he was frustrated and like of course, he's like excited to play with these other strong players, but I think there's something to be said for um like it you know how much fun like Kageyama, I think, lost his like fun with volleyball in middle school. I think Hinata and Karasuno have helped him find it again. But I think like he is walking such this like tightrope of like I can't be a dictator king. I need to give people the tosses they want, I need to not be demanding, but like how is that holding him back?
em
24:03
right. The coach also says you know, taking your time may be run-of-the-mill advice, but well, taking your time is important, which Hinata just also taught others and I just love the parallel there. Like Kageyama and Hinata like the minute and hour hand of an o'clock or whatever yachi said, like even when their paths seem to diverge, they're still going in the similar direction and they're still experiencing like parallel fucking things because, they're soulmates, yes, and then the coach goes on to say, really good, setters can even bewitch their spikers, they can make them think they've suddenly got better than before.
24:37
Which is kind of what's happening to Tobio right now, as Atsumu gives him a set and he's like, wow, that felt really good. At the same time, the coaches talk about Atsumu and Tobio like they're equals. They say, like you know, the boys who have been hitting, uh, you know, Kageyama and Mia's sets might be confused when they go back home. And it's different.
rainbow
24:56
And I think they talk about Atsumu specifically and they say that he can make his spikers believe they're better and stronger than they are, and I wanted to talk about this in comparison to what we you know people always say about Oikawa, which is that he brings out the best in his spikers. Do we think that's just two different ways of saying the same thing, or do we think there's a difference there?
em
25:17
I feel like with Oikawa, it was more about his ability to like know his teammates super, super well and cater to them, where, I feel like with Atsumu, the angle is more about, like pushing his spikers to be better and hit higher and stuff like that. So I think it's very, very similar, but like there's slight differences in what we're focusing on.

25:38
Yeah, and I think it's interesting that we get that flashback to Oikawa at the beginning of the episode and there's so much focus on Atsumu, because I feel like Oikawa at the beginning of the episode and there's so much focus on Atsumu, because I feel like Oikawa and Atsumu are both these like setters that, in their ways, are like maybe pushing Kageyama, but also I feel like Kageyama like compares himself to them and like maybe finds himself lacking, and that frustrates him, like because he always I feel like he never felt like he could do what Oikawa does with, like, his spikers.
26:03
He felt like he could never like bring the best out of them, which isn't true because it's what he does with Hinata, um, but I think like Kageyama doesn't know how to apply that to others and I think part of it is because Hinata is such a blank slate, um, you know, like Anabara was kind of saying, where he's like I can kind of like mold him with my sets, whereas, like other players, they have their own way of doing things. It's like the problem he had with Tsukishima, where Tsukishima was like I'm not, you're not the only person thinking right when it comes to the spike, and so Kageyama just doesn't know, and I think it goes back to setters being the control tower, where, like he has to find that balance of like control and like he's gone way too far with the control but I feel like, in a way, he's almost lost control.
em
26:42
It's so interesting that you bring that up, because I think it is true and I think there's also like that element of Hinata and Kageyama just being that weirdly perfect match, of them being able to match each other's speed and energy. But yeah, it's kind of like they have handicapped each other in a way, because you have to be able to play that good with everyone else, and so I feel like that's also why these they, and so I feel like that's also why they got separated in this way, because they had to learn lessons and not just lean on each other. You're not going to be soulmates with everybody.
rainbow
27:10
Exactly so. We go to the commercial break and when we come back we are in the Karasuno gym where Kanoshita what's this? An NPC is doing a jump float serve, which Noya receives pretty easily, but he does. He says like, oh nice serve, which Noya receives pretty easily, but he does. He says like, oh nice, serve Kinoshita. And then we have Yamaguchi noticing that Kinoshita has gotten better and he thinks to himself that he has to keep up, but this apparently trips him up because his next attempt goes out.
27:37
And the thing that I thought of here is kind of almost going back to what we were talking about. Like, playing with other, like stronger players rises you up to their level, and I think Kurosuno is so lucky to have an amazing uh Libro like Noya to practice their serves on, because I'd imagine, like, if you can consistently trip Noya up with your serve, you can confidently go into a match against any other Libro and be like you know what? I think my serve's pretty strong because Noya is such a good player and like and he's a very good teammate as well he's very, um, I think he's good at giving feedback. He's good at giving like praise when it needs to be given. If he's giving like constructive criticism. I think it always comes off as like positive and helpful. Um, and yeah, because he's so amazing, he like rises, he, he makes the others rise to meet his skill level.
28:26
So the boys continue serving. And then we go to the sidelines where Takeda is running up to Ukai, so that they can plan their next practice match. Takeda we don't know what team it is yet, but Takeda says like, oh yeah, they, they agreed. Um, we just need to figure out the, the schedule, um. And so Ukai says that he wants the team to play as many practice matches as they can get against the strongest players they can find. Once they have the full lineup back and Takeda mentions that tomorrow everyone will be back from the training camps.
em
28:56
And I can't remember if I said this in our original recording or previous episode.
rainbow
29:00
But, like everyone in, karasuno is strong, but it does feel like kagehina and tsukki are like the secret ingredient, that kind of gives them that extra push well, I think that's why they're working on serves the whole week is because they're like we don't have our full, like they don't, and it just makes sense. Even, I think, even if they weren't like the secret ingredient which I do agree, I think they are, but like you just don't have your starting lineup, and I think, like serves I think Uki mentioned it like a few episodes ago, where, like serving is the only thing that you do in volleyball, that is all up to you and is on your own. And so I think strengthening service is going to be important, especially because they're going to go up against a lot of powerful servers, because they go into that later.
em
29:44
They talk about that. Yeah, no, it's definitely not a skill they can't afford to work on.
rainbow
29:48
They really only have a few people who have strong serves in particular anyway, so it makes sense, yeah so we go back to tokyo, um, and they're the guys are stretching after their practice match and Atsumu approaches Kageyama to ask how he liked being a spiker. And Kageyama says it was interesting and that Atsumu's sets were easy to work with. And Atsumu kind of looks away and he says anyone who can't work with my sets is a real waste of space. He's such a diva, he really he is like that's the thing about this U19 training camp that we don't talk about enough is that every single person that Kageyama interacts with except for shinzen guy huge fucking diva like Atsumu sakaza Hoshiumi.
30:31
I do love, though, that like, even though Atsumu and Hoshiumi had like words to say, to like words with Kageyama, you know like they were the ones that we were saying like bullying him.
30:39
I do like earlier that they like give him a high five, like it really is, like it's still all in the name of like volleyball, yes, and they're still and kind of in the way we were talking about, like the guys at the Shiratorizawa training camp have like become teammates. The same thing has happened with this U19 group and I do like to see that. Um, but you know, asumi just can't leave well enough alone and has to go poke at Kageyama some more and he asks if Kageyama wants to be a spiker instead of being a setter. Um, and Kageyama's like, no, I'm a setter. And he's like wearing his way of the setter t-shirt, which I appreciate, like literally, like the camera is on his back with those words while he says, but I'm a setter, and Atsumu says that he looks really that Kageyama looks really tense when he sets, and then the shinzen guy is like stretching next to them and he thinks to himself it's probably because you called him a goody two shoes right.
em
31:32
Can I just say Atsumu is really serving like the drag queen that's trying to get into your head right before you go on stage. Because what is that backhanded ass? Compliment, you should be a spiker. You should go fuck yourself. I do feel like there is an element of like okay, this is the other really strong setter. Let me maybe like mind fuck with him a little bit, or maybe he really there also maybe is a part where he's seeing Kageyama hold back and he does think like you know what, I don't think you've got what it takes.
rainbow
31:58
I think there is something I think for Atsumu it's just like well, this is not how setters, this is not how good setters act like, if you want to be a setter, like, you need to be doing things a different way. Um, and I mean, like it or not, whether we like this moment or we think Atsumu is an asshole for it, which, like I do think it's like he is a jerk. I think his personality is like he's just kind of an ass, um, and he, like he doesn't, like he, in his own way, doesn't really know how to talk to people.
em
32:24
Yeah, for sure, and I think we also brought up in the original recording, I think that, like this is Atsumu on his own, because with his, with his well, is that a spoiler? Well, let's just say with his team. With his team, the dynamic is a little different. I don't think he's so much Mr Cool Guy as he gets to be when it's just him.
rainbow
32:46
Yeah, cool guy as he gets to be when it's just him. Yeah, I feel like there's a little bit. I think I think Atsuma and Oikawa are interesting characters to like analyze side by side. I think they've got a lot of similarities there, um, even we'll kind of get into it with, even like the way that other people view them, people on the outside. Um, I think they just I think they are very similar in a lot of ways which you know, I consider Atsumu kind of like the main antagonist of season four. Um, and you know what, I don't think we talked about this enough in the original recording, if at all. But and we'll never know because it's gone now.
em
33:16
Um, sorry, that wasn't supposed to be a dig. Forget about yesterday. What are you gonna do today?
rainbow
33:23
no, but I I want to talk a little bit about Atsukage, because that is definitely a ship, um, and I mean, honestly, I shipped them first, like from this little training camp thing. I was like, oh, what's happening here, what's going on? Atsuma, are you? Are you teasing him because you like him? Um, so what do you think of Atsukage? Do you see it?
em
33:42
I like only when they are fighting over Hinata and then they realize everyone can party together. That's the dynamic, I enjoy.
rainbow
33:52
I agree. I agree I think they work better with all three of them involved, but I think they have a fun dynamic and I think there's fun things to work with there. I like that they're both setters.
em
34:09
Well, and they are so like Kageyama is kind of like the volleyball dork, where Atsumu is kind of like the volleyball cool guy, and I think that's a fun thing to explore in AUs and whatnot.
rainbow
34:13
Yeah, absolutely Okay. So after this whole, like you know, don't you want to be a spiker? You look so tense and then no, but I'm a setter. Then Kageyama asks Atsuma what he meant when he called him a goody two-shoes. And this, my dear friends, is where atsuma calls him a real good boy in the dub the dub, making it horny dub making it.
34:33
I remember my jaw falling off of my face and onto the floor. When I watched the dub for the first time, I was like because he's like, he's like I just think you're an obedient. He says something like he said, calls him obedient. He says a real good boy, right, and it's like please stop. Um, we get, we're already shipping them, you don't have to make it more obvious. Um, and right before he walks away, he does like a little like noise. He does like a little it's so, it's really like. He really is like giving diva, he really is like I know exactly what all setters need and for me I think there is a little bit.
35:08
I do wonder if Atsumu thinks that he is like helping his like, because you know, Atsumu is a second year and Kagam is a first year, and I wonder if there's a little bit of like. You know what I'm technically his senpai and like I need to help him out. But he's just like such an asshole that the way it comes out is like the most backhanded compliment and he's like I'm just being, I'm just being nice, you know, like I'm just being helpful, I'm helping you Exactly, and I think he he does help him. Yeah, so you know they're finished stretching and the training camp is now over. It's the end of the training camp and the coach is giving them a little pep talk before they head off. Um, just about you know, like, go out there and and do do a good job, and everyone's kind of saying their goodbyes we have like Kageyama, like is on his way out of the gym and he stops to tie his shoe and Atsumu comes by and says see you at nationals. And sakazo walks by with you know, no words for anyone, just looking straight ahead. But his boyfriend, komori, is there to say I'm sorry, his cousin, it's just one of the funniest things that's ever happened in fandom history and I'll never let it go. I think it's so funny. But Komori says like later man, and then Hoshiyumi like walks by and gives him like a growl, like gets in his face and like growls at him.
36:22
Hoshiyumi is so like we talked about this. I think that, like he before, we actually saw him like speak to Kageyama. There's this like, really like ominous, like intensity and the way he was framed and it's just like oh, who is he? He's so mysterious. He is just a weird, feral little child. Um, he is just like a weirdo who does, who also doesn't know how to talk to people properly, and he just like he gives them a little. He gives them like a little growl and it's funny because I feel like Kageyama like doesn't quite know how to react at first, but then he just bows. I feel like that's like a Kageyama default.
em
37:00
He's like I don't really know what to do. I will bow in greeting. Well, yeah, and again he is. I think a lot of that like animosity kind of goes over his head.
rainbow
37:08
He's like we had a good time at camp, yes, well we'll talk about how he talks about the camp when he gets back to Karasuno, and so everyone else walks away and then Shinzen Gai walks up to Kageyama and is walking out with him and I noticed in the sub cause I did watch the dub for this episode, but we rewatched last night in preparation for the re-recording.
em
37:29
And.
rainbow
37:29
I noticed he is like he's almost doing like a crying thing of like I'll have a good time at nationals man.
em
37:34
He has really taken, I think, Kageyama under his wing, like he really seems to care about him. The fact that he had that thought when Atsumu was like low-key bullying him and stuff like I don't know, I could definitely see Kageyama being the type that you want to like protect.
rainbow
37:48
I feel like Shinzen guy is like audience insert yeah for this camp where he's just like why is everyone being mean to Kageyama? He's a sweet blueberry, like let me protect him. And then you know, continuing on with that theme, you know like they walk out of the doors and they pause for a and Kageyama asks which way to the station and Shinzen guy just like sighs and is like I'll walk with you.
em
38:08
It's very sweet. You're not going to find it on your own. You're an idiot.
rainbow
38:12
He knows I'm sure Kageyama at some point like just mentioned offhand, like oh yeah. Then we go back to Miyagi and we have Tsukihina leaving their training camp and Hinata is being really cute and he's so excited that he gets to play volleyball tomorrow and he says I'm going to hit so many balls.
em
38:38
And Tsuki is like you could take a break.
rainbow
38:40
Yes, tsuki is tired from the training camp. He doesn't want to play again tomorrow and Hinata is scolding him about how they need to train and Tsukki responds with getting the proper amount of rest is training too.
em
38:51
Which is legit, like I don't even think this is Tsukki trying to wiggle his way out of practice or whatever, and I think Hinata could actually afford to heed this advice, but he won't, no, because it's true.
rainbow
39:01
you know, like you cannot overwork your body, your body will not. You know, if you actually work your body to the breaking point, it will break and then you can't use it anymore, which I think is another great thing about Haikyuu I feel like a lot of shounen anime. I think a lot about Deku in my hero, I think about Naruto and the Ninetale Fox thing, where it's just like you know, you've got to like push your body to its absolute limits and it's like, hey, what if actually you took care of your body, because it is the tool you need to do what you want right um, and then we have uh Kogane being a cute little social butterfly, and he's getting everyone's phone number, all of their email addresses.
39:36
He's like hey, let me add you to my phone.
em
39:38
He's like the nice girl in the sorority.
rainbow
39:41
He really and like he is like he's like if Atsumu was actually a nice person instead of a jerk, because he's just like, he's so sweet and he like goes up to tsukishima and goshiki, um, and he's like, hey, you were the last two I need. And I do think it's cute that tsukishima and goshiki, maybe just to get Kogane to leave them alone, is like uh, it's like, sure, I'll give you number. I think it's interesting. We don't see him asking Kunimi for his number. Do you think he got it? He got it already. He already got it. Yeah, you think Kunimi was like do you think he? Here's my headcanon. Kogane went up to Kindaichi first, said let me get your phone number, and then he's like immediately going to block him. And then we have a very interesting interaction where Kindaichi gets Hinata's attention and then he changes his mind very quickly. He's like, oh, hey, Hinata. And he's like, oh, never mind. And he goes to walk away. But Hinata is like hey, what was that all about? Because Hinata like is not going to let that go. Kindaichi manages to ask how Kageyama is doing, and he's, and Hinata responds with well, he's fine, except during test week, and Hinata. But Hinata doesn't let it go. He's confused and he asks why Kindaichi is asking about that, and Kindaichi is like turned away, isn't even looking at Hinata, and he's like well, I just I've noticed that Kageyama's playing style has changed quite a bit. And before Hinata gets a chance to respond to that, Kunimi walks up to tell Kindaichi he needs to stop worrying about what happened in middle school. What you did back then you thought best. And Hinata realizes that and he thinks back.
41:18
I think, to like early on, when Hinata learned about the king of the court situation with Kageyama and he remembers what Kageyama said about like that was like the worst thing, that was like my worst nightmare. And Hinata asked Kindaichi, he's like, um, he's like, is this about you refusing to hit Kageyama's sets? And Kindaichi, I don't even think he like how does he respond? Does he even say anything or is no, I don't think so. I think he just kind of looks guilty. I think I think Kindaichi is a little shocked that Hinata's picked up on it, which it's like honey, our boy is the most intelligent when it comes to emotions, anyway, not so much when it comes to, like math. But Hinata responds with it's normal for teammates to fight sometimes right, and Kindaichi looks very confused. And Hinata says when you don't back down, you fight. That's normal. And then he says about Kageyama he'll be fine, don't you worry about him, stop. And Kindaichi looks like he's about to cry. I'm about to cry, we're all about to cry.
em
42:13
I think that's a really healthy approach to conflict. Like it is okay to like, especially in the way that he frames like having something that you can't back down on and butting heads, especially for teammates like that is normal and I feel like it's so interesting, like this is such an insight into Kindaichi's character that this is clearly like eating at him. I think he was kind of the leader of like let's like reject Kageyama and now he's living with that guilt. And also I think we discussed this in the original recording of like seeing Kageyama now succeed with a team, he's like shit, was there another way? Like did I just not try hard enough and you could tell Kindaichi and Kunimi have had these conversations and I love like Kunimi's a good friend to Kindaichi because you know they were only they were that much younger and like he did what he could at the time and it is what it is and it was not up to Kindaichi.
rainbow
43:00
Yes, it was on the coaches of the team to notice the conflict, to sit them, to help them work through it. It is not solely up to children to solve these conflicts for themselves. And I mean honestly. I think you know as much as it like pains me to think of Kageyama and the pain he felt when they didn't hit his sets, like Kandeji had to deal with like verbal abuse.
em
43:23
Yes, no, Kageyama was out of line and needed to be dealt with and, yes, the adults should have stepped in, but they didn't, yeah, they didn't.
rainbow
43:29
And so Kindaichi did what he thought was best for him and the rest of his team like he like got that he wasn't. Like this isn't just about me, you can't talk to any of our teammates like this, I'm gonna show you and like, yeah, obviously, and I think he recognizes, I think and that's something that happens sometimes you like you do something to somebody else and you feel very righteous about it, but then later you realize how they might have felt. And I think Kindaichi, in his own way, he has some emotional intelligence and he probably realizes that he hurt Kageyama and he probably doesn't feel good about that. He feels a lot of guilt and I like that both Kunimi and Hinata are kind of like giving him like an out there, like kind of well, you don't have to feel guilty about that.
44:04
Yeah, you know there's a path forward here exactly because I was gonna try to say assuages his guilt, but I don't know if that's how you pronounce that word correctly. Um and so yeah.
em
44:13
So Kunimi comes up and he like pushes Kindaichi to start walking away but and I love because like he rests his hand on his shoulder for like a solid moment and I think, think it's just a reassuring, like dude it's okay, cause he can tell this is really tearing him up. But then he like I think, gonna like snap out of it, pushes his shoulder and he's like who cares about Kageyama anyway? And then turns to Hinata and is like we're going to beat you next time. We're in an official match. I fucking I love Kunimi honestly.
rainbow
44:40
I, I think Kunimi is great, I love that moment. And like Hinata responds with the usual like hell, no, you won't. Like we're going to win next time. And then Kindaichi, in kind of like a sweet way, he says like we'll see you around, Hinata.
em
44:52
Yeah.
rainbow
44:53
And.
em
44:54
I think it's very sweet, all right.
rainbow
44:55
And now we move on to an izakaya where Washijo, anabara and one of those other random coaches who doesn't get a name are talking about the training camp. And Anabara thanks Washijo for putting the camp together and Washijo shows appreciation for the two on two drills. And then the random coach asks if Karasuno's number 10 ever got to play and he's shocked to learn that he was a ball boy the whole time. And Anabara talks about how focused he was and how his enthusiasm spread to the other kids. And then Washijo has been listening to this and like drinking his drink, he like takes a sip, puts his drink down and says a need, an overpowering hunger for height, and he talks about how, like shorties, like us, like you know, we don't have the height to get there, but deep down that hunger is always there for both of us. What we've been given instead of that physical stature is that driving hunger. And while he says that last line, we transition to Hinata who's riding up the mountain on his bike yelling I'm starving.
45:55
Poetry, absolute poetry, absolutely beautiful. I love Washijo putting him and Hinata in the same category and Hinata in the same category and like we've kind of seen this before at the end of the Shira Toruzawa match, when you know, the team was like bowing to the, the other coaches, the way they do as they were watching, walking away, Washijo says to coach Saito like hey, that cross no number 10. You'd say he's about as tall as me, right? So Saito's like, yeah, sure. And Washijo says, you know, he still has some growing to do. And then he says the thing about like the higher his ambition, the higher, the harder his obstacles will be and if and we've talked about this for the last several episodes that like Washijo is like putting obstacles in Hinata's path and Hinata is just fucking smashing through them surprise Washijo is team Hinata actually yeah, and Washijo.
46:41
I think this is the moment where, like, I don't know if this is the full turn. I think he's still got a little bit to go. I think there's a little bit more later in the season that we'll need to talk about, um, but I think this is Washijo. I think that it's such a sign of the growth that Washijo has had that he's putting himself and Hinata in the same category. And I think, for Washijo because he says something about, like you know, we have to figure out a way to like find to that height.
47:07
And I think, for Washijo, instead of like finding a way to fly higher himself, he said, well, I'm gonna fly, I'm gonna find other people who can jump really high and be really strong and I'm gonna almost like live vicariously through them. Yeah, and that's what he did. And Hinata isn't going that road. Hinata says, no, I am hungry, I am starving and I am going to find a way to be that, to fly high. And I like that Washijo, I think, recognizes that like maybe there was another path for me that I could have taken.
47:37
And, to be fair, I think, like, I think if, if Washijo had a coach, like an Ukai or a Takeda. Maybe he could have it's again. I think coaches, the adults in your life can often influence the path you end up taking, and sometimes you have people who are willing to give you opportunities, willing to help you grow. You have other people who are going to be an asshole and say no, you're too short, you just have to be a ball boy. Very, very true, yeah. And then uh, and so we, we just cut to Hinata for that minute to hear him say I'm starving. And then we go back to the Izakaya and the random coach had ordered some oysters.
em
48:08
I don't know. I don't know what the oyster thing is. Is there like a inside joke that we're missing here? I don't know.
rainbow
48:14
I don't know, I love it, I think it's very funny. And then, and Annabara, kind of like side eyes, the random coach, like really you're Saito got sick, um, and Washijo orders another drink I think it's Saito with hot water, um, which of course that's what he orders, um. And then we go on to the next day and this is such a beautiful, like quiet moment. We get where it's, it's the morning, the sun rises on Karasuno high school, with Hinata locking up his bike and he's heading off to morning practice and he stops in his tracks and he turns to the side and he faces Kageyama because he, he just knew, he felt his presence, his spidey senses were tingling absolutely, and Kageyama has also stopped to look at Hinata.
em
48:57
This romantic ass reunion.
rainbow
48:59
This is so like what are you talking about? What are you talking about? And then there's like a moment of prolonged eye contact and then an unspoken challenge and it's like a cool moment where, like, the screen splits and it's like both of them and the camera like zooms up onto both of their eyes and they like lock in and then they start racing off to the club room, literally racing each other to see who could get there first, because they are dramatic and gay. And Hinata does get there first by jumping, like he's going for home base and, uh, it's. It's a very cute scene. And then, you know, Hinata sits up and Kageyama asks Hinata what he did for the last five days, and I think it's very reminiscent of episode one when he says what have you been doing these last three years? But this time the answer is very different. Instead of Hinata just being like quiet and his teammate having to defend him because you don't know what he's gone through, Hinata is very happy. He's like I was the best ball boy.
em
49:56
And Kageyama smiles. Yeah, I think this is good news to him.
rainbow
50:00
I think he's like this is perfect, this is what you should have been doing.
em
50:13
And, like we talked about this in the original recording, um, like I wish we had seen Kageyama's reaction to the fact that Hinata broke into this camp and I'm wondering if, like he made that connection of saying ball boy or like like I, I don't know when he found out that Hinata broke into the other camp. But I do wish we had gotten that.
rainbow
50:23
I don't think we should assume that Kageyama deduced that Hinata broke in.
em
50:27
But like, why would he be a ball boy at Karasuno, Like why wouldn't he just do serving practice with everyone else?
rainbow
50:34
Well, Kageyama didn't know that they were doing serving practice the whole time Furudate I need answers. I think, yeah, I don't think Kageyama is going to think that deeply about it.
em
50:45
I think Kageyama just heard oh, my boyfriend was working on skills other than spiking, yeah that's great and we can assume, because now they go to passing the ball back and forth out in the field because neither of them have a key to the club room and so I'm going to assume that we didn't see the part where he's like. Well, I also. I was in Shiratorizawa.
rainbow
51:07
Yeah, he's like, well, tsukishima got to go to that cool camp, but I wanted to go. So because then we do, they're, they're passing back and forth and Hinata's talking about, um, the all the players that he got to be. He's like, well, goshiki was clearly the best, but then and it's so funny because he's clearly trying to say like, well, this person was definitely the best he's like, oh, but then also Kunimi and also, uh, hyakuzawa, and he's just like Hinata's just a volleyball fanboy. He really is, um, I love it so much. And I think he said in this moment it's just so cute, I love them like debriefing about their camps together and Kageyama, or I think Hinata says something like, oh, there must have been really cool guys at your camp too. And Kageyama says yes, and he says there was a little giant there and Hinata is like shook and like like they're passing the ball and Hinata like grabs it and he's like, oh, my god. And Kageyama says, out of all the guys there, Hoshiumi was one of the best. And Hinata is so excited.
51:58
But then, because it's Kageyama, he has to say he was about 100 times better than you and I'm like, okay, Kageyama, we know that you're saying that one, because you love to get Hinata riled up. You want to bicker with him. Also, I think there's a little bit of him being like. Does this reveal too much about the fact that I was thinking about you the whole time?
em
52:17
I know it does feel like such a like because we went from him like this is a very like loving thing. To tell him is like hey, there was another shorty and he was one of the best, like kind of a hopeful thing. But then and it's not like Kageyama's wrong, but, as Hinata says he's like did you have to bring that up? Couldn't you just left it at the nice thing?
rainbow
52:34
yeah, because then Hinata is like yelling at him and as Hinata's like berating Kageyama, Tanaka walks up holding the key. It's very again reminiscent of like early season one, when Tanaka comes to like open the gym for them so that they can practice for the um three on three match, and he like walks up and he's just like he's such a like a Kagehina shipper because he like comments about how they couldn't wait to be at each other's throats. He's like you couldn't have waited to start fighting, like you're fighting immediately. What is this? He's like how did what are you even fighting about? Yeah, it, they're always going to find something to fight about.
em
53:06
It's Kagehina and I again, like the fact that Hinata his emotions about fighting and how it's so normal and it's all he does with Kageyama. Yes, anyway, yes.
rainbow
53:16
He. They match each other's freak perfectly.
em
53:18
So then we get back into the romance shoujo.
rainbow
53:21
Yes, because now the club room, they can open it. So they're going upstairs to the club room. Tanaka's gone up ahead. Hinata is walking up the stairs. Kagema stops him. He says hey, if you want to, you can fly even higher. And he like looks back and blinks, yeah.
em
53:38
And then Hinata like looks back and like blinks in this, like moment of awe it is honestly romantic, I said to Rainbow yesterday because we watched five and six and the beginning of six. We take off from this moment Spoilers, but I'm like I think this is the first moment Hinata thinks about kissing Kageyama. I would not be surprised.
rainbow
53:57
I think so. I think he heard, and I'm sure he's putting it in his head. He's like oh, this other tiny giant was there and he was one of the best. And now Kageyama is saying like you can fly even higher too.
em
54:09
That's volleyball, for I love you, bae.
rainbow
54:11
It really is. It really is, and I personally think that the English VA for Kageyama does a good job with this line. I think it's not too gruff, I think it's like it's not too harsh, I think it like has like the tone that it needs to have. I was very proud in that moment. I was like, after four seasons, you're finally starting to understand Kageyama as a character, and I appreciate that. And then, after this earth shattering moment in which lives were changed across the globe, the moment that sparked a thousand fics, we go to Date Tech High School, where the coach comes up to tell the team that they just agreed to a last minute practice match with Karasuno, and we get a moment of Aoni and Futakuchi and they look ready to kill. I'm scared, um, and yeah. So that is where this episode leaves us, with a beautiful gay moment and then a nice little lead-in to what happens in the next episode Typical Haikyuu episode.
em
55:07
Okay, and for manga versus anime, I honestly did not have much for this episode. It covers chapters 218 to 220, and the only note I have is that when Hinata is watching and staring down Ushijima, we have Tendo thinking ooh, he's staring at you. I just love Tendo has clocked the Ushihina dynamic since day one. Yes, and now on to our character spotlight.
rainbow
55:32
So for our character spotlight, I decided to do Chigaya Ikichi, broccoli number two, broccoli number two. Yeah, if you're wondering who the fuck is that guy, it's Shinzen guy.
em
55:41
You and Kageyama are wondering.
rainbow
55:44
Yes, um, so there's not like a crazy amount for him. As far as personality, um, basically, the only line that I pulled from the wiki was that he appears to be a friendly person. Um, because the rest of his like personality is just kind of like a recap of like the way he acted at the all japan training camp, which we've already discussed, so I'm not gonna go into it, but we have his name meaning. His family name name is Chigaya, which means thousand deer valley Wow, and he is possibly named after the Chigaya shrine in Saitayama Prefecture. His given name is Ikichi, which means either Britain, slash hero.
em
56:23
I wonder if it's the kanji, because, like Britain, is like Igarasu, so maybe yeah.
rainbow
56:28
I don't know't know, that could be, that could be right. Yeah, so the first kanji means britain slash hero and then the second kanji of his name means luck slash good fortune oh and then we have his character sheet.
56:41
Um, he goes to shins in high school. He's in class one five, his position is middle blocker, which you would not have known from the training camp because he was literally only there to comment. I love that they like had to give somebody more talkative and like with a little bit more like depth, because Kageyama was not going to give us that.
em
56:59
That's so true. He really did feel like a device here.
rainbow
57:02
Yes, yeah, absolutely. His height is 6'4 six four, six feet four inches, which translates to or, excuse me, which converts to 193.04 centimeters, so he's a tall boy. Um, his birthday is october 19th, meaning he is a libra a libra I would.
57:21
I would assume that's still lira territory um, his favorite food is grilled tarako rice balls and I looked it up and tarako is Alaskan pollack roe. Um, so he loves those rice balls. And then his current worry is the team manager loves red bean rice and makes it for the team a lot, but he doesn't really like this stuff. Oh, poor buddy, you know you could just All right. And then, moving on to his five point ability parameters, his jumping is a two, which I thought was interesting, I guess because he's so tall and, being a middle blocker, it's like he really doesn't have to jump that much, I guess. But then his speed, his and his power and his intelligence, those are all threes and his technique and stamina are fours.
em
58:04
Not the most impressive rap sheet for someone at the Tokyo training camp which again it's like were you just here to be Kageyama's talking piece?
rainbow
58:11
He really was just they like needed somebody. I feel like it was just like okay, we don't want to pull in any of like the characters from, like Fukurodani or Nekoma, but we need somebody who would reasonably be at this training camp. And again, I think the idea with this training camp is I think they want to look at players. It's like kind of almost like it's a conditioning kind of thing, where it's like hey, do we want to maybe pull you into the U19 camp? Um, so I don't know, based on his performance, if they're still looking at him or what, but thank you for being a device, um, and giving us someone to do for a character spotlight.
58:48
Yeah, honestly, yeah, I don't know who else I would have done. I mean, I guess I could have done like Atsumu Hiroshi Yumi, but no, they have better episodes. They do. We're going to talk about them later. Fret, not listeners, if you're like, why haven't you? Oh, because we have so much more to go.
em
59:07
We have more to go. We have. So, yeah, don't worry, the these people come back. All right. Now it's time for the world's favorite game of two in haikyuu. This week's scenario was brought to you by. I think it was my idea. Yeah, and it's. How does each pairing spend a saturday morning? And we're talking like aged up they're adults living like their own independent lives. Yes, and in pairing. So we're going to talk about kagehina ush ten asaNoya daiSuga, tsukiyama Kuroo Kenma and boku waka, and I would like to add iwa oi, because we did not do them and we should you're, absolutely you know what that is.
rainbow
59:35
Why we lost this episode is because the universe said you didn't talk about iwa oi. Oikawa's ghost said you didn't talk about me.
em
59:41
Yeah, yeah, cleansing.
rainbow
59:46
Yeah, love that Sailor Moon reference. All right, starting off strong Kagehina. What are they doing a Saturday morning?
em
59:53
They're the most annoying couple, you know, because they get up really early and they go for a jog together and then they have like a really healthy breakfast and Hinata's doing his yoga and you know they're doing all the like health fitness couple shit.
rainbow
01:00:08
Yes, the kind of stuff you could not catch us doing and it depends on where we're at in the season.
em
01:00:12
So if we're, you know, if we're about to be in the season, they're training really hard. If they can relax a little bit, you know, maybe Hinata gets to drag Kageyama out to go to the farmer's market or go explore or have some morning sex yeah, they're definitely playing volleyball at some point Every day, every day, in the volleyball net that they have in the backyard.
rainbow
01:00:30
Yes, yes, I think we talked about my headcanons before, about the way that their house is set up and it's a small house with a very big yard so they can play volleyball. Yeah, yes, absolutely, ushi 10.
em
01:00:40
Ushi 10. I'm trying to remember what we said because we had a great conversation in the original recording.
rainbow
01:00:45
I think this is gonna be another great conversation. I do remember um because I think I led the Ushiten conversation, because I think Tendo is sleeping in very late. I think, Tendo spends a lot of like he. Their sleeping schedules are very different. I think they probably actually spend like maybe three or four hours sleeping in the same bed. Um, yeah, Ushijima is getting up early. He's doing a lot of the similar Kagehina stuff he's going for a run with a protein smoothie.
01:01:07
He's coming back he's making like a delicious breakfast, and you know. And then Tendo is like waking up, naturally, like getting you know, getting coffee. He's not eating enough for breakfast, so ishi jima's like you should eat more. Um, but, and you know, and I think, maybe after, maybe after his like shower, maybe after his run because Tendo's a little freak he's like come in here and fuck me a little with your sweaty body and then we'll go take a shower together, come fuck me a little bit.
em
01:01:30
Yeah, oh, I also remember saying I really had Ken and Ushijima as like a bit of a gardener, so I think he tended with garden.
rainbow
01:01:37
Yes, yeah, well, you know, I'm sure he's like, because I'm sure Tendo loves to cook I see that for him and so he's like he grows herbs for him that he can include in his little oh my god.
em
01:01:47
It takes him 20 years to read through those really long recipes. You know when they tell you their fucking life story before getting to the recipe, but he has to read everything he never presses the jump to recipe button.
rainbow
01:01:58
He reads every line. He reads the ads in the corner, all the pop-ups.
em
01:02:02
He watches the videos Tendo's like you have to plan these dinners like a week in advance, because last time we waited until 9 pm for you to read the whole fucking thing. Yes, okay, asaNoya, I think, is a little bit more of a chaotic thing. Uh, we can only know that. No, I would rip open the curtains. Uh, waking Asahi up, who definitely is another like sleeping in type of person, yeah, he's giving like the only time.
rainbow
01:02:24
Asahi is ever. Grumpy and grouchy is first thing in the morning.
em
01:02:28
I think they're definitely another morning sex couple. And then Noya is dragging him out to like try a new restaurant or like check out something new. They're always having a little adventure.
rainbow
01:02:38
Noya loves a chaotic Saturday brunch where he's meeting up with Tanaka and they're they're having.
em
01:02:45
They're absolutely causing chaos in the restaurant yes, but when they do get to hang out, Asahi is on that crossword puzzle with a cup of tea yes, yeah, Asahi likes.
rainbow
01:02:54
I think he like, I think they've negotiated it where he's like Noya NishiNoya, you, I need you to give me 20 minutes of silence in the morning and maybe Noya like goes out and like does something like energy, like he goes and gets some of his energy out oh my god, yeah, I see that absolutely daiSuga are so domestic, I think you know they.
em
01:03:14
They work their nine to fives and then saturday mornings I think they both sleep in a little bit. I I really see Suga eating like a Sugary cereal and watching sailor moon in the morning, like I like to do, agreed agreed.
rainbow
01:03:25
I like to think Suga's waking Daichi up with a blowjob every once in a while. Yeah, um for sure, and Daichi's like the first time he's like, oh my gosh, but then he, you know, he likes it. Whoa, yeah, yeah, no, I agree, I think they're totally domestic. I think you know. I think Suga is the type of person who, like you, can't talk to him until he's had his first cup of coffee. I think.
em
01:03:46
Think they're like us, like they have a routine. They go to the grocery store and, you know, do their little errands. Do they have any pets?
rainbow
01:03:53
Oh, I think they'd have a dog. I think I think they'd have a dog too. That should be another who in Haikyuu that we do later on is like what kind of pets would each person have, but also what kind of pets would each couple have?
em
01:04:04
We're definitely going to do more like pairing versions of these in the future, because this is fun, this is so fun.
rainbow
01:04:09
Yeah, and listeners, if you have suggestions specifically for pairings, which I think we've gotten, like one before that we haven't gotten into because it's very, I think, like kind of time skippy, but we definitely want to do it at some point, but, yeah, if you have other suggestions for Hu and Haikyuu specifically for the pairings, this is really fun.
em
01:04:24
Yeah, okay, um, moving on to tsukiyama, yes, tsukiyama, who they've been together for years and years and years very much has like a routine. Um, I think they also are more apt to sleep in both of them. Um, I think tsukki or yamaguchi might have like a little garden or something that he maintains. Who, do you think, cooks breakfast?
rainbow
01:04:48
Do you think they take turns?
em
01:04:49
I think they might take turns. I think they each have dishes that like kind of like us, we have our dishes that we like to do.
rainbow
01:04:54
Yeah, yeah, no, I totally agree. I think that they're they're chilling. I think, um, you know, maybe they have like a morning show that they watch.
em
01:05:02
Maybe. Yeah, they go on like a nice morning walk.
rainbow
01:05:05
Yeah, they really enjoy and indulge in their Saturday. They like refuse to answer Kagehina's calls because I'm sure Hinata's like always like do you guys want to come do this with us in the morning? And Tsukishima's like I don't want to see you on the weekends. Thank you.
em
01:05:18
Tsukishima's. Like Yamaguchi, you can't answer the phone actually on Saturday mornings.
rainbow
01:05:23
It's like they keep it on, do not disturb, until noon.
em
01:05:25
Maybe they also like they are definitely the type of couple that has like check-ins where, like they go over like the bills of the month and then their goals of the month, and I just think that they're like the ultimate. They've been at this for years, since middle school, I think. They're professionals. Yes, Kuroo Ken Kenma has not slept.
rainbow
01:05:43
Yeah, Kenma is still kin, kinmo, kinmo is venmo. I don't know what was I trying to say there.
em
01:05:49
Uh, I was trying to say Kuroo and kinma at the same time Kuroo is waking up and like I feel like Kuroo wake, kind of like how um kiki wakes us up at 3 am every fucking night for food. Kuro wakes up around 5 am and sees Kenma was still playing and forces him to get into bed.
rainbow
01:06:05
Yeah, and they sleep in yes, he forced, yeah, he gets. He drags him away from the video game, maybe makes him like brush his teeth, wash his face. Yeah, we're gonna go lay in bed and like maybe that he how he entices him like, listen, let's sleep in for a little bit and then, you know, I'll wake you up by giving you a little hand job. It'll be nice.
em
01:06:22
I feel like Kenma would be the type to be like get off of me in the morning.
rainbow
01:06:26
Yeah, I feel like Kenma is like, don't talk to me in the morning, don't look at me, but I think I think he's secretly a little snuggly. Oh, yeah, I think he gets a little snuggly and it's just for Kuro. I feel Kuro-Ken is very much a relationship for me where, like, Kenma is like he's very special with Kuro specifically. Yeah, and I see that. But then, yeah, I think, when they're ready to get up, I think Kuro's doing everything Kuro is. It's that TikTok of like hi, my name's Samuel and I pack the bags and I'm Darsheen, if you see, if you know, you know it's so funny. They've like a series of this and it's all perfect.
01:07:00
I love looking at the comments because, like, people will be like oh, darsheen really needs a break after all of that. Oh, and they have a cat. Obviously they have a. They have several cats. I would think I they have, they have outside cats. Yeah, so Kuro's morning is he like makes, he like gets up, um, after they've had little lion, he like feeds all of the cats. He makes breakfast. Kinma is just like and you know we can't get into time, skip stuff too much but I think Kinma is like doing his thing. He's very responsible in his own way, but I think Kuro is like and Kuro's definitely wearing like a pink apron. He is like living his like favorite, like housewife fantasy.
em
01:07:36
Okay, BokuAka, all I remember from the original recording is I said that they were definitely a morning sex couple yes, fully agree.
rainbow
01:07:43
I oh. We talked a lot about how I think Bokuto would like try to be really romantic and make breakfast in bed for Akaashi, but Akaashi would be like we are not allowed to eat in the bed oh, yeah, um and he would also like he be early relationship.
01:07:55
Bokuto is like not great at cooking and is burning a lot of like the rice is mushy, the fish is burnt, like it is. It's not going great, um, but Akaashi still like is he? He takes? He's like loves it. It's like a mom whose like kids make her breakfast on Mother's Day and it's not great, but she's like oh, this is, I love you right?
em
01:08:15
um, yeah, I think they're both like kind of early risers. Maybe sometimes Akaashi does join him for a run once in a while, but if not, then he's like also like looking at the paper and working on stuff.
rainbow
01:08:25
Yeah, I think he's like, he likes to read a book. Maybe you know that kind of thing. I totally agree. I think they're another like I think they maybe they meet up for other couples.
em
01:08:34
I was going to say they would also be a type to like meet up for brunch with the other couples.
rainbow
01:08:37
Yeah, I could see like Tsukiyama and Boko Aka having like a brunch moment together.
em
01:08:42
Okay, Iwaoi.
rainbow
01:08:44
Oh god, iwoi, we didn't even talk about them last time, I know this is new.
em
01:08:48
I can really see Oikawa being like a grump in the morning.
rainbow
01:08:58
Like Iwa having to drag him out of bed, kind of thing. Yeah, I see, I kind of think. I like to think that they're both like not exactly morning people, yeah, but I think like it's a little different. Like Owaisumi is like, okay, I'll get up when I have to get up. I think Oikawa fights it, he wants to, he is me, he wants to yeah, he's you drag like literally dragging himself off the bed.
01:09:11
Yes, like it looks like a force is like has to pull him out of bed because he doesn't want to go, but I could see them, yeah, like laying in bed and just like talking for like an hour.
em
01:09:22
Are they a morning sex couple?
rainbow
01:09:23
yes, they absolutely are do we think that Oikawa is the kind of person who doesn't want anyone else to see him until he's had a chance to do his hair and like look presentable. Oh yeah, yeah, Iwaizumi is the only one who gets to see him in that state, and Iwaizumi does make fun of him for like his hair being messy and having eye boogers, and Oikawa pretends like he's annoyed but he loves that Iwaizumi is. He feels safe enough around Iwaizumi to let him see him like that.
em
01:09:46
And Iwaizumi always makes breakfast, but Oikawa always has something to bitch about.
rainbow
01:09:50
Yes, yeah, maybe, yeah, maybe, like Iwaizumi like tells Oikawa to make the coffee, but Oikawa doesn't want to, and so Iwaizumi ends up doing it anyway, right, yeah.
em
01:10:02
I totally agree. Cool, all right, that is who in Haikyuu. Before we head up to the spoiler zone up in the mountains, I want to give you our socials so you can see next time when I announce that we're skipping a week. We're on Twitter, instagram, tumblr and Blue Sky at Fly HQ Pod. That's F-L-Y-H-Q-P-O-D. You can also email us and yell at me for skipping a week at Fly HQ Pod at gmailcom. That's F-L-Y-H-Q-P-O-D at gmailcom. Be nice to Em. We've never. Actually, I feel like I want to jinx it. I was going to say we've never gotten a mean email. I'd be shook if it ever came through.
rainbow
01:10:38
I think our listeners are really nice. We have the best audience ever.
01:10:42
I love y'all yeah, every single one of you who is listening to this. You're amazing. We love you. You always have nothing but nice things to say to us and we really appreciate that. I also wanted to, you know. Going back to what we talked about in at the very top of the episode, with solidarity and supporting other people. Our show notes always have links that so that you can support Palestine, sudan and Congo, who are all experiencing genocide and um just and discrimination and harassment, and you can help them using the links in our show notes.
01:11:14
Nice all right, so now we have to go up to the spoiler zone zone zone you all can't see it, but our cat is sleeping on the cat tree that's right next to em's desk where she's already up there in the spoiler zone mountain and yeah, and em is reaching towards her. It's really beautiful. She's staring at me like you're an idiot. She's like why aren't you petting me right now? You're looking at, but your hands aren't on me and I don't understand this.
em
01:11:41
So for the first spoiler zone item, I pointed out that line of Hinata saying I need to be able to do everything and the fact that you know when he does beach volleyball, beach volleyball is all two on two, and so I just think that this is kind of a. This whole like camp is a nice foreshadowing of the things that Hinata has to come.
rainbow
01:11:58
Well, I think, because in that moment I think I remember the manga panel from when, like because in the time skip in the Brazil arc it kind of shows a flashback of Hinata making this decision to go to Brazil, and I think it shows that manga panel of him like wiping up sweat on the ground in Shiratorizawa and thinking to himself I need to be able to do everything. That's where the seed is planted, the seed which I think it's. It's another like great, like narrative thing that like he figures us out at Shiratoro Zawa and then it's Washijo who helps him get to Brazil and train yep, everyone's team Hinata, whether they want to act like it or not exactly, and and you know why?
01:12:36
it's because Hinata can and will fly higher. I'm so excited to talk about the boom jump. I'm excited to talk about it next episode. I'm excited to talk about it when they get to nationals, when Hinata jumps and forgets to spike. It's one of the best moments. And then we have and then when we get to the movie and we talk about the four against Nekoma and the movie and we talk about the the four against Nekoma and then. So I thought about this while we were talking about in the episode and you don't really remember a lot about the game against toshiyomi and his team, right?
01:13:06
no so when we talked about volleyball being fun, I think it's so interesting that we get this moment like and again, this is just Furudate the outlining you did for this let me see what. How were you planning this in advance? Because it's such a well-told story, because we get this moment early on in the episode where the coaches at All Japan are talking about Hoshiyomi and how good he is, and then they go on to talk about volleyball being fun and that is like a big part of Hoshiyomi's arc with his own volleyball boyfriend, Hirugami. Because Hirugami with his his own volleyball boyfriend, Hirugami, because Hirugami is like from like a volleyball, like lineage, like a dynasty. All his siblings play, he plays, he's a really good middle blocker, but he doesn't enjoy it anymore. And Hoshiumi like makes him realize like, oh, you can like play volleyball and just have fun. You don't have to go and be a professional, like it's okay to just have fun with the sport. What's even the point of playing if you're not having fun?
01:13:58
And I thought it was. It just really hit me as we were talking about. I'm like, holy shit, we're getting this moment. And then we also get a flashback to Oikawa in this episode and that's his thing with Hinata. When they meet up in Brazil, Hinata reminds Oikawa, who's like kind of going through his own like low period, that like hey, volleyball is fun, and I just I just think the storytelling is impressive and incredible and I think if I ever got to Furudate to talk to Furudate, that would be like the thing I would focus on, is like I want to talk about like your planning for this story, your outlining, because I think this came out like weekly in Shonen Jump and I think that's something that we've seen with like other shonen animes and really other show like other, like other mangas, where it's like they come out, they're serialized and because there's not like really a plan, like things get retconned kind of storylines go nowhere.
01:14:46
I think Naruto is famous for this because it was coming out so quickly and there was like no plan. I think Furudate really had like a story planned from beginning to end and I think just a really excellent job. There's very few things where they drop the ball and I think the one thing is like Sakusa's like character design when we see like a flash of his back oh yeah which is like nothing.
01:15:08
It doesn't matter who cares. That's like nothing compared, especially when you look at all the amazing things they were able to do.
